Ashtiel Arykosa

His grin was brief, but it did nearly warm his eyes this time. "Oui, but if you spoil him much more he'll decide he's through with the likes of me," he joked with a soft laugh, sitting obediently where she'd indicated. "You'll never be rid of him."

The dog submitted his vote by scrambling up from where he'd been napping (having thoroughly sniffed about the place once he'd caught the scent of fox while the humans were doing whatever it was humans did) and sitting right at her feet, ears perked most attentively and his tail thumping a fast, shallow tattoo against the floor.

Remi rubbed the back of his neck, contemplating the other topic. It was far from a comfortable subject, and one he normally shied from with the sort of passion most reserved for religious observances. But here with the circle of candlelight keeping the shadows at bay, he was almost willing to discuss it. Perhaps there had been something in that wine.

As he recalled the tale, allowing himself to think of it for the first time in years, his face fell into grim lines and he felt the pricking of tears at his eyes. Shaking his head he ran a hand over his face. "Non, I cannot. Not tonight. Perhaps some other time."

He looked back up at her with an attempt at his usual jaunty grin, apology in his eyes. "I feel I'm being a poor guest. Not very entertaining... Maybe you could tell me how you came by that demon in bird form?"

Rubbing the dog's ears, she gave him the bone with a smile, filing the hitch of his master's breath away for later. She returned to him, watching him from under half-lidded eyes. When he admitted that he could not share, she saw an old terror in his gaze and did not push him any further. At his request, she began to tell her own tale as she lifted his torn and bloodied shirt out of her way.

"Tha' demon bird is wha's known as a kingshawk, a bird reserved fer the nobility. I was ridin' through a small stand o' woods south o' Palisade when I came upon him, screechin' an' hissin' like a damn kettle." She worked competently as she spoke, wiping the blood away from the wound with a soft cloth. Dressing wounds had been one of the first things her father Belenos had taught her, had taught all of his warriors. Sometimes even the dressing of a minor wound was the matter of life and death, as infection could kill from the smallest cut.

"There musta been a storm the night afore. Either his former owner was a fool an' sent him out in it, or the silly git go' free himself." At that, the hawk clacked his beak together sharply and almost looked as if he were glaring at the woman. She only smiled at him and unwrapped a long roll of thin, white cloth. As she began to wrap it around his torso with gentle fingers, she continued, "I found his royalty stuck up a tall arse tree, sproutin' branches out his wings. He'd broken 'em both an' couldna get down."

She made sure the binding was tight, to keep the edges of the wound close to each other, but not so tight that he would have any more difficulty moving than was necessary. The man was well built and she smiled appreciatively as she worked, a small but loud part of her wanting to take his shirt off entirely.

Bad Soi, no molestin' the injured.

Remi tolerated the necessary discomfort of binding his wound without complaint. It would be another scar for the collection, but he wasn't concerned. Under Soi's competent hands, listening to the sound of her voice and that of Beau happily demolishing the bone he'd been given, the mercenary began to relax once more. Bit by bit, the tension drained from his shoulders (as much as it ever did), and his smile began to reappear.

He leaned forward a touch to help her as she finished tying the bandages. She could probably feel the latticework of scars that crisscrossed his back; another relic of his darkest days. But for once he wasn't thinking about that, just his happy dog and pleasant companionship.

"I imagine getting him down was a small adventure," he said with a chuckle. "Perhaps his temperament will improve once his wings are healed?" He glanced back down at the bird, his eyes narrowing. "Though I doubt it."

She laughed and it was a warm sound, like whiskey made into noise. "Prolly no! He's a surly bugger an' I doona see tha' changin'." Her fingers finished tying the wraps, and though she wasn't seeking them out, she felt the scars on his back and wondered if they had anything to do with his fears. Before she let her touch turn less innocent, the gaelic woman stepped back and proclaimed her task finished.

"The only thing tha' bird actually likes is a wee fox named Vexation."

She began gathering up the supplies and returning them to the little box. The sound of the wind outside became a constant thing, snowflakes battering the windows in earnest. There would be no sending him off tonight. Besides, there was no where to send him to, and she found that she much enjoyed him company. There was just something about fighting back to back and having to fall into an immediate form of trust, that the person behind you would keep you safe, that lent itself to fast friendships.

"Now. We're all fixed up an' a wee less bloody. Care fer a drink? Or would ye like me te get the spare bedroll an' blankets out?"

"If you're offering, mon ami, I'd love a drink," he said with a grin. "So the hawk is friends with a fox? I've never heard of such a thing. He is a handsome bird, though, for all his foul temper." He leaned his chin on his hand, subtly observing the surly hawk out of the corner of his eye so as not to upset the thing unduly; beasts generally took a direct stare as some form of insult, and he wasn't in the mood for another fight.

When Soi got up and started puttering around, Beau hopped up and followed her. The dog was till noshing on his bone with a clattering of teeth and a friendly wag of his tail as he shadowed her through her home. Seeing this, Remi burst out laughing, the first full, rich laugh she'd heard from the man. "Oh, you traitor. Still, I suppose I should've realized that the loyalty of a mercenary's dog could be bought."

On realizing his master was addressing him, though, Beau veered off and came bounding across the small flat, still chomping on the bone with his head held high as if to show off his prize. "Yes, it is a very nice bone, and our hostess is most kind to have given it to you," Remi told him with a chuckle, reaching out to rumple the delighted pup's ears.

"I don't think Beau and I have had such a good day in awhile. Thank you, Soibhan."

"Less bought an' more borrowed fer a short time. I've missed havin' dogs around. Got a bunch o' big wolf hounds back home." Her tone had grown wistful; it wasn't often she felt homesick, but for some reason, she felt it keenly now as she took down two short glasses and an unlabeled bottle of rich, amber liquid. "Good hunters they are, but better pillows an' bed warmers."

She set the glasses on the table with a sharp tap and poured without preamble. "As fer the fox an' the fool hawk, aye. Weirdest pair I've ever seen. When the two o' them go at it, the racket they make could wake the dead." Though she'd set the cups on the table, she took hers over to one of two large, comfortable looking wing chairs beside a cold fireplace and began stoking the fire to combat the chill pervading the air. "An'! Let me ask ye this, so I have some backup. Isn't Vexation an awful name fer somethin' as cute as a fox?"

He chuckled again as he stood from the table and came to join her by the fire, flopping down into the other chair with a boneless sort of grace. "That sounds like I'm stepping into a quarrel, that does, and I'd be wise to hold my counsel." He took a sip from the glass with a small wince for the burn, and sighed happily as he felt the warmth of it join with the fading blur of the wine in his blood.

"As for the dogs, Beau's just the same. An excellent guardian, but he's kept me from dying of the cold on more than one long march, so I know what you mean." The dog, somewhat beside himself with two people to love on him instead of just the one, was pacing back and forth between Soi and Remi, trying to do the doggy math on how to sit close enough to both of them that he could be petted by two people at once. It was an especially difficult problem since he was still distracted by the bone he refused to relinquish.

"Is the fox as cute as you say? Or is he sweet to you and a terror to his keeper? That might explain the name." Remi decided to help Beau, nudging the dog's hindquarters around in a circle with his foot so that he could scratch the dog atop his hips while Beau rested his chin on Soi's knee.

Visibly brightening, Soibhan set the fire poker aside and all but collapsed into the chair, snuggling down into it like a hen into her nest. "She's adorable. A wee thing. Has some nasty scaring down the left side o' her face that's made her blind in tha' eye. I found her too, but gave her te m'friend instead o' keepin' her. Ye see, his left eye..." She wrinkled her nose and seemed to decide against sharing that part of the story. "Well, le's just say they're amusin' te watch." Taking a sip of her whiskey, she grinned. "Vex is a righ' lil terror, but she keeps him on his toes."

And the little fox had kept her from killing the foolish man the morning after...She still didn't want to think about it because as of yet, she wasn't even sure how she felt about the whole situation. But, as cunning as a fox could be, the little furry vixen had warmed her up enough to leave without throttling Desmond right then and there.

She gestured at his bloody shirt, pointedly ignoring her own. "Ye'll need a new shirt anyway. Mayhaps I'll introduce ye an' swipe ye a shirt from Desmond."

Grimacing a bit at the idea of stealing a stranger's clothes, Remi's eyes nevertheless twinkled with amusement. "Seems a bit of an imposition, no? Showing up on the man's doorstep and absconding with his shirt. I may..." he glanced down, actually taking a close look at the damage to his shirt and frowned. "No, I won't be able to repair that. I suppose I will need a new one."

He leaned back comfortably in the chair, one hand resting across his bandaged stomach to ease the ache of the wound as he took another pull from his glass. Thinking about the fox and her name, he pursed his lips.

"If she's a 'right little terror' then the name is apt," he said with a shrug and a wry grin. "But to each their own." He looked down at his blissfully happy dog with a fond smile and shrugged again. "On the other hand, I may be the wrong man to ask. I did name my male dog 'boy' after all."

"Tch, damnit. No one's on my side," she grumbled, but laughed when he pointed out the meaning of Beau's name. "Aye, yer righ', yer no' the best person to ask. Bu' I like the humor in it. An' if ye dislike the thought o' permanently borrowin' Des' shirt, well, I can make ye one."

Her golden eyes glittered as they caught the firelight, but there was a bit of excitement there too. One of her best kept secrets was that she was an extremely skilled seamstress, having learned from her grandmother for many years as she grew older. Granted, the clothing styles of Sunderland were far different than Gaels, and Gallia different still...But as she eyed his torn shirt, she felt confident that she could replicate it. She'd even stashed some fabric somewhere one day when she'd seen a street merchant selling bolts of it in a variety of colors.

"An' I promise it willna look awful, or girly. I'm pretty good at sewing."

He tilted his head curiously at that. "A warrior, a tamer of wild beasts, and a seamstress. Truly you are a woman of many talents," he teased with a smirk. Such a volatile creature; it was fascinating to watch her, like the unpredictable flicker of a flame. And just as dangerous.

Not that Beau seemed to care; the dog was half-asleep in bliss with his chin on Soi's knee and his rump being scratched by his master. Fascinating yes, in the dog's estimation, as all Givers of Good Things were. If she were dangerous, it wasn't to him.

He took another pull from his glass as he thought it over, then nodded. "I'm curious to see what you do. And I'd prefer not to steal this Des' clothes. So I will take you up on your most generous offer, if you're sure you don't mind."

She blamed the whiskey for the blush she felt on her cheeks just then and laid her hand on Beau's soft head, fingers lightly scratching. "An' a woman tha's likin' these compliments." She tilted her head back and downed the rest of her drink, eyes closing as she smiled at the burn down her throat. Then she gently moved Beau's head and rose to her feet, swaying only a little.

"Ye'll have te give me tha' bloody thing, though. Off with it! I need te see some o' the stitchin'," she said as she disappeared into the back room again, which was presumably her sleeping quarters. He heard the sound of things being moved here and shoved there and her voice coming a little muffled, "I've go' similar fabric, though it's a wee bit darker. Better, uh, te hide any bloodstains..."

Remi felt a startled blush color his cheekbones at the idea of disrobing in a relative (and rather attractive) stranger's home, but he didn't care to push his luck any further after he'd insisted she allow him to tend to her wound before his own.

Beau followed Soi into her back room, helping her find what she was looking for by sniffing everything at least three times and wagging his tail a lot. He was clever enough to stay out of her way, though, nimbly avoiding her uncoordinated steps as she reeled around the little room.

Likely the alcohol made Remi's choice easier, as he didn't debate long. He stood and pulled the ruined shirt off, turning his back towards the doorway where Soi had vanished as he held it up to the light to better see the damage that had been wrought to the garment. This had the unintended consequence of giving her a clear view of the series of thin, straight scars that crisscrossed his back and shoulders when she did return.

"I'm not particular about the color," he responded, his brow still creased in annoyance at the destruction of his shirt. "I'm sure whatever you've got is fine."

Ashtiel Arykosa
These are of course lash scars. Up to you whether Soi recognizes them for what they are, though I don't know why she wouldn't.

Finally gathering her supplies and finding the right fabric, she turned and nearly ran into Beau, but the dog was more than agile enough to evade her drunken stumbles. Patting him on the head affectionately, she stepped through the doorway, but as soon as she looked up, she stopped. Her touch hadn't been enough to uncover the severity of the scars across his back. A latticework of healed torment, they made her heart ache and an anger for his sake start to build within her. But there was nothing she could do now; they were long healed, and if they had anything to do with whatever he hadn't felt like sharing, than she would not press him for information on them.

Brushing past him, she set her supplies on the table before whirling and snatching his torn shirt from his grasp. Fingering the fabric, she held it up and inspected it, though things were a bit...blurry. And her hair, still too long since Desmond had refused to cut it, had fallen into her face. Blowing the errant strand from her eyes, she said, "Mmmhmm, this shouldna' be a problem." Should she wait until morning, when she was sober? Scrunching her nose, she almost immediately decided against it. Her hands never shook or wavered when drunk, but hungover...? That was a different story altogether. She peeked surreptitiously at the rest of him over the top of the shirt, glad that her guess had been right. He was a fine creature to look at.

"Now," she blurted, blinking away her own distractions, "tell me a tale, any kind, of yer travels while I work." With that, she took scissors to fabric and began cutting.

Remi returned to his seat by the fire to stay out of her way, flopping down in the chair much as he had before and emptying his glass as he mulled over which tale to tell her.

He had a thousand stories. Silly ones, somber ones, harrowing ones, and ones that would make the blood boil. He'd seen festivals and funerals, battles and barn-raisings. All were interesting in their own way. But what story would the Lady Soibhan most like to hear?

A thought struck him, and his lips curled in a wicked grin. "I could tell you the tale of how I got kicked out of the mercenary company I'd worked with for years," he said with a chuckle. "It's all his fault." He pointed at Beau as he said it, still chuckling to himself at the memory.
