“Organic…?”

Shiloh looked at Lucky, then back at Charlotte, not needing to look at Caelius to feel the narrowed look he was surely getting. He didn’t understand it, not totally and at least not how it factored in. Did organic mean they were attached to living things? To people? If that were the case, they had even less of a chance of figuring it out than before, changing the impossible task of guessing where five bombs were on a map with far more than five spaces left into something even more preposterous, upping the guessing space by several hundred people. He didn’t think Charlotte had been particularly generous at all, perhaps generous in that she’d let them live this long but that wasn’t exactly considered generous by normal standards, only by Deus.

“Wait a minute, you can’t just-“

Lucky too, could forego looking at Caelius right about now, and the map, even the danger presented by the nameless individuals posing as civilians lurking just beyond them. He was entirely fixated on Charlotte, eyebrows lowering from shock to disgust as the information slowly clicked in place to form something resembling a conclusion.

"There are thirteen explosives that we have planted at separate occasions on Deus Ex and-"

-"Twenty-six-"

-"Twenty-eight, actually-"

--

"Of the five remaining, how many are inside an actual building."

"Three, exactly."

"Of the two remaining, how many actually exist on Deus Ex-"

--

"That's how the game works, just a small portion in front of you, the rest in the eyes of the player."

--

"Organic ones."

Two organic bombs - planted on Deus Ex - but no longer there - ?

He felt bile begin to rise in his throat. Whatever Caelius had in for them suddenly paled in comparison - he really, really wanted to be wrong.

"Organic," he cut in slowly but sharply over Shiloh's halfhearted protest. He was still staring pointedly at Charlotte, but everything beyond his narrow focus had begun to shift and twist into miscellaneous shapes and colors. His voice was surprisingly steady, at least initially. But here and there it cracked with hidden fear. Animals couldn't survive on Deus Ex for long, certainly not long enough to be considered planted. Unless they had a Fear Shield. And there was only one animal with that capability. "Meaning people. Like me. Right?"

Charlotte seemed to ambitious to sacrifice herself like that.

And then, like a true life hunter, he had to ask: "How?"

"Oh Lucky," Charlotte breathed, and then laughed, and kept on laughing. It wasn't loud, it wasn't spiteful, but it was quite mocking. She leaned closer to him and smelled almost familiar. "That's why you've always been the chosen one."

Then, oddly enough, she turned to Shiloh and Caelius and waited. It was awkward for a second, as a long lapse of silenced paused in which everyone seemed either to be waiting for the next person to make a move, or just digesting a secondary piece of information that was still in the bare tresses of suspicion.

"The marking." The Death lead looked at Lucky as if the Life trainee had just said the most obvious thing. "What did you think the branding repre-"

-"Spoilers." Charlotte put a finger to her lips. "Well, shall we continue. Lucky was right and guessed one. So where is the second?" She turned towards Shiloh, making it painfully obvious who's turn it was. Her tone was mocking, but not abrasive. She enjoyed playing this game.

If the Death lead hadn't so conveniently needed to point out Lucky's idiocy, the whole of what had just occurred might have gone entirely over his head, or at least his answer would be to point at himself in frigid horror, wondering how and when the hell they'd managed to turn him into a walking explosive.

But it was the mark that apparently was the key, and Shiloh, fortunately, was aware of the strange sort of tattoo that had occupied Lucky's hand before Caelius' sword had moved in. Perhaps more fortunately, or to his detriment, Shiloh knew only one other mark like it, at least that he had seen with his own eyes, though the implications of who wore it made the whole situation even more confusing.

His eyes flickered down to Charlotte's boots and their unsettling familiarity, before he looked back up to meet her pointed gaze. It didn't make a lick of sense, but then none of this did, none of this added up, Sam was supposed to be dead. Dead people couldn't be bombs, could they? He leveled a hard look at Charlotte, knowing from her choice of apparel, and her affiliations, just how much respect she had for the dead.

"Sam?"

He wouldn't put it past her.

He also didn't want it to be him.

The guess came, almost a tentative whisper, accusing and shaky on his breath and he dared not look at Caelius, or even Lucky at this point. The moment he said it, it had sounded idiotic, here he was judging Charlotte while he threw the deceased under the bus. But it couldn't be him, he had no mark, no branding, he hadn't given in. There were several others Lucky had mentioned to him but they were on island, they were alive and well, he'd seen them, it wasn't liked they'd been moved, like a dead body could be.

Then again, he knew probably better than anyone, that a weapon tablet didn't amount to much in the schemes of life and death... He was living proof that situations could change, that the dead didn't necessarily stay dead.

Still, he felt momentously powerless and stupid. There was so much that he didn't know, that he couldn't grasp.

It didn't sink in for a few more seconds, even after he'd heard it. Lucky glanced back and forth between Charlotte and Caelius, as if waiting expectantly for some kind of punchline that wasn't just his severely shortened life. Charlotte was certainly laughing. But there was no hint of a joke from Caelius. As far as he was aware the man was entirely incapable of doing so.

He had been played for a fool.

Shiloh at least managed to take over when the uncomfortable silence stretched too long. Lucky was staring at absolutely nothing, and saying even less. Even Shiloh's guess warranted no reaction at all, just a continuation of the glassy-eyed stare. It was a little too much to take in right now. If he thought about it too much he was afraid he would have a breakdown right here and now.

There was no point in asking how long they'd known. Long enough, obviously, to do absolutely nothing. They weren't going to help him.

"Did she know?" he followed up, without even waiting to hear if Shiloh had been correct. "Did Sam know."

"You got to be a little more specific." She was only being blatantly obvious because she wanted something to be found. "So Shiloh and Lucky. Where is Sam?"

He continued to feel powerless and stupid, and now even more confused. It was getting irritating, and all traces of smile or patience slipped from his face as he glared at her.

"We didn't have to be specific with Lucky, Charlotte," he said through partially clenched teeth. "Nice boots, by the way. Prada?"

"Yeah, I bought them a while back," Charlotte smiled brightly, "Glad you still like them. I do think they match this shirt rather nicely."

The train jolted.

"Well," the former Moon assistant checked her expensive watch, "I guess that's it. It was fun, and hey, you got to be heroes. Congratulations Shiloh, you saved the day."

The Death lead made a very close gesture, from Lucky's perspective, to rolling his eyes, or just staring at the ceiling of the train car and then exhaling a little deeper. His arms were still crossed.

"Lighten up," Charlotte chuckled, "You won. Well, you get both fragments, let's play again okay. It's always fun when I get to make up the rules." She stood up and gestured to the two bodyguards, paused, and then turned back. "What, you're not going to attack me or anything?"

"You haven't disabled the last ******** boy. Well, bye guys. Bring a girl next time okay. They're cuter anyway."

She was gone the second after leaving one Death lead who pretty much sat up, took both items off the makeshift table, and left-

- Without Lucky and Shiloh.

Mark had to fetch them about five hours later.
