If she knew he might be pulling punches so as to not hurt her, she would have scolded him. With an intact shield she could handle it. Especially after all she'd dealt with. Though she might have been favoring her side.... out of habit more than anything.
Armagnac grumbled.
"Ha," it wasn't quite a laugh, "she's taking it as well as ever."
Sherry stepped back again, shifter weight, and swung at Jake, blade coming in from the side. The whole time she was wondering how much she should actually tell him. Armagnac had been rather good when they met, both having trouble expressing herself with only words, and knowing Sherry would step in.
"She doesn't like you. And she's sure you're going to... She says I'm dumb."

Hey, he was just being considerate, ok? The last thing he needed was to reopen that rib wound. He had yet to ask her about that also...
"How about... we make a bet?" This had been directed at Armagnac, but it would include Sherry too, of course. Though, perhaps it wasn't such a smart idea of him to suggest it at that time, considering her weapon already had a charge... Regardless, he swung the blade, letting her know he WAS taking this seriously.

Sherry raised an eyebrow. "What kind of bet?" Then she was flinching, as Jake landed a very solid hit, slicing at her shield. Good, he wasn't going to baby her. She was fine.
Armagnac grumbled, and Sherry decided to answer one good hit with another. She grinned, and Armagnac glowed as Sherry brought the blade in. She wouldn't need a hard hit, all they needed to do was hit that shield.
"Sure. We'll make a bet. What are the terms."

He winced slightly as the blade bit into his shield, feeling somewhat drained as charge drained at his shield. "If I win... she has to accept the fact that I've changed." He moved in, delivering a counter attack. "And if you win... I'll do whatever she wants." There was a protest in his head. "... that doesn't involve maiming or killing myself."

Sherry took that counter-attack, and pushed back with a hit from the butt-end of her glaive, stepping back.
Armagnac was laughing. It was a menacing cackle, and she did explain a few things to Sherry.
The Life Hunter shook her head. "She says you can't make her accept anything, and she'd too delighted about you doing what she says. It sounds like a bad idea, Jake."

Jake only shook his head. "At the very least, she has to stop pestering you about it and let it be. I can't stop her from hating me, but I want her to stop giving you grief about it. That is, unless you don't trust me also..." He was baiting them both, and even Cheater questioned if this was such a good idea, but he was determined. He wanted both of them to know that he was no longer the dickwad hunter who constantly played with Sherry's emotions.
His weapons flickered with a charge, and to show that he was serious, he rushed forward, delivering two rapid strikes. It probably would have been more effective if he actually hit harder.

Sherry flinched again, and proceeded to move back again. "I trust you, or I wouldn't be here. It's just... She's still gloating because she's been right before. More than once, about you anyway." It was suddenly hard to look him in the eye, so she watched his feet while she moved forward for another attack. "I trust you, Jake. But I'm worried you'll wake up and realize you've been lying to yourself about what you want or you'll change your mind again." She felt it was somehow contradictory, to trust someone but fear they'll go back on it. It caused a feeling of shame, and she hated herself for feeling that way. "I'm scared. I'm sorry." Her words hurt more than the strike she delivered, and even then, it was enough to make him back off and admit defeat. She said she trusted him, yet her body language differed. He felt a pang as he saw her move away, and he wondered if the damage he had done was already permanent.
His weapons were desummoned, and he stood, staring down at his own feet. "I suppose... there isn't really anything I can do to convince you I'm telling the truth, and even though my feelings for you won't change, I can't make you feel the same way about me. But... a deal's a deal, and I lost. I'll do whatever Armagnac tells me to do, even if it means staying away from you."

Armagnac was desummoned, and Sherry stood there, silent, for several, too long moments. Armagnac laughed and rumbled, and Sherry listened. "Would you?" She looked at Jake, then down and away. "Would you stay away over something like this? 'Cause she says if that's what you want, you're not going to be blaming it on her." Sherry had to swallow a lump forming in her throat. "I'm sorry if my answer upset you. I hate myself for it. I don't think you're lying, I do believe you, I trust you. I just... Every time I think I'm happy, I think we're happy, I'm forgotten, or pushed away, or lied to. I'm afraid... I don't like feeling unwanted by you." She'd been honest, she was still being honest, but she could see she'd upset him. It hurt to know she'd done that, but the fear wouldn't go away, as much as she'd wanted it to. And just like that, Sherry understood why Armagnac said she'd been broken. She blinked away tears and tried to smile. "Armagnac says you're doing a piss-poor job of proving her wrong." Sherry very badly wanted to hug him.

"It's not." If anything, he hated himself for making her doubt. It was his fault that she couldn't trust him, and even when he wanted to fix things now, it was too late.
He gave her a weak smile when she mentioned Armagnac, and moved toward her, pulling her into a hug. "Then how about... I take you out for Valentine's day, to make up for all the help you've given me? I did promise you we'd get waffles."

Sherry didn't know how to reply. She'd be upset if someone told her what she'd just told him, and if Jake said it...
She was glad when he took the initiative to hug her. Relief washed over her as she hugged him back. Maybe he wasn't too upset. She clung to him, tightly, hoping he'd understand somehow. Time, she just needed some time. Time and a little bit of love.
Squeezing him tighter, she nodded and laughed. "I thought you'd forgotten about that." Her voice had the strain of someone who'd tried very hard not to cry. "But are you sure?" She knew dates weren't really his thing.... for that matter, should she be hugging him so hard?

To be honest, Jake was happy she hugged him back. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to take it if she pushed him away. "Yes." He pulled his head back to look at her face, thumb brushing away a few stray tears before leaning down to kiss her. "I'm sorry for hurting you. I promise I'll really try to make it up to you."

"I know," she whispered. She was still full of emotions, but at least the negatives on had calmed. Just the right bit of comfort. "This is a good start. And I'm sorry, too." Then she kissed him, be she wanted to.
"Mmm, what shall we do now?"

Apologies aside and both no longer feeling depressed, Jake smiled and stepped back, extending a hand towards her. "I should be asking you what you want to do. I might have agreed to do whatever Armagnac asks, but that doesn't mean the offer won't extend to you too."

"You mean it didn't already?" She smiled at him, taking his hand. "She says you have your orders, by the way."
Stepping up close to him again, she began to lead them off the training grounds. One spar was enough for the day. "I think you should show me your room." A nice quiet walk back to the dorms would be nice, too. "If you have time, of course."
