"Why?" Shiro questioned curiously. "I mean, aside from the obvious. What happened to you guys out there? All you ever said in your letters were that everyone was doing well enough, that Earendil had been injured but don't make a big deal of his scars, and then that you were on your way home."

"Yeah, we've been awfully curious," Kaito added.

Shiro glanced back towards the others for a moment. "You didn't even say anything about Lancaeriel's husband being there."

Lin shook her head, as if that wasn't how she had hoped things would go.

"I didn't want to worry anyone, at the time I wrote the first letter, we didn't know how much Earendil was going to heal. I guess I had hoped that his hearing and sight would improve, the damage was the result of the torture he received. I didn't say anything in the second letter, because I hadn't told Earendil I had mentioned his ordeal in the first letter."

She sighed like a mother who had a misbehaving child.

"Besides, I thought it would be good for him to tell you all himself. He can't hide it, the eye sight isn't bad, it's within our range so it doesn't handicap him completely but his hearing makes conversations in crowds and soft murmurings difficult. Having Cael as a surprise was just that, a surprise really for everyone since we figured it would go over well."

She paused for a second and then added, since Shiro asked.

"As for why, Earendil had been caught on night shift, he went with them willingly to keep the rest of us hidden, and while I completely understand that, I would rather not have to go through that again."

"Ah." Shiro nodded. "Yes, I can understand that. Thankfully, we don't really need to keep watch here. It's very safe. Even the animals don't come around here."

Lin and the others wouldn't know that, of course, since they'd left after only two days here.

Just then Earendil rejoined them, and he took a place silently at Lin's side. He looked down at her and smiled. "Tent's up," he murmured quietly. "I put our bags inside."

"Good," Lin motioned to Kaito, "Now you can tell Kaito that you're not offended and why you went to pitch the tent."

Even though she had already told Kaito why, to her, the best way to get Earendil to be honest was to show him avoiding it was leading to misunderstanding.

Earendil blinked. "Offended?" he repeated. He looked at Kaito. "I'm sorry if I gave that impression."

"Well, you did leave pretty suddenly," Kaito pointed out.

Earendil sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Truth is," he said quietly, "I couldn't hear what you were saying. Even now ..."

He glanced towards where the others were still chatting and setting up tents. "All the noise is blending together and it's hard to understand you," he murmured. "My hearing was ... pretty badly damaged while we were there. It's hard to be around people. At least in groups. Even one-on-one is hard."

"You know.. I have been meaning to ask since you know your Uncle Gion relatively well," Lin then remembered, "But just in case we need to, do you know sign language?"

Most of the Winters did because of Skye and Iris, though it wasn't something Lin had taught to Miyuki, and she was pretty sure they used a bit with Andarien in an attempt to reenforce the language they were teaching.

Which didn't work in the least.

Earendil nodded at Lin. "Yes, I'm fluent," he affirmed. "Uncle Gion and Skye both needed it, not to mention Sir Ryder on the ranch."

He didn't like the idea of having to revert to sign language, though he was forced to admit that it would be helpful.

"How many of the others know it, though?" he asked doubtfully. "Shiro and Kaito sure, their sister uses it ... and maybe Daeron. But that's it."

"We have years to teach the others, but it's mainly in case it's needed. You can still hold a conversation with some of us in a crowded space and more importantly if we need to have a quiet conversation, then we can," Lin explained.

She was thinking for more safety reasons to know sign language, but it would also be good for Earendil when he did need to communicate with them.

Earendil grimaced. He didn't like the idea, even if he did admit that Lin was probably right.

Shiro saw the look on Earendil's face and tactfully changed the subject.

"How is Kyrie coming along?" he asked. "I mean ... she was pretty worked up when you all left, to say the least. Mailon's arrival really shook her up."

He hadn't been there to see her recognize the man, but he'd heard from Ahkshi, and of course he had seen Kyrie that afternoon when she'd come to talk to the group.

"You know.... I think in all the chaos and work to retake the country, I think she forgot that he's even there. Unless she thought he left by now?"

The last part was in a question, it had been a over a season after all and she was sure that the man had fully recovered by then.

"Somehow I doubt that, given her experience with him," Earendil disagreed, shaking his head. He turned back to the nekos. "How is the man, anyways?"

Kaito looked to Shiro and let him answer.

"He's still recovering," Shiro replied, "though he's nearly well enough to leave. I think - and it's just a suspicion, so please don't mention it to anyone else - but I have the feeling that Ahkshi might have been keeping him from healing too quickly so that Kyrie would have to face him again."

He wasn't sure what had happened between the two of them, but he did know that Ahkshi wanted Kyrie to get over it, to put it bluntly.

"Well... if she had any reservations, she didn't show it when we left, and was fine for the trip back," Lin replied, "I mean, we didn't go at a break neck speed like we when we went there, but we didn't need to."

And it would have tired all of them out anyways, it was exhausting when they did it the first time.

"I just hope they'll both be okay," Lin added, "He is reborn, and most reborn don't get their memories back for a long time, and I doubt retain that sense of former self the way that Lancerial and Cael have."

Or Beren, and Beren had the fortunate (or rather misfortune) of having lost his parents at a young age, so there was nothing to hold him down. He was also, from Lin's memory unusually young when he got his memory back.

"Who knows what this guy experienced in his life time or even how old he is, we know Kyrie is certainly very old...."

"Well, for both their sakes, I hope he doesn't end up being like he used to be," Shiro said grimly. "I don't know what he was like, but if he ever goes back to it ... there won't be anything to stop Kyrie killing him again."

Earendil grimaced. He could understand why she would do that.

"What's he like now?" he asked.

Shiro shrugged one shoulder. "Nice enough. Very bitter. It seems the prejudice concerning White Elves isn't just one way ... the way he tells it, he's mistreated everywhere he goes, always being blamed for things. Being refused lodgings. Supplies."

"That doesn't really surprise me, it's very easy to hate one race for hating everyone else," Lin admitted, "Isn't that often the reason why it takes so long for people to get along with each other?"

And elves, she noted had very long memories on top of being immortal, so it wasn't surprising feelings would run high.

"Did he say what brings him far home, or even why he didn't just settle in Caras Galadhon? We're pretty sure he's the same guy right?"

That helped that one family they ran into.

"The same guy as helped Elspeth and Duran and Alaric?" Shiro asked for clarification. "Definitely. I've spent quite a bit of time with him - I started by learning his language but even after Uruloki gave us all the gift of tongues I would go see him. He had all kinds of details of how he helped them. But he really is a nice guy. All he wants is to be accepted by people."

"Maybe a bit too much," Kaito muttered quietly enough that Earendil completely missed it.
