Apparently, Lex's luck had decided to be late that day. He couldn't quite grumble much, though, due to his heel being nipped at by some massive maw that they'd mistaken as a cavern. Thanking Regal and his shields, Lex turned to Oliver with wide eyes and a shrug. All's well that end's well, right? He pointed to the next cove they saw, ushering him to go first.

Oliver wanted to fight back. He wanted to not go into any more dark caves, or find more monsters, he just wanted to see the light of day again... But he couldn't back out when Lex was insisting.

He should have fought harder. But his hesitance saved him from being entirely devoured, and being particularly high-strung to begin with gave him enough speed to avoid most of the chomping. He back-pedalled so frantically he bumped right into Lex in the process, which sent him panicking in another direction like a terrible dinosaur-print pinball. HP: 30/40

Lex squinted at Oliver, shaking his head. The kid really needed to learn how to control his movements in the water.
Choosing a new cove to investigate, the man made quick work of breast stroking into the dank void, not seeing any stones.

And because Lex saw no stones, he turned back immediately and swam as fast as he could. Fool him once, shame on you. fool him twice- more damage to his shield. Regal squawked a reprimand at him, plumage scattering in his headspace.
Returning to Oliver, Lex pointed at another cove. Yes, Oliver, you did have to go first.

Oliver really did need to learn to control his movements underwater. When he stopped flailing he was suspended upside down, slowly drifting away from Lex with his feet over his head and an extremely worried expression on his face.

Oliver shook his head. No, he didn't want to go first, he wanted to go back to the surface now... He was cold and frightened and longed for his narrow little bed and thin blankets and soft, huggable pillow. As he drifted towards the cove anyway, he didn't even know what hit him. The tentacles wrapped around his body so suddenly he nearly shouted, only just barely keeping it under control. Using his weapon was the first thing that came to mind, but instead of summoning the switch axe, he merely stabbed at the tentacles in a panic with the long tooth he wore. They let him go in a hurry after that. HP: 23

Lex shook his head rather sadly, not at Oliver, but the circumstances they'd fallen in to. Not only had they encountered the Kraken, but they'd found nothing to show for the time they'd been under water either. Seeing as Oliver's little cove turned up nothing but pain and tentacle things, Lex chose a lower cave, hoping that perhaps the others had only taken from the top.

No runestone, just seaweed. Really aggressive seaweed, to be fair, but they weren't down here for a flora examination, now were they?
Swimming back to Oliver with a frown, Lex pointed skyward and shrugged. It was up to the boy - give up, or keep searching.

By the time Lex had finished investigating his own little cove, Oliver was taking measures to keep some of his remaining warmth inside. Arms folded in front of his chest, shoulders hunched, he looked up in the direction the older Life trainee pointed... And mistook the gesture to mean he should search the little cave a few feet above them.

The result was to be expected, if he had disliked swimming with seaweed before the island, he really hated it now. The stuff had always seemed to cling miserably, but this was way too intentional! By the time he jerked away, he was more than ready to head back to the surface. HP: 22

Lex took Oliver by the shoulder, giving him a cheery thumbs-up and big grin, despite their bad luck with finding rune stone. They'd just have to come back next week, fight more monsters, and hopefully get some runes to actually practice their carving in.
For now, they were headed back to the surface, Lex on the lookout for any shadows that might approach them. After the Kraken, it seemed that nothing was going to come for them - until Lex was staring a bus sized, multi-finned shark in the face. In a flash, Oliver was shoved out of the way and Lex attempted to quickly follow.

No sass from the gryphon ALWAYS meant bad news. Lex kicked harder, pumping calves and quads in a vain attempt to gain speed over the titan that was chasing them. A n** on his toes alerted him that they needed to get the hell out ASAP.

Oliver was incredibly relieved when Lex started to head back to the surface, he had almost forgotten the tentacled monstrosity that had attacked them on the way down. However, all that fear came rushing back in an instant the moment Lex gave him a shove, and he glanced back to see the giant shark.

Why could things never be easy?
Oliver saw another shark swerve towards them, and he frantically swam towards the surface. He had learned there was a limit to the FEAR shields provided by their weapon partners, and had no desire to get torn apart by a giant shark!
