Kyouya shook his head, still amused. "I've been told so. I've also been told I'll be dead of old age before I'm twenty-five." That didn't stop him from quietly feeling pleased that she was comfortable enough to be silly, even if he wasn't. The song eluded him; his French was tolerable at reading pace, but certainly not at singing, and all he could grasp was the chorus, mostly thanks to the repetition.

As was to be expected, the museum was a modern thing of steel, concrete, and glass, glowing with incandescent light through the grey of the rain, though it was oddly counterpointed by a nearby cemetery. He slipped out of the car quickly, to hold his umbrella for her until she could get out and settled with her own.
"No no, do not wait for me, hurry inside before we both are wet through!" Waving at him to leave off with letting himself get even wetter by holding his umbrella out for her instead. For herself she darted out of the car, umbrella popped open before she was fully out, and made a dash for the museum entrance.

The weather certainly had one benefit, that being how few people were willing to brave the rain to come out. Aside from a handful of docents and a small cluster of old ladies in silly hats, the museum was virtually deserted. Shiny let Kyouya have his gentlemanly moment by handing over her umbrella to him, letting him deal with the wet things while she went and bought their tickets.

"Here is your ticket and brochure, though I do not see why they insist on tickets at all; you buy one only to give it back not a minute later."

"Well, not the whole thing -- they usually tear it in half," Kyouya pointed out. He was still a touch damp -- the rain had managed to semi-soak his overcoat and the edges of his blazer were damp. At least the museum was pleasantly warm. "Thank you for purchasing the ticket; that wasn't necessary, especially given that I invited you. I appreciate it."

He glanced at the brochure, then around the museum, seeking the entrance for the exhibit.

"You were busy, it was convenient." Waving a dismissive hand at his thanks. It wasn't like the cost was of any real significance, because Rich People. "And beside, that is what friends do for one another, is it not?"

She led him to the entrance and onwards to the first room of the show, which had only one piece on display.

"Mm." It was, perhaps, a touch of a concession, hidden under that deliberately noncommittal monosyllable -- that was subtly cut off as his eyes fell on the first sculpture.

To his eyes, it looked shockingly familiar, though it wouldn't to anyone else; perhaps just a representation of how art meant different things to different people. "Impressive," he said coolly, as he paced the length of it, closing in to examine the way it was crafted, as well as stepping back to take it at full length. "The motion in it is really very vibrant, especially as it's done without the assistance of color."

"It looks like music to me." Smiling softly as she took in the installation from a point in the middle of the room, head tilting lightly to one side. "Like an explosion of music splashing and rippling outward in a wild dance."

She studied it for a moment longer, tilting her head to the other side, "or like flowers blooming from paint splatters. What do you see?"

There was a pause, as the third son of the Ootori family had another sense of dejá vu, which was rather intimately tied to the previous one. That sensation promptly got boxed -- or would have been, if he could have found a box large enough.

"I'll admit that the idea of music hadn't occurred to me, though it makes sense now that you mention it." Kyouya very carefully readjusted his glasses. "It does resemble flowers, though, doesn't it?" A small gesture of his hand indicated the sweep that the imaginary brush would have taken. "Very expressive; I see why you were saying the art was good. I hope the other pieces are equally impressive."

Preferably more so; perhaps he could push that uncomfortable sensation of somehow being unwittingly read from his mind.

Kyouya was getting nervous for no reason, for although she was indeed interested in his interpretation of the work... Shiny was definitely not looking at those interpretations as a means of interpreting him in turn. Silly Ootori, stop worrying so.

The next room was a series by one artist of "trash" sculptures, built from salvaged items to create things like a dragon in flight or a car made entirely of hubcaps. Interesting and well executed, though perhaps not particularly innovative. Still Shiny would insist on taking at least a moment for each piece, wanting to give the art a chance to speak its message even if she didn't wind up having anything to say in reply.

Moving on to the next she was visibly excited, catching hold of his hand to hurry him along, "This is the glass work, I didn't get to see these last time I came!"

Well, Kyouya supposed at least one round of piles of trash was to be expected -- though at least these piles were more than just piles, and had actually been manipulated. Still, he had no regrets about being hurried along, although there was the usual mild surprise and slightly-uncomfortable feeling at the familiarity when she'd grabbed his hand.

That feeling evaporated as she brought him to the glass -- he was immediately absorbed by the multiple layers of textures, motion, and representation -- this piece evoked so many ideas at once, to him. "Fascinating," he murmured softly, taking it in from all angles. "What do you see?"

"Hmm..." The fallen star moved slowly around the piece, taking it in from every angle before returning to the front of the display case.

"I see a woman dancing." Then she moved to the left side of the case, "I see two fish kissing." And then to the right side, "And I see the wind, swirling playfully and catching up seeds to scatter."

Smiling over to him. "You?"

"Koi, yes -- though I'd been thinking upstream and downstream ... and the colored sections mind me of shrimp, as well, splashing in the water." He followed the lower contour line. "And they remind me of ... yes, dancing, but not a woman ..." He sought for the right word. "That American flute-god?" The name escaped him, though the symbol was iconic enough to have earned a spot in that steel-trap mind.

"And DNA." The last was said with a smile. "The structure," he gestured to the clear side, "and the variability," he pointed at the colored. "So much life expressed just in silicon and a few other chemicals."

She blinked at him in surprise at the flute-god one. "You see a Kokopelli?" Figures she'd know the name of it. She didn't know about spin the bottle or inhaling helium, but she knew the name of a native american fertility god.

At his comments she did another turn around the sculpture, trying to see what he did. It took her leaning over almost horizontal before her face lit up in recognition, "Oh! Yes I see it now, how marvelous!"

"Yes, thank you, that's what I meant. Not one, though. Two." Kyouya tracked the line of the lower clear curve. "See, the head and the humpbacked body, and the colored glass is the flute. The other is inverted above."

He'd been absent for the spin-the-bottle moment, so the odd spaces in her knowledge weren't immediately obvious. Besides, she clearly liked things of beauty (he certainly had enough text messages to prove that), so it made sense she would know. "Really, this is a lovely piece." He noted the name of the artist for future reference ... and perhaps investment.

"Mhmm, yes I see them now. Isn't it wondrous, how two people can look at the same thing and yet see it in such different ways?" The artist had other works on display, each very skillfully made and just as fun to interpret as the first one they encountered.

There was another glass artist as well, their pieces much more traditional in terms of shape and style (bowls with pretty color swirls, vases with interesting patterns) and then there were other rooms they went through, mostly abstract forms made in various materials.

In the last room they'd finally run into that gaggle of old ladies in funny hats, who set upon Kyouya as only old ladies can do, asking his opinions on their favorite pieces, shamelessly enquiring after his pedigree and if he was betrothed yet and by the time they were done he'd have six pictures of eligible granddaughters, and Shiny was off on the other side of the room, quietly looking at the seated figure of a woman

Not only did he have six pictures of eligible granddaughters, he had five new names to file away later that evening, and a reacquaintance with the mother of one of his father's business partners. Kyouya made a point of carefully and thoughtfully answering all of the Red Hat Society's questions, and inquiring after their own families and their art preferences as well, that cool Ootori charm turned up to its polite best. A very profitable and useful few minutes, he thought.

It was, therefore, only when the last of them had bid him farewell that he turned to look at the last sculpture. The Red Hats had already viewed it, some with some contempt for the nudity, others waxing elegant about the power it gave to the feminine role. Thus forewarned with their assumptions, he paused to view it from across the room, attempting to take it in whole and unbiased, before moving to join Shiny at one of the benches nearby it.

He was not sure he'd ever seen quite that contemplative a look on her face, so he said nothing, but simply waited. Perhaps he thought it would be undiplomatic to interrupt her thoughts, or perhaps it was a moment to read her expression further.

What he'd see in her expression was a sort of wistfulness mixed with longing. It was several moments more before she made any indication that she noticed he'd joined her, that luminous gaze remaining on the statue though she spoke to him. "She's lovely, don't you think?"
