Fatal Striker

Silvia took the mysterious man's hand as well and followed him to the dance floor. 'He seems so familiar yet, I can't point out why,' she thought. She danced with him for a bit in silence until he broke the ice between them. She was about to say that she didn't think she would have met him before until he introduced himself and said his name. 'What?! So this is why he was so antisocial with me when we were dating. He was off at parties and picked up woman! I knew it!' she thought, jumping to conclusions from hunches she had before. She decided to see what else he would do at parties like these and decided to keep her identity a secret, making up a false name. "Familiar? I don't think so. I'm Laura Story. I've heard about you. Aren't you that famous detective that everyone's talking about?" she said, coming up with a slightly different accent to throw him off and see what happened next.

James had still no clue it was Silvia. "Nice to meet you Laura, and yes... I suppose you can call me famous. Although I still don't think of myself important enough." He kept dancing with her. For being a man who rarely danced, he was pretty good at it. She too was a great dancer and even if she wasn't James was taken aback by her beauty and how well her clothes adorned her features. "You have a different accent than those who are native to London. May I do ask from where are you?"

Silvia noticed that he was falling for her scheme and smiled to him happily. "I see you have noticed. I was originally from Japan but moved here when I was only 14 years old. I learned my English here and have become more fluent. Though I still have my accent from Japan," she explained, making up the story as she went on. She thought it was pretty believable since there have been a few Asians around in London as doctors or teachers. "One can only expect such a great detective to catch such small details."

James chuckled at her last comment. He surely was attentive to small details but it wasn't because he was a detective, but undead because of his ex girlfriend. "Ah~ Well, you see. I'm not attentive because if my job. It's more like a skill I acquired because of a past lover." he confessed. James did many things for Silvia but at the end their differences were too much for them both.

Silvia raised an eyebrow to continue the story. "Oh? A past lover?" she asked. She knew he must have been talking about her, but had come to conclusions that maybe it was another woman he had been with. "Will you mind telling me about her? Is she a secret and you won't tell me?" She wanted to know more about what he really did and who he was really talking about. But then again, she never really did get to dance with him like this and for some unknown reason liked it. It made her seem like she was seeing a different side of him that seemed more sophisticated.

James thought it was rude to talk about past lovers to a woman. He even thought he might bore her but she did ask so it would be considered even more rude if he didn't answer her. "Not a big secret about it. She's a detective too. Things didn't work out between her and me even though I really tried changing for her. I guess at the end our stubbornness is what separated us. Sometimes I think that if she and I had compromised... or talked things out things would have turned out differently... I'm sorry. I shouldn't be telling you all this." he sighed at first but then glanced back at her with a small modest smile. "I even learned to dance for her but we never got the chance to attend a party like this. Heh, you're my first dance partner miss." James believed he had let out too much personal information. He had to focus on his mission. The reason why he was here. I've been socializing long enough... When is the mysterious person going to show up?! he wondered.

Silvia listened to him and realized he was talking about her even though he didn't know about it. She smiled and looked down a bit, letting her guard down as well. 'I guess I should have been a bit more flexible so we could have lasted longer together,' she thought. She looked back up at him with a small blush, not knowing why but smiled a bit to try to hide it. "I guess that should be a privilege for me to have to first dance with you," she said. She really did feel special that she got to dance with him and not anyone else. She had already forgotten the reason why she was there in the first place.

James seemed to have forgotten again the main reason that he had come to the party. He was just having so much fun with Silvia. He was feeling an emotion that he hadn't felt in a long time. Last time he felt it was when he was still going out with Silvia. "You really are a magnificent woman, but I am afraid I must leave now. Plus, I feel like I'm betraying myself because my heart still aches for someone else. But shhh. It's a secret." he said with a wink. Of course he was talking about Silvia. If he was asked about it in the future, James would deny he said it. "See you around ma'lady." he bowed to her and soon vanished into the crowd.

Silvia felt something move around that had seemed dormant for a long time. She had felt it before yet she didn't exactly know why. She giggled and nodded to him. "You're secret is safe with me, detective Nicholson," she said, moving some fingers to her lips like she was zipping it shut. She felt her heart skip a beat for a moment as if she couldn't control her heart anymore. She nodded to him when he bowed to her and disappeared. 'I guess I was just jumping to conclusions with him,' she thought and fixed her mask so that it wouldn't fall off and show her real identity. She walked away from where they had been dancing and felt a bit strange being alone in such a big party.

The two detectives had socialized quite a bit but they hadn't done it as much time as it had been intended. So, suddenly, a shot was heard and a loud voice announced something. "Your time ran out detectives. Better time next time." said the voice. Everyone at the party looked scared because of the gun shot and because of the voice that had been talking. They had no clue of what was going on, which led to many to leave the party. James was furious. "Dammit!" he yelled as he removed his mask and threw it on the floor. Another victim and I couldn't do a damn thing about it. he thought. He went upstairs, leaving his mask behind, and began searching the rooms hoping that he would find the culprit and the victim.

Hearing the gunshot, Silvia looked around to see who was the one who got shot and who was the one who did the shooting. She got through the whole crowd and removed her mask. 'How the bloody hell could I let this happen?! Stupid socializing part to throw us off!' she thought, mentally slapping herself. She ran up the stairs as well and saw that James was already up there looking through the rooms. She blushed when she realized that she had taken off her mask and her identity was totally exposed to James. 'Oh gawd. Why didn't I keep my mask on.'

James turned around as he heard a familiar voice. He suspected it to be Silvia's and he was not wrong. Much for his surprise he saw her wearing the same exact clothes of the woman he had been dancing with just a while ago. Oh, bloody hell! he thought realizing what had happened. He sighed and pretended to pretend.... "Seems like you're late my darling. Did I sweep you off your feet that badly?" he said with a smirk. Now that he was with her and knew that it was indeed Silvia, his stubborn and witty self came out. It was a complete different James than what Silvia had seen a while back.

Silvia felt her blood boil when he pretended to have acted like he didn't know it was her he was dancing with. "Well then. You seemed to have told me lots of your secrets while we danced," she said, crossing her arms and blushing in anger. "You even acted like you didn't know it was me, love," she said, digging the knife of anger deeper with her last word. She turned away and walked down the stairs, not wanting to go look through the rooms anymore from how angry she was.

"'It was all an act, my dear. Just like our past romance." The two of them were just too stubborn. If there were only something that would make them realize how wrong they were and how wrong they are right now. If they were together like 5 years ago, or just worked together then maybe this crime would have already been solved! I think she suspects nothing. Damn. How could I've not realized she was that woman?! I told her everything!... James sighed and decided to go have a drink at a nearby bar. He needed some scotch to ease up.

Silvia felt even angrier when he talked about their past romance being an act. 'That's it!' She turned to him one last time. "Well, I am truly sorry if I ever took you seriously since I have met you!" she yelled to him before walking away back to her home, not caring if her feet were going to hurt from the long walk home. As she walked home, she felt something wet on her cheek and wiped it away, figuring out that it was her tears. 'Why am I even crying? He's not worth my tears! It's not like I believed whatever he said.' She got home and went to take a bath to try to calm herself down and stop herself from crying, not understanding why in the first place.
