"M....Me?" she asked, startled, then flushed warmly herself. She gave a small shrug and looked away.
"I... I don't know... I feel... confused. Like I want to keep having jokes to make you laugh, because I like the way you laugh but like... like I suddenly can't think of any, or speak clearly. Like I want to make you happy...and I don't know how."

Yakinori felt himself grow a fierce, well fiercer pink....if pink could be considered fierce. He wasn't sure it could be considered fierce, but it felt fierce. Why was he talking about fierce? She was saying things that he wanted to hear. Whatever this, whatever this was....she felt flabbergasted too.
"You do?" Well, he wasn't sure what to say or do next. "You want to make me happy? I mean, well...that makes me happy."
Suddenly it was as though some pieces clicked together and words came a little easier. ""So I like you, and you like me." There wasn't a problem, he didn't need to please her or her him. She liked him even as he was being awkward. Some of his nervousness fell away.
"I...this has never happened to me before."

"Of course I want to make you happy," she said, startled that he would be surprised by this. She turned to face him, frowning a bit. "Of course I like you!"
He could see the moment of realization as it spread across her face. The moment she realized that there was like and there was like and he meant the latter.
The flush had started to go away when she turned to face him, it came back in a rush, full force as she realized what she said, and what he had meant. Her eyes widened, and she suddenly wasn't sure what to expect, she just knew that it was kind of hard to breathe and she was a little terrified of what he might say or do next...

Her first words made him smile so wide that he thought it would touch his ears. Impossible, he knew. But it felt like it. She wanted to make him happy, she said it so simply. Even though, he really didn't know what to think or what to think that meant. He just knew that there was something there that made him smile more than he ever had before. More than friendship.
She turned to look at him. Yakinori watched as her eyes widened in shock, the pupils dilating. His heart sank even as her cheeks flushed. Did she not mean like the way he had? His mouth felt dry and he wasn't quite sure what to say.

She stared back as the awkwardness and terror grew.
Why wasn't he saying anything?
Had she been wrong? Had he meant that he liked her and not that he liked her....? Was he now horrified at thinking that she liked him?
She was not used to feeling this way and didn't like it. She squirmed in the sad, tail thrashing in the shallow surf nervously.
Why wasn't he saying anything?
