The moths were the final straw, as they fluttered chaotically towards him his survival instincts kicked in. Throwing his welfare into the hands of the ghostly weapon, he leapt towards the window, using the claws to shatter the glass rip as much of it out as he could, and if successful to use only them to grip the window frame and leap out into the garden.

He didn't want to see today.

He was very attached to being alive.

The moths shed the girls body like a dress, leaving her still and boneless on the floor. They peeled away from the bed, briefly revealing two peacefully sleeping figures before obscuring the hunter's vision entirely as he was swallowed whole by the seething cloud of small, fluttering bodies. The sound of their wings warped and twisted in his ears, turning into whispers as they tightened around him with a gentle force that held crushing intentions.

Butch said calmly as they were enveloped in moths, escape denied. It was Lawrs turn to leave calmness far behind. He felt nothing about the world and the people in it but he cared deeply that he continued to be a force in that world. Humanity would be lessened by his absence and at this point he felt like his protection was divine. So he fought. Fought like a cornered animal, which butch knew well, resisting the moths with everything his wiry frame had, trying to reach the window.

The pressured persisted and the bodies seemed to still and harden around him. Moments later the cloud shifted like a veil and revealed no a window, only a skyline and a series of roofs growing smaller and smaller below him. Thin, nearly skeletal arms gripped him like iron bars, and something warm rasped against the shell of his ear. A voice hissed, sincere curiosity curling about its corners, "How many lives...are worth your own?"

Lawr froze at the harrowing sight and took a single, slow calming breath. He was alive until he wasn't. That was what he had to cling to and struggling would get him dropped.

"As many as it takes." he said with cold certainly, suppressing the desire to shudder.

Laughter cracked through the air and the arms let go. "Deal."

He didn't scream. Screaming was such a pointless endeavour, it wasn't part of his instincts. What was part of his instincts was bracing himself for what would likely be a quick and painful death. He kept his eyes closed, the only thing he wanted to be looking at in his final moments, if that's what they were, was himself.

He woke up in the grass, not far from his house, a sharp pain in his side. He was being kicked in the ribs. A Death hunter staring down at him in fury and kicked him again, "...can lead them right to your family! You got the talk and you still tried?! I don't care how much you love them, but all you'll do is endanger them now. ********!"

Another ********!"

He hunter panted over him, eyes bright with rage and tears, "We didn't get here in time, you're daughter's dead, your ex is fine, they never even woke up...but the girl..." he choked on his grief for the life lost.

As the man wept, loudly and without shame, a single moth bounced happily through the air, landing on the man's head for just a moment before launching itself back up again. Just a small reminder, that Lawr had made a deal, the terms of which he failed to define through his own inflated self-worth. An infinite task had been set before him, and they will not forget.
