He had a feeling they were both off honestly, but he wondered if that was best. Even the constant thrum of a human being had its blips. And, after all, there was always a rhyme and reason to why things happened, or at least that was what Jack believed. Something had decided they needed to bump into each other today, just a little off from their usual selves, and he was intent on finding out why.

"I'm telling you: much easier to let it go than to wallow. I suppose you get some leeway since it just happened, though." He stretched his legs onto the chair next to him, languid as a cat. "Let's not talk about exes, huh? Far too depressing. I can always go find you some sugar if that's what it takes to pep things up again," Jack suggested with a little grin. "Personally, I could do worse than a smiling, touchy-feely chick in my social circle. Only ones I know are either pissed with me or very confused about their position." Pause. "Or they enjoy hitting me."

"Sugar?" She echoed, blue eyes growing round, "...Like candy, or something?" She supposed that sweets did tend to make people feel better. From all those movies she had watched during her teen years, breakups always seemed to be followed by gorging oneself on copious amounts of ice cream, but she didn't have any to gorge herself on.

(But she wished she did. Oh, did she ever wish...)

Emitting a bright laugh, she lifted her brows at him while grinning. "Should that worry me some? What exactly do you do to warrant girls getting mad at--or wanting to punch--you?" There was a beat where her expression suddenly grew blank, and then she released one of the hands holding her cup of coffee to point straight at him in an accusatory manner. "Because don't do it to me when I actually like you right now."

Granted Eva felt that it'd take quite a bit to get under her skin, but it certainly wasn't impossible.

"What did I do?" Setting his elbow on the table, he lifted his bangs and scratched at an otherwise hidden scar at his brow, purposefully showcasing it. "No earthly idea," Jack answered, his grin turning smug. "Maybe it's just my contrary nature. Maybe you give a bunch of people weapons and a short temper and they just go off on you when they want. One chick literally put me to a rematch since I beat her in the tournament--very fair when she's an intermediate, I tell you--and I still kicked her a**. Doesn't get me many favors, looking mean and green and freakishly tall. Say one thing wrong to the wrong person and suddenly it's a damn vendetta on your plate, just because you had some bad history before."

Some of this was exaggeration, of course, and definitely missing key pieces of information, but he felt like being a little dramatic. Besides, it was refreshing to come across someone who didn't have a preconceived notion of him for once.

"Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if someone comes and finds you later about your ex just to piss you off some more; happened to me when I got here." He took another long sip with a wry look and pointed his cup in return. "I wouldn't jump to conclusions there, Eva. First impressions aren't everything."

(Yes, yes they were.)

Eva seemed sympathetic upon hearing his story—or well, somewhat sympathetic, at least. Leaning forward, she suddenly reached out and bat his face—no his cheek, but his face straight-on—gently with her hand. It was pretty obvious that she was starting to feel a little better when her space-invading, touchy-feellyness was coming back. ”Maybe you should consider dying your hair a friendlier and more welcoming color,” She suggested, her tone light and teasing, ”How about pink? It might offset your height and your sometimes-grumpy face.”

”I am sorry that you’ve had a hard time here though,” The woman murmured, finally letting her hand drop, ”And I certainly hope that no one comes to talk to me about Otto. It’s not like I hate him—I don’t think I ever could—but I’m just not really…” Trailing off, she wrapped her arms around herself, her eyes glazing over for a moment. She didn’t let herself dwell on the thought for long though, especially since she had already spilled her guts to Jack for the past…while.

…How long had it been anyways? She froze while her coffee cup was halfway to her lips, a quiet “huh” escaping her lips. ”I was going to train today,” She murmured aloud, mostly to herself. Gaze flickering to the man then, the corners of her lps quirked upwards in a sheepish smile.

”And you should probably change out of that coffee-stained shirt, shouldn’t you? I’m sure you have your share of chores to attend to too.”

Pink. He snorted and shirked away from her touch like a cat that hadn't given permission to--and a wrinkled face to match. Eva hadn't been kidding about being naturally touchy, had she. "It's nothing I'm not used to," Jack said with a shrug. "My family could do a better job." Just a sliver of information for the buckets she'd given him--which was more of a concession than most got.

"For what it's worth," he continued as he pulled his legs back in and pushed his chair out to stand, "if people come and mess with you, I'm always happy to intervene; sort of my shtick, sticking my nose where it doesn't belong." He was smiling again as he downed the last of his coffee. His schedule was very . . . out of balance now, but he was choosing to believe this time investment would reward him with something.

If nothing else, he could use more friendly faces.

"You are correct, I do have a list of things to do. But! It was a pleasure to meet you, Eva, even if you don't feel your best at the moment." Jack held out his hand. "Seeing as phones have everyone's numbers already, I'll go ahead and tell you that if I'm not in the labs, my room is 163. Mind you, I can be a little brusque if working, but not entirely unapproachable."

A flicker of curiosity flashed on her face at the mention of his family, but he made no move to expand and the conversation was already travelling in another direction. Deciding to let it drop, Eva drained the rest of her coffee in one go and then pushed herself up to her feet. ”I appreciate it, Jack. I think I’ll be okay, but it’s sweet of you to offer—even if you are just trying to be nosy.” She smiled wryly, and then let out a sigh as she glanced down at her empty coffee cup.

Something told her that a lighter mood wasn’t the only thing that she’d be walking out of this encounter with. It felt like she had found an affinity with drinking coffee now, and she wasn’t entirely sure if that was good or bad. As if someone like her needed more caffeine in their system.

Glancing back up,, she blinked in surprise at his outstretched hand before grasping it warmly and giving it a firm squeeze. ”It was nice to meet you too, and thank you—I’m still not a hundred percent, but I definitely feel better now.” And that was the truth—although her heart was still feeling a little heavy, she wasn’t nearly as gloomy as she had been previously. Maybe a little interaction was all that she had needed after all. ”163, got it. My room is pretty easy to remember—Room 123—so feel free to drop by if you ever want to chat or need a helping hand.”[/coor]

Deciding to go on first, she moved towards the door, pausing at the doorway to glance over her shoulder and grin. ”See you later, and thanks for the coffee.” With a little wave, she left and went to attend to her duties.
