He let her go, frowning as all his best intentions and plans swirled the drain. "But...But I didn't mean to. I didn't know she was your pet or we were even talking about that. You were talking about when we went to get minipets and how you hatched on. I thought you were just talking about work." He tried, but he already saw that he hurt her. There was no point now in trying to explain why he said what he did. Right now, he had to address what he could do now.
"I didn't know we were talking about birds. I just...I don't want you angry at me. I want tonight to be nice." He just didn't know what he could do to bring it to that point.

"Then be nice for once and not obsess about the flaws. She's not perfect and neither am I." She wrapped her arm tightly about herself still irritated as hell. He just keeps making excuses.

He lowered his hands, feeling his stomach twist. He hadn't been told that he obsessed with flaws. Instead, he felt he had simply stated the truth and his observations. While he wasn't in any way an optimist, he didn't think that made him prone to just seeing people's flaws only. However, it was comforting in it's own way. When someone didn't bathe or showed they were bad in something he excelled, he naturally felt better about himself. Didn't everyone do that though? Still, what was more of a punch to the gut was what this was doing to someone he was close to and who was near him more than most anyone.
"Do I.....do that with you?"

"I don't want to talk about it right now," she 'answered' and held his camera out to him clearly offering to return it. She felt she was pretty much nearing done here.

He took the camera and held it in his hand, looking at it as he felt shaken and upset with himself. He hadn't just screwed up today. He had been screwing up for a while.
"Our dinner reservation should be coming up soon." He whispered, looking up at her in case she wanted to go alone.

"How long?" She asked for clarification's sake and avoiding the awkward silence that threatened to begin as the conversation seemed to be dropped finally. She felt almost like a child, offering up her most cherished toy only to be scolded and mocked for it until it hurt on such a level part of her didn't even want it anymore - which made her feel worse. Calli isn't a thing, she's a living breathing creature. She might not be made of meat but that didn't make her any less real or alive, despite whatever Melvin might think of it - or her. Rin owes Calli a big hug as soon as she gets back.

"About 12 minutes." He told her, looking at his watch and back at her. "If you still want to look at the garden, you can go." He wouldn't hold her back, and maybe giving her some time in the garden alone would make her feel better. He already felt exhausted and terrible and because he wasn't prepared for it, it hit him twice as hard.
How long had he been hurting Rin?
"I'm sorry."

Rin took the offer immediately and slowly started to wander deeper into the gardens. She heard his sorry and though she took it earnestly, she needed a few moments to herself before dinner. She decided to wander aimlessly and smell the roses so to speak.

He watched her go, and then took a deep breath.
Not going so hot.
No. Pretty shitty, actually. Damn. I shouldn't have insulted her bird. She was so happy one second and then BAM! Right down the toilet.
You should just nod and smile. I heard that's what pretty blondes do.
I really don't need jokes right now. I'm trying to make this a perfect night and I just insulted my girlfriend's pet, made her hate me, and realized I probably have been conversation poison to her all this time - even more than I thought I might be.
Well, just try to be on guard and take it carefully. MAYBE throw her a compliment. Romance it up a little and remind her it's....whatever this day is.
He took a breath again, and watched the flamingos, deciding he'd just stay here until she returned and they could walk together to the Babylon.
In the meantime, he tried to think of a list of things he liked about Rin.

Rin on the other hand had unwound and found herself distracted by more flamingos only this time they appeared to be a small flock instead of just the one. She had completely forgotten what she was mad at after watching the birds strike poses for her for several minutes.

After a while, Melvin headed out to find Rin. While he wasn't a gardener, even he could appreciate the beauty of nature. It reminded him of the cabin his dad would take him to with his brother and uncle. The flowers of course were far more extravagant than anything his mother ever planted, and he wondered if she had ever been to any gardens as over the top as this one.
Calmer, he found Rin and stood a few away as she watched the flamingos. There were a lot more than he expected. "Rin, it's time for dinner. He held out his elbow for her to take, ready to lead her back to The Babylon for their reservation. By now, the sun was slowly starting to fall behind the rooftops, reflecting on glass windows. The automatic lights started to flicker on around them.

It really was starting to get dark. She waved goodbye to the birds before taking Melvin's elbow gently. "I'm really hungry."

He turned, smiling. "Good. It's a full course meal. Just remember that there is dessert too at the end." He was actually excited himself. He never ate in places like this often, especially a restaurant like this, and he really wasn't sure what half the stuff on the menu even was. It just sounded good.
Heading back, the lights were already set and twinkling inside, and he could already see the candles being lit from the glass full length windows that looked out into the garden. Stepping inside, the maitre d was already welcoming a few couples inside, and Melvin stood with Rin as he walked to the front, gave a fake name for her persona here, and was ushered with Rin inside.
They were seated as a booth, the chairs plush and white, a red tablecloth set, napkins white, and flowers freshly cut and set in the center with small tea candles. Champagne was filled into two glasses and set for them, and they were given a menu that only 2 options for appetizer, dinner, and desert.
Live music started to play and a few couples had already started to sit further off from them.
It was time for not looking at flaws. Compliments. Looking over his menu, he took a sip of his Champagne and looked up at Rin. "You're really glowing today." Glowing? What was he thinking? "Really beautiful." He decided to clarify. Wait. Didn't he already say that in the car ride here? Damn! What did girls like hearing more than beautiful. "Sexy." He quickly added on in what was now just a string of words.
He looked back at his menu, just wanting to smack his face with it.

Rin's eyes grew wide as they hurriedly darted about the room to absorb every little detail they could. She'd honestly never been to such a place in her life and was not sure she ever would again.
Rin gave Melvin a baffled look at his attempts at flattery, "you're really bad at this aren't you?" Her tone was clearly amused but hushed to fit the setting.

He looked up from his menu, before adjusting his glasses. "I'm not bad. I'm just...rusty. I haven't gone on actual dates in a long time. I kinda decided to swear off of them years ago. I'm more in my element when I just want to hook up for the night." He took another sip of his champagne, wondering if it was in more taste to get drunk off of such a sparkling, unmasculine beverage.
"If you were just some random soririety girl I didn't care about, I could just lie to you all night." He informed her, checking the menu. "What are you going to pick for a starter? I think I'm getting the Smoked Scottish Salmon." It sounded good, and he could actually pronounce it.
