A Gift from the wanidatsi

As morning dawns at the end of the Moon Ceremony, before the clans can disperse once again, the pride is called together for an announcement.

Observant members of the pride have noticed that there have been a strange number of birds in the vicinity of the Stargrove and Festival this year. Some, in fact, may have noticed the accumulation beginning some time before the festival. Those who haven't noticed are quickly made aware of it as Skan Kanati stands before them all with six birds arranged at his sides, and all six are tattooed like Ela'wadiyi themselves. Any curious speculation it sparks is quickly silenced by the following announcement:

Long ago, the clans were not separated only in name but each possessed a skill or demonstrated a talent that distinguished them from the rest. With the help of Tawa'di, the past is being recalled and the clans will be pushed to return to their former glory. The six birds sitting around Skan are gifts for the clans, one for each alu'nadi. They have each been taught the ways of the pride, and they have each accepted a place with the clan of their preference. They are the first of a new generation of birds to be trained by the Bird Clan.

Each clan mother will be partnered to a bird and tasked with rediscovering and developing a skill their clan once held in high regard and used to distinguish themselves from the others. Each bird knows the trait assigned to their clan and has volunteered to move to their assigned clan with that knowledge. Their role depends, of course, on their personalities: Some may prefer to be guides, others assistants and some may even prefer only to be companions. All, however, are messengers and are expected to be in direct contact with the wanidatsi frequently until the next Sky Festival.

OOCly, these birds are gifts to the Clan Leaders. In all but three cases, this means they are easily assigned to their clan's alu'nadi as is expected ICly. For the Earth and Sky Clans, their assigned birds will remain NPCs ICly associated with the clan's alu'nadi but controlled by Safaia and/or Ecavi as necessary until new Clan Leaders can be assigned. For the Wolf Clan, IC arrangements will be worked out privately. Each bird above is in alphabetical order by clan and has the alu'nadi's name in the URL.

The Clans' traits are as follows:

  • Bird Clan: Known for ... Raising and training birds to act as messengers within the pride.
  • Earth Clan: Known for ... A strong spiritual connection to the earth and the pridal lands.
  • Mantis Clan: Known for ... Strength and skill in battle.
  • Shadow Clan: Known for ... Stealth and skill in hunting.
  • Sky Clan: Known for ... Great memory and knowledge, especially of pride history.
  • Wolf Clan: Known for ... Crafting the items worn by all pride members.

This information, along with lists of notable members of each clan, can now be found in the Clans & Members thread.

On a more serious note..

Throughout the festival, Skan Kanati and Tawa'di have been observing each of the clans and investigating how they have been managing and presenting themselves. Only two clans have come out of the review with commendations:

The Bird and Shadow Clans both have exemplary alu'nadis and nvwatis who are active and involved in their clans' well-being. Each of these clans also had excellent participation rates in the Sky Ceremony and the festival as a whole.

All four remaining clans, however, are in trouble. They will be visited by the wanidatsi and they will be expected to correct any issues that he finds before it is time for the clans to meet again for next year's Sky Festival.

The Mantis Clan lacks a nvwati, though they are, in part, saved by the fact that they demonstrated sufficient enthusiasm and participation in the festival, owing primarily to their impressive contributions to the Sky Ceremony. Additionally, the fact that this clan is considerably newer than the others affords them far more leniency.

The Wolf Clan lacks a nvwati, and though they technically have one in training, the fact that they have needed one since the pride came back together and are only now working towards correcting it is a problem. However, this clan is also helped by moderate participation in the festival.

The Earth Clan has both an alu'nadi and nvwati and yet their presence in the festivities has been underwhelming. Their participation in the Sky Ceremony and the festival overall has been lacking and they have not made a good impression on the wanidatsi. Even being the home clan of this year's Sky Champion is not enough to redeem them.

The Sky Clan has no nvwati, and has been missing one as long as the Wolf Clan. There have never been any signs of taking steps to correct this, though. Their participation in the Sky Festival is especially lacking, most evident in the fact that for two years in a row their only representative in the Sky Ceremony has been the same relatively new member and former rogue, O'ros. This is the clan in the most pressing trouble.

Important Notes: These assessments of the four troubled clans are not being announced to the entire pride ICly, though the Bird and Shadow Clans are being commended publicly. The information provided about the other clans and why they are in trouble may be used by outside clans as the basis for gossip since most of it is easily observable. But this information will be made especially clear to each clan's alu'nadi during the wanidatsi's visit.

ICly and OOCly, the primary goal is to get each clan an alu'nadi and nvwati. The Mantis and Wolf Clan owners are already aware of this and the trouble their clans are in, though they have the IC benefit of having members who participated in the festival.

The Earth and Sky Clans, however, no longer have owners. The fact that these clans have had such poor participation in the festivals is being taken advantage of to provide us with a better in-character excuse to remedy this (especially in the case of the Earth Clan as they technically have both leadership roles filled). We will be reassigning these clans as we see fit, though it would be reasonable to assume at least one will be contested off.

Back on the topic of gossip... all clans are welcome to assume that the bird given to their alu'nadi is actually a spy for the wanidatsi. There is actually no reason to believe otherwise. How their players let this affect the bird itself and their alu'nadi is entirely up to them, though.

Extra - Wolf Clan Miniplot

Though Skan and Tawa'di have done their best to assess each of the clans entirely, something very serious has gone entirely unnoticed: The Wolf Clan's alu'nadi is missing.

Only days before the festival, Tsi'hilu Waya went on a hunt and never returned. In the excitement of migrating to and preparing for the Sky Festival, her absence went almost entirely unnoticed-- except by much of her family. Not wanting to worry the clan or disrupt the festival, those who knew agreed to keep this a secret until after the clans parted ways once more after the festival. A small search party was sent looking for her, which only returned at the tail-end of the festival and with no luck in finding their missing clan mother.

For the duration of the festival, those who knew (particularly Ukahada Waya, the future nvwati and Tsi'hilu's great grandson) were charged with acting natural and reassuring/lying to anybody who might notice-- but even under the scrutiny of the wanidatsi (who would not be expecting something of this nature), their secret was safe.

But now the clan is going home with a bird meant for the alu'nadi and the promise of a visit from the wanidatsi to complete their assessment at any time.

OOC

Anybody with members of the Waya family who would definitely have noticed their missing mother/grandmother/great-grandmother should contact Ecavi immediately to work out details. For now, the only definite conspirators are Ukahada Waya (who helped keep things quiet during the festival), Kawani Waya, and Sedi Waya (who both missed the entire festival in favor of trying to track down any sign of the missing alu'nadi).

As of right now, the clan's only leadership is Ukahada Waya, the nvwati-in-training.

This is too big of a deal to just handle quickly and quietly, expect a clan ORP and possible other things. There is still plenty to be figured out.
