Maria had been taking a sip from her ale as she listened to Desmond's tale, but when he got to the last, she choked on her drink and dissolved into a violent fit of coughing, though she managed not to coat the entire table in the ale she'd almost inhaled in her shock. Nuala looked on in mild alarm, ears cupped slightly forward as she monitored her chosen's breathing by sound.

When Maria'd recovered (blessed air...!) she looked up at him, brown eyes wide. "What... I mean..." She cleared her throat again and took a deep breath. "I don't want to pry into a painful subject, so by all means tell me if it's none of my business." She tapped the tip of one finger against the surface of the table as if pontificating as she continued. "But did you just say you've actually met a wolf in battle?"

She'd never heard of anyone fighting a wolf and living to tell the tale, just ravaged bodies and vast pawprints in the torn and bloodied earth.

He glanced askance at her as she choked, but she had herself in control fairly swiftly. At her question however, he made a humming noise and hide his face behind his mug for a moment. When he set the drink down, he laced his fingers together on the tabletop to keep her from seeing them shake.

"Yes, I have. Several of them. I...I was part of the initial contingent force that..." He swallowed thickly, his gaze going distant as he remembered. "We were the first ones to engage them. By the time we reached the boundary of the Wood, four villages had already been decimated."

Remembering was painful. For the longest time, his own subconscious had locked away the entire fight to keep him from falling into a very deep, debilitating shock. He'd never rightly thought about how traumatizing feeling one's own mortality so succinctly could be. Liadain turned her gaze to her chosen, her ears forward. The doe didn't like him remembering such things.

With a sigh, he continued his story, because if he stopped now, he wouldn't ever start again, which wasn't healthy in its own right. "We tried evacuating the villagers, but the Wolves came out of the trees before we could even start. Massive beasts... They were like a tied of death surging into the village, their howls ripping the breath from your lungs. We...we didn't stand a chance," he said, looking down at his hands. "We were cut down like paper dolls, so easily torn apart and discarded. Guns were...useless against them. Swords barely cut them, and never enough to stop them. Myself, Danson, Crawford, and Shaw...we all stood between the monsters and the fleeing villagers. Our brothers lay dead all around, some running towards us to join the last stand. It only took one Wolf to finish us...the rest went around without a thought, after the villagers."

He grew quiet as memories assaulted him. That one wolf had been huge, bigger than the rest, and black as pitch. It had attacked him first and if Shaw hadn't shoved him, Desmond would have lost his head instead of just his eye. But the result had been nearly the same; instead, Des had lost the last people he had cared about while he had been bleeding and unconscious, unable to help them as their dead bodies piled on top of his. Even in death, they had done their duties to protect the injured.

For a long time he'd wished that he had joined them in death.

Liadain let out an explosive snort and rose to her feet all in a rush, her head snapping forward as she bit him soundly on the shoulder.

Maria had been staring as he told his tale, her eyes filling with tears as she mentally wrote James into his tale in the role of one of Desmond's friends- because surely his last moments had been nearly identical, a welter of terror, blood, and despair.

She'd been reaching out to rest a hand on his, to offer comfort, perhaps to tell him about James, something- when the Gray Lady clattered to her feet on the wood floor and lunged.

Nuala had been listening intently to her chosen, reading the emotions that rolled off of her throughout Desmond's story, but at the other guardian's sudden movement and Maria's equally sudden surprise, the white doe was on her feet as well.

"Ai! What are you doing?" Maria barked at Liadain as she, too, began to scramble to her feet, unsure what on earth would provoke a guardian into attacking her own chosen, and even less sure what in blazes to do about it.

The gray doe turned her furious stare on the woman dressed as a man and narrowed her turquoise eyes. They were filled with anger and though Desmond grimaced and put a hand to what was surely an already darkening bruise, he waved Mark and Nuala back. Liadain stomped a single hoof into the wooden floor hard enough to leave a small dent, then she was threading her way through the tables, pushing her way through the door as a hapless man tried to enter.

Sighing, Desmond downed the rest of his mug. He pulled his coat and shirt back enough to try glancing at the wound, but it was in too awkward of a spot. Mark would see it as an ugly purple and red darkening of the skin, very similar to a nasty horse bite.

"Please, Mark," he said, putting emphasis on the name as he glanced at those that had turned to watch the commotion. "Sit. It's fine." He gave a humorless laugh. "She didn't much approve of my train of thought, my Gray Lady..."

As she did as she was bade, Maria exhaled a shaky breath and ran a hand over her face. She was mildly surprised when it came away wet. Well, it had been a bad story and thinking about James in any detail tended to do that to her. She wanted badly to offer Desmond some sort of tactile comfort, but didn't dare, not now that everyone was staring.

With a snort and a reassuring flick of her ears, Nuala acted in proxy. The white doe snuffled Desmond's shoulder, examining the wound via scent and without touching the no-doubt tender flesh. Satisfied that it didn't need immediate attention, she hooked her chin over his other shoulder with a whoofle of warm breath, the way she'd learned to hug her mistress as a fawn when she was in a bad place.

Maria chuckled softly at that with a slightly pained smile. "That's my girl. Sure you're alright, Desmond? I'm sorry to bring up something so painful. That..." she cleared her throat, looking down at her mug. "That sounds a great deal like what happened to my fiancee." The others in the tavern would assume a woman in the role of the villagers if they even gave enough of a damn to listen at all, but she knew Desmond would make the correct leap.

Desmond appreciated the blind doe's care and gently scratched her cheek as she 'hugged' him. He reached out for Liadain, but all he got in return was silence. Either she was too far away, or she had blocked him entirely. "I'm alright. Liadain, well...She has very lofty standards she holds me to." Mark would find this out to its full extent if she ever saw Liadain and Desmond train.

When the woman brought up her fiance, his expression grew pained and he wanted very badly to hold his hand out to her. But, he dare not. Instead he rubbed Nuala's neck and whispered in her ear, "Go give your lady a hug for me, sweet doe, since I cannot."

"Seems we share a common pain, although..." and he touched his cheek, just below the scar, "losing an eye is nothing compared to losing the one you love."

As if sensing how quickly and thoroughly the conversation had turned to such sadness, Vexation did her best to wiggle into Mark's lap, the usually exhuberent fox now a little more somber, her surprisingly soft tongue licking at the woman's hands.

Maria looked down in surprise at the sudden bundle of wiggly fur in her lap and gathered her up for a cuddle as Nuala licked the side of Desmond's face in an affectionate farewell and walked in her usual stately manner over to deliver the hug as requested.

"I don't put much stock in weighing suffering," she told Desmond with a slight smile though it didn't light her eyes. "We've both been hurt, and neither of us deserved the pain." Her smile warmed slightly as Nuala's head hooked over her shoulder in a deer-hug and she leaned her head over against the doe's companionably as she continued to pet Vex, taking comfort in the fox's warm fur. "But I for one intend to pay our tormenters back with interest."

Not liking the dour turn the conversation had taken, she ran her hand over Vex's ears and tried to get her emotions under control. She'd no idea what James would think to see her now, far from home and hearth, dressed as a man and bruised and a bit dirty from a day's hard work in the fields and plotting vengeance and bloodshed. She hoped he'd be proud, but something in her suspected he'd actually be sad.

Taking a deep breath, she looked down at the fox and found a better smile, then wrinkled her nose and touched the tip of it to the fox's black, damp nose playfully.

Joy was a forgiving thing, she'd found, and could be forced if you were sufficiently stubborn about it.

"Well, my friend," she said, looking back up to Desmond with a wry smile, "by the time you've finished your ale I'd expect my apartment will be safe enough to visit. I need to pack a few things before I hit the road, and I wouldn't object to company. I can make sure your doe hasn't broken your collarbone while we're there if you like," she added with a smirk.

He flexed his shoulder, wincing at the stretching of tender skin, though he got full range of movement. "Liadain may disapprove of something enough to bite or kick me, but she'll never disable me. Because then I can't fight." Giving Mark a rye grin, Desmond left money on the table and stood, calling Vex to his side.

"I'll walk you to your place, but I'm afraid I'll have to leave after that, find out where she went." And try to appease her with some strawberries, the doe's favorite treat. Something told him it wouldn't do much good and that he would get quite the thrashing later in the evening when they were set to spar at the Swan together. Gesturing for her to lead, he followed her out the door.

"Please don't let Liadain's outburst sour your opinion of her," he added quietly once they'd reached the street. It was hard to explain the relationship he had with his guardian. She was disapproving of nearly everything, she hated weakness, and had a fighting spirit that could rival even Soibhan's. But in her own way, she also cared deeply for her chosen; she wanted him to move past his disability, rise above his social inadequacy, and to be the strong, commanding soldier she had sensed he'd been before he lost his eye.

Des has had very subtle character progression since I've started playing him. Man, even I didn't like him when I first started playing him xD

Ashtiel Arykosa
I believe it. I like him now, though! Seems like there was a good guy under all the rough edges. Poor bby.

She nodded, putting a companionable hand on his good shoulder with a warm smile. "I won't. She's what you need her to be, the way Nuala is what I need." She shrugged affably. "Thinking badly of her for that wouldn't be fair. Still, if you ever need to actually talk, you know how to find me."

The streets were nearly empty now here at the close of the day, and Maria found herself smiling slightly to think that, despite the human stupidity that had brought about the situation and painful topics notwithstanding, she'd rather enjoyed just getting to share good food and good conversation with someone. She glanced back once to see the pale shadow of Nuala calmly pacing along behind her, the doe following her unerringly by scent and sound. The blind doe had been her sole companion for a long time now, and perhaps... perhaps it was time to come back to the world properly, just a little bit.

"The idiot butcher aside, this has been a lovely evening," she commented absently into the cool night.

"Mm, yes it has. I haven't taken much time lately to have companionable meals, except with Soi." He gazed around, finding that many folk had gone home. The streets here were mostly clear of snow, with only a few spots still lingering. An ever present, dirty slush persisted however, and would do so until full spring swept it away. With the air cool but lacking any real bite, he would even go so far as to call it a beautiful evening.

He tentatively reached out for his guardian again, this time getting a pinprick of awareness. She was there, but still forcefully ignoring him. Feeling a little better about his ability to detect her now, he relaxed, following beside Mark with a new ease now.

"How often do instances such as with our butcher friend happen to you? If you don't mind me asking."

She shrugged. "If you mean people getting their blood up and wanting a fight, that happens every now and again. If you mean recognizing me, that doesn't happen often. I don't usually converse with people in town as Mark, I go straight home from work and change before I run any errands I might need to as myself."

With a sigh and a wry grin, she rubbed the back of her neck. "It's definitely not a perfect system with a giant white deer following me around. I suppose someone was bound to put it together eventually, but it's worked out so far."

Nuala nudged her shoulder with a playful snort at the 'giant white deer' comment, making Maria laugh softly.

Desmond laughed. "Ah, yes. I can't imagine your pretty girl contributes to any kind of anonymity. I think most Chosen have that problem, actually." While he might not ever be recognized for his smithwork, he damn well got recognized for his somewhat intimidating guardian. He couldn't image how others with more flashy does and bucks could keep any kind of anonymity at all.

"Nuala aside, I think you have a good system. There's not much else you could do, to be honest. Unless you wanted to dress as nothing but a man whenever you are out of your home. Soibhan seems to have less issue because she's a foreigner, though she still gets unsavory sorts paying the wrong kind of attention to her."

He grinned. "She will teach you all you need to know on how to deal with that lot, however. Though," and he quickly held his hands up, "don't take that as an insult. You've proven your capabilities when dealing with louts."

Maria chuckled at that, her smile wide and amused. "I should think so! I really am looking forward to meeting this Soi, though. She sounds fascinating. And knowing another's methods just makes your own more versatile."

She stopped at the bottom of a set of narrow, rather rickety stairs which led up to her apartment. "And here we are." She turned to him with another smile. "Well, you've been patient and there's noone to overhear. I'm Maria," she said with an impudent grin, sticking her hand out to shake. "Maria Peregrine. It's a pleasure to meet you."

He couldn't help but match her grin; it was just that infectious. Taking her hand, he shook it as he would a man's, because he felt that she would appreciate it. But then he lifted her hand just enough to place a gentle kiss on her knuckles, something he would do for any lady he respected.

"You've made this evening a pleasure, Maria Peregrine." Then he gave a slight bow to Nuala. "You as well, lady doe. I will send Vex when our little group gathers for a team exercise." With that he stepped back, snapping his fingers to get the fox's attention. Vex twined about Maria's legs like a cat before darting over to Nuala for a touch of noses. Then she pranced over to her master and the two of them turned back for home.

Maria bade him farewell and watched him go with a wry smile, running her hand over Nuala's ears.

It had been an interesting day, and she found she was quite looking forward to what tomorrow would bring, even if tonight she'd be sleeping under the stars. Her doe nudged her encouragingly, and she chuckled as she turned to go and gather her few belongings and make her escape.
