Heading deeper into darkness, the pup shot frequent glances back towards the area with the portal. He had been here before, but it was creepier when he was the one who led the way.

What was it he was supposed to be looking for again? Jove tried to focus on that rather than what was in the deep darkness. He couldn't afford to get spooked now, not with his friends around. Ren knew his weaknesses, but his pride would suffer a drastic blow if the other three saw him run away.

Mathias somehow managed to flounder his way out of the water and onto dry land, the eel having been defeated, though he missed a lot of what Ren had actually done since he was too busy trying to learn how to swim.
The room he found himself in was dark, but for several feet in every direction, Mathias could see just fine, his eyes adjusting easily.
Oh hey, he was standing on a heart! Mathias bent down to investigate that further.
