Amber sat silently within her room. She was sitting crosslegged on her desk, eyes shut and her fingers in little 'o' shapes resting on her knees. It was almost as if she was meditating. She continued to sit there for a few moments, even after students began filing into her classroom and taking a seat on her pillows and floor mats. Suddenly, as if she, hadn't just been sitting stone still, almost as if she was a statue, she jumped off her desk and snapped her fingers. The door swiped shut and all the students' wands flew to her desk in a neat pile. By now she was sure her students were used to this, a few if any even tried to resist her efforts. "Welcome back students!" She greeted them cheerfully, staring them all down with pale green eyes as she walked around the room. If anyone had been watching from a distance, they probably would have assumed she was a model or a stripper rather than a teacher by the way she moved so fluidly.
"Today we'll be practicing the second group of spells. These are still beginner level spells. Mostly spells you learned in your second year of schooling here at Hogwarts. The spells you will be practicing are listed on the board. Please refrain from opening the door. Whichever of you that actually succeed in turning my pillows into birds, I'd rather not have them flying around the school for me to catch." She asked, looking around at the students. As she waited for an answer, she flicked a finger towards her chalk board and the chalk floated up and began listing off a few spells. In order they were, Expelliarmus, Locomotor, and Avifors. Underneath this list was a short bit of instruction that said 'Please begin practicing these spells on the pillows provided around the room. There will be absolutely no use of wands allowed. Remember will, and emotional balance.'

The first group of spells are all first year spells, most likley ones you learned in your first few months here at Hogwarts. Can anyone tell me why we start out with beginner spells when learning wandless?" She asked, looking around at the students. As she waited for an answer, she flicked a finger towards her chalk board and the chalk floated up and began listing off a few spells. In order they were, Wingardium Leviosa, Incendio, and Flippendo. And if the karma patrol take control- I'm gonna be in trouble. And if the moral police ask for receipt- I am gonna burst their bubble. Richen, smidgen, muddy, smutty... Who’s your god; I'm not the type to pray- Except when I fall; I'm only human, after all. ᶜ ʸ ᴿ ᵁ ˁ ᴱ ᶻ ᴱ ᴷ ᴵ ᴱ ᴸ ᴸ ᴵ ᴸ ᴸ ᴬ ᴺ ᵀ ᴵ ᴺ ᴱ ˁᴸʸᵀᴴᴱᴿᴵᴺ │ ᶠᴵᶠᵀᴴ ʸᴱᴬᴿ │ ᴾᵁᴿᴱᴮᴸᴼᴼᴰ │ ᵀᴴᴵᴿᴰ ᴮᴼᴿᴺ
Cy enjoyed Wandless, mostly because it was a very useful skill to have, considering the number of wizards who were reduced to infants without their wands, but also because he was fairly certain Professor Denier actually liked being ogled at by her students, so he really didn't feel any shame about it. Not that he likely would have felt any anyways, but it was always nice to have an excuse. He let someone else answer her question, and focused on one of the pillow in front of him. It began to smoke, material curling up on itself. I played the devil's advocate- I played into his hands! I played the fool; I played the victim... And if you bump into the devil; Tell him I understand. Rather the devil you know. Than the devil you don't.

Much like her brother, she was quite fond of this class (namely for the professor.) Vannah couldn't deny the spark in her eye and the flutter in her heart every time she's in this class. And she sure as hell won't make the same mistake that Tristan did, like utterly fail her OWL's for the class. At least now she can rub it in his face—not like she can rub in the fact that he has a crush on two girls but none of the bollocks to do anything about it. (The ship sailed and she needed a replacement.) Saddling up beside Cyrus, Vannah tossed her head and with a sly smile she said, ”How you been, Foxy Boy?” He seemed like the perfect distraction and she's been rather short on those lately. Almost immediately though, the last student joined them and the professor began her lecture with brief instructions and an introductory question. Just to get it out of the way quick, Vannah chimed in with an answer. ”It's because those spells are best suited to cover the bare basics of spell casting: will, concentration, wandwork, and pronunciation. By going wandless, we'll essentially need to relearn how to cast spells.”
Satisfied, she shifted her focus to the directions on the board then the pillows at her feet. She felt... silly, at first. Concentrating with her fist balled at her sides. And then again with one hand out stretched ahead of her, willing the pillow to rise even just a few measly centimeters; but nothing. Beside her, a tuft of smoke billowed from one of Cyrus's pillows. ”Still people watching in your spare time?” She glanced up from her work with an unapologetic smile trailing along. ”Or moving on to bigger and better things? Like setting pillows on fire?” Rising her right hand again, she chanted the levitation charm a few times over, struggling.

Cy was aware of Savannah Hasting's presence before he even glimpsed her out of the corner of his eyes, mostly because she had always come off as one of those people who very much wanted you to notice when she decided to make an entrance or an exit. This wasn't to cast dispersions on her character; it wasn't like it was any real secret she enjoyed attention, but actions had consequences. Vannah had also been blessed with the gift of making everything sound like either a flirtation or a mockery; Cy found this talent admirable. Where was her silent, noble Ravenclaw? The one who could probably blend into a faded wallpapered hall, a skill most likely cultivated since childhood. The Cades were probably not particularly pleasant, especially when you weren't a Slytherin, Just look at his parents and poor Anti. "Better than ever, Cat." It wasn't a lie; the truth had a very peculiar taste in Cy's mouth, and that was how he could tell. It had been three years; he wondered when he'd become the sought-after distraction. Attention-seeking or not, Vannah had seemed to retreat over the past few years. Maybe it was family problems, he thought sardonically. They all seemed to have them. "You say it like it was a hobby," he smiled. "Maybe I'll make a career out of it. What about you? Considering an exciting future full of floating cushion?" His pillow sparked slightly, and began to crackle. I played the devil's advocate- I played into his hands! I played the fool; I played the victim... And if you bump into the devil; Tell him I understand. Rather the devil you know. Than the devil you don't.

Despite her affinity for judging people like works of art, she had never quite pegged Cy for whatever he truly was. Abstract or realism, she could never decide with him. Rhys had always been abstract; by every form of the verb, to be precise. And Liam... She cast a disparaging look around the class in note of his absence. He was as real as realism gets—and it was because of her that he was gone. Or so she supposed. None of her owls reached him. Or if they did, she never got a response. ”Good,” she told the Slytherin with a smile. ”I can never tell with you Lillantine's.” Not that she ever really tried before. Cy's older brother, Vander, never seemed to have a pleasant day in his life. And the girls', well, they always seemed to be bobbing their heads just above the surface; inches from drowning. Not Cy, though. ”I think I'm the last person to judge what others do in their spare time.” Then a thoughtful expression overcame her as she reconsidered her pillowed state of affairs. ”Hmm. Might be I could make a small fortune smothering grandparents and apparent-heirs.” As an after thought, she flashed a wink and added, ”I hope you'll think of me when I get the business going.”

Cy snorted at the mention of his family in plural- 'you Lillantines'. Despite his parents's best efforts they'd never been a very close-knit clan, had they? The only reason Vander was still hanging around was because of his inheritance, Vio was always in the doorway, stepping in to clean house when necessary, and Anti, he thought, well, she was probably long gone. But she'd never quite been 'there' to begin with. If a family comprised a house, then their house was in shambles, but he was still there, wasn't he? Sitting alone at the table, waiting for dinner to be served. "We're a hard lot to read, I hear," he said bemusedly. "Business will be booming if you offer bargain prices on misbehaving children and ex-lover's pets," he then added unabashedly. One of the wonderful things about being male and being teenage, Cy had learned not too long ago, was that you could quite literally say whatever you wanted and people wouldn't so much as blink. It was almost expected that you be slightly obscene, if only to posture. Boys will be boys, after all. People weren't just willing to look the other way to excuse him; they'd practically blindfold themselves. "I very much doubt you're easily forgotten," he said kindly, and winked back, then looked to his pillow, where a small, merry blaze was now going in full force. With a hand gesture the pillow floated up, then slammed itself into the floor once, then twice, extinguishing the fire on the stone floor. I played the devil's advocate- I played into his hands! I played the fool; I played the victim... And if you bump into the devil; Tell him I understand. Rather the devil you know. Than the devil you don't.

Though she spared him a second glance over her shoulder, she was too busy cursing the pillows in the back of her mind to wonder about that scoff. But there she stood anyway, wondering. It was no surprise why her levitation charm hadn't succeeded; she was far more interested in anything and everything else. If it even moved, she pounced. At this particular moment, that happened to be him. While her pillow never rose off the ground, she did earn a few twitches but part of her had to wonder if that was even her. Or if it was Cy; screwing with her. She didn't think he had the gall to do something like that though... Or did he? Hmm.. ”Ah, but very fun to listen too,” she chimed in. Then cue the theatrical gasp when she added an incredulous, ”that's horrible.” But her smile said otherwise. She thought to fix her attention on the pillows again. The fluffy square hovered centimeters off the ground during their discussion of her future business but his next little quip? She hadn't expected it to take her by surprise. But it did. And the pillow seemed to jerk backwards in place, as if it'd been punched. And it might as well have. Vannah stopped and turned to stare. Did he know something she didn't? Or was she being paranoid again? (Ha! As if it ever stopped.) ”If only that were true...” she hummed, turning herself away. Still, not everything he said had been wrong. ”I ought to make you my business partner.” She said, trying to fall back into the rhythm of cat and mouse, though it felt more like snakes and wolves. ”How're you with numbers? Good I bet. I'll need someone to launder all of my dirty pillow money.” That's when she glanced over at his handiwork and noted, "You're getting pretty good at this."

Cy offered a sympathetic look. "My brother provided a lot of entertainment in his heyday." Occasionally he almost missed hearing Vander curse out a terrified second year over talking too loud at breakfast. Occasionally. Absence was supposed to make the heart grow fonder, but in his brother's absence Cy found it was almost like a well full of rain water slopping in. The less he saw of Vander, the deeper it got, and the water got darker. If he really wanted to get poetic, it was the sensation of slipping down a muddy slope. Mildly enjoyable but still vertigo-inducing. In a way, Vander had grounded him. There was an established role to fit into around his brother's hostility and cold antagonism, like a puzzle piece, or a game; hide and go seek, or tag. Now he didn't have a game- well, more importantly, he had no one to play with. Her conflicting shocked gasp but knowing smile made him grin in a practiced response. Then she stopped and stared, and he knew that was the punch that had landed. Conversations weren't much different from fist fights, but you only knew where to hit after you saw where you ought to aim. It was no wonder the poor girl felt forgotten; she'd never seemed particularly close with her brother, at least not in a way that translated publicly; all siblings had their secrets, after all. Besides, Tristan was busy longing for Lori Townsend- or was circling a better word? Like a vulture. Or a stray dog. And Cade seemed to have fallen off the map, quite literally. "Maybe you need to find people with better memories," Cy suggested lightly. "Oh, I'm a maths genius," he said vaguely. "I can do long division and everything- really, it's quite awe-inspiring to watch." He let himself snicker at 'dirty pillow money'- it really did sound like a double entendre, to be fair, and even if it wasn't, the pun more than made up for it. "Do you think so?" he asked self-critically, turning the ashen pillow over with an almost violent snap of a thin wrist. "I feel like I'm better at nonverbal than actual wandless- it seems more natural to just think it. Mind over matter, right?" I played the devil's advocate- I played into his hands! I played the fool; I played the victim... And if you bump into the devil; Tell him I understand. Rather the devil you know. Than the devil you don't.

Hiding her laugh behind the back of her hand, she could only imagine the dramatic chaos to have ever unfolded in the House of Lillantine. ”You'll have to tell me all about it one day,” she told him, half-joking and half-serious. Not that she ever suspected he would unless a bottle of fire whiskey was involved, but arrangements could be made if she were ever so tempted. Perhaps then her own family life might seem tame. Yeah, she'd much rather eat popcorn and listen to the 'Pureblood Telltale All' as told by Cyrus Lillantine. It was bound to have some form of dark twisted humor in it, and she could do with a bit more of that in her life. It certainly beats penning letters to a vanished Ravenclaw who won't write back. Besides, she had heard of a wedding, either coming up or already passed. Surely, something had to have gone horrifically wrong. Oh, if only she were there to knock the wedding cake into the lovely bride and the dashing groom. Ah well, a girl can dream can't she? ”Maybe you're right,” she said casually, ”Or maybe I'm cursed?” Amused, first with herself then him, she laughed lightly and agreed. ”I'm sure it's fascinating. Sadly, I think the charm would be lost on me—not much of a numbers person, you see.” Allowing herself to forget, made it easy. Easier to breathe, easier to be. Easier to smile along with his snickering and she wondered then, had she ever really heard him laugh before? Like really laugh? She didn't think so. ”I do.” Vannah told him. By now, she had all but given up on her assignment. Focusing wasn't an option. Now it was just a matter of pretending. ”I wouldn't know,” she grinned widely, ”Upside down or topsy turvy? Mind over matter? Or matter of a mind? Is something nothing if anything's something?” Barking laughter, she shook her head and apologized, ”Sorry, it's hard to stop sometimes.”

Cy shrugged. "I could write it all down and have myself a national bestseller." He almost wished his grandparents were still alive and kicking; at least they would have added a bit of variety to the mix. His father, his mother, his siblings- they were all so predictable, running in the same circles year after year. Then again, given what he'd heard about his grandfather, he might not be currently kicking himself had the man not been dead before his birth. "In my experience you really have to put a lot of effort in to be cursed," he said slowly. "Maybe it's a blessing in disguise, you know?" He let himself break into peals of laughter at her rambling, bowing his head slightly before looking back up at her. "I can see that. There's nothing wrong with letting your mind wander, though. It probably helps you see things... differently than most." He shrugged. I played the devil's advocate- I played into his hands! I played the fool; I played the victim... ”So do it,” she spurned him on, ”Or don't.” Vannah shrugged. Who the hell was she to say anything? She'd rather be the other person, y'know, on the other side of the shoulder, with little red horns and a pitchfork saying all the wrong things for all the worst reasons. She couldn't find any source of amusement in there for her, so why bother? ”Flipendo,” she cut in, flicking her wrist and just going through the motions. She could practice outside of class, later, alone. It would be easier anyway. Curling hair behind her ear, jewelry jingled in sway as she leaned far over to one side and tilted her head for exaggeration. ”You don't say?” Then she grinned, and sang in rhetorics ”Well Foxyboy, what would you know about curses and blessings anyway?” She paused and snapped her neck, twisting her head from a right-tilit to a left and blinked owlishly. ”You should try it. Seeing, I mean. I'm sure you'd like it.” Or maybe not, and his head would explode. It's always possible. Isn't it? ”But since I know you won't, why don't you tell me what will do. Y'know... after Hogwarts.” It was an innocent enough question with an innocent enough answer, but if there was a way to twist it, she wanted to find it. ”Probably not writing books or catching pillows on fire...” she guessed aloud. ”I'd guess a ministry job but... you don't seem the type to play well with others...” She could understand that. A cat plays with a mouse for hours before she eats it. Once it's dead the fun is over.

Cy snorted; she seemed nearly serious, but then again, wasn't that like her? Nearly serious, but not quite. It was a good place to be in; akin to in-between a rock and a hard place. "I'm not a writer; not nearly brooding enough." He could see his brother penning some woeful tale of their miserably childhoods- Anti wasn't sentimental enough. "If you keep that up with your neck, one day it'll stay that way," he said in a mocking imitation of a scolding mother, and then grinned; "Enough." At her suggestion he shrugged carelessly, and then his eyes widened slightly at her interrogation. "A Ministry job? Come on, don't insult me. I think I'd go completely mad trapped in a cubicle filing reports about exploding quaffles or something." He gave her a mild look of amused reproach at her comment about him nit playing well with others. "Maybe it's others who don't want to play well with me. No, I think I'd like to travel. My parents were never big on vacation; families of homebodies, I suppose. And then... I'll see what comes my way." The look in his eyes was vaguely reminiscent of someone who steps onto the tracks knowing the train is hurtling in their direction, and eagerly anticipating it. "What about you? You know, aside from your murder by cushion business, which I'm sure will be thriving." I played the devil's advocate- I played into his hands! I played the fool; I played the victim... ”Oh you don't say?” She teased, tried to picture what a brooding Cyrus might look like but somehow, all she saw was a mop of blond hair, shadows like blinds to curtain his eyes, and a great white gleaming smile. No. That's certainly not brooding, is it? Unnerving maybe. ”Huh?” She almost hadn't heard him, with one ear tucked against her shoulder and the other hidden behind messy curls. ”Oh, I'm sure there's a potion for that,” she waved it off carelessly, using her favorite go-to excuse that she used for everything. ”Sweet for you to care though.” Vannah added, almost mocking but somewhat earnest. Hell, even she wasn't sure how she felt; the words sputter out of her mouth and she's lucky to have control even half the time. Sly eyes were glued to that grin; monsters hid behind his teeth and she wanted them to talk. To know more. 'Enough,' he said. Enough what? Enough curses? Enough blessings? Both? None? Was it just a ruse? She licked her lips as the conversation shifted. ”What?” she asked innocently, ”Don't you have a 'path all lined out for you' too? Engaged at sixteen, married at eighteen, join the ministry and pop out babies.” She shrugged again. ”Or does that only apply to firstborns? Me and my dirty, uneducated blood wouldn't know.” Waving her hands in a typical blasé, 'oh it's just a little light rain kind of day', she had to hold in her laughter throughout it all. Other students were still practicing, not that that mattered, but she was sure the professor wouldn't appreciate their gross lack of commitment to the lesson at hand. ”Maybe,” she agreed along with him. ”Or maybe you're just with the wrong crowd?” She stopped to pause and consider how boring his summer's must have been; his childhood. Vannah was hardly ever home, but when she was, it's family camping, daytrips to the cinema, weekend getaways at amusement parks, everything. Basically the equivalent of 'our marriage is failing apart but here's money and stuff to try and make up for it.' ”Me? Hmmm, well when I'm not on a smothering murder spree.... I'd be a thief.” She smiled. ”I've always wanted to rob Gringotts. But I think I'll start small, first.”

Cy rolled his eyes good-naturedly at the mention of the 'path'. "There's less pressure on the spare- besides, my brother's wife is already pregnant, so there's the first grandchild on the way. And technically," he added in amusement, "I've been engaged since last year, so scratch that one off the list." He wasn't terribly worried; he seriously doubted any man or woman alive on this earth was going to make Nike Lovette do something she clearly didn't want to do, so he doubted there would ever be a marriage. And while his parents could probably scrounge up another engagement for him at some point, there would most likely be a bit of a waiting period, given the way Anti's betrothal had ended. "I'm sure any spot of purity in my blood's been diluted by the sheer number of cousins shagging one another leading to my appearance on the family tree," he commented drolly. "And probably," he tacked on as she referenced him being with the wrong crowd. "I'm not good at attracting what's right for me." This might have been the only semi-serious thing he'd said in the last twenty minutes. "Rob Gringotts?" he echoed. "Ambitious, aren't we? We'll if you ever need backup... I'm just an owl away." I played the devil's advocate- I played into his hands! I played the fool; I played the victim... And if you bump into the devil; Tell him I understand. Rather the devil you know. Than the devil you don't.
