The offer recieved a disgusted look, but she nodded her head anyway, "You could." Because she was a <******** professional. "And yes, I do enjoy reminding you about how useless you are, yes indeed." It was almost a balm of sorts, to keep a steady verbal stream of abuse going in his direction. At the very least, it was a less disastrous outlet for the feelings his presence and words never failed to provoke.
The statement about Taym made her stomach drop, she didn't want to discuss him or anyone she cared about with Jan. Too many vulnerabilities were already clearly marked out for the man. But she wasn't about to lie either and silences were just as telling. Turning back to her work, America replied stiffly, "Of course I don't want him to go. Not for that long and not with only one, fairly useless and underhanded person as his only back-up."
The girl tried to step away and create some space as she put the bags in their special waste bin and aggressively stripped off the gloves. "It's a ******** disaster. Where's that clipboard?"

He liked the idea of going to Halloween with her, alone it would be too revealing in the golems to anyone observing, with her he could be Jan, she could bounce off of him and he could feed off of the energy she exuded constantly every moment of every day. "Then I will hold you to that. I am always willing to learn."
Even as she moved away, he sidled closer, disinterested in the work now that he had her to be acutely interested in. "But he'll go. Because he was asked. And he came here didn't he? Did you know he had a daughter?" he didn't know the other man had one, he merely suspected based on his reaction to the question, the brief flicker of shock, the searching look. It was a bluff he felt like playing. "If he listened to what people wanted, he probably would have stayed with that kid wouldn't he?"
He smiled and it wasn't a very pleasant one. "You could counter and say the same about me, but my daughter is dead, maybe I told a little fib when I said she was fine when I went back to see her, she was fine, but she was also dead."

She froze because this was information that she couldn't parse quickly, the echoes of her own life distorting it, making it difficult to process through the reflexive emotions of years. And this was Jan. Who she could not trust, not even the littlest bit.
Wordlessly she pulled out her phone and sent a message, not looking at the man, no longer trying to get away from him.

He let his expression drop because in the moment it didn't matter, her reaction was all he could have hoped and more besides.
Sidling nearer, he tried simply to get a look at what she was writing. "It hurts to trust a liar." he said.

He might have caught a glimpse of the conversation before she pressed the phone to her chest and pointedly turned it off, but it wasn't particularly informative. "Don't worry," she responded easily, looking him straight in the eye, "I've never trusted you at all."

He gave her a wan smile, meeting her gaze unflinchingly. "I didn't ask you to trust me, I asked you to ******** me missy, and that's all you've ever given me. But I'm not a liar in this, nor was I in that you'll find out in due time." he shrugged his bony shoulders.
"There's no need to start getting flighty." There was a slight edge of challenge in his tone. "There's nothing to be afraid of."

Back straight, she pulled herself up to her full height and stared down at him. America's voice was low and clear as she spoke, without uncertainty or hesitation, "I'm not afraid of you."
She was afraid of what he inspired, afraid of the loss of self it could lead to. But this man, at the end of the day, was just a man. A bit worse than most, but nothing to fear, not here and like this.

The hardness went out of his smile but he didn't break the . "Good." he said, laughing. "Because that would be a downer, I tell you what. And I enjoy your company." The word company was laden with sultry proposition
He let his eyes wander, and he delighted in the challenge she presented. Not afraid. He wanted to test her resolve on that, wanted to see if he could ever make her renounce that statement. And if he couldn't, then she was more perfect than he thought and he would only be pleasantly surprised.
"I look forward to getting to know your friends better too."

The knuckles around her phone grew white and a quiet cracking sound filled the silence. Wordlessly, she pocketed it and wrote down a note on the clipboard to explain the faulty tank. Ignoring Jan, she went back to where she'd left off, methodically cleaning cages and feeding creatures.
Rage edged her every line and movement.

He watched her with the same fascination he always did when she was angry. He wished he could climb inside her head, that he could understand what was going on in there right at this very moment and take the knowledge for his own.
It was never enough and it manifested in Jan by joining her, close by, picking up a minipet he paid no heed as he fed. "What are you doing after this?" he asked carefully. It was a gauge of urgency and devotion, did she have time to kill or was she going to run to the side of her friend?
"Because I have nothing to do."

"I'm busy," America explained through gritted teeth. "I'm going to watch something with a friend." A jerking movement caused her to spill candies out of their bag. Thankfully few in number by this time, it still had her cursing as she knelt to pick them up, growing steadily more angry with just about everything but most especially Jan. Minipet duty was never this ******** awful before, never had their been so many issues in a single shift.

It was indeed serious he decided right then. "Oh right, a movie." he said, giving her an exaggerated wink. "I hope he doesn't lie to you, because that would be a shame. To find out that the only people you should have trusted were the people you didn't."
He dropped a sweet into the flailing tentacles of an octopussy. "Well. My door is always open when you need someone to hate who you feel like deserves it. I don't mind you when you are angry. Your bronco nature's a test of my pacifism. Butch wanted me to fight you back last time. He's such a fiesty thing. I enjoy them fiesty." And it was one of the first times he'd ever given the thing in his head a name out loud.
he said, all rasping murderous good nature, unsure wether he wanted to lick America's hand or bite it.

It would have been better, she could admit to herself at least, if he had fought back. More honest, at least. Cleaner. But expecting that much of this man was a fool's gambit. "I'll keep that in mind." Whether about lies or Jan's open door, she didn't didn't bother specifying even to herself. "Butch sounds like a person you should listen to."
Glancing up at the clock, America quickly finished the last of the cages before returning to the supplies closet.

the ghost snarled.
"Yes. He rather does doesn't he?" he said with the most cheerful sort of tone, skimming after her to get changed out of his own coveralls. She had done far more work than he had. "It is always an absolute pleasure to work with you, in anything." he said. "I feel like the spirits themselves bring us together."

"I'm sure it is," she bit out, slipping out of her coveralls and reaching up to let down her pinned hair. Her hands paused and then abruptly lowered. The idea of doing so around him right now leaving her with an unsettled feeling. "Tomorrow morning we'll go get the replacements."
