Darren pretty much just wanted to curl up into as small of a ball as he could and die right then and there. His mother was being completely unreasonable but he didn't want to have Hafwen think he wasn't interested in making this a long term relationship on the off chance he actually HAD a chance at making it into one.

So he bit his tongue and nodded to Hafwen at her first comment and gave her hand an apologetic squeeze.

It wasn't much longer until Lilly parked the car in the parking lot of a small diner. It had a very 1950s Americana feel to it. It honestly could have been a prop from some old movie or T.V. show. Darren slowly, reluctantly removed his fingers from Hafwen's hand and opened the door, sliding out as he moved around the back of the car to meet Hafwen when she got out.

Lilly simply slid out of her seat and before looking at the other two. "Hope you're hungry, they don't mess around with portions here."

Hafwen was thankful really that Lilly seemed to have decided to stop there and spare the both of them from any further embarrassment for the rest of the journey, coming close to nodding off a few times herself en route to their intended destination.

Hopping out of the car the moment it was pulled into the parking lot, curiosity lit up her gaze as she took in the decor of the diner, honestly surprised that such a place still existed in Destiny City. Darren hadn't seemed like the type to be into vintage but then again she was just starting to really get to know him so she wouldn't know better.

"Am not exactly famished but I suppose I could work up an appetite so as to not waste the food." She beamed at them both, her gaze lingering a little longer on Darren till she was sure that he was indeed capable of standing and walking around on his own without requiring any assistance.

"I can eat," Darren said quietly, smiling a little at Hafwen and waiting for his mother to walk on ahead of them so he could mouth a "sorry about my mom" to Hafwen before turning and walking next to her toward the diner.

"The food's really good, but you don't have to stuff yourself on my account if you're not crazy hungry." Darren said to her, keeping his voice low. "I think mom is just trying to make up for things. She doesn't like to come here."

Not since... he shook his head, banishing those memories away.

Hafwen walked beside Darren, shrugging off his mouthed apology with a small smile on her face. Although it was true that Lilly's teasing might have made things kind of awkward between the both of them, she supposed that it could have been worse had she turned out to be an overprotective maternal figure taking it upon herself to give them both an earful with regards to the incident that had started this all in the first place.

"I know. Is there anything specific that you'll recommend? I reckon that I may as well try something since we've already come all the way out here and the food's supposed to be really good as you've said." She perked up a little at the mention of the diner serving up really good food, not one to pass up on the opportunity to try out something new. Her lack of an appetite was likely a temporary phase and the fact that the boy whom she had unintentionally caused grievous injury to appeared mostly alright and was able to hold a decent conversation with her at the moment cheered her up a bit.

"She doesn't..?" She was genuinely surprised by what Darren had brought up since Lilly hadn't seemed adverse to coming here at all, a questioning tone in her voice though she left it just at that to avoid prying further lest it was deemed unwelcomed on her part.

"No, I don't really come here that often. It was actually Darren's father's favorite place to eat, so..." Lilly said with a sad little smile and a weak shrug. "Darren is of course, right, I'm trying to make up for thing by coming here."

That wasn't the only reason. Lilly couldn't resist playing matchmaker. Not with her only son. Or her daughters either - but they weren't here to tease. Instead she would have to focus on Darren and the girl she hoped would end up being his girlfriend. She liked Hafwen already.

"See, I told you," Darren said with a weak nod. "But that's okay - I'll take what I can get." He gave Hafwen a smile then. "As far as the food - their burgers are great. They're a bit big but I never finish mine in one go - I always end up taking them home. The fries are amazing too. But if you're not a fan of beef - their chicken is good too. It's really hard to go wrong with anything here."

He was about to say more, but they had reached the doors of the diner. Lilly was about to open them but Darren wincing all the while, forced himself ahead of her and pulled open the door for both girls. "Go ahead and sit at the booth by the window in the back - it's always empty."

It really did look like they'd pulled the diner straight out of the 50's. If it had been more retro, you'd of assumed it was a sound stage for a remake of Grease. True to Darren's words though, a booth in the back was completely empty.

"Darren, you didn't have to force yourself, I can open the door." Lilly said, frowning a bit.

"It's fine Mom, really - what kind of gentleman doesn't hold the door for the two most beautiful women he knows?"

Lilly just rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Well, Hafwen, I guess we better snag that booth before it gets taken, since Darren is being stubborn."

She moved passed him then, heading toward the booth to take it, waving at the hostess and waitress as she went. The place didn't seem super busy. The podium in the front actually had a sign that said. "Seat Yourself."

"I see..." There wasn't much for Hafwen to add to the conversation really so she settled for a go between as a space filler that also acknowledged it at the same time. It was obvious that Darren's father still meant a lot to both Lilly and Darren - the both of them had simply opted for polar opposite methods of honouring his memory in this instance. It made her wonder briefly if it was the same for Hywel with her own mother and part of the reason why their relationship had become strained over the years. Well, it didn't matter anyway. It wasn't as if it was one of those grown up issues that she could empathize with or cared to attempt even.

Returning Darren's smile with one of her own, she nodded a few times. "Not in the mood for something heavy like beef this evening so I guess I'll go for the chicken instead." Not at all seeing any point in chastising him further for pushing himself to do something nice for her and Lilly, she held her tongue save for thanking him for the gentlemanly act then slipped through the door to take the seat opposite Lilly in the booth.

"Seems like a pretty cozy place..."

"It is, that's part of its appeal," Lilly said with a soft smile to Hafwen as Darren came to join them. "Ah, our knight-in-shining armor has arrived." She didn't seem to mind when he sat next to Hafwen, if anything, she seemed to approve.

"I'm sure Darren will order his usual burger, so why don't you look at the menu Hafwen? Their chicken is rather good as well." She said with a smile.

Darren was trying his level best to not lay his head in the table or cradle it with his hands. All he wanted to do was take a nap now. He blinked a few times, and waved down the waitress to get their drink orders in.

It didn't surprise Hafwen really when Darren opted to sit next to her instead of Lilly the moment he came over to join them both. She didn't even need to glance Lilly's way to know that she fully approved of the chemistry between them and what that possibly implied in their future in the long run. To think that they've already gone through all these even before they had even gone on their first date.

Picking up the menu at Lilly's cue, she flipped absentmindedly through the pages to detract her mind from that particular train of thought until she came to the pages that contained the description and pictures of the chicken dishes offered by the diner. It didn't take her long to decide on what she wanted and she pointed it out for the waitress when she came over to take down their orders. "I'll go for the grilled chicken fillet with chips and a glass of iced tea please."

Done with the menu, she set it aside and shifted her attention back to Darren, a small frown starting to form when she noticed that he seemed about ready to nod off anytime now. "You alright..? It's not beddy time yet sleepyhead." She decided to remind him with a gentle prod to his side.

"Hmmm? I'm okay, promise," Darren said, responding to her poke before looking up at the waitress. "Hey, Jenny, the usual." Then he leaned slightly into Hafwen, not enough to be obnoxious, but enough for her to feel the shift in his weight. If she mentioned it he'd move - but he felt more awake when he was in contact with her.

Lilly smiled at them then turned her attention to the waitress, ordering just a salad and some tea. The Waitress took down the order, smiled at the three of them and then headed off to get them their drinks, putting the ticket in behind the bar.

"Getting a little caffeine in him will help him perk up a bit I'm sure," Lilly said. "I'm sure its not his preferred method of stimulation but it'll have to do."

Darren's face immediately colored and he wished he could crawl under the table and die.

"You'd better be. If you feel funny or cough up any of your food later, you're going straight back to the hospital like it or not." Hafwen informed Darren flatly then decided to leave him be, not at all minding his leaning into her. If anything, it seemed to help reassure her that he was alright without having to turn to check on him so she left it at that.

Not his preferred method of stimulation. What did she mean by... oh.

She must have been a little out of it for the comment that Lilly sent their way went right over her head initially and she had doubled up to replay it in her mind before she finally caught onto what the older woman was trying to get at at the expense of her poor injured son. Hafwen couldn't help it really, grinning from ear to ear as she barely managed to resist bursting out laughing. "Really now? So what's his preferred method of stimulation then?" She really had to pose the question in public even if it was ultimately going to be at poor Darren's expense.

"Well if I wasn't here he'd probably want to make out," Lilly said as she smirked, watching as her son continued to pale and slowly die inwardly. She was trying really hard not to laugh at his expense - but this was her own little revenge for him pushing himself too hard. That and she was shameless, completely and utterly shameless.

"But alas, you are burdened with my presence so he must languish with only his imagination," she said, bringing a hand up to dramatically pose as if she were pining away, her wrist resting on her forehead for a moment before she stopped and side-eyed her son. "Sorry, Darren, but you're too easy to tease."

Darren was glad that the drinks arrived and he was able to focus on something other than wanting to jump across the table and strangle his mother. He could see her flair for the dramatic had not faded away completely. He was quiet for a little before he nodded.

"This is true, but a proper gentleman must always be willing to take a hit from a lady," he said watching his mother over the top of his cup. "Or at least that's what April says."

He was rewarded with his mother sobering a bit, sitting up a little and taking a sip of her tea. "I'm sorry, Darren, I was getting a little ahead of myself." She made a face then at him.

"It's okay," Darren said, before turning and smiling weakly at Hafwen. "April's my step-mom." He added. "She and I... don't always get along. Though to be fair - I should say my mom's new significant other as she never officially adopted me. So barring what rights my mother allows her, she's not really in charge of me any."

"Darren," Lilly said, her voice sounding a bit strained. "I'm pretty sure Hafwen doesn't want to be bothered with the ins-and-outs of our home life."

"Right, sorry," Darren apologized to both women before giving Hafwen a little space to sip his at his drink. He kept his eyes on the table now - cowed if nothing else.

"Really? Even with his current condition and on the first date?" Hafwen was probably taking this a little too far with the mock look of surprise and horror in response to her most recent 'discovery' of Darren courtesy of Lilly. It was kind of hard to believe that the older woman was his mother really given the relation dynamic she was observing between the both of them. She thought that most parents would be more dictatorial like what she had seen with some of her classmates from Crystal.

"Guess we got a little carried away back there. Sorry..." She did start to feel a little guilty when Darren spoke next, chipping in her own apology as well before reaching for her glass. Boy were things starting to turn a little awkward with the silence that hung in the air between them all now. "It's okie. I personally don't mind really..." She offered tentatively in the hope of breaking the silence and possibly help change up the mood some.

"It's okay, I went a little too far too," Darren said quietly, looking up at both of the women at the table and smiling weakly. "Sorry."

"It's okay," Lilly said with a nod, shaking her head. "Though now I have to ask how school is going."

Darren groaned and lowered his head back to the table, grumbling softly under his breath. "Fiiiine."

Lilly crossed her arms under her chest and watched her son. "That's not what the letter I got yesterday said."

A letter from the school? Hafwen quickly set her glass down, her curiosity piqued when Lilly started to question Darren about school and how his response wasn't quite adding up with the content of a letter she had received. Well, Lilly didn't quite mention where the letter had come from really. It was purely an assumption she had made on her part since it apparently was linked to something that had happened in school based on what she could gather from the conversation by far.

"Um... did something happen at school?" It probably wasn't her place to pose such a question given her current position as a potential girlfriend material but she couldn't help being concerned anyway. Darren might not occur to her as a model student but he certainly didn't seem like the type to stir up trouble either.

"They were teasing Rosy, so I took care of it," Darren said, his voice quiet. "It's not like I hurt them or anything..."

"Darren, even if they were that doesn't mean you need to threaten them," Lilly sighed, shaking her head slowly. "I know you want to protect your sister, but..."

"I know, I know..." Darren groaned, turning to look at Hafwen as he smiled weakly."Rosy is my younger sister, I don't like it when people tease her."
