"I though giants waited at the top of beanstalks, not dragons," Jack said with a snort. But he decided, surprisingly, not to correct Chel about what "evaluation" meant; Owain had asked him not to rain on her parade before it even began. The cut and dry reality wasn't worth explaining anyway: the meal itself, her attire, her attitude, the length of time spent, individual scores on what topics were brought up, and a host of other details were all he had in mind.

The curious thing was that Chel really did sound enthusiastic about it. And here h had been waiting for her to give up or take it back like it was some elaborate and pointless prank. It was almost...refreshing to see that energy at work. Maybe he hung around too many assholes.

At any rate, Jack held his cup up as she left, his lazy way of saying goodbye. All he could think was, Those poor god damn recruits.

And then: What the hell did I just sign myself up for?
