Mi Ren Ko stood up on trembling legs. It was nerves more than injury that made it difficult to stand. "I don't know if I can get back up the slope right now. Is there another way to get out?" She looked around but could see no easy path. Falling down was the easy part. Getting back up would be a little harder.
"There is a lower slope that way." Gesturing with a wing, Daenerys peered down from the top of incline at the two of them. She had landed only soon enough to hear Mi Ren Ko's last question. Mi Ren Ko was standing, which was a good thing. Roarke had sounded truly distressed when he called her down, but she could see no emergency. What was it that had happened here?
"Oooooh," moaned Mi Ren Ko, shivering and dropping her head in pain. Another contraction.
Daenerys stared at Mi Ren Ko. Could it be..? "Roarke, tell me what happened!" She flapped down the slope in a rush, landing not too far from her guardian and his mate.

Roarke moved to his mate to help steady her. His heavy tail swept out behind him to coil around one of Mi Ren Ko's hind legs gently. She was shaking. He looked her over but could still see no visible damage aside from some dirt and scrapes on her. His head lifted with a snap at the sound of Daenerys's voice. It was good to know there was a way out, it wouldn't be easy, and maybe not even possible, to try and push Mi Ren Ko up the way she came down.
He didn't even get the chance to suggest heading out of the gully before Mi Ren Ko's pained noises started again. "She, she fell!" Roarke said looking at one of Mi Ren Ko's sides before craning his head to see the other. "I don't know what else!"

Sensing the attention of both Daenerys and Roarke, Mi Ren Ko finally admitted what she had feared from the beginning. "I think that I'm in labor," she said, miserable and frightened. "It's too early. I think the fall... The fall did it somehow..." She remembered the birth of her first children. She had been surrounded by family and caretakers then. This was the opposite of that, hurt and isolated in a trench in the ground. Not only that, but... was that blood all over the khaleesi? Nauseated at the reminder of what she had seen and heard, Mi Ren Ko looked away.
"We need baskets." It was the first thing that came to mind. Baskets might have just enough magic in them to protect foals that were born prematurely. Sometimes humans left them in caches, but Dany couldn't remember seeing any for days now.
"I need to go back to the others, get them searching for baskets, and bring the healer here," said Dany, thoughts racing. "The healer won't be long. Until then..." Until then what? "Until then, wait for her." There wasn't enough time for discussion. Dany ran away from them far enough so as to not disturb them with her flight and then took off again, racing back for the herd.

Labor? Roarke's heart stopped. It was far too soon for that. Roarke looked at Mi Ren Ko trying to force the fear off of his face. It worked, but only somewhat. Mi Ren Ko didn't seem to want to look at him or the Khaleesi at the moment, but rather at nothing. That was okay. "Daenerys...baskets..." Roarke thought for the briefest of moments she was going to send him to look for them. Instead she told him to wait. Daenerys was going to fly for a healer leaving Roarke with no clues on what he should be doing.
Roarke grit his teeth as he braced himself for what was undoubtedly to come. The healer had been too slow for the usdia. She would be slow now too. There were no baskets around. They would have seen them. The humans had always been obvious with the placements. "Mi Ren Ko...let's lay down so you'll be more comfortable...help will come...just...wait..." He murmured before laying his cheek against her neck. This was not going to be a pleasant event.

Help did come, but help wasn't enough.
Daenerys sent out parties to search for baskets but couldn't send many. With a skinwalker prowling the area they couldn't afford to split up into smaller groups. It was probably irresponsible of her to even ask them to go out there, but the task was so urgent that she couldn't afford not to.
The healer was swift in rushing to Mi Ren Ko's side, but without baskets it was hopeless. Mi Ren Ko wept, and Daenerys wept as well when she returned with no baskets and no other miracle to save them. Darkness deepened, and death seemed to surround the little khalasar alone in the wilderness.

Mi Ren Ko was finally resting now, an exhausted unconsciousness that was a mercy after the happenings of that night. Daenerys wished that she could have joined her in sleep, but rest wouldn't come to her. Her eyes were dry, but her heart still wept and showed no signs of ceasing. After all this, there was still a skinwalker out there. They could be attacked at any moment and yet they couldn't leave while Mi Ren Ko was so exhausted. Dany stared glumly into the darkness, wondering if she was imagining the silhouette in the distance.
She wasn't. Daenerys' head whipped up and her mouth opened, ready to raise the alarm.The skinwalker had returned!
Only, it hadn't. It was something far worse.
It was her brother Viserys.....To be continued!
