If they kept standing there pretending to watch the lemurs there was every chance of Peyton doing what she was tempted to do, but it was too soon for that, wasn't it? She rolled her lips, feeling the slid of the gloss on them, then gave the Lemurs one last glance before steering them away from the glass and out towards the monkeys. Her mind wasn't really on the animals anymore, it was on Noah, and getting to know him better. She tipped her head back, lavender eyes taking in those rose touched cheeks, and kept her temple pillowed against his arm as they walked. "So I know you like Otters, and since you're in Life I assume you're pretty smart. You're very sweet, and generous," she grinned, then continued. "I really don't know much more than that, but I'd like to."

Noah's eyes rested briefly on Peyton's mouth, a wordless thought slipping rapidly through his mind, sensory memory and imagination, but he let it pass. His hopeful sense that maybe she would let him wasn't going away, but he didn't want to make this weird or screw it up. He met her eyes instead. He liked that too. The air outside was cool, but he felt warm anyway. "Thanks," he answered shyly. "Um, not everyone in Life is smart, but I think I am, kind of, at least. I was gonna major in agricultural engineering and maybe help my parents improve their setup at home, I mean, the farm was running fine but there's always refinements you can make in any process, you know? And it's the figuring out how you can improve things and then getting to do it, that's the fun part. Science!" he exclaimed, and did a little fistpump with his free hand, then grinned, half embarrassed and half proud. "Did you know what you were gonna do yet? I mean, before," and he remembered in time that he probably shouldn't declare the name of a secret organization out loud in public.

"Wow, that's pretty impressive." She thought back to what she knew about agriculture, and engineering, it wasn't a lot, but it was enough to have a fair idea. "I bet you could use those skills on Island. I mean now that there's a lot of sun maybe they could plant some crops. Make sure we don't have to rely on MREs again anytime soon." She shrugged. Maybe it was easier said than done, but still. When he asked her in turn the smile faded a little from her lips, and her eyes dropped, looking at the path they were walking on now instead of those earnest peridot greens. "Nothing really," she answered honestly, not sounded especially happy about it. "I didn't have a very steady home life growing up, not after my Mom died." Lips pursed, and she looked back up again, watching his expression. "We moved a lot." Understatement. "Never really settling anywhere for long, so I didn't have a lot of time to really focus on anything like college or high education." It just wasn't in the stars for her. "When they came to me with the offer." He knew what she meant. "It was my ticket out, and I took it."

"I was talking about that to someone, actually. But I've been pretty busy since then. They keep me running when I'm around the labs," Noah said, and shrugged one shoulder. He didn't seem to be upset about the state of things. "I wonder if I could, like, order seeds from somewhere. I heard someone's got a greenhouse, I wonder what they're growing. Vegetables or herbs or something, I guess, I bet the kitchen could really use fresh stuff." The "obvious alternative" hadn't even crossed his mind, apparently. He listened as she answered, paying quiet attention to what she had to say and nodding. "I'm sorry," he said, then, with a slightly sheepish smile, "I'm glad you're here, though."

"If not order, I'm sure you can pick some up somewhere on leave. I mean, we can go anywhere, just a matter of buying the." She paused there, considering whether or not something like customs existed in Deus, and having vague memories that they did not. Though she had never tried to bring back Anything organic. Fruit made it through, that she knew for certain because she had had people bring her some. She gave his hand a squeeze as he apologized, shoulders rolling in a shrug. "I'm glad I'm here, too." It was hard for her to remember what life had been like before her mother died. She remember her; the smell of her perfume, the color of her eyes, the way her eyes crinkled at the corner whens he smiled. All her memory of anything pre-crash seemed to be wrapped up in holding onto the memories she had of pretty blonde woman that had been taken away from her. Everything else was broken family, and more houses than any kid should ever have to cycle through. Deus had been the first taste of stability the girl had had since she was ten. She appreciated it. she finally had a constant home, a chance to make connections with people. A chance at a life, even if it was a strange one.

"That's true," Noah nodded. "Um - are there any, like, veggies you really like? Tree fruits would be harder to do, they'd take a while, unless there's a way to make them grow faster, but then I'm not so sure I'd trust them, considering." He trailed off, tilting his head a little. "But strawberries would be easy," he added, remembering suddenly that she liked strawberries. "Those can even grow in pots, we wouldn't have to have a garden plot or anything, just a window with enough sun or like right outside the dorms." The goofy grin blossomed again as she squeezed his hand. He'd been a little afraid that maybe he'd offended her, but she still seemed to be in a good mood, and she was agreeing. He kind of wanted to hear more about her life, but it sounded like it was something that made her sad, and right now, in the bright, beautiful, cool day, he just wanted her to enjoy herself. She'd tell him more later if she really wanted to. "Look, there's the monkeys," he said, and pointed out the little island with its rocky climbing structure, where a cluster of snow monkeys groomed each other in a patch of sun.

"I'm not picky with my veggies," she grinned, nose wrinkling at the thought of eating anything that had been rapidly grown through artificial needs. They had to worry about enough questionable food, best not to add to it. "Green beans are quite good." Oh, but he had her at talk of strawberries. "My own little strawberry plant on my window sill?" Yes, she wanted that. She wanted that very much. He hadn't offended her. It was in no way his fault she'd had a harder childhood. She couldn't begrudge him his own upraising, living on a farm, a full family. Envy, yes, but not begrudge. Later, when the sun wasn't shining so brightly, when the weather wasn't half so agreeable, when there weren't so many more smiles to smile. Later, if he wanted to hear, she would tell him why she got that sad look in her eye at the barest mention of family, or home lives. As he pointed she followed where he pointed, and an easy smile came easily. "Cute, aren't they?" She hadn't thought about it, not really, but she missed seeing animals around. Normal animals. She hadn't lived anywhere where monkeys ran around wild, but they weren't FEAR beasties. Head tilting, eyes still on the enclosure and the monkeys inside, her free hand shifted to lay over her stomach. "Are you getting hungry?"

"Uh huh, we could do that, you'd just have to remember to water it," Noah confirmed with a hopeful smile. She liked the idea. This was something he could really help her do, and the idea was kind of exciting. It was almost strange to see real animals again after months spent tending to the odd little monstery things in the petting zoo, but it was nice. "I like them. Monkeys are smart," he said. "Did you know that snow monkeys wash their food in water before they eat to make sure it doesn't have dirt on it? Some of them prefer to use salt water because it adds flavor to the food." Like when he'd talked about the snakes, he sounded genuinely pleased by the trivia, happy to share interesting information. "I could eat," he agreed. "What are you hungry for?"

She had known that. Well, not specifically that it was Snow monkeys, just that monkeys in general were smart and do some pretty clever things. Using tools, washing food. Tucking a curl behind her ear, she gave the enclosure a last lingering glance before smiling up at Noah. She wasn't sure what she was hungry for specifically, but this was New York, something would jump out at her eventually. ------- The hotel they had checked into had the fortune of having a P.F. Changs near the top floor. The lady at the front desk had mentioned as they were checking in, and it had who could say no to dinner and show? It had been delicious, a great end to a great day, and now the pair of hunters were heading back to their shared room. The room itself was a nice one. Pale walls, pale dressings on two queen sized beds. They'd stopped in once already, to drop off their bags, but hadn't lingered. As someone that didn't usually care for purses, the Sun had given Noah the card key, rather than trying to keep track of it herself. Now, as they reached the door, she stood the side, shoulder leaning against the wall, and wondered if her cheeks were going to hurt come morning with how very much she'd been smiling over the course of the day. "That was delicious," she mused, grinning up at the young man. "And really fun. The whole days been really fun." Fun and carefree, easy. Uncomplicated.

It had been a long day that felt like a short day. They'd played tourist shamelessly and enjoyed themselves mightily doing so, and Noah thought he'd never stop smiling. Dinner had been great too. He hadn't expected any of this, but maybe that just made it better. He took the key card out of his wallet and swiped it carefully through the lock to open the hotel room. "I've had a lot of fun," he agreed as he opened the door, smiling back at Peyton. It was just nice to hang out with her. Not complicated, not difficult, not awkward. Had anyone asked beforehand, he would have guessed that things would be awkward or weird, because she was pretty and confident and just really cool, and he never quite felt sure of himself, but it somehow hadn't been an issue. It was just easy to be around her, in a way that he'd never experienced before, and he liked it, and he liked her. He toed his shoes off inside the room and set the keycard down on the table, then peeked over at Peyton. "Thank you," he said, a little shyly.

Following him in, she too toed her shoes off and nudged them to rest beside his next to the door. The carpet was thick under stocking covered feet, full and plush, and it spoke to the quality of the hotel at large. Quietly, she trailed the taller hunter into the room, and headed towards the bed closest to the wall and her bag resting on top of it. An almost goofy smile followed Noah's gratitude, and she busied herself for a moment digging in the backpack for sleep wear. "Thank you," she countered, looking up to grin at him as she found the shorts and tank top she'd packed and pulled them out. Taking on a somewhat flushed appearance the girl took a step towards the bathroom. "I'm going to change, get comfortable." He could do the same while she was in there. That goofy grin returned as she walked backwards towards the little hall, and actually bumped into the wall before turning and disappearing into the bathroom. Inside she stripped off the dress and the stockings, folding them both neatly before pulling on the jogging shorts with their high slits up either thigh. The tank top was a looser one, not quiet to clinging, but it was a bright color that brought out the unique color of her eyes. She took her time, pulling the bobby-pins from her hair, and dropped them into one of the little water cups next to the ice bucket. She took her time. Ran her fingers through her hair to make sure it lay neatly. Brushed her teeth. Checked to be sure her make-up wasn't smudged or smeared. She took her time to give him time to change, but also because she wanted to appear presentable. She liked Noah, things had been going wonderfully all day. It mattered what he thought of her. It mattered if he thought she was cute. Pretty, Cautiously she opened the door. "Are you decent, sir?" Title or endearment, it was softened by a giggle.

Noah looked at the closed bathroom door for a few moments, thinking about everything and nothing, a very specific everything and nothing that was still kind of blowing his mind. He really had no idea why Peyton would be interested in him; he was nervous, kind of boring, and gave in way too easily. But he was finding it easier than he'd expected to believe that she did like him. There wasn't anyone to impress or show off to; they were strangers in a city of a million people here, and still they'd had fun all day, talked all day, and she'd listened to his endless well of trivia with apparent interest and a genuine smile that he couldn't have resisted even if he wanted to. And she'd held his hand, stayed close to him all day, tucked up against his side or arm while they saw the sights and explored the neverending parade of new things to see that was the Big Apple. This was ... real, and he didn't quite know how to deal with that and he really, really didn't want to mess it up, he'd made a bad first impression and somehow managed to recover from that and start a friendship anyway, a friendship that was rapidly shifting towards more than that. He thought, very briefly, of Al, then ruthlessly smothered the thought and the swell of hurt that came along with it. That had been something that happened between people who were very much like them but ultimately weren't, and Al had made it painfully clear that he thought it was funny, that he hadn't taken it seriously and hadn't cared enough to come back and stay friends after that strange, awkward moment in the dark and early morning of New Year's. One moment had ruined everything, a friendship he'd overstepped and lost. He didn't want to lose this too. But this was different. This was just ... just them, and it hadn't been teasing, and maybe if Maebe hadn't kissed him during a fight he wouldn't have believed anyone really might want to kiss him, but there was evidence, and Noah's thoughts kept returning to Peyton's smile and the way her shoulder felt against his arm and the fact that she was here at all, with him, had gone off on leave just to spend the day with him -- with him! -- and they'd had fun and it was just ... easy.ARE YOU GOING TO BE NAKED? Lazarus inquired with some interest. Noah squeaked, feeling his whole face turning hot and realizing that he'd been staring blankly at the bathroom door while he turned ideas over in his head and actually maybe that was a little creepy. He hastily trotted over to dig his sweatpants and old t-shirt out of his backpack. It didn't take long to change, and when Peyton opened the door again, he was folding the shirt he'd been wearing into his bag. "I like to think so," he answered the playful question, and giggled himself. When he turned around, though, he stopped and just stared for a moment. It wasn't like her pajamas were that different from normal clothes, but .... but they were, and he couldn't explain why the sight just stopped him in his tracks the way it did. "Wow," he said, and felt the blush come back and wished he could find something more intelligent to say, because that had been kind of dumb, really dumb, and, and ... his thoughts stuttered to a halt on their own.

Peyton froze under the weight of that stare, color spreading over her cheeks, a soft rosy pink that darkened when he spoke. Delicate fingers hovered near her thighs, the tips brushing the soft material of shorts in self conscious fidgeting. The look on his face was unfamiliar. No one had ever looked at her like that, and she wasn't entirely sure what to make of it. Taym told her she was pretty, and she believed him, but...that was Taym. America and Maebe both told her she was pretty, hot even, but again, for some reason it just didn't sink in. Not like this. Not like those wide, green eyes staring at her as if he something, well, beautiful. At least, that's what she hope that look meant. Toes curling against the carpet, she brought a hand up to comb fingers through curls. Forcing pale gold and pink away from her face. "Wow what?" There was that thread of doubt, the one she'd never been able to banish away completely. She'd come with that self-doubt, and Solomon had done his part to feed it. < You're a beautiful ghoul, Halfpint.> Oh wow, that's kind of you. The sarcasm was thick in her thoughts, but Warrick merely chuckled at her. < Ghoul means female.> Oh. Well then. The blush burning across her cheeks couldn't possibly get any brighter, and for that she was thankful. Standing there, she waited for Noah to answer, because she had to know. Pey acted confident, and in most things it wasn't really an act, but she did doubt herself. She told herself she was pretty, but she knew she didn't the ideal model of feminine beauty. Not tall enough, not curvy enough.

"You're really beautiful," Noah said, then blinked and added hastily, "I mean, not that I didn't think that before, I just, I just thought it again now. Because you are." He shut up again. The brain-to-mouth filter, rather permeable on a good day, seemed to have vanished entirely. Laz chuckled. GO AND GET HER, the weapon urged. I can't just, it doesn't, Noah yelped, managing to keep the words from being out loud through a heroic force of willpower. IF IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT THEN HOW DOES IT WORK? Laz inquired, and even with the massive debuffs to logical thought provided by the presence of a beautiful girl who he liked and his own terrifying nervousness, Noah had to admit that it was a fair question. He swallowed hard and took a tentative step toward Peyton, resolving silently that if she showed any sign of being unhappy with that he'd back off way fast. Beejoux I'm sorry he has insecurities the size of the Hindenburg

She'd thought the blush couldn't get any darker. She'd been wrong. The rush of blood to her face was almost dizzying, and the hand that had been toying with the edge of her shorts moved out to rest fingertips against the wall as if for balance. Beautiful. He thought she was beautiful. A stunned look crossed flushed features, stunned and maybe a little puzzled. Pretty perhaps, but beautiful? < For a human, yes.> Noah took a step towards her, and she blinked up at him as a question slipped out in a small voice. "Really?" The girl wasn't usually so demure, but they were treading into territory Peyton knew next to nothing about. Well, almost. She had the memories from New Years. The confidence, the experience, the knowledge of things she'd never actually done. Standing there, watching Noah walk towards her, she drew desperately on that. Cooling the blush, chasing away some of the nerves, but wings in her stomach only fluttered all the wildly. "You really think so?" It come out stronger, and those pink glossed lips ticked up on one side in a soft, nearly coy smile. She wouldn't make him walk across the room by himself, but started moving so she'd meet him half way, and small hands lifted to rest lightly at his sides.
