Quest Time!
Annora has been with you for about a month now, and it's time for her to grow!
As a siren, she has a natural affinity to water and anything related to water. In order to help her grow accustomed to her new life and advance to her next stage, Annora needs a way to be able to commune with her natural element without being taken too far away from her home. Your quest is to find five objects from the sea for her, and to find a way (or build a way) for her to relax and lounge in the water whenever she likes.
Feel free to draw, post photos, or what have you... but make sure to RP it out either alone or with someone else!

Trio had finally gotten the hang of this front-carrier packish sort of thing that held Annora. It had taken a while, of course. First there was the fear of hurting Annora's neck, and then, when the girl's neck grew strong enough to hold her head up, it was just the general worry about being jostled. But finally, after a lot of time, Trio had grown comfortable enough with it that walking through downtown Durem was a snap, despite the crowds around her. She'd already done her shopping, picking up new diapers and food for the girl, along with a couple of new outfits. The items were heading back with Dalreidan, leaving Trio with just Annora, Sankouri, and Trinity to worry about. The fandangle, disliking crowds, darted upward, floating a couple of feet above Trio's head as she made her way along the sidewalk, windowshopping casually. The Zurui, on the other hand, remained close, pressed nearly against Trio's shin as he padded silently beside her.
Keelan balked at the people, calling out names that sounded like, WinK, Angie, Zero, and made a few sounds that sounded entirely equine as he whickered when he was pushed through the crowd. With a small kick he tried to plant a hoof on the shin of a man who had shoved him a little more roughly than the others. As his hooves tripped over the cobblestones he tipped over and slammed lightly into a door of a nearby shop with a small whinny, tears running down his small face. He wasn't sure coming to Durem had been such the wonderful idea now that he had been separated from Zero.
Trinity was the first to spy Keelan, the fandangle twisting for a moment before darting through the crowd with practiced ease. He came up behind Keelan, examining him closely for a moment before stretching out one blue gem to tap Keelan's head lightly. "Hello!" came a bright, mechanical voice.
Keelan was wiping his eyes as the fandangle looked him over, but when he heard the voice, so near and felt the tap on his head, he jumped a little, looking at the thing with bright, scared eyes. "H-hello," he said, startled into not being rude by the weird thing before him. It was so pretty ... and it talked? He just stared openly, his tears on his face, drying, forgotten.
"Are you unhappy?" Trio's familiar asked, in a curious, unsympathetic voice. It turned, gems spinning about as it started to float around him.
Keelan watched the fandangle, blinking in awe as he watched it move, his head turning to follow its movements as he thought about this. "Yes," he said with a realizing pout as he came up with a response. "I'm lost. I want to go home, and I need help and everyone here is mean." Tears threatened to overturn from his eyes again.
"Trinity!" came a sharp voice through the crowd, Trio finally catching up with her wayward familiar. She drew up short as she noticed him talking to Keelan, her brows drawing together a bit. He was... well, not small, precisely, but not large either! "Uh... hi?" she tried, as Trinity remained near his new friend. Sankouri padded forward a bit, sniffing at one of Keelan's hooves.
Keelan's eyes went wide as he looked at the creature sniffing his foot, his horse-instincts taking over he whinnied loudly and jumped a little, scrambling to get to his feet. "Hello," he said a bit belatedly. Looking up at Trio he blinked, eyeing her carry-pouch that was anchored to her chest, though keeping an eye on Sankouri.
"He won't bite," Trio assured him, reaching out to lay a gentle hand on his shoulder. "Sankouri's just curious about you. Are you okay?" she added, curling one hand around Annora as she leaned forward to peer at Keelan. "Where are your parents?"
Keelan blinked up at Trio, and while she wasn't much more taller than the boy (he usually came up to WinK's waist, and the angel was rather tall himself) he still felt slightly uneasy. "I don't know," he said, looking rather guilty. "I got scared, and ran off. I'm looking for home," he said, looking back up at the woman, and reaching out on a limb asked, "Do you know where WinK lives?"
"...Wink?" Trio blinked, the name very familiar. "...Wink who helps care for all the Nereids?" Trio grinned.
Keelan's eyes shot open. Finally! Someone might be able to take him home, instead of just guessing. "Yes! He has a lot of them! Mari, Covet, Angela, Aerin, Dehlia, Lorilei, Maris, Seanah, and ... an egg," he added, blinking. He looked up at the woman, his hands clutching. "Do those sound familiar? Do you know WinK?" he fired questions at her, clinging to hope.
"I've met him sometimes, but I don't know where he lives," Trio said apologetically, then offered a soft smile. "However, I DO know how to get you to a place where either someone will know where he lives or where he?s likely to find you," she added, standing straight and offering a hand to him. At her shoulder, Trinity spun gleefully. "What do you say?"
Keelan blinked, looking forlorn for a moment before the hand was offered. Tugging on his short stump of a pony tail with one hand he took her hand with his free one. "Where is that?" he asked, trying not to get upset again. There was really no point was there? He was getting closer to WinK all the time, though at the moment he still felt completely lost.
"A shop I?ve been to. Wink should figure to go there," Trio said gently. "And I'll be there. I'm not about to leave you until I know you're back with Wink, or that you're headed there and ONLY there, okay?" she promised.
Keelan looked up at the woman and blinked, decided that he could trust her. He'd trusted all the other nice ladies hadn't he? Why not this one? Besides ... the floating thing that talked with the metalic voice was nice. "My name is Keelan," he offered with a small smile.
"I'm Trio," the blonde smiled at him, squeezing his hand lightly. "The fandangle there that found you? He's called Trinity. And the zurui that was sniffing your hoof is Sankouri. And this little girl is Annora," she added, leaning forward again so that he could properly see the sleeping baby's face.
Keelan nodded, looking at each of the introduced creatures in turn, trying to remember their names easily. Lifting his chin a little to look down at Annora easier he let out a sharp whinny and backed up a few steps, his hand tugging on Trio's so he couldn't get very far. "She's a siren!" he said, his eyes wild.
Trio blinked, then smiled and nodded. "That's right, she is. You know of them?" she asked, trying to keep herself from looking alarmed. If she seemed even slightly startled by Keelan's reaction, it could make him feel more afraid of... well, whatever it was he'd been frightened by.
Keelan looked at Trio as if she'd grown three heads. "She's a siren! They can be deadly!" he said, remembering the words his father had taught him while still living in Arcadia before he came to live with WinK. "'Be lured not by their beautiful voices, for in beauty comes death,'" he breathed, looking at Annora and shaking, his voice barely above a whisper.
Trio glanced around, then waved Keelan over to a small alcove for a shop's door. Kneeling there, she awkwardly lifted the little girl out of her carrier and held her up. "It's okay," she said gently. "she won't hurt you."
Keelan still kept his distance from the baby, though he followed Trio, his hooves prancing over the cobblestones wearily. "They can kill even as small children," he said, looking over the child. "My father warned me about them when I started playing by the river ... " He frowned, looking at the baby that seemed so harmless.
"Wink warned you?" Trio prodded, raising an eyebrow. "Or your first father?"
Keelan looked up at Trio, his big gray eyes blinking. "My father, Delahn-fel. He told me I had to live with WinK, and so I did because I am a fel and I do what is best," he said, nodding. The words sounded as if they had been practiced, a stanza said over and over again through time.
"Kinda like how Annora came to live with me," Trio said softly. "Only... I don't think she remembers her parents. You're luckier than her for that, aren't you?"
Keelan wrinkled his nose, thinking slightly as he pondered this, his eyes still on the baby. "I'm not sure. I remember my parents and my friends, and that I am a fel, but none of that matters here does it?" he looked up at her, taking his eyes off of the baby. "I'll always have those memories, but in the end I'll wonder which world would have been better for me." He blinked, mentally kicking himself. His father had told him that on Gaia with WinK was the safest, best place for him, and he had questioned the leading fel. He looked a bit shamefaced as he realized this.
Trio carefully put Annora back into her carrier, smiling as the girl woke and fussed a bit. With practiced ease, Trio reached into her pack, grabbing a small disk that seemed to sing and handing it to the girl. Almost immediately, she quieted, one tiny hand clutching the sprocket while her cheek rested against Trio's chest. That done, the blonde reached out, drawing Keelan a little closer. "What if... I taught her that hurting others was wrong?" she suggested to Keelan. "Would you feel a bit safer around her, knowing that?"
Keelan was drawn out of his musings as he was drawn towards Trio and listened to her words before thinking deeply about them. His small head nodded, his loose black strands of hair moving slightly as he nodded. "Maybe she'll listen and not kill anyone?" he asked, not realizing how silly he sounded. Annora was only a baby, but to his young but trained mind she was still a threat in the end.
"Maybe," Trio nodded, offering Keelan a smile. "Maybe you could help me teach her," she added, grinning at Keelan.
Keelan blinked, looking down at Annora something in his mind, the fel part of him, kicked in and he nodded before looking back up at Trio. "If I can, then I would like to," he said simply, his tail swishing slightly.
"Good," Trio grinned at him, squeezing his hand again. "I bet, between the two of us, we can make sure she knows that hurting people is wrong. What do you think?" At that, she rose, smiling brightly. Annora shifted when she did, moving so that her huge, indigo eyes could watch Keelan curiously. "Let's go, hmm?"
Keelan took Trio's hand, about to open his mouth to respond when Annora looked at him. His large gray eyes blinked and his head tilted to the side as the hairs on the back of his neck rose slightly. Don't be agraid, don't be afraid, don't be afraid ... she's just a baby. He peered at her for a moment before realizing Trio had spoken. "I think ... that's good," he said, still mesmerized by the siren as he looked back down at the young indigo eyes.
Annora's eyes lit up as he spoke, and her mouth opened, something garbled and incoherent slipping from it as she reached out a hand to bat at him. The hand then moved into her mouth, and she sucked on her fingers quietly as Trio walked.
"I'm glad," Trio noted, not missing the way Annora responded to Keelan. "I think she likes you." She offered the fel a crooked grin, squeezing his hand gently.
Keelan jumped little when Annora batted at him before sucking on her fingers quietly. Glancing up at Trio, hearing her words, he gulped slightly. She liked him? Isn't that a good thing? He was supposed to help Trio teach Annora to be good? Looking at the pair he blinked, a little surprised that a siren would like him for something other than pray. Trying to change the subject he looked up at the blonde woman and flicked his tail. "How far is this place?" he asked, trying to sound polite. His eyes strayed back to Annora as he waited for her answer.
Trio smiled, navigating through the crowds easily, even with Keelan beside her. Trinity had darted up, peering over the people to help guide them along. "Once we get to the bus stop, it's not too far. Have you ever ridden a bus before?"
Keelan looked up at Trio, his face puckering into a slight frown as he thought. Bus? He'd never really payed attention. "No, Miss Trio," he said politely, glancing around. "I never have. WinK walks everywhere, so I've never been in a car either." He paused to think. "I do not think I would fit very well in cars ... will I fit into a bus?"
"Well, buses in Gaia are a bit different from elsewhere. I think you'll be okay, though you probably won't be able to sit down," she decided. "And it'll be a good experience for you!" She made her way to a corner, stopping near a bright red sign with a stylized bus on it. "This is a bus stop. You wait here, and eventually, a bus will stop and pick you up."
Annora shifted, starting to fuss slightly as she decided that the front carrier was becoming a bit too confining.
Keelan blinked, looking up at the sign. "Eventually? Is there a time it comes, or do you just wait? What if it never comes? Are you stuck here forever?" He changed his gaze from the sign to Trio and the fussing Annora. Why was she fusing? he wondered. Was the carrier not comfortable? He'd never been that helpless. When he was born he simply stood and walked, like all centaurs did.
"It'll eventually come," Trio assured him. "Sometimes, they just take a little while because the drivers get to have breaks and eat, too. Generally, on weekdays you wait around ten to fifteen minutes. Weekends, you can wait up to a half hour." She reached up, awkwardly lifting Annora out of the carrier and examining her closely, including sniffing at the air near her. Satisfied that everything was still more or less clean, she tucked the girl back in the carrier, then rummaged in the bag at her side for a stuffed animal which Annora used to cuddle. "When we get there, I'll spread out a blanket and let her relax a bit in the sun."
Keelan watched Annora as she was put back into the carrier, but listened to Trio's words. "So we just wait?" he said, clearly stumped. Buses were confusing. He prefered walking, the only person you had to wait on was you. Then again, he glanced down at his hooves, digging into the ground lightly with his front right hoof, he had to walk everywhere. Looking back up at Trio he shielded his eyes from the sun.
Trio opened her mouth to say more, then grinned, peering off into the street. "And here comes our bus," she noted, fishing in the bag again and coming up with some change. "We'll be there in no time."
Watching Trio he heard the jingling of change and felt a small pang of guilt. Buses cost money ... when he was back home with WinK he'd ask the angel to pay Miss Trio back for her kindness. Glancing at the upcoming bus he looked with inquisitive eyes. It certainly was big enough to fit him. Looking at Annora he wondered if she liked buses too.
Annora had moved on to chewing on her stuffed animal's arm, eyes wide and curious as she continued to watch Keelan. Again she tried to speak, this time not even bothering to remove the toy from her mouth, which only made things worse.
Trio lifted a hand, stroking Annora's hair as the bus pulled to a stop before them, the doors swinging open. "Okay, Keelan. You on first, and just wait near the front for me to get on and pay."
Keelan looked at the pair and blinked before looking at the open door and the steps that led up. He hated stairs ... stealing himself he scrambled up the stairs, slipping once or twice before he stood on the flat floor of the bus, looking around as he waited for Trio.
Trio followed after a moment, dropping a handful of change into the small container and retrieving two tickets. "There we go. Move toward the back of the bus, where you see those other doors, Keelan," she directed, following him. "It'll take about a half hour to get to our stop."
Keelan moved to the area of the bus that Trio had told him to go towards and stood in the aisle a little, too big and bulky to fit into the chairs. He never understood chairs honestly, though as far as they went, these looked rather uncomfortable. Looking back at Trio's hoarde he wondered how often the woman traveled by bus.
It looked, from the way Sankouri and Trinity moved into place immediately and without direction, like she rode fairly often. "Comfortable?" she asked gently, smiling at him.
Keelan returned the smile and nodded. "Very, thank you," he said, keeping a hand on the back of her seat. The bus stopped and moved and until he was able to get used to the motions and keep his balance he thought it best to brace himself. He stared out the window as the scenery rolled past, glancing at Annora and Trio as the world outside flew by. Could he ever run this fast?
Annora seemed much less interested in the fast-paced scenery. Instead, she reached for his hand, trying to catch it in one of her own. A soft, babyish sound slipped from her throat, but Trio ignored it, seeming very used to such things by now.
Keelan blinked at the little siren, not moving his hand thought it was hard not to. Every instinct in his body urged him to run when she reached for him, but he'd told Trio, given her his word. Instead he just watched her, blinking as she talked in a language he couldn't understand.
She finally managed to latch hold of his thumb, squealing in delight and immediately dragging it toward her. Trio watched the two with a fond smile, then glanced at him. "See?"
He jumped visibly when she grabbed his thumb and claimed it for her own. Looking at Trio, his eyes scared but his body stating that he was relaxed as possible. "See what? She likes fingers?" Keelan refrained from adding that he hoped she didn't like to eat them yet.
"She likes YOU," Trio countered, as Annora brought the thumb to her mouth and shoved it in without ceremony.
Eyes registered shock, the slight disgust. Eiw, baby spit. He didn't pull his finger away though, for risk of upsetting Annora. Even baby sirens could be deadly if they screamed loud enough, and he'd rather not risk that. "I suppose she does," he said, blinking as he watched, and felt with slight horror, Annora slobber on his finger.
Annora gummed the thumb for a while, babbling happily at him as though he might understand her around the digit.
Trio chuckled, eventually moving to take Keelan's hand and carefully free it. Annora's face screwed up to cry, and at that moment, Trinity floated closer to examine the thumb. Eyes dazzled by the shiny, Annora's temper tantrum faded away.
Keelan blinked, examining his thumb, now covered in siren drool and tried not to make a face as a glob of it dripped down to his wrist. Quickly before it could get very far he wiped it on his vest, already neatly destroyed from his run through the woods. As he wiped his hand dry he wrinkled his nose at Annora before looking at Trio. "Can you understand her? I can't," he said, looking back at the child.
Trio chuckled. "No. She's not really speaking right now. She hears us speaking, but she doesn't really understand what we're doing. That'll come in time."
"Oh," he said simply, blinking down at the baby. Glancing up out the window he raised an eyebrow, thinking. The buildings were gone, replaced now by trees that were wizzing by the windows quickly. "Are we almost there?" he asked, not taking his gray gaze off of the greenery passing the window.
"Soon," Trio said gently, as Annora settled in to sleep again, her cheek pillowed against Trio's chest.
Keelan nodded and envied Annora. WinK usually made him take naps during the day, no matter how much he insisted that he didn't need such a childish tradition. In his mind he liked the naps, and usually fell asleep right away. How he wished he could just curl up and nap now, but he couldn't. Not until he was back at home with WinK. Was this closer to the angel? He thought about it, and every step was closer to something, so he supposed he was moving forward, and not back.
Trio peered at Keelan for a bit, then reached out, touching his cheek. "Don't worry. You'll get home soon."
Startled a little he looked at Trio and thought for a moment before smiling gently, his pearly teeth shining. "I know. Thank you very much for helping me as much as you have ... you don't have to, but you are. That's kindness right?" he asked, tilting his head to the side.
"I like to think it is," Trio nodded. "You have to figure that out for yourself, though." She watched him for a moment, then smiled. "Keelan... if you had a pet companion, would you make certain to take good care of him?"
His mind reeled to catch up, a bit caught off guard by this sudden change in topic. Gray eyes looked at the blonde woman before nodding. "I would. I help take care of the Pixa that live on WinK's land ... they like me, and WinK says it'll teach me respons ... sponsa-bil-i-ty," he said, pronouncing it carefully.
Trio beamed. "Then you're already familiar with them. I'm going to call Levon. He'll meet us at Jaden's with a special Pixa, just for you, all right? Take care of the pixa, and whenever you're in trouble, that pixa will guide you to my home. There's always someone there who will help you."
Keelan perked and his tail swished and flicked quickly, his eyes alight. His very own? The pixa on WinK's land had adopted the family as they moved into the house, but one he could call his own? His smile was more than enough answer for Trio, but he added with words, "Oh, thank you Miss Trio! Thank you, thank you!"
Trio grinned brightly at him. "I hope to see you at our house often, of course. And not just because you're in trouble."
Keelan blushed slightly. "Ma'am, aside from tracking mud into the kitchen this is the first trouble I've ever been in," he said a bit sheepishly. His mind reeled at the idea still, excited. He would get to name it as well, how exciting. Or did pixa come with names? He chomped his teeth, resembling a horse biting at the bit as he thought.
"Keelan?"
Startled out of his thoughts he looked at the blonde. "Yes ma'am?" he asked her, his nose scrunched a little as he debated between names of the unknown pixa.
Trio grinned widely. "My name's Trio. I'd really like it if you called me that."
A wry smile, a truly impish look for the young centaur who usually seemed to be polite and calm, felt over his lips. "Yes, Miss Trio," he said, not entirely giving up his protocol.
Trio grinned widely, ruffling his hair before pulling out a blue phone and placing a call.
Keelan blushed slightly and his hands fixed his hair as he looked at the phone oddly before looking out the window again, his ears perked as he lost interest in the trees quickly and started examinging Trio's familiars and the sleeping Annora.
Annora slept quietly, occasionally sucking at her two middle fingers. But she seemed so peaceful there, comfortably draped and content. Trinity, on the other hand, was on the go, darting back and forward throughout the bus every time a mechanical sound - such as a phone or computer - was heard. Sankouri was the calmest of the three, simply sitting at Trio's ankles an waiting.
Keelan blinked down at the calm Sankouri and smiled before glancing at Trio. She'd said a half an hour, but he was still horrible with telling time, and without a watch to even guess at, he wasn't really good at guessing how much time had passed either. Instead of asking again he simply waited and remained quiet, trying to command his eyes not to droop.
"We're almost there," she finally told Keelan. "Two stops from now. When you get off, I'd like you to go out those doors," she added, pointing toward doors in the back of the bus. "Can you do that?"
Listening he blinked before looking at the doors. Studying them he nodded, biting his lower lip as if concentrating. "Yes, Miss Trio," he said, remembering to count two more stops.
Trio smiled proudly, moving to get up after one stop and pulling a cord at the top of the bus. A small chime sounded. Several minutes later, the bus rumbled to a halt. "Now, Keelan," Trio prompted, as Annora woke and began to fuss.
Keelan turned and headed for the doors, balking as he was about to walk down. It seemed slightly dangerous and instead of taking the time to amble down them slowly -everyone seemed to be in a hurry- he simply lept. His legs gave a little as he landed but he caught himself and looked back at Trio and the others.
Trio's eyes were wide, one arm outstretched as though to catch him somehow. It took a moment before she made her own, much slower, way down the steps, swallowing and moving to catch his shoulder. "You scared me..."
Keelan blinked, looking up at the woman, not realizing that he had startled her. "I'm sorry ... I ... it's hard for me to go down steps," he said, looking rather chastized. "Up is easy, but down ... " he made a motion with his hand before giving up, blushing furiously as he bowed his head, looking slightly ashamed.
Trio leaned in, hugging him with one arm. Annora, for a moment, shifted, cuddling against his shoulder before Trio let go. "C'mon... Levon should be waiting for us."
Keelan looked up at Trio, smiling as she hugged him before taking a look around as the bus chugged off. Traffic here seemed to be nonexsistant other than the bus dissapearing into the woods at the other end of the field. The field itself looked wonderful and he'd love to run around for a bit. It reminded him of WinK's orchard in the back of the house. Suddenly reminded of why they were here he spotted ... a house? "Is that it?" he said, looking up at Trio once more.
She nodded gently. "That's where Jaden is. I think he lives there," she noted, remembering the cheerful satyr who'd given her Annora's harp. "He'll be able to get you back to your home." Setting a hand on Keelan's shoulder, she glanced over, chuckling softly when another figure stepped out of nearby shadows.
"You said to meet you here?" came the cheerful voice of the kitsune, one hand cupped and held against his stomach, as though to steady something small within.
Keelan blinked. The name sounded ... vague. As if he'd heard it a long, long time ago back in Arcadia. It had certainly never been mentioned to him in Gaia, though now that he thought about it WinK might have muttered that name once or twice when he was having problems with the young centaur.
He jumped, hearing the voice. Having been concentrating on Trio, Keelan hadn't even taken the time to look around. Looking over at the kitsune he tilted his head up, chin to the side a little. It was a very horse-like gesture, but one that gave him a slightly dangerous look (or would when he was older, right now it was just silly) when he looked at the man who startled him.
"You must be Keelan," the man went on, his decidedly animalish features still reinforcing the easy smile he bore. "I brought a friend for you, I'm told..." Cupping both hands together, he held out the tiny pixapet to Keelan.

Taking a step back as the man came closer he didn't want to appear to easily distracted. Then, looking down at the little puppy his eyes shot open. "It looks like me!" he said, awed. Reaching his hands out slowly he let the little dog sniff him. After a moment a small velvety tongue began to lick his fingers, making the centaur laugh. "Is he really mine? Really?" he said, looking up at Trio and the man.
Levon chuckled, but it was Trio who answered. "He's all yours, so long as you take good care of him. He's very intelligent, and can even speak to you, though he'll probably be reluctant at first. So if you ever get yourself into trouble, listen to him, okay?"
Taking the little pup into his arms, petting the soft fur, Keelan looked up at Trio and grinned. "Thank you, Miss Trio!" he said, practically gushing. Touching the mark on his face, he smiled down at the creature. "I shall call him Schola." The puppy panted happily and started to sniff all over the little boy, causing him to laugh, his tail flicking happily, just as the dog's.
The door to the house, which in fact was a shop, Keelan was about to learn, opened and a creature stepped out that was very familiar to the centaur's eyes, even if the actual individual wasn't. "Shashi!" he said with a grin, turning to look up at Trio again. "Trio, it's a Satyr!"
Jaden chuckled and walked over to the small group, grinning down at the young colt. "Yes, I am." Turning to look at Trio his smile remained, spying the little Annora in her arms. "Are we all going to stay outside or are you going to run off?"
Trio blushed faintly, stroking Annora's back as the tiny girl shifted in her carrier before turning deep indigo eyes on Jaden. "I've brought you a wayward young man," she noted, looking over at Keelan. "Any chance you might be able to contact Wink and let him know where his charge is?"
Keelan looked up at the adults before looking at Annora with a smile, Schola happily leaning against his shoulder, resting in one arm. He learned a while ago that it was a wise idea that when adults talked it was always a wise idea to listen.
"Wayward? He's gotten lost then?" he said, turning eyes down to Keelan who didn't balk or blink but returned his gaze curiously. "I'll certainly do my best," he said. "Why don't you run inside and look around?" He chuckled as Schola yipped in agreement and the centaur gave a quick hug to Trio before trotting into the building happily. He knew he was in good hands.
"You're running off now?" Jaden asked politely.
Trio watched Keelan go, then turned to Jaden. "As long as he's safe, yeah. I found him in Durem wandering around." As she paused, Trinity hovered near her shoulder, chiming sharply at her. "I'm afraid I've still got a few errands myself. You're certain you can get in touch with Wink?"
Jaden smiled sweetly at Trio and looked down at Annora, admiring the young siren. "I'll certainly be able to get in touch. Want me to pass along a message?" he said, raising an eyebrow, his eyes sparkling mischeviously.
Half-wondering if he might anyway, Trio shook her head. "I'll get in contact with him soon. I think I'll have to... I'm going to want to check up and make sure Keelan's safe and sound." She lingered another moment, then hesitantly took a step back. "I'll see you soon, I'm sure."
The satyr smiled and waved gently. "Take care, Trio. Annora looks happy and healthy," he added, flashing her a playful grin. With that he turned and walked inside, wondering how the centaur the little pixa were doing.

The sand under Trio's shoes squeaked slightly as she made her way to Envy's office. She'd stopped at the Nereid pools after a bit more shopping, unable to resist the pull of seeing one of her dearest friends. "Envy?" she called, grateful Annora was awake and aware, already making grabby-hands toward the water. "Later, little one. You'll get to meet my friends here soon, don't worry."
The incubus was perched on his desk, adding the push of his tail to steady his on toes feet. A broom extended from his outstretched arm and disappeated into the rafters. "I'm NOT kidding this time Tabris. The next time I walk in to find my desk looking like a reject from the Rose Bowl Parade I'm getting myself a pet that eats spiders." He turned at the sound of his name and the annoyed expression melted away instantly. "Trio? TRIO!" Envy jumped from the desk and almost landed on his friend but saw the new little one clinging to her. "Damn... I haven't seen you since you and Schu started working things out. How have you been? And who's this little one with you?"
Trio grinned, reaching to hug Envy around Annora before lifting her out of her carrier. "Envy... I've missed you! I've been wanting you to meet Annora Lyris... she came to stay with me not long before Schu and I started... well... working things out." She blushed prettily as she spoke, then glanced aorund the floor. "Is it okay if she crawls for a bit? She's been cooped up in the carrier all day."
"Of course," Envy nodded and gathered a stack of magazines off the floor. "The only danger in here is that she'll crawl out from under the desk covered in flowers and streamers."
"I bet she'd love that," Trio snickered, setting her down and watching as she immediately started looking around in curiosity. Now able to give Envy a real hug, she did just that, her arms wrapping tightly around the demon as she snuggled close. "You need to drag your sorry butt over more, you know that? I've missed you!"
Envy resisted the urge to purr but did return the nuzzling to Trio's hair. "I thought you guys could use some space without a freeloader camping out on your sofa. You look good. So that means I don't have add Schu to the list of people I'm going to hunt down someday when these girls finally drive me insane," he shouted out the window towards the pools.
Trio laughed even as Annora caught sight of a little shiny in one corner and started toward it. "No worries. Things are... really good these days." Rising on tiptoe, she brushed her lips against Envy's lightly, then moved to check what Annora was crawling toward before nodding and moving to the nearby couch as Annora got distracted by a magazine.
Envy rubbed his lips together then sprinted across the room. "Ohhh.. not that magazine, little one." Envy folded up the magazine and shoved it under some papers on his desk. "Here we go. This one is a bit more friendly," he smirked and handed Annora something less racy to look at."
Trio blinked, then laughed, moving to slip even that magazine from her hands before Annora could do much to it. "Give me a moment to get a toy for her, okay? If she plays with your magazines, she'll rip them to shreds. Grab her while I find something?" she asked, setting the bag down and rummaging through it.
Envy scooped the little changeling up and began to give her his first really good look over. He turned her to and fro, generating a few giggles as he spun Annora. "Wow... she reminds me of the Nereids a lot meiyuu. Where did she come from?"
"There's a small place not too far away. The owner gave me a harp." Trio finally snagged one of the music sprockets, letting it float over to Annora. The tiny girl immediately reached for it, dragging it to her mouth where she teethed while it chimed a soft music-box style song. "She needed a new home... a Gaian home."
"Well I bet Raighne, Ulare and the others will love you, little one," Envy laughed and gave the little girl a toss in the air.
Annora squealed loudly at that, her voice sharp and piercing. Trio, by now somewhat used to the sound, grinned with a wince. "She sounds happy," she muttered, setting the bag down and moving to stand by Envy. "Wanna take her out to see the others?"
"Sure!" Envy tucked Annora under his arm like a plushie and too a step for the door. "I believe our girls are out sunning themselves near the hatching pools." Annora babbled at Envy, waving her arms and legs wildly as he carried her off. Trio followed behind, her eyes focused solely on the baby even as she answered. "I'd love for Ulare and Raighne to meet her. They're so good with kids." Before Envy could get more than a couple of steps, though, an oddly triangular oblject seeming to be composed of metal and gemstones, darted down to hover before his face. "Envy Fairchylde. Demon - Incubus. Correct?" Trinity demanded mechanically.
Envy startled a few steps back, his wings and tail flairing out in alarm. "Umm... yeah. Last time I checked."
"Trinity!" Trio snapped, and the fandangle darted back a few feet, orbs twirling. "Apologize. Envy doesn't need you right in his face," she added, hands on her hips as she glared at the mechanical familiar. "I apologize," Trinity said, sounding every bit the contrite little boy as he floated forward slowly, about half-foot lower than before. "I didn't mean to upset you." Annora was busy squirming, trying to get free of the constrictive hold the demon had her in as she watched Trinity.
"S'ok," Envy waved dismissively with his free hand. He took a step closer and peered at Trinity curiously. "Was just startled is all. Although I shouldn't be I guess. I have a spider in my office that likes to do the same sometimes. Another new addition," Envy peered over his shoulder at Trio.
"Another," Trio nodded, blushing brightly as one hand came up to scratch at the back of her head. "Envy, meet Trinity. He's already proven he knows who you are." Trinity reached out an orb to touch Envy's hand, then floated up when Annora tried to grab it. "Sankouri's around here somewhere, too," the blonde added, moving to take Annora and settle her against her hip, then grasp Envy's hand.
Envy gave Trio's hand a squeeze as they started walking again. "Well it's nice to meet you Trinity. Although given it's the first time we've met I have to wonder what kind of stories you've been told about me."
"All the good ones I'm sure," a melodious voice called out ahead of them.
Trio laughed, turning to wave to Raighne as Annora scrabbled to be out of Trio's arms, wanting to crawl toward the pretty voice she heard. "Hi, Raighne! Got someone here for you to meet," Trio called, giving in and setting the baby on the sand before Annora could make her lose her grip.
"Oh?" The dark skinned Nereid slipped off the rock and vanished into the lagoon waters. She reappeared in the surf and used the waves to beach herself in the wet sand. Her eyes widened as she caught sight of Annora. "Gods.... well hello there little, fae-child."
Annora's answer was incomprehensible, but she made her fast little way toward the Nereid with apparent eagerness. It was likely now that she wasn't attracted solely by Raighne's beautiful voice, but as well by the shiny, glittering scales on Raighne's tail. From farther out to sea, a golden head popped out of the water. "Raighne? What's going on?"
"Your Trio has brought us someone very interesting," Raighne rolled to her side, allowing her lover to see the little one so fascinated with her tail.
"Is that...?" Ulare asked, swimming closer without beaching herself. "She's beautiful!"
"She most certainly is," Raighned nodded. "She's the first I've seen in... well more years than I'd care to admit. Did she come to you in an artifact?" she asked curiously and peered up at Trio.
"No in, precisely," Trio said, toeing off her shoes and moving closer. "More like attracted by. Jaden said that she needed a non-fey guardian," she explained, as Ulare grinned.
"Bring her here, lover," the blonde Nereid called, wanting to examine the siren at closer range.
"May I?" Raighne asked even as she awkwardly began to turn herself back towards the water.
Annora solved the answer for her, squirming free and splashing awkwardly toward Ulare in glee. Trio blanched at the sight, darting forward to try to rescue the child from drowning without thought.
Envy caught Trio before she got to the water and wrapped his lean arms around her waist tightly. "Wait meiyuu.... Just watch. Raighne and Ulare won't let anything happen to her." Raighne was a bit slower than Annora but finally she pulled herself back into the pools. She floated beside Annora and held out an arm. "Would you like to meet my love, little one?"
Annora squealed and giggled, splashing toward Raighne and crowing an ear-splitting cry when she caught Raighne's hand. Trio fought Envy's grip for a moment, then froze when she realized that not only was Annora not sinking, she seemed perfectly fine - happier than she'd been in ages. "What...?" she whispered softly. "How...?"
"I think she more than resembles the Nereids, meiyuu," Envy whispered and loosened his grip slowly. "I think she's just as aquatic as they are."
"I knew she liked the water," Trio admitted quietly, recalling times she'd bathe Annora and keep her in the bath for far longer than necessary just because the child seemed so happy to be there. "But..." Ulare swam closer, reaching out to touch Annora's cheek lightly. "She's beautiful, isn't she?" she murmured to Raighne, swelling as proudly as though SHE were somehow responsible.
"Looks like we'll be seeing more of you around then," Envy smirked and pulled Trio back into the sand with him. Raighne smirked at their guardians then turned her full attnetion back to the little one on her arm. "Yes she is. It's a trait of her all her ken. Much the same way that all your daughters are as striking as you."
"And as you," Ulare pointed out, gathering Annora up for a moment before the little girl proved that being held yet AGAIN was the very last thing she wanted. She splashed free with a giggle, dropping below the surface and looking around curiously.
Raighne winked at Ulare and vanished under the water with Annora. "It's nice seeing someone this small," she pointed out. "Our young are never like this."
Ulare nodded, diving below the surface as well. "I know. Remember Kaayn and Shaolang. I always kinda wished we might see one of our own so small." She reached out, petting one fin lightly. "But we have to stay in the shells for a reason, of course." On land, Trio tensed as all three disappeared, gripping Envy's hand tightly. "They won't let anything happen to her," she repeated, eyes riveted on the water. Trinity, seeing his Bonded's state, moved closer, keeping careful watch on Annora from above the waves.
"Yes," Raighne smiled. "Kaayn was about this size when Envy first brought her to us. I bet she would make a wonderful playmate for this little one. Would you like that Annora?"
Annora was busy watching the way the sunlight glittered from under the waves. She clapped and giggled, and Ulare snickered. "Sounds like a 'yes' to me."
Scooping up the little girl, Ulare tucked her close, then twisted to peer at Raighne. "Coming?" she asked her lover, catching one hand before moving to head off.
"Of course," Raighne winked and dove under, putting Ulare and Annora with her. "I think Quellious took Kaayn to the rocks near the Deep today. I told her to stop that since the Drow appeared but you know her... that calm, knowing stare. Hard to believe she and Veeshan are siblings."
Ulare nodded, shaking her head. "I'm sure she'll protect Kaayn, though. She's surprisingly strong."
"She gets that from you, lover," Raighne glanced down and watched Annora giggling and kicking along next to Ulare. "She's quite the little swimmer."
"It's in her blood," Ulare nodded, grinning. "Although I didn't expect her to do quite so well without a tail!"
"True," Raighne nodded. "I wonder what else is in her blood? Do you suppose she has the voice?"
Ulare paused, blinking and turning to peer at Raighne. "If she does... I feel for Trio," she murmured, with feeling.
"Well if she does... let's make sure she doesn't start listening to that loud screeching Envy calls music," Raighne laughed as a soft, melodious sound began to vibrate through the water.
Ulare giggled, nodding and glancing to Annora. The tiny girl had clearly already heard the music, her paddling ceasing as her tiny eyes bugged out.
Raighne paused as well and smiled at the small siren. "Do you like the song, little one?"
A string of quiet babble came from the baby's lips, almost as though Annora had actually answered Raighne. And then she scrambled forward as fast as she could, eager to find the song.
Kaayn was applauding loudly and trying to sing along, but her young voice didn't have the volume or range of the Nereid seated beside her on the rock. Quellious' eyes were closed as she continued to sing a ballad that she had written based on one of Arioso's stories.
Ulare swam beside Annora, watching the girl make her way to Quellious' tail. Two tiny hands caught the tailfin, holding tight as Annora swayed to the music.
Quellious stared down curiously at the new arrival but didn't miss a beat of her song. Kaayn giggled and slid into the water with Annora and caught hold of the other side of the Nereid's tail.
Annora didn't fight to be heard over the song, instead listening in rapt fascination to the music as she continued to sway. She didn't seem to notice Kaayn, or Raighne or Ulare, her entire focus solely on Quellious.
Quellious smiled and continued to sing in a wide array of pitches and rhythms until her voice finally trailed off, to Kaayn's cheering and splashing applause.
Annora, however, waited until the last note had died out, then finally lifted her arms, wanting to be held as she fussed lightly.
"Easy there," Quellious whispered, even her soft speaking voice echoed of music. "You're a new face here and we must greet you properly," she smiled and slid Annora up here tail. "I am Quellious. And this is Kaayn." The little Reju giggled and nodded her head, rosy eyes shimmering. "Hello."
Incomprehensible babble met their words, Annora tucking herself against Quellious contentedly as her eyes drifted shut. "I think she likes you, Daughter," Ulare smiled, eyes sparkling in pride.

Trio's house looked more or less untouched... but for the fenced-off area in the side yard where there stood a nice, shallow hole in the ground, long and winding, and lined with cement. There were some stones nearby, forming an odd little pyramid that hinted that they were likely to be rearranged later. The whole deal looked like it wound around a good portion of the yard, making it very long, though still shallow. And no one - NO ONE - was in the side yard, though Shiro could hear the usual raucous coming from inside and behind the house.
"...Trio?" Shiromaru leaned over the fence curiously to peer into the shallow hole, then edged around it with his head slightly tilted thoughtfully. That was decidedly new. He finally bypassed the hole and padded up to the front door, knocking on it lightly.
As usual, it was the angel who answered the door, oven mitts on and one hand holding a tray of cookies that still steamed. "Shiromaru," he said in surprise, smiling slightly and nodding. "Looking for Trio?" His words were cut short as a piercing squeal cut through the house, and he sighed, shaking his head. "Looking for Trio?" he tried again, when the noise had stopped.
Shiro blinked, then nodded slightly, looking up in the direction of the noise. "Yes, I am... is everything okay in here? What's going on?"
"That'd be Annora. You... haven't met her yet, I think?" Az noted, looking bemused. A moment later, his expression turned to misery as the squeal lit up again, higher and angrier than before. It lasted longer, too, but finally died down to background noise. "A chorus of angels, she is not."
"What, a colicky baby?" Shiromaru asked, stepping inside. "She sounds really upset about something. But can I see Trio? It's been a while... And can you tell me more about Annora?" The water demon tugged his long braid up into a bun at the top of his head. If he was going to be around a cranky baby, he was not going to leave his hair down.
"Best to meet her yourself," Az said, waving Shiromaru toward the kitchen. "But before you go find Trio, you might want ot put in some earplugs..."
Shiro nodded, glancing towards the angel. "...Ah. Do you have a spare set? Considering I rather left mine at home."
This time, when the squeal came, it was more of a giggle. "I've invested in them. Come, let me show you where they're kept." Az set the tray of cookies down, then turned to a canister in the kitchen, opening it to reveal a couple dozen packs of disposable ear plugs. He fished out a pack, handing it to Shiromaru. "There you are. Good luck," he said brightly, as he turned to tend to his cookies.
"Oh, that's so encouraging," Shiro mumbled, then put the earplugs into his ears and crept off to where he heard the giggling coming from. "Trio? Are you around?"
"In here," Trio called out distractedly. When Shiro rounded the corner into the room, he found Trio sitting on the floor, a towel spread and a naked infant laying on the towel. Beside Trio was a huge mixing bowl of water that she kept dipping her hand into and then sprinkling over the giggling child.
Shiro chuckled faintly, then padded over to sit on the floor next to Trio and the infant. "Is this Annora?" he asked, curiously, looking down at the girl.
Trio glanced up, and grinned when she realized it was Shiro she'd been hearing over Annora's giggles. "This is her." She leaned toward him even as she sprinkled more water on the baby, and brushed a kiss of greeting against his cheek. "Isn't she beautiful?" The pride in her voice was unmistakeable.
"Is this bathtime," Shiro asked curiously, "or does she just like water?" He grinned at the kiss, then kissed her cheek in return before reaching down to tickle Annora's belly lightly. "What a cutie." Loud, but cute.
"Likes water? She LIVES for it, I've discovered," Trio snorted, forgetting for a moment just who she was talking to. "She's not happy unless there's water nearby. And she prefers to be in it. If I hadn't found out she could breathe in water, things would be a whole hell of a lot messier."
Shiromaru raised an eyebrow, then grinned and reached down, holding his hand cupped over Annora. Water started to shower down lightly, almost a fine, localized mist. "She and I will get along, I think."
Annora cooed softly, waving her hands back and forth in utter delight. Trio, grateful for the rest, leaned back, her eyes soft. "I'd forgotten you do that," she murmured, humor in her voice. "I think the two of you will get along perfectly. I'm told she's a siren..."
"That would explain a lot." Shiromaru kept up the mist, willing to spell Trio for a little while. "No wonder Az is keeping a supply of ear plugs handy. Can I hold her?"
"Of course," Trio nodded, grinning. "She likes being held almost as much as she likes water. And attention." She chuckled a bit. "I'm putting together a pool in the side yard for her. I just need to fill it up, but it's been so crazy around here lately..."
Shiro eyeballed Trio. "Why haven't you called me? I can fix that easy. C'mon, lil' girl, let your Uncle Shiro hold you," he said to Annora gently, lifting her up into his arms while keeping that mist in a field around her. "Trio, let me go fill that pool for you, it'll only take a few moments."
Trio blinked, staring at Shiro oddly. "But... it's BIG. Not deep, but very long. It's oging to take a lot of water, Shiro," she protested. Annora grabbed fistfuls of shirt, snuggling closer to the water demon and cooing up at him in a softly-musical voice. Her indigo eyes opened wide in what could've been considered a coy expression, had she not been just an infant.
"So? I filled the nereids' pool myself." Shiro cuddled Annora carefully, very lightly bouncing her. "It's really simple, it's just a matter of manipulating the molecules in the air to get them to form different compounds, then converting them into water. It's just a bigger version of what I'm doing right here, as a matter of fact."
Trio blinked at the thought, then slowly nodded, smiling. "Are you sure you don't mind?" she asked, reaching out to brush her hand against Annora's head.
Shiromaru stood, nodding towards the door. "I'm more than sure I don't mind. I wouldn't offer if I minded. Besides, if it'll make her happy and give you a bit of a rest, I'll be glad to do it."
"She'll be ecstatic," Trio said, sighing with feeling. She rose, following Shiromaru out. "You have no idea how happy it'll make her to be able to go splash in the water whenever she wants..."
"I think I have a clue, actually," Shiro informed Trio with a playful wink. "You should have seen me as a child. I once got myself completely encased in ice and it took me almost a day to figure out how to get out of it again." Once he was outside and standing by the shallow pool, he offered Annora back to Trio.
Trio took her with the ease of long familiarity, stepping back a bit to give Shiro room. "I suppose you would. But you probably don't know how happy it'll make ME, do you?" she teased softly.
Shiromaru just grinned at her, eyes dancing, then he held his hands out and concentrated. He had to be careful, since there was so much to convert, but slowly and steadily the pool started to fill up with water.
It was long - there was really a surprising amount of water in the pool, for being so shallow. And pretty much as soon as Annora started to notice the pool filling, she squealed sharply, scrabbling toward it.
"Almost done, Annora," Shiro offered gently, a faint smile on his lips as the water level finally rose to the edge of the pool. "There we go."
Trio set Annora down in the water, watching carefully as the child crawled along the smooth surface at the bottom. Occasionally, she'd dip her head into the water, and Trio would always start a bit, even though Shiro could easily see that the child had no problem breathing in it. "Thank you, Shiro," Trio finally said softly, her eyes warm as she turned to him. "I really appreciate this."
With a warm smile, Shiro wound his arms around Trio's waist from behind and plunked his chin down atop her head. "No problem. I'm glad to help. And she looks positively thrilled," he added, finding himself grinning happily.
Trio chuckled, nestling back against Shiro as her arms came up to rest against his. "She is. I spent so long keeping her out of the water except for baths because I didn't really understand. But now I do, and I'm so glad that she's got a place to play... and an uncle who'll love to play WITH her," she added, shifting her head so that their eyes met. She chuckled, then pulled away enough to curl up on the grass as she kept an eye on Annora, taking off her shoes and letting her feet dangle in the water. Glancing up, she waved Shiro to follow suit. "I'm glad you're here."

Trio unpacked the last of the items from her car, turning to watch as Shiro cuddled Annora. The child had taken an intense liking to him nearly immediately - she cooed and giggled just for him, acting her very sweetest. Trio reasoned that it probably didn't hurt that Shiro seemed perfectly willing to shower her with water whenever she wanted it. "You're going to spoil her that way, you know," she called out, waving the two of them over and handing the picnic basket to Shiro. She took the bag of sunscreen, towels and sundries, then glanced back at him. "Let's go find some sand we can claim, hmm?"
"I love spoiling her," Shiro retorted, grinning down at Annora. He was completely entranced with the infant in turn, and loved to hold her whenever he had a chance to. "There's a good spot over there," he added, heading towards one likely-looking empty patch not too far away, where the high tide was lapping at the sand.
Trio nodded, following him there. "Yeah, but keep it up too much, and I'm gonna send her to live at YOUR house," Trio mock-threatened, amusement in her voice. Annora seemed unaware of the threat, but with all that water not too far away, she was fighting Shiro's hold, throwing herself bodily against his arms in an attempt to break free. Trio, on the other hand, either didn't notice or was used to such behavior, because she didn't react as she passed them up and moved to set the bag down.
Shiromaru kept a firm hold of Annora, waiting for his heart to start beating again, since panic had stopped it for a moment. "Does she always do this?" he asked of Trio, eyes wide, then glanced down at Annora. "Easy, easy. You'll get to play in the water soon enough, just be patient." He followed Trio to the spot, then kicked off his sandles. "I'm going to go sit down with her in the water before she launches herself out of my arms, okay?"
Trio snickered, nodding. "Any time she sees water," she noted, stripping off her shirt to reveal a shimmery blue one-piece swimsuit beneath. "You'll get used to it, don't worry." She stripped off her pants as well, grateful she'd applied sunblock before leaving the house, and moved to set up a blanket and some towels. "Just don't let her out of your sight, okay? She's little, but I've got a sneaking suspicion she can already swim pretty well."
"I have no doubts," Shiro agreed. He had no worries about getting his swim trunks and his t-shirt wet -- he was able to dry them swiftly, after all. He settled down in the water, sitting in the shallows, then put Annora in his lap before he peeled off his t-shirt. "There we go, Annora! How's this for being in the water?"
Annora squealed gleefully, the sound piercing. Trio winced, then finished setting everything up and followed Shiro into the water. She'd left Sankouri behind - the ice zurui HATED a summer's day on the beach. "I think she likes you," she teased Shiro, even as Annora brought her hands down in a huge splash.
Shiromaru grinned, then splashed Annora in return, letting a wall of water wash up over the girl. "We're two of a kind, her and I. Should we go swimming? Since she breathes underwater, I want to show her what it's like out a bit further."
Trio watched the two fondly, leaning back on her arms. "I'll stay where I am, thanks," she muttered. "Just have her back before lunchtime?"
"Of course!" Shiro picked up Annora again, then padded out deeper into the water, drawing Annora along with him once the water was high enough. "Do you want to go diving?" he asked the girl, grinning at her, then ducked below the water, keeping Annora close to his chest.
Annora burbled, taking to the water gleefully. She seemed even more at ease in the salty water, a thin film covering her eyes as she squirmed against Shiro, wanting to be free to explore.
Shiro didn't let Annora roam about until they were down near the bottom, within reach of the sand. He gently let Annora go, though he kept a hand touching her back so he knew where she was at all times. With his free hand, he picked up a smooth black rock, showing it to her.
Annora beamed, reaching out for the rock and catching it to examine more closely. She was completely at home in the water, her eyes bright and wide as she looked around.
Grinning, Shiromaru let Annora look around, following after her happily. There were fish all around them, and the floor of the ocean was littered with rocks and other interesting things.
Annora's attention span was like any child's - the moment something new and shiny caught her eye, she wandered off after it, sometimes heading toward the shore, sometimes away from it. She seemed to have some instinct for what might be dangerous to her, shying away from fish Shiro knew were poisonous.
Spotting that, Shiromaru started to relax, finally taking his hand off Annora's back and just watching her instead. He couldn't help but grin. It would be even more fun when Annora was old enough that they could really talk about everything under the water.
At length, she began to yawn a bit, fussing quietly under the waves as she started to really tire out.
Before she could get too badly off, she turned to him, looking up with deep indigo eyes that seemed to plead for comfort and rest. One hand lifted toward him, the other clinging to the last shell she'd held.
Willingly, Shiro pulled her to him, cuddling her against his chest as he swam to the surface, then to shore. Once his feet hit sand, he padded over to Trio, grinning at her. "We had fun down there. You should come with us next time."
"I can't breathe the way you two do," Trio returned, holding out her arms for Annora. As soon as she did, Annora was fighting Shiro's hold on her, demanding 'mama' sulkily. "Someone sounds tired," Trio said, her voice a soft sing-song.
"That's why you use scuba gear." Laughing softly, Shiro handed Annora to Trio, watching her fondly. "She tired herself out."
"Small wonder - she has a whole world to explore down there, don't you, sweetie?" she asked Annora, her eyes soft. Annora fussed more, until Trio finally looked up at Shiro. "Can you get the food? I wanna try to calm her down," she said, moving to part of the blanket and stretching out on it, Annora pillowed against her chest. As Annora continued to fuss, Trio didn't wait for an answer - Shiro could just make out the sound of her singing softly to Annora.
Shiromaru just stood and listened for a few moments, smiling slowly, then got the picnic basket and opened it, starting to unpack it onto the towel. "You sing very well," he offered to Trio, grinning at her.
Trio waited until Annora was asleep, then carefully laid her down under some makeshift shade before turning to stick her tongue out at him. "Liar."
"Would I lie to you?" Shiro countered, then flicked water towards her playfully before setting the paper plates and plastic flatware down.
Trio spluttered softly, shaking the water free before moving to sit down near him. "She brought this up with her," she said, holding out what looked to be a simple spiral shell. But when she turned the opening toward Shiro, he could see the crab nestled deep within.

Shiro blinked, then held his hand out for the crab. "Seems she picked up a pet. Are you going to keep it?"
Trio shook her head. "Not this one. Poor guy needs to go back where he belongs, don't you think?" she said, handing the crab over to Shiro. "I was thinking maybe while we're this way, we can stop by the pet store. They usually carry land hermit crabs. I can pick one of those up for her," she suggested.
"I'll go take this little guy back to the water, then," Shiro offered, getting to his feet. "She'd probably love a crab of her own. You might want to take her out to see dolphins at some point, once she's older."
Trio nodded. "Definitely. Something tells me I'll be learning a lot about the sea before this is through," she added. Reaching for a plate, she watched him set the crab in the water, then grinned as he moved back. "I'm glad she's got you to look up to. I... was a bit worried."
Shiromaru watched the crab scuttle off, then sat down next to Trio again. "Why didn't you call me to begin with?" he asked curiously. "And I'll come over whenever you want me to."
"She's a siren. You know that, right?" Trio asked, leaning against him as she ate.
"You mentioned that to me." Shiro wound an arm around her shoulders companionably.
Trio nodded, nibbling on a sandwich before continuing. "When Keelan met her and figured out what she was, he freaked. Uh... Keelan's a centaur friend of ours," she added in explanation. "Anyway, he freaked - told me how dangerous she was, how evil sirens could be." Thoughtful eyes turned toward Shiro. "I don't want that for her."
Shiro sighed, then stole a sandwich for himself. "You needn't worry about that with me. Or any of my crew. It doesn't matter that she's a siren." He looked down at Trio, then nibbled at his sandwich absently.
"Actually... that's not why I'm bringing this up. I want your help with something," Trio said, the worry in her eyes fading into determination.
"Oh?" Shiro peered at Trio again, curiously. "What's up?"
"I want you to help her NOT be evil," Trio said firmly. "I want to guide her toward being good."
Shiro nodded, hugging her gently with that arm around her shoulders. "I will. I promise."
Trio smiled, hugging him back before resting quietly against him. "Thank you. I know you'll be good for her..."
"Just like you're good for her." Shiromaru kissed her hair lightly, then just ate his sandwich in silence, a faint smile on his lips.
"Penny?" Trio asked, as the silence stretched on. Once she was done with her sandwich, she moved away from Shiro, retrieving Annora's bottle and going to wake the sleeping child.
Shiro hesitated, then looked down at Trio sheepishly. "Just wishing I had one of my own, to be honest," he confessed. "I've wanted a baby for a while."
Trio blinked, then turned, looking at him thoughtfully for several long minutes as Annora gobbled her fill. "You'd make a good father," she finally proclaimed softly, a fond smile on her face.
"I don't know that I'll get a chance, though," Shiro murmured, "so I'll just try to be a good uncle to Annora."
Trio hesitated, then leaned in, resting her forehead against his. "You'll get your chance, dearheart. You know I'll help, somehow."
Shiro smiled up at her, chuckling. "I can only hope. It'd be nice if I could, though."
"It's crazy," she warned, then shifted to sit down, eyes immediately moving to Annora.
"I don't mind," Shiro returned. "I'm used to 'crazy' as it is, it's normal for me."
Trio giggled, nodding. Once Annora was done with the bottle, she got deposited into Shiro's arms before Trio turned to pack up the food. "Why don't the two of you go shelling? She needs some pretties to decorate her pool at home, right?" she teased.
"I can take a hint." Shiro grinned, cuddling Annora as he started off down the beach. "Come on, Miss Annora. Let's get you some pretty shells for your pool."
Trio laughed, watching the two as they wandered off. The fondness in her gaze turned thoughtful as they got out of sight. "...Wonder whether he'll ever really understand why I asked him," she muttered to herself, as she went about picking up their garbage. Annora nestled sleepily in Shiro's arms, comfortably full and half-dozy, until a white shell caught her eye. Once more, she attempted to throw herself bodily out of his arms, aiming for the pretty bit of pale on the ground.
Shiromaru knelt on the sand, reaching for the shell and offering it to Annora. "Here you are, sweetheart. Is this the one you were looking for?"
Annora grabbed it with both hands, squeezing tight and staring at it for several minutes before squealing in delight and bringing it up to gnaw on.
"No, sweetie, don't use that to gnaw on. But you can hold on to it." Shiro tugged lightly at the shell to keep it out of her mouth. "Here's another shell to look at." He handed another one to her that looked quite pearly.
That earned another delighted squeal, Annora taking the new shell. The old one fell onto her belly, laying there as she turned the new one this way and that before beaming up at Shiro.
Shiro laughed with her, then winked and turned the shell about, pointing his finger at it. It suddenly turned into a miniature fountain, water spraying up out of the opening.
Annora spluttered gleefully, reaching to wave a hand through the spray. Her attention was riveted on the water, fascinated by it.
"What do you think of that, eh?" Shiro grinned impishly, then tapped her very lightly on the nose.
Annora beamed, clapping for him before turning her attention fully to the water. One hand waved through the spray, then the other, and then she was splashing everything within a few feet with water.
Shiromaru laughed at that, then reached into the wet sand and picked up a sand dollar. "Have you ever seen one of these before?"
Annora tilted her head, falling quiet as she stared at it curiously before reaching to try to grab it.
"Pretty, isn't it?" Shiro murmured, handing the sand dollar to Annora.
Annora continued to stare at it, the other two shells forgotten on her stomach.
Shiro blinked at her, head tilting to the side. "Annora? What is it?"
Annora finally looked up at him, eyes wide and solemn for a long moment before she beamed up at him, babbling something he couldn't quite understand.
"What was that?" Shiro asked, curiously, peering down at her. "What'd you say?"
She babbled again in that liquid tongue only babies knew, clutching her prize and bouncing in his arms slightly.
Shiro just grinned, then padded back to Trio. "I think she found a new favorite toy," he offered, nodding down to the sand dollar in Annora's hands.
Trio blinked at it, smiling quietly as she reached for Annora. One hand scooped up the abandoned shells before they could fall, dropping them down atop the shirt she'd abandoned earlier. "I'll have to take those home," she said, speaking over the cheerful chatter that Annora was offering her new 'toy'. "Do you know the legend of Sand Dollars?" Though her eyes were focused solely on Annora, she lifted her head a bit, and increased her volume just noticably enough to include Shiromaru.
"I don't," Shiromaru murmured, watching Trio with Annora. "I don't really know any of the human legends. What is it?" He was curious, and wanted to hear.
"It's said," Trio started, then fell quiet, eyeing Shiro with faint nervousness. "It's... um... rather... are you sure you wanna hear it?" she finally asked, not going into details.
"Tell me," came the soft urging as Shiro touched her shoulder gently. "I want to hear. Please."
"It's just... it's about Jesus," Trio finally explained, watching Annora rather than meeting Shiro's eyes. She'd never really instigated any sort of talk on the subject before, far too cautious both of her friend's origin and her own belief-questioning.
Shiro blinked, head tilted to the side, then he squeezed her shoulder gently. "I still want to hear."
Trio nodded, finally looking up for a moment before shifting Annora in her arms and moving to let Shiro stand slightly behind her, peering over her shoulder. "Well, the legend goes that the sand dollar tells the story of Jesus in symbols." Urging Annora to turn the sand dollar up so that the top faced them, she reached out a finger to trace the star. "See that? It's supposed to be the Star of Bethlehem, which shone on Jesus when he was born. And if you look here," she added, tracing another outline, "this looks a lot like an Easter Lily - Easter, of course, being when he died." She then ticked off the four small holes and one large one that were found on the edge of the sand dollar. "These represent his wounds. The smaller ones are the nail-wounds he suffered, and the larger is the wound he suffered from the spear." Turning it over, she traced out another floral outline. "This is a poinsettia, the Christmas Flower. And when you break the dollar open," she added, miming breaking it without really doing so. "Then you'll find five white doves ready to fly off and tell the world the story all over again."
"That's a beautiful legend," Shiro murmured, reaching down to touch the star, his arm around Trio's waist. "And I can see all the things you pointed out. Will you be holding on to the sand dollar, then, for Annora?"
Trio nodded slowly, relaxing a bit as Shiro voiced his approval. "Yeah. If I can, I'll get another one to break open, and make her a shadowbox or something about it," she said slowly, plainly thinking things out as she said them. Turning her head to peer over her shoulder back at him, she smiled faintly. "What do you think?"
Shiro grinned at her, nodding slightly. "You should. I think she'd like that. Will you add anything else to it, or just the sand dollar? I could probably get another sand dollar for you."
"There's a few variations of poems about the legend. I'll probably type up one of them on some pretty paper or something," Trio said, smiling. "I'd appreciate the other dollar, if you can get one."
"I'll be right back." Shiromaru made his way back to the water's edge, starting to poke about for a sand dollar. When he found one, he brought it back to Trio.
Trio smiled, tucking both away as Annora napped in her arms. "Shiro? Thank you," she murmured, watching him for a moment before looking down at their things. "I suppose we should start packing up, hmm? Especially if we're going to shop a bit before heading home..."
Shiro nodded softly, starting to help pack up the food dishes. "You're welcome, you know," he said quietly, smiling up at her for a moment. "And it sounds like a plan to me... How far away is the shop?"
"Not too far - a couple miles up the road, as I recall. There's another shop right next to it that sometimes has some pretty trinkets. I thought I might stop in there as well and see if I could find some keepsake or other for Annora." She smiled, tilting her head as she got Annora nestled into her carseat. "Once I drop you and Annora off, I'm supposed to head back to Envy's. He said he'd give me some sand to lay in the bottom of Annora's new pool, to make it more comfortable."
"Mind if I take her to see the nereids while you're visiting with Envy?" Shiro asked, curiously, as he packed the picnic basket away in the car. "Sanshi and Eerie would love to see her, I think, and she'd be able to play in a huge, safe pool."
Trio blinked, then nodded. "That works, too. Ulare and Raighne love her." She fell silent as she contorted her body to get the carseat in place, then straightened up, watching Shiro thoughtfully. "You're very kind to her..."
Shiro shrugged, pulling his hair down from the bun he'd tucked it up into. "I love children, Trio. And how can I not adore a baby that's as addicted to the water as I am?"
"I think we're going to be lucky you live so close," she said thoughtfully, moving to get into the car. "A little older, and she'll be able to go to you whenever she needs someone to talk to."
"Well, whenever she needs her Uncle Shiro, I'll be there," Shiromaru said quietly. He pulled on his t-shirt, then stepped into his sandles -- everything was dry again -- before settling into the passenger seat. "Drive on, fair lady," he said with a playful smile and a grand gesture. "Let us be off."
Trio snorted at the compliment, her eyes sparkling. "Off we go," she returned, starting the car and turning to head toward the pet shop she knew of. It was a small shop that specialized in marine-life. There were a round dozen hermit crabs in aquariums large and small, and the moment she saw one, Annora squealed with glee. "I thought so," Trio murmured, casting a glance at Shiro.
Shiromaru just grinned, then picked up a cup with a brilliant blue and red betta in it and held it up for Annora to see. "Look at this, Annora. It's called a 'betta'. Aren't they pretty?"
Annora's eyes grew round as saucers, and she stopped squealing for the crab. Instead, she was now reaching for the cup, her eyes tracking the graceful fins as the betta floated through the water. "Brat," Trio muttered, amusement in her voice.
The water demon was the picture of innocence, and Shiro batted his golden eyes at Trio. "I don't know what you mean. I'm positively an angel." He paused a beat, then glanced up. "Ignore the horns. But I'll get the betta for her if you want me to."
Trio choked, fighting back a giggle. "Not this time, sweetie," she said, both to Annora and the demon. "Let's stick with the crab. I think a pet that Annora can touch as well as watch will be better, don't you?" With a smile, she turned back to the crabs, nuzzling Annora's head briefly when the girl started to fuss. "Do they have a book on hermit crab care?"
"Yeah, it's right here." Shiro grabbed it from a rack nearby, then leafed through it curiously, the betta cup back on the shelf.
Trio moved around behind him, standing on tiptoe to read over his shoulder thoughtfully. It wasn't long before she was headed to the right fishbowl for the crab, and from there, to all the necessary accoutrements that would help keep the crab healthy and happy. When the shopping was done, she eyed the pile on the counter, and chuckled ruefully. "Okay... maybe you AREN'T the only one spoiling her..."
"That's what being a parent's all about," Shiro singsonged, and put the book down on the counter as well. "Well, that and the midnight diaper changes, the feedings, the burping, the spitting up, the crying, the tantrums, and those occasional moments of peace -- usually while they're sleeping -- where you realize it's all worth it." He winked at Trio, then leaned against the counter.
Trio laughed, sticking her tongue out at Shiro again. Annora, watching the two, paused a beat before sticking HER tongue out at Shiro as well, imitating Trio. The move caught Trio by surprise, and she stared owlishly at Annora for several seconds before bursting into laughter.
Shiromaru just blinked at Annora, then grinned impishly, reaching out to tickle her tummy. "You little monkey! We'll have to be careful around you, I see!"
"Already," Trio moaned softly, shaking her head and handing Annora off to Shiro so that she could pay the bill more easily before gathering everything up into the fishbowl she'd purchased and carrying it toward the door. "Lemme just look at the trinkets next door, and then we'll head over to the Nereid pools, okay?"
"Oh, we don't have to go to the main pools," Shiro noted, carrying Annora as he padded off after Trio. "Sanshi and Eerie have their own pool at my house. They like it that way. You know how Sanshi is, she's terrified of crowds."
"But I have to pick up that sand from Envy," Trio said, blinking in confusion.
Shiro shrugged. "So you drop us off at my house, swing by to see Envy, come back and get Annora, then go on home. If you want, I mean. Or we can go to the main pools, it's up to you." He smiled up at Trio, easily.
"Ooooooh," Trio said, blushing a bit as she realized her mistake. "No, dropping y'all off sounds good. That way, I won't have to worry about Annora while I'm hauling sand out to our pool. And I can stop by my place to get Dal and Levon, right?" Without waiting for an answer, she deposited the crab's supplies in the back seat, then headed to the door of the gift shop, still holding the little cardboard box the crab was in.
"Of course." Shiromaru followed after Trio again, blinking down at the crab's box for a moment before shrugging absently. "Anyone who wants to come with can come with. My place is big enough now that the renovations are finished."
"Actually, Dal and Levon were going to come with me," Trio corrected, as she made her way through the shelves of shinies. "To help me with the sand." She glanced back toward Shiro, then froze, staring at something on a shelf just beyond his head. "Hey Shiro," she asked softly, not moving forward. "What do you think of that?"

"Oh. Yeah, I guess we're both getting mixed up today." Then, of course, Trio changed subjects, and Shiro blinked, peering at Trio curiously. "What do I think of- ...Ooooh..." Freeing one arm carefully, he reached up for the musicbox, getting it down for Trio. "That is gorgeous..."
Trio moved closer, opening the box carefully and finding that, while it played no music, there was a small piece of paper inside. "This box was originally crafted at Moorgahaine's Forge and Emporium," she read aloud, tilting her head thoughtfully. "It can be used by winding, or powered with a music sprocket." She paused, glancing at Shiro oddly for a moment even as Annora reached out to run chubby fingers over the indentation in the top of the box. "This... Shiro, it looks - and sounds - almost as though it were made for her," she finally murmured.
"Want me to get it for her?" Shiro offered, watching Annora fondly. "If it's made for her, then she should have it. Besides, it's beautiful. It belongs in her room. Do you have a music sprocket?"
"Three or four, I think, not counting 'Shiki's," Trio answered wryly. "I can get it... What do you think, sweetie?" Trio's eyes turned to the little girl, but she just grinned and squealed loudly, grabbing more firmly at the box. "Okay, that's a definite yes," Trio said with a chuckle.
Shiro just grinned, bouncing Annora lightly. "Then get it for her... I don't think she'd ever forgive you if you didn't."
Trio nodded, making her way to the counter. All in all, she reflected, glancing back at Shiro and Annora, things had turned out incredibly well. They'd have to do this again sometime. Often, if Annora's happy smile was any indication. The little girl's smile spread to Trio, and she turned back, paying for the music box. She couldn't wait to get it home and see if Annora could work it.

The next few weeks were a whirlwind for Trio. It almost seemed as though the wading pool Trio had fashioned encouraged Annora to grow - Trio later remarked to Dalreidan that somewhere along the line, Annora had shot up, gaining inches and suddenly showing a remarkable penchant for learning. Annora spent more and more time each day out in the water. At first, Trio took her out for a little while every couple of hours. And if Trio couldn't watch over her that day, then Dalreidan, or Levon, or Aziraphale, or one of her other, older companions might watch over Annora. The girl crawled and splashed, then rose, taking her first wobbly steps in the wading pool. By the end of the first week, Annora was spending more than half the day in or around the pool, splashing and laughing and scrambling about - sometimes on her hands and knees as a baby might, but more and more often she'd stand upright. And as if the days couldn't be faster, Annora's teeth came in. Whenever they were bothering her, she seemed able to soothe the pain away if she were just in the water. Trio didn't know quite what to make of that - I've never heard anything about sirens HEALING in water... - but she certainly wasn't complaining. By the time the second week was done, Annora was spending pretty much her entire day outside in the side yard or with her uncle Shiromaru. She accompanied Trio to the Nereid pools any time Trio went, generally wading into the water as soon as she got there to be around her favorite aunts, Raighne, Quellious, and Ulare. Her skin was darkening, the fins on her arms and legs slowly unfolding to allow her better movement in the water. And her voice was getting stronger - Trio noticed that any time Annora babbled. Or, she began to realize, as Annora spoke. Clear words were coming through more and more often, generally in a sort of singsongy-lilt that she seemed to have picked up during her visits with the Nereids.
It was sometime in the third week when Trio got out her photo album and stopped, blinking at the pictures there. Her skin had grown so much darker, the hair on her head a shimmering silver-white that matched the markings on her cheek and leg. She'd grown to nearly two feet, and water which had only come to her waist before was now dropped to about her knees. Trio frowned at that, grateful she'd at least made a creek/pool that Annora seemed to like, however little water there was in it. And Annora did love it, sometimes basking in it for hours. By the end of the third week, Trio had picked up multiple bathing suits, and found a way to connect Annora's pool to a natural water source that would keep the water in it moving. Shiromaru had, of course, helped in the last task. His reward had been a gentle hug from Trio and a tacklepounce from Annora, who'd dragged him into the water clothing and all, whether he liked it or not.
At the beginning of the fourth week, Annora discovered she had some new companions - two fully-grown pard had taken up residence near the pool. One held back, watching with soft silver eyes as Annora played. She seemed nervous about approaching, but unwilling to let the young siren go without protection. The other had taken a more active interest in the pool, prowling around it as wine-colored wings flared. It was this second pard which nudged the first one, when Annora yawned and moved to curl up under a tree near the water for her daily nap. The first pard, all bright indigo and black wings moved forward when she was nudged, curling up under the tree and peering solemnly at Annora before one wing beckoned her closer. Annora didn't hesitate - without any reluctance, the girl nestled into the pard's side, using the larger form as a cushion and falling asleep with a trusting smile on her face. Trio, who knew the shy pard for a kind creature, just watched, nodding quietly to herself. There was a friendship waiting to be formed there. Perhaps Annora would be good for Psaltria.
Claret took the opportunity then to approach Trio. Unlike other pards, Claret had come to Trio's home fully-grown, and knowledgable. The pard could speak, and she waited until both Annora and Psaltria were asleep before murmuring quietly to Trio. "I can help you deepen the water. I can shape and move stone and earth." Trio stared at the suggestion, starting to open her mouth before Claret continued. "But... I will only do it for a price. Consider that. When you've decided what to do, come see me." And the pard padded off without allowing Trio to speak.
A price..., Trio thought, tilting her head and watching Annora. As Dalreidan came to spell her for a while, letting Trio get some rest from Annora, the thought lingered in her mind, tempting.
((OOC - I got permission from Jaden to do a gloss-over of Annora's growth, so that the actual growth felt a bit less abrupt and a bit more (to me) natural.))

Trio held the tiny hand in hers tightly. It had taken quite a bit of determination to part Annora from the waters that so held her attention, but Trio wanted to make another visit to town again, and along the way, she'd decided that in addition to the clothes shopping she wanted to do for Annora, it would be nice to stop in at the Changelings shop and say hello to Jaden. He was, after all, the reason for the tiny girl at her side.
Annora was walking much better now - she still had her clumsy moments, and had a tendency to trip over her own two feet if she got overly excited, but she'd learned to walk fairly quickly. Although Trio had to laugh at the way she shifted from foot to foot in a little dance any time she wore shoes. Even sandals seemed too much for her, and those were the shoes Trio had managed to coax onto her feet today.
There were two others by their sides - Sankouri padded along Trio's side, silent as always and watchful, his green eyes sweeping ahead of them thoughtfully. But the other companion was a bright indigo pard, the large form dwarfing Annora's, but the attitude balancing her, to make her seem no larger than the Zurui opposite.
"Jaden?" Trio called out as she got close, her eyes smiling. A loud, high voice echoed hers, muddling the name slightly, though it was still recognizable, and Trio laughed, glancing down at Annora fondly.
The satyr's ears perked up as he smiled from inside the tiny cottage, setting the last of the dishes aside to dry. Talistan was constantly picking on him for handling the 'mundane' things around the house... up to and inclusing doing dishes. Still, if he didn't do them, no one would. He shook off his hands, moving towards the dutch door at the front of the house and glancing out over the open top. When he saw the pair approaching, the smile turned into a grin and he waved.
"Well hello there!" he called, arms folding as they leaned on the ledge of the lower door, the satyr's tail buzzing behind him in excitement. "And who might this lovely young lady be? Surely not Annora Lyris, she was MUCH smaller than that!"
Trio laughed, hoisting the girl up onto her hip so that Jaden could better see her. "She grew," she said proudly, eyes sparkling.
Annora stared at Jaden for several seconds, then grinned back at him. "My name's 'Nora," she pronounced proudly, pointing to her puffed out chest.
"I thought I'd bring her by for you to see, since she's changed so," Trio explained as the nearby Zurui padded around the front of the house, sniffing carefully.
Jaden reached out one hand, taking up one of Annora's and kissing the back of it lightly. "Well it's good to meet you, Annora," he said, tilting his head to the side. "My name's Jaden." He was amazed to see the girl, and that she was doing so well. This half-baked idea just might work if THIS was the result!
Annora giggled, drawing her hand back as her eyes sparkled. A moment later, she leaned forward with no regard for Trio's hold on her, peering through the open door top before looking back at Jaden. "What's in there?" she asked, eyes wide and curious, as though he might be concealing great secrets from them.
Trio caught her around the waist with one arm, obviously used to such a move by now. With a faint blush, she looked wryly at Jaden before saying, "That's his home, sweetie."
"That's 'is home," Annora repeated solemnly to Trio, making sure the blonde understood where they were.
Chuckling softly, Jaden stepped aside and opened the lower half of the door, making a sweeping bow to them. "Would you like to come in?" he asked, the man's hair falling in a tangle of braids over one shoulder with the movement.
Trio set Annora down, turning to direct the pard and Zurui to wait outside. In the time it took her to turn, the little siren had made her way up to Jaden, staring up at him for a moment before peeking around him into the house. She almost seemed to use his legs as a shield for a moment, then darted inside with a giggle.
Trio turned and smiled quietly at Jaden before following Annora with a soft 'thank you' to the satyr. "Did we catch you at a bad time?"
Annora wandered through, eyes bright and glittering as she examined the objects carefully. She seemed drawn to the sparkly items over others, shiny things that caught her childs'-attention well.
"Dishes," Trio said, wrinkling her nose. "The bane of my existence. I'm lucky I've got help around the house or they'd never get done." She did her best to keep her own eyes from wandering overly-long. That sort of attention in an adult could be considered rude, after all. And she wondered, briefly, if she'd have enough chances to visit that she'd grow used to seeing such a vast collection of things.
Finally, Annora moved back to Trio's side, catching on her pocket and tugging as she repeated, "'Scuse me. 'Scuse me." Trio glanced down as soon as she'd finished speaking, frowning at Annora.
"Sweetie," she said. "You need to wait while I'm talking. It's rude to talk over others," she explained, though her voice was much firmer than before. "What is it?"
"Egg!" Annora said, a bit subdued by the chiding but her voice determined.
Trio shook her head. "How do you ask?"
"May I please have the egg?" Annora said dutifully, and was rewarded by a small tamagotchi-like egg that she ran over to Jaden. "Lookit the egg!" she crowed, shoving it up toward his eyes.

"Unfortunately, I don't have help here. Then again, it's just the two of us, so it's not that bad." He couldn't help but catch Trio's attention wandering and was actually impressed with her restraint. "You can stare if you like," he said, grinning. "I find myself staring for hours, and I LIVE here."
As Annora caught his attention, he gasped softly and gave all of his attention to the little girl and the objet she held. "And a very pretty egg it is," he exclaimed, looking at it intently. "Do you know what it'll be when it hatches?"
Trio's blush deepened, but she held quiet, letting Jaden talk to Annora. Her eyes did wander back over the objects, a bit more comfortable now with the idea of looking. Some of them looked fascinating, and others quite boring, and she had to wonder whether they were all intended to call more changelings.
"It's a... it's a... egg," Annora said, frowning deeply as she tried to figure out the question. She shoved it into Jaden's hand, then climbed up into his lap before he could protest, squirming until she was properly settled. "It's a color blue," she added gravely.
Jaden let one arm move around her waist so that she didn't slip on his fur and nodded solemnly. "And a very lovely shade of blue it is, too," he said. "But I know something an even prettier shade of blue..."
He waited until the girl looked at him questioningly, and then pressed his finger lightly to the tip of her nose. "Annora."
Annora squealed, nose wrinkling and eyes sparkling. She reached out to tap his nose in turn, the egg forgotten in her hand. The compliment seemed to sail right over her head, but it didn't matter. She paused only a moment - just long enough for Trio to see what was about to happen and move to catch the egg as it slid out of Annora's hand, and then Annora was dancing her fingers under his chin and chanting, "Tickletickletickle!" As her chant continued, the syllables tripped over themselves until she wasn't quite sure what she was saying anymore, but that wasn't nearly as important as the actual tickling.
Laughing, the satyr fell back onto the couch, winding up with Annora sitting on his chest as hooved feet kicked at the air. "STOP!! Stopstopstopstopstopstopstop no faaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiirrrrrr!" He slid a glance at Trio then, winking conspiratorially before going back to wailing for mercy from the toddler that was trying to tickle him to death.
Annora beamed delightedly, having far too much fun with this. A few moments later, however, she stopped and demanded imperiously, "My turn! You tickle me!" Trio blinked in surprise at the declaration, but the indigo pard laying just outside the door cocked an ear toward the commotion, her tail tapping in feline contentment at the sound.
Sitting up slowly and tumbling Annora onto the couch, Jaden seemed to think for a moment. "I dunno if I can... I mean, satyrs are horrible at tickling people, we never really do it right..." Just when it seemed like he was going to do nothing at all, he pounced, tickling at the girl's sides for a few moments, before sitting back innocently as if nothing at all had happened.
The moment he pounced, even before his fingers could do more than tickle air, Annora shrieked blue murder, the sound echoing through the room. She squirmed and, shrieking a bit after he'd stopped before blinking and seeming to realize that her 'torture' had already ended. Determined to continue the game, and oblivious to the human nearby who was wincing at each shriek, she pounced on Jaden again, her fingers a little rougher when she tried to tickle him.
The moment before she would have landed on him, the satyr seemed to vanish, leaving Annora landing on nothing but empty couch cushion. Before she could realise where he'd gone, Jaden reappeared on the OTHER side of the couch, behind her, and tickled her from there before disappearing again with a snicker.
Annora paused a moment, caught between indignation at the way he'd disappeared out from under her hands and admiration at how good he was at playing this new game. Admiration won out, and she twisted, scrambling around the room as she called out. "Where you are~?"
"I arrrrrrreeee..." came the singsong voice. "Not there." This was said just as Annora tried to peek under the couch.
As she vanished around to the other side of the couch, Trio saw Jaden's head appear RIGHT next to her own, whispering softly. "Quite a set of lungs she's got. I suppose that's to be expected with a siren, after all. I recommend earplugs. Good ones." At that, he vanished again, just before Annora could turn around and see him.
Annora looked a few more places before stopping in the middle of the room, a pout on her face. "'S gone," she told Trio, staring at the blonde for all of ten seconds before her eyes lightened and she dashed outside, looking around again as though certain he must be waiting there.
Trio blinked, watching her for a moment before shaking her head and saying to the thin air, "We've already invested in them... lots of them, so that we have some for guests, too."
"It's a good move," Jaden said, reappearing on the couch as if he'd been sitting there all along. "When she gets older, I daresay I won't even be able to handle her shrieking like that. As it is, she hasn't come into her abilities JUST yet. She'll get there, though."
Trio scooted just a bit on the couch, keeping the girl in sight from the doorway for a few minutes until she saw both the Zurui and the pard pad up to hover nearby. Knowing that Annora was in good hands, and that they'd summon her if necessary, she glanced back at Jaden instead. "You mean... it's going to get worse?" she asked softly, as his answer finally clicked.
Outside, it didn't take long for Annora to abandon the game of 'chase the satyr' in favor of another game with Psaltria, chasing her down before the pard turned and chased her instead. Sankouri sat off to one side, a neutral party that Annora wouldn't run from, and therefore a safe guard.
Jaden nodded, watching the girl. "She IS a siren, after all. Their voices are legendary, even if you know little of them. I'm trusting that I didn't read you wrong...' Jaden turned to gaze at Trio then, his eyes suddenly deadly serious. "And that you're a strong enough person to turn her from the path she would have normally taken if raised in Arcadia."
Trio blinked at the sudden solemnity, drawing back just a little. She swallowed, never looking away from his eyes though she suddenly wanted to very badly. Instead, she wet her lips, then spoke up. "Not alone, I'm not." It was the truth, after all. "But... I believe that our family can. I... there are a lot of us who love her very much, Mr. Silvermoon," she added, falling back to formality in the face of his seriousness. "A lot of us."
A mock-growl rolled in from the doorway, followed swiftly by Annora's instantly-recognizable squeal of delight as Psaltria pounced her, pinning her down with gentle paws. The squeal trailed off, then started again, higher and longer as the pard began to groom Annora's hair gently. Trio watched for a moment, then looked back at Jaden. "We'll do our best. That's all any of us can promise."
Wandering in the direction she and Sayuri had a while back, Angie made her way towards the house that she'd seen that day. A tiny bundle lay cradled within her arms, carefully held onto, as if it might break if she dropped it, and indeed it might. The wrapping was a pretty blue hawaiian print blanket, one that, if someone had been to Angie's house in any particular recency, would look suspiciously like a particular material she'd had laying around for a new shirt. Beside her padded a lean little beauty, Juliet. Ang had managed to leave the rest of the horde at home, though how that came about was nothing short of a trade secret, so to speak.
It wasn't long before she reached the house, hesitating slightly at the sound of a squealing, happy little girl. Did she have the right place, or had she stumbled upon someone's home? Shy as she was, Angie's soft call might've been mistaken for the wind, though she really hoped someone would answer. "Uh... Hello... Is umm... anyone home?" Stupid question, of course someone was home. She could she a blue flash followed by furred blurs.
Attention caught by the new person, Trio looked around, oddly grateful to be free of that all-too-serious stare. Recognizing the woman almost immediately, the blonde grinned, lifting a hand in welcome. "Angie, hi!" She rose, glancing back at the couch, but Jaden had disappeared again, and this time, she found herself a little discomfited. Moving to the door, she stepped just beyond it, eyes taking in Annora and Psaltria darting back and forth again even as Sankouri abandoned the game to come sit near the door in statuesque silence. "Who's this?" Trio asked, as soon as she'd verified her own little one was just fine.
Catching sight of Trio, Angie let out a sigh of relief. A friendly face she recognised. "Hiya Trio, been a little while!" Shifting the bundle from being cradled in one arm, to the other as carefully as possible, Angie glanced around at the life running about the area. "Looks like you've been busy." The fox-girl couldn't help but chuckle as she leaned towards Trio and gently pulled back the luau floral blanket, to expose a mop of red curly hair, and a fair skinned face peering up at the world, squinting in the brighter light of the outside. "This is Dulcinea, Dulci for short." As she spoke, the young fox-girl gently brought her free hand down to rest upon the woofie's head. "And this, is Juliet, my woofie companion." Juliet glanced up at Trio with her sadly soulful eyes, although she wasn't upset in the least.
The woofie tilted her head, glancing towards the pard and zurui in curious fashion, while Dulci tried to swirm around inside her blanket. "I'm... still not altogether sure how this one came to be. I had a stick.... and it was under the tree, then not long after she appeared and the stick was gone. I'm still rather confused about it all, I think. Or maybe I understand it and just don't know how to explain it to myself so I realize I understand it." Poor Angie, off she went, a rambling about something she could have gone without saying.
Trio just chuckled, letting Angie ramble for a bit before nodding. "Annora's parents were drawn by an old harp Jaden entrusted to me," she explained, nodding back at the house as though he were still inside. And for all she knew, he was. She reached out, brushing her fingers through the mop of hair before glancing up at Angie. "Dulci's gorgeous. Congratulations." Shifting her voice a bit, she called out louder, "Annora! Come here, sweetie." And when the little girl didn't obey, the same words again, a touch sharper. That tone brought the girl wheeling about, and as she ran it seemed almost as though she were herded by the pard. Soon enough, the tiny form barreled into Trio's legs, the force strong enough to make the blonde stumble a bit. "Annora, meet Angie. Angie, this is Annora," Trio continued proudly.
Annora, however, had more pressing concerns. "Look! PUPPY!" she cried, pointing to the woofie.
Angie cocked her head, listening to Trio's explaination of Annora's existance in defined interest. So the wand had drawn Dulci's parents to it, and therefore they'd entrusted her with Dulci? Wow, that was some major trust there. She smiled as she watched Trio play with Dulci's hair, and grinned as the little blue flash headed back in their direction. Without thinking, Angie stepped back, keeping herself out of the way of Annora's barrelling form. "Thank you. I feel honored that I'm entrusted with her care.... Though there are times when I have to remind myself she's there. She's such a quiet little one, hardly fussy.... it's amazing, simply amazing..."
Bending down with Dulci still cradled carefully in her arms, Angie grinned at Annora. "Hello there Annora, I'm quite pleased to meet you!" As Annora squealed at Juliet, Angie couldn't help but laugh at the woofie's reaction. Juliet hadn't yet been exposed to the exuberance of a young active child, so hearing the word "Puppy" squealed out as she was pointed to was quite the shock to her. Tilting her head, the woofie padded a step closer to Annora, trying to figure the little girl out. Angie glanced over at the woofie, and the zurui and pard nearby and softly spoke to her companion. "Easy Juliet. Be careful with her." Turning to Trio as she stood up, Angie chuckled. "I'm not worried about Juliet being gentle, more that I don't want the others to think she's a threat. She's young still and not used to kiddos yet."
"Ahh," Trio nodded. "I was about to say. Annora's very used to all sorts - think about my house for a moment," Trio added with a laugh. "Annora was quiet, too. Well, mostly. Her voice is still developing, according to Jaden."
As Annora stepped closer to the woofie, Sankouri drew closer, sniffing at the new creature before settling right beside Annora, and well within reach to protect her should the woofie prove even the slightest bit dangerous. Annora, however, knew no such fear. She reached out, ruffling the top of the woofie's head happily before tugging on Trio's pants. "Puppy," she said again.
Angie nodded, chuckling. Indeed, Trio's home was full of odds and ends in the creature world. "That I do. Mine's starting to be as diverse these days. It's quite the chore to keep everyone fed and happy, but definately worth it." Keeping an eye on the woofie and the others, Angie couldn't help but laugh as Annora fluffed Juliet's fur around, and the soft mutter the creature gave in response. The sound wasn't malicous, just resigned. Rolling her eyes towards Sanokouri as if to ask how he dealt with it, Juliet allowed herself to be pet, and soon found herself enjoying it. "I think she'll be quite good with kids, don't you think?" Angie grinned, glad to know that Juliet wasn't going to freak out with the attention.
"Looks like it," came Trio's response, even as Annora threw her arms around the woofie's neck and hugged her. "She'll have plenty of practice, at least," she added, nodding to Dulci.
Shiromaru wandered up towards Angie and Trio. Behind him, as was becoming usual, were Murasaki, Izumi and Dakota, his zurui. "Trio! Annora! Angie! Hey there..."
Juliet sighed and leaned into Annora, not enough to knock the girl down but enough to gain the full benefit of the hug. "Mmm lets just hope Dulci is as good with her, as she will be with Dulci." Angie chuckled, knowing full well what kids can be like from time to time. "I have confidence in the two of them though, so I'm pleased. It's good to see you again though! I feared I was becoming a bit of a hermit these days. Been trying to get some things done around the house and haven't seen hardly any life beyond what lives with me."
Angie caught sight of Shiro and waved brightly with her free hand. "Hey! How's it going?" Doing her best not to shift the now sleeping Dulci in her arms, Angie grinned happily. "Yaaaay Naptime. Wish I could use a bit of that naptime myself." SHe couldn't help but giggle.
Trio glanced up at the newcomer, grinning. "Hi, Shiro," she called, waving a hand in greeting from where she stood.
Annora was not nearly so shy. With a whoop of delight, she went barrelling toward Shiro, slamming into his legs bodily. She threw her arms around him, crying out, "Shiro!" as though she didn't see him every few days or so. Sankouri stared at her for long seconds, then nodded, completely used to such behavior. Instead, he moved back to the door, curling up and simply watching from where he lay.
Trio turned her attention back to Angie even as she waved Shiro over to join them. "Yeah, if it weren't for Shiro and Dal, Annora would run me just as ragged. And that's without counting all the other things I have to do," she confided, tilting her head a little.
"Now there's my favorite little girl," Shiro announced, lifting Annora happily up into his arms. "How are you doing, sweetheart?" Setting Annora at his hip, he joined Trio and Angie, grinning at them. "Things are going fine," he offered to Angie. "Chaotic as usual, but fine." He leaned in and kissed Trio's cheek cheerfully after that.
All three zurui flopped down in a pile nearby, Izumi somehow managing to get one tailtip over her nose, one over Murasaki's and the last over Dakota's.
"I'm a girl," Annora agreed, nodding eagerly before resting her head against his shoulder. Her arms wove around his shoulders, not really doing anything to help support her weight as she watched the adults talk. After a moment, she decided to cut in, dragging Shiro's attention away from the mundane to tell him about her exciting new discovery. "That's a PUPPY," she proclaimed, waving one hand at Juliet.
Trio snickered, patting his shoulder in welcome.
Shiromaru immediately offered Annora a surprised face. "A puppy? Really? That's very interesting! Can you name off anything else for me?"
Annora looked at him in confusion for several seconds, then shrugged and leaned her head against his shoulder, her eyes sliding down to half-mast. This was comfortable, she knew, and he'd take care of her.
Trio watched the two, then glanced back inside the house, wondering where Jaden had gone. After several moments, she glanced back to Angie. "I think that's my cue to take Annora home for her nap. We've still got a fair ways to go to get there, after all. It was good to see you. Bring Dulci by sometime!" she added, turning to Shiro and holding her arms out for Annora.
Shiromaru just held on to Annora. "I'll go with you. Let me carry her?" asked he, hopefully. Really, he was hooked on his adopted niece.
Angie smiled, seeing Annora slow down and begin to look sleepy. "Yeah, I should probably head back as well. Laying Dulci down and curling up with her sounds like a good idea right about now." Waving to Shiro, Annora and Trio, the foxgirl gently patted Juliet's head and backed away towards her home. "I'll definately do that Trio! See you later, and take care of yourselves. Good to see you again Shiro!" With that, the girl turned and gently picked her way back home to her waiting bed, tired already from being up so early and having been busy all day long so far. It had been awesome to see a familiar face, and she'd learned some interested facts along the way, so it was all in all a great trip. Maybe next time she'd learn a bit more about Dulci.
Trio waved goodbye to Angie, then peered thoughtfully at Shiro for a moment before nodding. "Hand her off to me if she becomes too heavy?" she asked. Even as she said it, Psaltria came padding up beside them both.
"Lay her between my wings if she's too heavy," she corrected, peering shyly at Shiromaru before settling in beside him.
Trio blinked, then looked back at the water demon. "What she said," she murmured, pointing to the pard. It would be an awful thing to discourage their friendship. "Shall we?" she asked, a moment before turning to head off toward home.
"Bye, Angie!" Shiro called, smiling back at her, then resettled Annora in his arms. "I will," he promised to Psaltria, nodding to her. "I'll just carry her for a little while." The zurui followed after him, padding along quietly, Murasaki once again carrying Dakota as they left the area.

Finding himself gifted with Etain was one thing, Shiro mused as he held the infant with an almost reverential air. Realizing that Etain would truly stay with him, be raised by him, held by him, cared for by him... that was taking more time to sink in.
For the longest time, Shiromaru had just held Etain, entranced by the infant's sweet nature. It was the first time Shiro had ever used the rocking chair on the front deck, though Shiro had rocked Etain for hours. Once she was then fed, and burped, and changed, however, Shiro decided... it was time to go traveling.
He had to tell Trio.
Carefully wrapping Etain up in a light blanket, Shiro settled the girl into the carrypack he'd bought ages ago, her head carefully resting against a head brace as she was nestled against his chest, her wings watched to make sure they wouldn't get caught, then he unfurled his own wings and flew off towards Trio's house, his arms protectively around Etain still. When he touched down, he knocked quickly on the door, waiting impatiently for it to be opened.
Aziraphale answered, his smile as welcoming as ever as he peered at Shiro. It widened a bit when he caught sight of the bundle against Shiro's chest. "Who's this?" he asked, reaching out to pet the girl's head despite his instinctive need to withdraw from the demon.
"This is Etain," Shiromaru explained, smiling kindly at Az. "She's come to live with me now. Would you like to see her a bit better? And are Trio and Annora around?"
Aziraphale nodded, eyes sparkling. "She's lovely, Shiromaru. Trio and Annora are in the side yard, with Annora's pool. Why don't you go on out there? I'll set up the baby pen in the yard for Etain..."
Shiro beamed at Aziraphale, then started padding over to the side yard. "Isn't she beautiful? And that would be very helpful, thank you." Quickly, he headed up to Trio and Annora, grinning from ear to ear.
Annora was basking in the water, as always, her skin glistening. She was giggling, sitting there in water up to her waist as she sang 'Wheels on the Bus' with Trio, her voice surprisingly on-key.
"Tri~o, Anno~ra!" Shiro sat down next to the pool as Etain turned her head towards the sound of Annora's singing. "Mm, I should get you out of there, shouldn't I," he added to Etain softly, starting to carefully get the girl out of her carrypack.
"Shiro!" Annora cried, leaping out of the water to dart to him. She stopped nearly there, staring in wonder at the new baby in Shiro's arms. "It's a baby," she suddenly chirped, as Trio finally looked over. The blonde froze, staring at Etain wide-eyed before looking up at Shiro in wonder. "Who... how...?"
Finally getting Etain out of the carrypack, he set the pack aside, then leaned forward with Etain in his arms so Annora could see. "Annora, sweetheart, meet Etain. She's my new daughter. When she gets bigger, would you like to be able to play with her?" The grin he flashed at Trio was brilliant, though it softened somewhat at his next words. "Etain... used to live with Shinobu," he explained.
Annora nodded vigorously, watching Shiro carefully before saying, "Baby..." After a moment, she stepped back a pace, running into Trio's legs. Trio caught Annora, holding her even as she peered down at Etain solemnly, then up to Shiromaru. "She's in good hands. Shinobu would be happy," she said quietly, her eyes soft.
"I hope so," Shiro whispered, drawing a careful fingertip over Etain's soft cheek. The little girl gave a wide yawn, then snuggled into Shiromaru's arms contentedly. He just watched her for a moment, then shot Trio another of those blinding grins.
Trio found herself grinning back - it'd been a while since she'd seen Shiro this happy. "She looks like she likes it with you, at least," she noted, lifting Annora into her arms when the girl turned to her and grunted a demand. She blinked as Annora's arms tightened a bit too much, and looked at her own little girl, shaking her head. "It's okay, sweetie. Shiro's gonna play with you, too."
Shiro blinked at Annora, then padded closer, leaning in to kiss Annora's cheek gently. "I could never forget you, 'Nora. You'll still get lots of attention from me, I promise you that."
"Annora," Trio tried, when the girl sulked. "Would you like to hold Etain?" Her eyes lifted to Shiro, looking curious.
Nodding, the water demon offered to let Annora hold Etain. "You can, if you want. You could be her big cousin, and teach her all sorts of important things!"
Annora looked between the two warily. Trio sat down awkwardly in the grass, settling Annora in her lap and beckoning Shiro over. "I'll help you for now, okay?" she suggested, her eyes dancing as she looked up at Shiro.
Shiro sat down again, in front of Trio and Annora. "Careful of her wings," he suggested gently, his smile warm as he watched Annora.
Annora's arms came around Etain carefully, supported by Trio's underneath. The blonde smiled softly, her attention caught by the baby very quickly. There was something soothing about them at this age, something that made her ache for another. But the odd feeling in the pit of her stomach quickly disappeared into wonder as Annora sang to the baby, her voice soft and off-beat as she stumbled over words.
Etain looked up at Annora, those soft grey eyes widening a little. After a moment, she waved her arms awkwardly, making soft little cooing noises. She liked Annora's singing, apparently. Shiro couldn't help but grin, his own gaze softening as he watched the pair.
Annora sang for a while longer, then looked up at Shiro. "You hold baby," she announced without warning, squirming against Trio's lap. Trio laughed, lifting Etain up to let Annora dart back to the water, then curled the girl in her own arms again. "I think... they'll be friends," she offered, more out of hope than any certainty.
"Give it time," Shiro mused, watching Annora with undisguised fondness. "Once 'Nora realizes she hasn't been replaced..." He looked down, letting Etain curl one little fist around his finger.
"I think she'll be more afraid of that from you than me," Trio returned, looking up at him.
Chuckling softly, Shiromaru shook his head. "She needn't worry. I'll still be here all the time to see her and you." He reached out, wanting to hold Etain again.
Trio gave her up to her new father easily, then patted the ground beside her. "You'd better," she teased gently, eyes soft as they watched the pair. Annora, frowning slightly as the two adults cooed over the child, darted to Psaltria, whispering for a moment before hopping on the pard's back. Psaltria winced slightly, fighting to keep from sighing at the little girl's exuberance before she padded toward the two adults, feeling much more like a horse than a pard.
Settling at Trio's side, Shiro kept his arms safe around Etain. "Don't worry, you'll consider us a constant nuisance before we're done. Hey there, Psaltria," he offered to the poor pard, then looked up at Annora. "What is it, hon? What's wrong?"
Trio looked up and choked, fighting to keep from bursting into laughter. "What on earth!" "Lookit me!" Annora crowed, bouncing on Psaltria's back. The pard's wings flared, and she growled softly, more out of frustration than anger. "Lookit me lookit me lookit me," Annora continued. Trio shook her head. "Get down, Annora. You're not supposed to ride on pards." Annora glared for a moment, then wilted, sliding off the pard's back and flouncing over to flop down beside the pool again.
"Hmmm... Trio, can you take Etain again for a second?" Shiro whispered, offering the infant to Trio.
Trio nodded, blinking and reaching with practiced arms to hold the little girl, mindful of the delicate wings.
Shiromaru rose, then made his way over to Annora, crouching down next to her. "Hey, you. Come here, I want to talk to you for a second."
Annora glanced over, eyes narrowed. She said nothing, merely waiting for Shiro to speak.
"Etain is my daughter, yes. But she can't replace you in my heart. I need to be around you just as much as I need to be around her. And besides," Shiro whispered conspiratorially, "I don't think I can take her swimming deep down in the ocean like I can with you."
Annora's head tilted, her eyes thoughtful as she took the assurances in. "You like the baby?" she finally asked warily.
Shiro nodded softly. "I love the baby. But I love you, too, Annora. Just as much."
"You love the... my... 'Nora?" Annora said, her voice fair less wary and far more content now. "You swimming with my 'Nora?"
"Yes," Shiro agreed, smiling warmly. "I love you, Nora-fish. And swimming with you is lots of fun."
"You... tickle 'Nora?" Annora asked, her voice now cagey as she turned more. A second later, she pounced on Shiro, rough, clumsy fingers already trying to worm under his chin as she yelled, "Tickletickletickle!"
Squawking playfully, Shiromaru tickled Annora right back, then swept the girl up into his arms and twirled around with her playfully. Moments later, he plopped down onto the ground next to Trio, Annora in his lap -- and kept safe, since he'd lifted her up enough to keep her legs from getting caught.
Trio laughed, Etain up on her shoulder as she watched the other two. "Thank you," she mouthed to Shiro, eyes gentle, then glanced up as Aziraphale made his way over, spreading out a blanket before Trio. "I'll have to dig a bit more for the fence, but this should work for her now, hmm?" he suggested, reaching out to pet Annora's hair. Annora laughed and mewled before announcing, "I'm a CAT," and squirming off of Shiro to go prowling on all fours down to the water. And Trio, still laughing, carefully laid Etain on her stomach on the blanket.
"A cat!" Shiro pretended astonishment. "I thought you were a fish, Nora-fish!" A large mouse made of ice formed in the water, floating there for Annora to play with, and Shiromaru looked back at Trio with a warm grin. As the blanket was spread out, he grinned up at Aziraphale, nodding his gratitude. "Thank you." Etain's wings buzzed, just a little, then she settled more comfortably on the blanket.
"Maybe she's a catfish," Trio noted, giggling. She got to her feet, darting after Annora as the girl squealed, happy once more now that she realized she'd have plenty of attention.
Etain, at that squeal, started fussing. That squeal hurt! Shiro leaned in and picked her up, rocking her to try and soothe her.
"Annora!" Trio said, realizing the problem immediately. When Annora pulled up short, Trio caught her arms, holding her still. "Look, around the baby, we have to be quiet and careful, okay? She's fragile right now, and needs us to be good for her. Can you do that for me?" Two huge eyes locked with Trio's before sliding slowly to where Etain was fussing against Shiro, and then back to Trio solemnly. "The baby's crying?" she asked, something vulnerable in her voice. Trio nodded, kneeling before her and wrapping her arms gently around Annora. "The baby's crying. But she'll probably be happy again if you go sing to her?" she suggested, letting Annora go. The girl hesitated a moment, then moved to sit by Shiromaru, quietly stumbling through the Itsy Bitsy Spider.
Shiro blinked as Etain immediately started to settle, once Annora sang to her. That seemed to be a magic touch. Etain looked wide-eyed up at Annora, then finally started to wave her arms a bit, cooing once again. "Well, now. Annora, she really seems to like your singing," he murmured, grinning at the girl.
Annora beamed in return, chest puffing out in childish pride. Trio relaxed, watching the two fondly for a moment before her gaze darkened slightly. I really need to read a lot more deeply on sirens, now that it's beginning to show... she decided.
"Mmm?" Shiromaru glanced up at Trio, brows furrowed slightly. "What is it?"
"Just thinking I should do a bit of studying soon," she said, waving away the concern as she sat down beside Annora. The siren grinned, draping over Trio's lap. "And I think it's someone's naptime. You sticking around for supper, Shiro?"
"Sure, if you want me to. I should probably put Etain down for a nap again soon, too." Shiro brushed a kiss light over the sylph's forehead, and Etain yawned again, hugely, one hand tight around a lock of Shiro's hair.
"You can put her down on my bed. I've got a couple heavy pillows to keep her safe." Trio paused then, blinking. "I should dig out Annora's bottles and things for you," she added, whirling Annora into her arms and rising with a bit of difficulty.
Shiromaru stood carefully, Etain in his arms. "That'd be appreciated. I have a couple bottles at home from the ones I bought in a hurry, but that's about it... I was going to do some more shopping tomorrow."
"Use Annora's. They're still in good shape, don't worry, and it's one less thing you'll have to spend money on," Trio said, bending down to get the blanket and carry it inside. Psaltria watched them go, then settled by the water, dozing in the sunlight.
"Thank you," Shiro said again, softly sincere. "That will help out a lot." He followed Trio into the house, humming to himself contentedly. Life... was good.

It wasn't too long before a young woman, with short blonde hair and grinning blue eyes, appeared, carrying a rather largish box. She brought an entourage with her, her siren-daughter walking beside her nearly twice as fast to keep up with Trio's longer strides, and a dark blue fox-like creature with three tails on her other side. Trailing behind both of them were two more of the fox-like creatures. One was black and dark pink, with demon's horns and a vicious gleam in her eyes that wasn't wholly hidden by the very maternal way she nudged the tiny kit trotting beside her along.
"Jaden!" Trio called, then stopped short, peering at Margarette curiously for a moment before setting the box down and smiling. "Hello," she said easily, crouching beside Margarette as the demonic Jaelle came to peer inside the box, nosing at her sleeping kit within.
((For reference, I'll include pictures of Trio's brood.
Annora is the siren-daughter, and is in my sig. Sankouri <-- This is the dark-blue fox-like creature beside Trio. Jaelle <-- The demonic zurui - and mother to the two kits. Grimya <-- This is the kit trotting along beside Jaelle. Aeriel <-- This is the kit inside the box. ))
Realizing that Margarette was asleep, Trio blushed and rose, glancing to the others before making her way to the door that led into the house. Her knock, when it came, was light and quiet, out of respect to the sleeper nearby.
"Margarette sneezes, and wakes up looking around her."
-Oh im so sorry!
"Margarette put her shoes on and stands up"
Hello, my name is Margarette Zolah please too meet you
Trio smiled, turning to Margarette and nodding. "Hello. I'm Trio. It's nice to meet you," she offered, while the various Zurui sniffed around.
Annora, in an oddly-shy moment, tucked herself half-behind Trio's leg, staring up at Margarette curiously.
Jaden came to the door, stepping out quickly. "Who is it?" he asked, one hoof catching Margarette and sending him flying. He landed in a semi-graceful heap on the grass, cursing softly. "Oh da...." he began, then saw Annora and quickly changed it. "...aaaarn it. Hi there!" Grinning, he sat in the grass, arms arapped around splayed knees.
Trio reached out instinctively, steadying Margarette for a moment before leaving her to check on the satyr. "Jaden, are you all right?" she asked, kneeling beside him.
Annora moved too, coming to stand on his other side as she stared down at him. "You all right?" she asked curiously, head cocked to one side.
"I'm fine, just a bit disoriented," Jaden said, winking at Annora. "Just woke up from a nap." He looked up to Trio then, blinking at the box and tilting his own head to the side. "You brought me something?"
Annora didn't give Trio time to answer before she grinned, launching herself at Jaden in a hug that had a surprising amount of force behind it. As Jaden fell over backwards again, Annora followed, giggling wildly and rolling to the side almost immediately. But she was followed a little too quickly by two small fluffballs, both of whom crawled over Jaden to sniff at his face.
The box, which had all too recently held the purple-pink splotched one, now lay on one side.

Jaden just laughed, trying to fend off the snuffling fuzzballs as he scooped them up, one in each hand and held them up over his face where he lay. "Well hello, what do we have here?" He glanced to Annora then, grinning. "Friends of yours?"
Seeing the two fey interacting, Trio stepped back, eyes warm as she watched them.
A few moments after Jaden had lifted the two kits, a larger face loomed over his, upside-down green eyes glinting coldly and horns looking rather sharp.

"They are my children," she informed him, voice as icy as her eyes. The entire effect was ruined a moment later, however, when Annora threw her arms around Jaelle's neck in a hug.
"Puppy!" she exclaimed, to the demonic Zurui's annoyance.
"My lady, no child will come to harm in this house," Jaden replied, his gaze flicking up to Jaelle and for an instant, becoming just as cold as her own. "Remember that." Just as quickly, the look was gone, Jaden rolling to his side and letting the kits chase his hand around.
She gauged him for several long seconds, then looked at Annora and Trio. When Trio nodded gently, she growled faintly, snapping at his hand to get his attention again. Catching up the splotched kit by the scruff of the neck, she deposited the fluffball in Jaden's lap. "See that she doesn't," she warned, without threat. Her voice left no doubt that she'd back up the command.
Annora, catching the tone, moved a little closer to Jaden's shoulder, putting him between Jaelle and herself.
Jaden scooped up the small kit, grinning when his nose got licked repeatedly. "I think I'll call you Aeriel," he said simply, ruffling the kit's ears. "You remind me of someone I knew once, long ago..."
Aeriel's sister snapped at her tail, then yipped at Jaden before scrambling off as a butterfly caught her attention. Trio chuckled, waving Jaelle over and the mother Zurui went, flopping down half-in Trio's lap and growling quietly.
"Puppy!" Annora said again, very carefully moving to pat Aeriel's rump, instead of her head.
Shiromaru came into sight, Etain in his arms, Murasaki and Dakota at his heels. Spotting the group in front of Jaden's house, he grinned, padding over to them. "Hey, everyone. Did I come at a bad time?"

Aeriel seemed more interested in playing than petting, squirming loose from Jaden's hold and moving to shove her face along the grass until she'd slid onto her side and rolled around on the lawn.
Jaden just watched her, chuckling as the tiny kit spun circles around herself. "She's beautiful," he whispered.
"Antonio you can not-- Stop it!" Eileen pulled her short bangs from the toddler's grip, who simply looked at her smugly before looking around. "Stop being such a brat." Eileen gave him a glare, and Antonio matched the glare, but his lips quirked into a grin.
Rolling her eyes and smiling, she hefted the boy, and peaked into the show. "'Allooooo?" She called. "Any'un home?" Eileen stepped into the shop, the dark-skinned toddler in tow.
Antonio echoed his mother with a loud "Alloooooooo!", making Eileen cringe a little bit in response. Silver eyes darting around, Antonio took in all the shiny things, and his eyes gleamed deviously. So many things to break, so little time...
"I think we woke him," Trio explained. Annora, seeing an opportunity present itself, squirmed into Jaden's lap as soon as it was vacated, watching the Zurui kits with dancing eyes.
"Hi, Shiro~," the little siren called, then leaned back against Jaden's chest, peering up at him with wide eyes as she pointed to Etain. "It's a baby," she confided.
"A baby is it?" Jaden whispered conspiratorially. "Nahhhhh... that's not a baby. it's a blanket." Grinning, he sat up and called out to Eileen as well. "We're out in the grass!" He waved to them on the porch and then flopped back down again, pointing to the dark haired boy as he spoke to Annora. "But that's an Antonio. Why don't you go say hi to him?"
He finally turned to Shiro, grinning. "Welcome to the shop. And thank you for taking care of Etain."
"A sleepy baby," Shiro confirmed as Etain yawned in his arms, clearly just starting to wake up. "Aaah, zurui kits... I miss having kits around." Dakota and Murasaki just eyed him, then snorted and padded off to go sniff at Aeriel.
To Jaden, Shiromaru just offered a brilliant smile, something he'd been doing a lot lately. "Thank you for letting me. She has me wrapped around her little finger already."
Annora peered at Antonio for several seconds, watching him curiously before an impish grin lit her face. "Nah~," she said, teasing the satyr.
Trio found it a little less amusing. "Annora! Be polite," she called, her voice taking on a sharp tone for a moment before she looked up at Eileen and Antonio. "Hi," she offered, when her daughter still didn't greet them.
Aeriel paused in her rolling with a sneeze as she looked up at the two new Zurui that were approaching. In an instant, she'd gotten to her feet again, front end pressed against the ground and back end in the air as her tail waved and she yipped sharply at them, bouncing around from side to side. It wasn't a threat... she wanted to PLAY. But still, she had to show them just who's house it was. Hers. And the big thing on the ground that had petted her? That was hers too.
Antonio ran over towards the satyr's voice, and flopped down beside him, grinning. He stuck his tongue out at Annora, smirking a little. "Fine. No say hi. I no say hola back." He stuck out his tongue in a finalizing manner.
"Antonio!" Eileen glared at him faintly. "Be nice."
Pbbbt! Antonio blew raspberries at his mother, then eyed Trio. "Hihi." He waved, grinning charmingly. Adults were to be charmed, and peers were to be eliminated or manipulated. It was the Way of the World.
Eileen rolled her eyes at the boy, and smiled at Trio. "Hello." She greeted.
Jaden smiled at Antonio, one hand reaching out to ruffle his hair lightly. "you still driving your mama nuts?" he asked, half expecting the answer to be 'yes'. After all, that's what kids were best at.
"Hi," Trio said, looking at Eileen with wry sympathy. Obviously, the other woman understood the difficulties inherent in teaching manners as well. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Trio. That's Annora, as you probably guessed," she offered, lifting her chin toward the small siren before smiling warmly at Antonio.
Annora eyed Antonio for a moment, then grinned fiendishly before leaning over and tickling him with clumsy fingers. "Tickletickletickle!" she sang out happily.
Shiro was content to just stand there and watch, sticking close to Trio's side. He nodded to Eileen, offering her a smile. "I'm Shiromaru," he noted. "And this is Etain."
Dakota bounced a little, still young enough that just playing was still fun, and yipped right back at Aeriel. He wasn't about to stake a claim on her house -- he had his own! -- but playing? was good.
Antonio grinned devilishly, nodding. "Uh hum!" He answered honestly. Because, what else would the young Prince do? No one else turned that lovely shade of red as Eileen did when she was completely pissed off.
Eileen laughed a little, shaking her head. "It's a pleasure to meet you all. I'm Eileen, an' this is Antonio." She reached out, brushing her fingers through his hair lovingly. He glared at her, batting her hand away, and she smirked deviously.
Antonio let out a yelp when the siren suddenly practically pounced him, and began tickling him. He squeaked in laughter, writhering and wiggling. "S-Stop it!" He ordered, trying to bat Annora's hands away from his sides. "Leggo!"
Jaden just grinned, watching the two toddlers and smiling towards Etain when he saw her. He loved children... and it made him happy to see them all here and doing so well.
Aeriel, however, was having FAR more fun, bounding up to Dakota and nipping at his tail before racing around to the other side of the larger Zurui and trying to pounce on him. Now that this had been established as HER place, she could get down to the serious work of playing til she passed out.
Trio reached up after a moment, catching Shiro's hand and dragging him down beside her. "Join us, Eileen," she offered, scritching behind Jaelle's ear. The demonic Zurui just grumbled. Sankouri, the dark blue Zurui Trio was never seen without, held back, watching the younger kits play with sharp, careful eyes.
Annora finally stopped tickling, sitting back with startling abruptness before saying, "Your turn!" Her voice was imperious, directing Antonio to start tickling her posthaste.
Antonio arched an eyebrw, eying Annora with an amused look. "...Tickle you?" He asked coolly, crossing his arms and watching her. "Tickling not thing." Translation: Tickling is not my thing. Even though his english was broken, he still maintained that 'Too Cool for You' aura that really needed to be knocked down.
Eileen eyed Antonio quietly, sitting down beside Trio and Shiro. "Alright." She smiled a little at them both, but one eye kept straying to Antonio uneasily, waiting for something to get broken, or someone to start crying...
Dakota jumped up into the air at that n** to his tail, twisting in the way only zurui and cats can, and bounded forward, trying to pounce Aeriel instead.
Shiromaru sat down willingly next to Trio, movements graceful as he made sure he wouldn't jostle Etain. "Jaden, sit down with us too," he offered, glancing back at the satyr. "Come see Etain."
Annora's eyes narrowed, her lower lip jutting out in a pout as her eyes glinted with stubbornness. "Your turn," she demanded again, reaching out to catch his arm and MAKE him tickle her. Obviously, he didn't understand the rules of her game.
Trio watched her for a moment, then bowed her head, covering her face with one hand. "She's... um... stubborn," she muttered to Eileen, knowing that Shiro was well-used to this attitude by now.
Antonio frowned at her, ripping his hand away distastefully. "Tickle. Not. Thing." Glare. He matched her stubborn gaze with one of his own, silver eyes glinting.
Eileen flinched slightly, trying to hide an amused grin behind her hand. "So's he. This'll be interested..." She laughed softly, shaking her head while she watched the exchange between Antonio and Annora.
"Your. Turn." Tone for tone and glare for glare now, as Annora tried to make him see how he was ruining the game. "Tickle!" Sankouri rose, starting to pad over, but at a sharp headshake from Trio, he sat back down, green eyes never leaving the two fey toddlers.
"They're a handful, aren't they?" Trio asked Eileen, even as she reached out to stroke Etain's hair. "Just wait until yours is this age, Shiro. You're doomed."
"Is this when I pray that Etain remains as sweet and calm as she is right now?" Shiro asked drily, grinning at Trio. Etain cooed at the touch to her hair, then waved her hands about a bit before latching onto a lock of the water demon's hair.
Taking Shiro's invitation, the satyr scooted over in the grass until his chin rested on the demon's shoulder, Jaden watching Etain with a smile. Personal space was NOT an isue to the man... it didn't seem that he really knew the meaning of the word.
Aeriel, however, was having the time of her life, letting out a series of sharp cries as she was pounced upon and rolled in the grass. For a moment, it seemed that the kit was simply a writhing ball of fur and legs, batting at Dakota wildly as she tried to get in a few nips herself.
Upon wandering around with excuse of 'Dulcinea needs a walk and some fresh air,' Angie found herself nearing the same clearing that she'd visited a couple of times already. The one that this Jaden person lived, who could tell her a bit more about the child that rested within her arms. This time, however, she actually managed to leave her house alone, save for the two tiny pixapups that nested within her tail as she walked. The two collies peeped out now and then, making sure all was right with the walk, before returning to their catnap, so to speak.
The fox-girl could hear voices all around, and brightened when she thought she heard Annora's voice over them all. As she padded closer, a smile brightened her face, certain it was the little water nymph's voice she heard. That meant Trio wasn't far away, so she wasn't alone. Snuggling her charge carefully, the baby girl gurgling and cooing softly to herself as she caught a strand of Angie's hair and rolled it between her babysoft fingers, the fox-girl adjusted the hawaiian print blanket before looking over her shoulder at the hitch-hikers in her furry tail. "Jit, Toshi, you guys still alive back there?" They nodded, and as she turned back to face those who gathered around the house, she quickly added a reminder to them. "Be careful. There's plenty of others here, if you get down, make sure you don't get squashed, ne?" Chuckling, she raised her voice to greet the others. "Hello there!" With her free hand, which had slipped from bracing her other arm, she waved brightly to the group.
Shiro didn't seem bothered in the slightest with Jaden's chin on his shoulder. He didn't seem to have many of his own personal space issues. Etain looked up at Jaden, kicking her legs and waving her arms.
Dakota let plenty of nips reach him, then suddenly twisted and bounded up into the air again, nosing at Aeriel before racing off in an attempt to coax Aeriel into a game of tag.
Aeriel zoomed off in a blur, chasing after Dakota... until her paws got in the way during a sharp turn, and she went falling head over tail into a yowling heap in the grass.
Jaden sat up immediately, looking towards the kit before realising that she wasn't hurt.. she was just startled and a bit embarrassed, and was now making a ruckus of things so that Dakota didn't run off and leave her.
Antonio glared at Annora, and shook his head firmly. "No." He replied simply. "Tickle Jaden." He pointed. "No me tickle." Antonio crossed his arms, eying her suspiciously in case she'd pounce him again. He'd be prepared this time...
Eileen shook her head, grinning over at Shiro. "No toddler is a perfect angel, love. An' if they are? They jus' 'aven't been caught yet." Her eyes twinkled michieviously. "Hell, 'alf the time even adults aren't always th'innocent of people."
Annora glared at Antonio for several seconds before rising and toddling off toward where Dakota and Aeriel were playing. She didn't like kids who wouldn't play with her...!
Trio choked on the thought, laughing and nodding to Eileen. "No kidding. The stories you end up with... you'd think telling them would scare people OUT of bringing any little ones into the family, wouldn't you?"
Antonio stared after Annora, and felt a slight twinge of guilt. He frowned at the feeling, and got up, toddling off on his own. Hmph. Stupid girls, and they're stupid tickly games. Feh. FEH!
Eileen laughed. "I know, right?" She shook her head, grinning. "A'course, people still want kids. And then they have stories to tell people who're too stupid t'listen t'old ladies advice." She watched Antonio, and frowned a little. "...Ha." She smirked. "A'think th'little boy's felt guilt." Her eyes gleamed deviously. "Finally."
The yowling didn't stop, however, and Jaden sighed, getting to his feet. He moved to scoop up the ball of fuzz, smiling to Shiro, Eileen and Trio. "You are welcome to stay as long as you like... but I think someone's had enough play and is regretting getting woken up too early." He cuddled Aeriel in his arms, the kit making soft whimpering noises as she tried to burrow against him. "I shall see you another time. I'm going to take this one inside and see if she can't find a comfy spot to sleep in." With a bow, he turned and walked into the house.
Dakota pouted as his playmate was taken away, then huffed and trotted off to join Shiro and the group. Murasaki was already there, curled up at Shiromaru's back. "We'll see you later, Jaden," offered Shiro to the satyr, then grinned over at Eileen. "Yeah, I know. We'll see how much of an angel she is when she gets older."
Trio eyed Shiro with fond amusement, then nodded to Eileen. "I can think of a few who didn't listen right here. ...Myself included," she added wryly, waving Angie to come sit with the rest of the new parents. "Angie! Get over here and say hi to everyone. Show off Dulci, I wanna see how she's changed."
Jaelle eyed Jaden, watching him head into the house carefully before deciding that perhaps, just PERHAPS, he really was the right guardian for one of her kits. Maybe.
Annora was drying out, and she HATED that feeling. Running over to Shiro, she tugged on the water demon's sleeve. "Make water!"
"Annora!" Trio snapped, her directions to Angie abruptly derailed. "HOW do we ask for things?!"
"May I please have a water?" Annora said, her voice slightly singsong.
Eileen smiled a bit, and started rising. "Should go see how his conscience is wagin' war on his mind." She got up. "I'll see you lot later." E's grin turned to each of them in turn. "An' feel free t'stop by our house whenever."
She turned, and started walking. Then she turned, grinning. "S'by'a lake just ou'side'a Aekea. Can' miss it." With that, she disappeared after Antonio. After getting Antonio to talk to her, Eileen picked the baby up, starting off home with the boy.
Shiromaru blinked down at Annora, then raised an eyebrow. "And what sort of water are you wanting?" Angie got a wave and a grin, as did the retreating Eileen, then his attention settled on Annora again.
Angie grinned and almost bounced to Trio's side, plopping down rather unladylike and jostling Dulci, though she managed to keep the little one from jiggling around too much. Pulling back the blanket, she exposed Dulcinea to the world, allowing the little girl to turn her head and catch sight of the colors around her. From experience, she knew that the little girl couldn't see people or shapes very well, but could distinguish light from dark, and some colors as well.
In response, Dulcinea reached out her hand to catch the first thing she could grab. Angie smiled and ran her finger across the silky cheek, delighted when she got a big smile in response.
Inle had meant to come out here sooner, ever since Medea had left a nice-sized hole in her living room wall, to ask Jaden...well, how a baby so small could leave so big a hole. Things had come up, however, and she had forgotten all about the cottage in west Barton Field until recently. Medea had been growing antsy, and Inle hoped that interaction with her own kind would calm her down. Such was the reason for her visit today.
Combat boots, she decided, weren't the best walking shoes. They were the only ones she had, however, so she would just have to grin--or grimace, as was her usual expression--and bear it. It didn't help that she nearly tripped over Theora's large body, as the Sentinel was walking nearly on top of her. It was after one such stumble that she scowled down at the large feline, holding Medea a bit tighter as if to ensure that she didn't drop her.
"Why are you here, anyway?" It had been months, and she still hadn't grown used to Theora's almost constant presence.
I am her guardian. I go where she goes.

Inle's scowl grew deeper. "I am her guardian. You're just her...her pet. Her clingy, overprotective pet." To add to the immature statement, Inle stuck her tongue out at her. Theora merely looked up at her, pupiless blue eyes making Inle look forward once more.
Medea, meanwhile, rested happily against Inle's shoulder, the body of her favorite toy, a white kitty plushie, squished between her body and Inle's. The tail was grasped in her hands instead of in her mouth, a radical change from the norm, and multicolored eyes peeked out from a fringe of dark hair over Inle's shoulder. Every so often her tailtip would wriggle, causing Inle to shift her a bit; it was much different holding Medea, who had no legs, than holding a child who had a pair.
Inle forgot all about her issues with the cat as they approached the cottage, and she slowed at the sight of so many bodies in front of it. She was an antisocial creature by nature, and fought the instinct to run away; this visit was for Medea, and she would just have to deal with it. Beside her, Theora growled softly, pressing closer to Inle, nearly bowling the small woman over.
"Shut up and get over it," Inle muttered down at her, surprised when Theora stopped.
"Water ball!" Annora beamed, eyes sparkling at Shiro as he responded.
Trio chuckled, waving farewell to Eileen before turning to admire Dulci. One hand lifted, offering up a finger to the little girl. "God, she's gorgeous," she murmured softly, eyes sparkling.
"Right, then." Shiro settled Etain carefully atop his folded legs, then held his hands out, forming a ball of water between them for Annora. "There..."
Annora squealed in delight, her voice unnaturally sharp to the rest there. She reached out, poking the ball gleefully before using it to splash Shiro with little regard for Dulcinea or Etain.
Trio missed that move, having lifted her eyes toward the newcomer, but in the middle of her greeting she turned, glaring at Annora. "Play nice," she snapped, and Annora froze, her indigo eyes huge and shimmery. Trio waited a few tense seconds, then turned back to Inle, offering a wave and a smile. "Come join us!"
Sensitive ears flicked slightly as Annora squealed, and vulpine reactions set into motion at the first few spurts of water landed her way. Quickly, Angie pulled up the blanket over Dulci so she wouldn't get wet, and further shielded the baby with her tail. She couldn't help but chuckle softly at the siren's antics, as they nearly mirrored what she'd done as a little kid. Her soft laughter quieted as Trio corrected Annora, as it was better not to be laughing at a child's reprimand. Glancing up to Inle, the fox-girl's eyes widened and she waved brightly, remembering Inle from previous encounters. "Hey there!"
Now, Shiro and Etain hadn't been forgotten by Angie at this point, she just hadn't had the chance to say hi yet. After greeting Inle, the fox-girl peered over into Shiro's lap, with a curious "Who've we got here?"
Medea blinked at Annora's squeal, wondering where the sound had come from--she couldn't see all the people camped out in front of the cabin in her position, and she tried to squirm upwards to get a better view. It didn't work of course, but that hardly mattered as Inle shifted Medea in her arms, cradling her against her chest as if to use her as a buffer against the group.
Oh, this was MUCH better! Medea could see everything now, and the sight of so many people made her echo Annora's squeal. She made grabby hands at the group, her beloved toy forgotten, slipping down to rest in the crook of Inle's elbow. Inle smiled grimly down at her adopted daughter, moving towards the group almost reluctantly.
Medea's hands waved in the air as they got closer, and in her excitement, her snakelike fangs started to come down. One might notice, if they looked very closely, that there were a few cuts, both fresh and healing, on the baby's lower lip. The fangs that had emerged that fateful night were still new to Medea, and she had trouble keeping them retracted. They emerged when she was agitated or excited, and she hadn't yet learned that teeth + lip = bad. They extended further as Inle got closer and her eyes caught on Annora. "Eeeeeyah!" she squealed, arms flailing towards the toddler. She wanted to get down, but Inle only held her tighter.
"Um...hi," Inle said hesitantly.
Annora peered up at the newcomers, her reprimand forgotten in the face of such distractions. She stared at Medea for a moment, then turned back to Shiro. "It's a baby," she crowed. Trio winced - that particular phrase was becoming old fast.
"I don't think we've met before," Trio said, rising and holding a friendly hand out toward Inle. "I'm Trio, and this is Annora." She rested a hand against Annora's silvery hair, and the girl pulled away, turning to bat playfully at the water ball once more.
Inle flashed a quick smile at Angie, remembering her only vaguely. She recalled the Boundless Estate, and the kitchen they were in and...something about waffles? But the rest of their time together eluded her. Still, it was nice to see a somewhat-familiar face. Shifting Medea and the kitty toy in her arms, she awkwardly shook Trio's hand. "I wouldn't be surprised, I don't get out much. My name is Inle, and this is Medea." She grinned down at Annora. "And yes, she is a baby."
"Brebaaaaa!" Medea agreed. Down, down, down, down...why was she not down yet? She didn't want to be held, she wanted to be down amongst the people!
"Annora," Shiromaru said, his voice firm and quietly disapproving. "Do not splash Etain." He didn't care about himself, he could dry off instantly -- which he did, and Etain too -- but Etain was squalling, and Shiro lifted her up, holding her gently. "It's okay, sweetheart," he murmured, trying to calm down Etain.
After a moment, he nodded to Inle, then offered Angie a distracted smile. "This is Etain, my daughter."
Annora knew that tone. Her face immediately schooled into a contrite, solemn look, the faintest hint of tears shimmering in her eyes as she abandoned the water ball to step to Shiromaru's side. "The baby's crying?" she asked, tugging on his sleeve, and her own voice sounded so very heart-broken.
Trio shook her head, then smiled. "Come sit down. It's good to meet more parents."
At the squalling, and squealing and soaking going on around them, two tiny faces poked out of Angie's tail, glancing around to see what the fuss was all about. The two collie pixas clambered up from Angie's tail and rested in the crook of her arm as she held the little dryad baby, settling themselves there so they could look around and 'protect' their 'charge'. Dulci, upon catching sight of furry brown blobs nearby, began to grope around with her fist, trying to catch one of them. However she managed to get a fistful of Angie's haltertop, which threatened to shift in a most unladylike manner. Gasping, Angie quickly loosened the fist, her face about as red as the shirt she wore, right as Shiro explained whom he had in his lap.
"Awww she's adorable. Congradulations Shiro! She's quite beautiful!"

"Thanks," Shiro offered to Angie, grinning, then eyed Dulci. "Looks like you have a handful, yourself."
And then Annora makes that face. "Yes, Etain's crying," he confirmed. "She doesn't like being splashed like that. She's not like you and me, she likes to be around wind instead."
Inle nodded, realizing only then that the other three adults must be parents; it should have been obvious, as they were all holding kids. With a sigh at her own slowness, she sat herself close to Angie, as if the woman's vague familiarity would save her from that which was unfamiliar. Theora laid next to her, pressed against her side, and Inle shifted Medea once more to sit in her lap. She balanced her carefully--Medea didn't have legs to sit on--and it was slow going with as squirmy as she was.
Inle glanced over at Angie. "I take it this one didn't come from a test tube," she quipped with a grin.
Zero hadn't been in there since... well... ever. Hell, more of the events surrounding Shiku's arrival was still a misty blackhole in her mind, and the only idea she had was the small buisness card that came with the sextant.
Now that her moving had went trough, she had time to dwelge into this further.
With the small genie following right beside her, and ratter happy that they where taking a walk during night for once, she peered into the building only to see that there was ALOT of people here. In fact, she would have backtracked, if Shiku hadn't taken the matter into his tiny hand and slipped trough, forcing Zero to follow him.
Annora cuddled up againt Shiro in what might have been guilt... or could've been jealousy. She began to sing in a soft voice, her words surer now than they had been even a week ago. Her vocal skills were improving steadily, and quickly. The song was soothing, the lullaby soft and gentle. It took a moment to realize that she didn't know all the words.
Trio, glancing around, was content to remain quiet for the moment, still soothing Jaelle from the earlier frustration of giving up her kit to Jaden.
The blush further deepened as Shiro eyed Dulcinea. "That she is, although there's times when I wonder if she's dropped off the face of the earth, she's so quiet and self entertained..." Turning to Inle, Angie grinned, the embarassment of nearly showing her assets to everyone n the clearing forgotten momentarily. Eyeing the little naga up and down, Ang could only assess that this little one was also a fey, such as the rest of them. She was bowled over by Inle's comment, but quickly replied with a laugh. "Actually, she came from a stick." Then, to make it a bit more clear, she added, "A wand, to be more precise. With a crystal at the tip."
Raising her head, she caught sight of another person wandering in, and couldn't help but wave a greeting to her as well. "Hello there!" My, wasn't Angie friendly today? Dulcinea gurgled and nabbed a fistful of hair along with Angie's shirt this time, seeming to grin in absolute deviousness as she did so. This time, however, the fox-girl moved with the shirt, leaning forward a little bit to keep herself decent and proper. A quick, but audible mumble to herself quickly followed. "Someone remind me NOT to wear shirts like this anymore...." This brought a delighted snicker from the pixa-collies in her arms as well, as Jitsumi and Toshi found this whole situation quite hilarous.
Shiku went straight to Annora, attracted by her voice, and coiled his tail to sit in mid-air, clapping in hand when the siren was done with her song.
Zero almost jumped, but regained her composture.
"Hey !" She smilled. "Uh... what's going on ?"
Shiro shifted slightly and moved Etain, offering his lap to Annora. As Annora sang, Etain started to calm down, her squalling quieting until she was cooing again, gently; Shiromaru relaxed at that, smiling to himself. He wasn't ignoring anyone else, he was just focused on the two girls.
Inle chuckled at Angie's predicament, politely looking away. Her gaze fell on the singing girl and the floating boy--hey, he was just as legless as Medea--and wondered just what manner of species all these children were. She knew they were Changelings, as Jaden had told her on her last visit, but they certainly didn't all look the same. Most interesting...
Medea's squirming stopped as Annora's singing started, and she watched the girl with wide eyes. She relaxed in Inle's grasp, no longer trying to get free, and her fangs retracted completely. Inle looked down at her curiously, surprised by the sudden cease to her struggles, and smiled, brushing locks of dark hair out of the baby's face.
Trio caught their various reactions and leaned toward Inle, though her eyes were watching Annora carefully. "My daughter... is a siren," she explained, wondering if she'd need any further words. Or if, in retrospect, Inle or Medea might react as Keelan had, with immediate condemnation. Steeling herself for just such a response, she kept her gaze on Annora. Shiro would protect her - he knew of her heritage already. She was more concerned with making sure that the sirens' darker nature didn't show up until she could find out for certain whether it was genetic or learned.
Inle's head tilted upwards towards Trio, confusion obvious on her face. She was not well-versed in the knowledge of mythological creatures, and she had only heard the term "siren" tossed around in reference to pirate tales. She didn't really know the story behind them, and even if she had, well...she lived with worse. "She's got a beautiful voice," Inle said quietly, not wanting to disturb the child's melody.
Shiku stopped clapping after a bit, and gave Annora his cuteless little smile, and an hand wave. She was blue, just like him !
Zero just decided to sit on the couch and watch. Shiku looked like he wanted to stay for now...
Annora looked around at all the people listening in wonder, coming back to herself. This was... incredible. Preening more than a little, she reached out, poking Shiku playfully before snuggling back against Shiro's chest. "Baby's sleeping," she informed everyone, in a stage whisper, without even looking at Etain.
Trio nodded to her, then grinned up at Zero. "Hello there, stranger!"
"Hey !" Zero smilled, then scatched the side of her head. "Uh... what's going on ?"
Shiku blinked, then uncurled his tail, reaching to poke her back with an extremely low giggle, as if he was aware to not wake up the other baby.
At the sound of Annora's singing, Dulci quickly let go of the shirt and slowly turned her head in the direction of the soft voice. It seemed as though she were weaving and swaying to the music, a thoughtful look to her face. But were such things possible at such a young age? Only Dulci knew...
Smiling at the enrapture of the other children, including her own to the music sung by Annora, the fox-girl couldn't help but chuckle. "She's like the pied piper of Barton West Field. I think these little mites would follow her anywhere as long as she kept singing like that."
Well, Etain wasn't sleeping, but she was resting quietly, hand curled around a lock of Shiro's hair again. Shiro watched Annora with fond exhasperation, keeping quiet.
Trio nodded, though she didn't smile at the comparison, or the compliments. That was for Annora, who completely missed the 'pied piper' comment since she didn't know the story. "She's very good, isn't she," Trio said instead, her words less a question than a musing. Shaking herself out of it, she turned to Zero once more. "Just a parental pow-wow, since we're all here. Pull up some grass?"
"Heh." She flicked a braid away from her face. She tried her best not to look as lost as she was in reality.
"I think Shiku likes her." She said, a bit amused.
A soft furry silver ear flicked lazily as Angie peered over at Etain, smiling in genuine fondness for the picture that was presented before her eyes. Both father and daughter seemed quite content with each other, as much as herself with Dulci, if not more. A fond glance down at her own child nearly brought tears to her eyes. It wasn't often that Dulci fell asleep so angelically, though she was quiet it often took quiet a while for her eyes to finally feather shut. But, even in the brightness of the day, the babe was sleeping as soundly as anything.
It was hard to believe she'd gotten so attached, so quickly, but here Angie was, sitting with a child upon her lap, and she couldn't think of how a single day could go by without this sweet little angel with her. "Looks like someone has indeed drifted off to dream land..." Mused the fox quietly, as the pixas that had been sitting in the crook of her arm gently stood and crept down to the ground, as to keep from waking the little one.
Shiro, however, pulled himself up, cuddling Etain. "I need to get her home and get her fed. I'll see you all later, okay?" He flashed a broad grin at the others, then started off, Murasaki and Dakota following after him.
"Take care, Shiro. I'll see you tomorrow," Trio called, waving at her friend before dragging Annora onto her own lap. The movement displaced Jaelle, and the demonic Zurui padded off with a growl to gather up her little kit.
Annora protested the movement, grabbing at Shiku's wrist before she could get totally out of Shiku's reach, and dragging him along.
Shiku gave a tiny, suprised meep, but allowed himself to be dragged off nonetheless, peering at Trio with wide, curious eyes. Was she the blue girl's mommy ?
It was probabely odd that Shiku didn't seem tired at all... Hell, he was perfectly awake, and quite the little ball of energy, floating idely in the range he could cover, with Annora holding him and all.
Waving to Shiro on his way out, Angie gently rocked back and forth with Dulcinea in her arms, soothing the girl further into a pleasant sleep. Her eyes flitted over the two children in Trio's lap, chuckling softly. It definately felt good to be in company of others experiencing the same as herself. Having children quite literally dropped into their lives to raise as best they could. A comfortable feeling to be surrounded with such wonderful company, she mused. A soft whimper brought her back to herself, as Jitsumi pawed gently at her knee. "Go ahead sweetie, but don't go far, okay?" The pair of collies bounded off into the grass, bored with the humans around and wanting to explore their surroundings for a little bit.
Annora seemed pleased when Shiku didn't try to pull away, and after a moment, she looked over to where Grimya was finding crickets to pounce. "C'mon!" she said abruptly, scrambling off of Trio's lap and tugging Shiku toward the Zurui kit. "Let's play puppy!"
Trio chuckled, flopping back onto the grass with a sigh when Annora was off again. She trusted in her Zurui to keep the girl safe. "It's a good day, isn't it?" she asked, of no one in particular.
Shiku blinked, and looked at her. He didn't mind being tugged around too much... was less tiring than floating around. "Pway pwuppy ?" He asked, tilting his head.
"Yeah.. yeah it is." Zero answered. She had managed to get something extremely overdue today, so...
Tilting her head to glance at Trio, the question was mulled over for a moment before she answered. "Yeah, I think it really is a good day." Chuckling softly to herself, the foxgirl sighed softly. She was beginning to tire, which wasn't normal for herself at all. Normally, even at this hour, she'd be bouncy, talkative and quite....foxy, for lack of a better way of saying it. But anyone who'd noticed her lately would notice she'd been quiet, seeming to mull over things more so than usual. Maybe she was just growing up..
Snuggling Dulcinea close to her, the fox-girl swayed softly to a song in her head that had popped in at the mention of it being a good day.
Annora giggled, dropping down to all fours after releasing Shiku's wrist and barking up at him playfully. "I'm a puppy!" she said, yelping when Grimya took the words to heart and pounced at her.
She was a puppy ? How odd. Was he a puppy, too ?
Trough. Shiku started wagging his tail and yipped as best as he could, puncing Annora as well. He had more experiences with kitties, but hey. Couldn't be too different, right ?
The pixas in Angie's care perked up at the sound of yelping, and bounded back from whatever direction they'd headed off in, curious as to what the commotion was about. Angie watched them, mindful of where they were to make sure they didn't get smooshed, though she guessed both children were probably used to small creatures by now.
Jitsumi held back, while her counterpart, Toshijirou bounded around Grimya, trying to get the zurui's attention. Tilting her head, the little female pixa, Jitsumi, blinked at her mate's actions, not to sure he was the same Toshi she'd fallen in love with. He was normally quite reserved, but now he was acting more like a puppy. "Trying to flirt with another girl? I see how it is Tosh. Make 'Sumi jealous whydon'tcha?" Angie teased, having come out of her languid stupour for now.
Trio rose after a moment, scooping up Grimya and tucking her over one arm. "C'mon, Annora. Someone's getting sleepy, and I think it's me," she quipped, before looking back at Angie and Zero. "It was good to see you both again. Please come by sometime! I'd love to chat with you. And bring your little ones." On that comment, she looked directly at Zero. "Annora needs more friends."
Her Zurui padded close, the dark blue one approaching Shiku and gently attempting to herd the boy back to his mother.
Angie glanced to Trio as she got up and started to leave, but it registered slowly. By the time she realized what was going on, she snapped out of it just in time. "OH! Ahh! Yes, definately good to see you again hun. We'll be by sometime soon, count on it." Smiling, the fox-girl scooped up her own menagerie, via her tail, and waved to both Zero and Trio. "I think I'd better get home too. So many chores to do, and so little time... You guys do know you're welcome at my home at any time, I only live a fairly short distance from here, as it turns out." With that, the fox-girl waved brightly and turned towards home. Her departure was more abrupt than she'd liked it to have been but she just wasn't feeling herself this day. Snuggling the little dryad baby to her chest, the fox-girl quickly skittered out of sight, sighing softly to herself, and hoping they wouldn't mind that she left as quickly as she did..
Zero nodded, understanding as she recovered the genie from the zurui.
"We need to get going too..." She hummed a bit. She should have been home hours ago...
With that in mind, she was gone as well.

Knowing full well Tera would kill her for this, eventually, Anwahs found herself standing on the walk that would lead her up to the house she knew belonged to one Trio Maxell-Chang. The girl had left her with little choice, however, so here she was, with all intentions of marching up the path and knocking on that door. Hesitancy was the word of the moment, though, and there she stood, biting her lower lip and twisting a lock of her hair that shifted from green to black to red, all in the space of a babie's breath.
See, the notion of doing this, even for Tera's own good, was stressing Anwahs to the point where she could barely hold a cohesive structure to her appearance. She didn't *want* to betray her granddaughter's confidences like this, but... Those swirling colored eyes, all iris, no pupil or white, suddenly glistened. That Tera felt she had to resort to such drastic measures gave her the tiniest of glimpses into what must be still a dark emotional crevice. That any offspring, or decendant of one, could be hurting so badly... Well, Anwahs had flung other gods into mortality for lesser crimes against her kin.
Taking a deep breath and squaring her delicate shoulders, Anwahs set her jaw and began marching all four foot nine inches of herself up that path and towards the door.
She didn't quite make it to the door before a tiny blue girl, stark naked and giggling wildly, came streaking out of the doorway, with two grown adults following her. One of the adults was faintly fox-like, his fur tan and luxurious and the look in his eyes murder. The other, a girl with thick blonde hair and bright blue eyes, followed close on the kitsune's heels, her own expression torn between merriment and fury. "Annora Lyris, get back here this instant!" Trio called out sharply, bypassing Anwahs and catching up with the little girl. The kitsune reached Annora first, grabbing the struggling, giggling form up into his arms with a growl that should've been terrifying. Annora simply turned, throwing her arms around him with childish glee.
Having seen a number of nekkid childrens in her time, the sight of a tiny blue tot skyclad didn't cause Anwahs much time for a pause; she really hadn't gotten enough of a glimpse of the blur to make a distinction between hair and skin and fin. It was the pair that followed her, however, that made her stop mid-march, eyes blinking in surprise. The male, now *there* was a creature she'd never seen, at least not on Gaia, and certainly not in the House; she gave a mental "Thank you" to whatever had kept Tera from running across his kind and therefore offering them a place to stay with her. Enough damned creatures wandering about, even if the anthros weren't half as helpful as this one appeared to be. Okay, that didn't count Rith. But the others...
The other, female, who looked so much like the images of Trio Maxwell-Chang kept by Tera that it led Anwahs to make the immediate assumption that this must, indeed, be her, and she swallowed, hard. Forgive me, Teralin. Immediately she released the lock of hair, which sprung upwards and joined the rest of her coif in forming a sea green boufant. Her voice, when she finally spoke, was much stronger than her churning insides. "They're so much fun at that age, aren't they?"
Dalreidan, the kitsune currently holding Annora, turned to glare at Anwahs, his eyes sharp and cold. But Trio was much more welcoming, barely noticing her companion's bad disposition as she glanced up and grinned. "They are. Chaotic as all hell, but fun," she agreed, reaching out to tousle Annora's hair. The little girl giggled again, snuggling up to Dalreidan as he carted her inside. "Can I help you?" Trio continued, gesturing toward the house in welcome. "Az made some coffee cake, if you'd like to join us?"
Amused at the look given to her by the male, Anwahs had to grin at bit. Of course, she was also touched by the expression; after all, here was a strange woman commenting on what appeared to be his family, and Anwahs knew exactly how strange she looked.
"What's life without a bit of Chaos, eh?" Tempted to wink at Trio as she said that, she refrained from it, simply watching Dalreidan's retreating back. Her hair chose that moment to retreat into a mousey-brown shag, and she shook her head at the sudden tickle against her ears. Though this wasn't a social call, it would probably be easier on everyone if she just kinda... squeezed the news into general conversation.
So with that, she answered Trio's question with, "If Az is half as good a cook as Teralin's Rith, I'd be a fool to pass it up."
"Teralin's... You know Tera!" Trio said brightly, as though the fact weren't immediately obvious. "How is she?! I haven't seen her in ages." Although her smile was still there, it faded slightly at that comment - although the lack of contact wasn't wholly her fault, she certainly hadn't tried to fix things as much as she could've. "Come in. I'll make sure you've got plenty to take back with you for her," she added, seeming not to notice the hair change in the slightest.
Of course, that last might be due to the myriad of creatures roaming about the two story house. "Mind your step," Trio noted, as she carefully stepped over a trail of Pixapets being herded into the living room. "You have to be a little careful in here."
Ever the tactful one, Anwahs quipped, "Looks like you need a bigger house!" There was pleasantry in her voice, and she stepped over the Pixas as well. From the looks of things, whatever Tera *didn't* have in her own House was over here, safe and sound and happy. And as tempting as it was to pretend not to have heard Trio's query as to the wellbeing of Tera, Anwahs couldn't be certain as to what the other woman's reaction would be if she held out, and truth be told, she couldn't take the chance.
Her voice, while still light and airy, perfectly friendly, took on a bit of the same accent that Tera's did at times; stress and deep emotions were the best way to bring that out. "Actually, she's the real reason that I came to call. She hasn't had visitors in so very long, I think it might do her some good if you came over."
There. It was done, or halfway so, and as anyone knows, halfway so tends to be hard to stop.
Trio nodded, not missing the implications, but leaving them to rest for the moment. "We've both been caught up in our own households, I imagine. I don't think she's met Annora yet, even," she said instead, as Dalreidan appeared again, this time with Annora clad in a simple bathing suit. Trio brushed her fingers through Annora's hair, then paused, listening as Dal murmured he'd take her out to the pool. Nodding, she turned to lead Anwahs into the kitchen. "I don't think I cauhgt your name?" she added, as she readied two plates.
Anwahs took a moment to wiggle her fingers at the little one, using a bit of control over her shifting abilities to change her hair into a similar style and color as Annora's, sleek and white with a blue-green streak down the center. Children were so cute, and so much fun.
As for the name. She turned from the child in order to follow Trio into the kitchen. "You can call me Anwahs." Out of the potpourri of names she'd been called, that was the easiest. "I'm Teralin's grandmother." The sweet-spicy smell of the coffee cake tempted her mouth into salivating, and she managed not to drool.
Trio paused at the name, not looking back at Anwahs. "She's mentioned you to me before," she noted absently, trying to recall just WHAT Tera had said and failing. It was, after all, a while ago. Finally getting everything onto a tray, Trio beckoned Anwahs. "It's such a nice day, let's sit out on the back porch," she suggested, already leading the way. With the new pool in the sideyard, the backyard often became relatively empty... and that was just what Trio wanted.
"Sounds good to me." And sitting outside did sound good, preferrable to being cooped up indoors while a motley crew trampled around about you. Chaos was one thing, but interrupting important conversation, that was completely different.
Anwahs followed after Trio, then remarked, "I hope she mentioned good things when she mentioned me."
Trio just tossed a grin back at Anwahs. It didn't take long for them to settle in chairs on the back porch, a barrel-table between them with the food and drink on it. And once Trio had seen that they were, indeed, as alone as one could possibly get in this house, she glanced at Anwahs. "So tell me why you're really here."
"Quick, and to the point. I can see why Teralin likes you." She reached out to get one of the drinks, thinking that a sip or two would help her to figure out exactly how she'd explain this; after all, Anwahs wasn't exactly one of the most planned folks about, and "Go tell Trio" was about as far as she had gotten. "I wasn't kidding when I said I thought a visit would be good for her." Here, a sip of drink, which she knew was so obviously a ploy for delay. The sip turned into a leisurely swallow. Well, best to just jump in with both feet, see how big the splash went. "She's made herself emotionally distant in order to avoid her past, and I'll be damned if she's letting me help her out of it."
It was odd how eyes, with such whirls of mangled color, could actually look sad.
Trio blinked. And blinked again. Tera? Emotionally distant? HUH?!
"Maybe you'd better start from the beginning," she finally said, when the initial confusion wore off. "I think I'm missing something here.
"She's going to kill me for telling you all this," Anwahs stated naturally, as if it were the most innocent thing in the world. "Smother me in my sleep, most likely."
And start from the beginning? Anwahs wasn't certain there was time for that far back. It would take days, at least. Or did she just mean the beginning of this situation, perhaps, she contemplated while sipping at her drink. "Teralin goes through ups and downs, emotionally. When she's up, she's very up, perfectly stable. When she's down, she's a ball in her bed." Oh, but this was harder than she thought it would be. "This last time had her balled up for a month or so, and rather than just ride it out, she decided to take matters into her own hands."
Admit that the Stone was her own doing? Never. Besides, that was eons ago. "She's using an artifact from our world to block her emotions, because 'It's the only way she can care for her family'." This last part was spoken in a pitch-perfect imitation of Tera, though with a slightly rougher accent. "And I can't get her to stop."
"She's been like this how long?" Trio demanded, eyes wide as she rose to her feet. Her coffee cake and drink remained on the table, untouched and forgotten, and she was already heading back into the house. "Why the HELL didn't someone come get me sooner?" Depression, it sounded like, and no one should have to go through that alone. God knew, she'd dealt with it enough herself, during times when memories made her weak. Never that bad, but... that was the point, wasn't it? It was that bad.
"Sankouri!" she called out, before Anwahs could answer her. "C'mon, we're going!" She hesitated at the door to the sideyard, then shook her head - Tera needed her attention for this, and if Annora might bring her out of it, then Trio would just bring Tera back here. "You," she added to Anwahs, "can explain on the way. In full."
And it was that bit of decisive action that won Anwahs over. Nevermind the welcoming of a complete stranger into one's house, nevermind the scrumptious cake that even now she was grabbing up a bit of, so as to be able to nibble it on the way out. Hopping up out of her chair, exhilirated by the flurry of movement, the suddeness of the moment, Anwahs began to follow Trio.
"Which part exactly do you want me to explain in full? There's a lot of points to cover."
"Last I checked, it was not quite an hour to town. That should be plenty of time to run through the highlights," Trio said firmly.
As they reached the door, Aziraphale caught up with Anwahs, smiling brightly as he handed her a large tupperware container. "Here. To share with your family," he noted, before disappearing back into the kitchen. The container was still warm, and the faint shape of a full coffee cake could be seen through the nearly-opaque top.
"Coming?" Trio asked, stopping just long enough to drag some sandals on before she disappeared out the door and headed toward the garage.
Anwahs mouthed a "Thank you" to Aziraphale as he handed her the container, though she was still following after Trio. Wouldn't do to be left behind after all. It would occur to her later that Az was mightily familiar, at least as far as what he was went. "Right behind you!" she called out to Trio, trailing her towards the garage.
"Aii, plenty of time. And I should probably start out with the 'how long' part." Running a hand through her hair, which was now bubblegum pink and in tight little ringlets, Anwahs went on. "The bedridden part, two or three months. I'm not really sure, because Teralin's not big on calendars." There was a thoughtful nod. "This bit with the Stone, though, I'd say that was about three and a half weeks."
"Tell me again why the HELL you didn't come to get me before?" Trio demanded. "Bedridden for two or three MONTHS? What was everyone thinking?! And then this? That stone, whatever it is, is the last thing Tera needs right now. What she DOES need is some good, solid caring and help," she preached, as much to herself as to Anwahs. "What got her this bad?"
The remark Anwahs gave was almost off-handed, belying little of the bristling she was going through internally at the insinuation that Tera hadn't been receiving good, solid caring up to this point. "I've been doing the best I can, tending to her and staying with her through the night. I was the only one she'd let into her room to see her, you know." She tried not to think too much back on those terrible, long night, because thinking of it broke her heart, and the last thing she wanted to do now was cry. "I was afraid to leave her for too long, else she did something drastic. I didn't even really know about you until she *had* done something drastic."
And of course, there was the question, wasn't it? What *had* gotten Tera so bad? Anwahs couldn't keep the note of regret, consernation, sense of failure from her voice. After all, this was her favorite granddaughter. "I... just don't know. I know she has nightmares, and I know she had a bad childhood. But what exactly it is that gets her like this..."
"I really hope by drastic you mean the stone," Trio said, eyes flying to Anwah's in alarm. For that one moment, before she turned her attention to getting in the car, her own self-castigation was obvious.
"The Stone, yes." Her eyes met Trio's, and Anwahs could see there how close the two must be. A part of her wanted to reach out to Trio, assure her that nothing else had happened, but her stubborn streak was still simmering over the care issue. "I don't know what I was expecting her to do, but the Stone is the worst thing I can think of, and if I had thought of it then, I would have stolen the damnable thing from her."
Trio frowned deeply, nodding. "What's done is done," she pointed out quietly. "The best we can do is go forward from here." She paused, then drew a breath, turning to Anwahs once more. "Between the two of us, I'm certain she'll be fine again. And now that I know what to be on guard for, I can help you watch for this in the future, right?" she asked, a weak smile on her lips.
Well, that sounded almost apologetic. At least it did in Anwahs' mind, and she took it as that, nodding and returning the smile. "Aii, that's right. And now that I know you exist, I can send someone over if something's going down." It felt so much better to focus on the fact that Tera was about to get help, even if it meant that Anwahs and Trio together would be holding her down and wrestling that Stone away from her. She considered briefly offering to zap them both to the House, but since she wasn't that familiar with Trio, she didn't think the other woman would care to risk the chance of winding up spliced. Instead, Anwahs continued to follow.
Trio proved to have two cars - a smaller, compact car with a baby seat in the back, and a larger pickup that looked as old as dirt. She opted for the latter, glancing at Anwahs with a grin. "This one handles speeding on the country roads faster," she explained, before getting inside and starting up. "Hopefully, Az has miracled up a safe route for us, free of police." With that, and once Anwahs was in place, she took off. Anwahs quickly got the impression that Trio's idea of casual speeding came closer to breaking the sound barrier than most jets. "One good thing," she said, as the truck bumped and shuddered along. "We're not in THAT much of a hurry... if this has been going on a while, she'll be okay untilwe get there."
Anwahs grinned back, though one hand was on the door handle, tight enough to warp leather. This is... new. She couldn't for the eternity of her remember going this fast in a method of travel that wasn't completely under her control.
Damn, she *liked* this.
With a nod, Anwahs agreed, adding, "Right now, she's doing paperwork in the library. I don't know if she knows I'm gone."
"Well, she'll know when we get back," Trio said, her eyes glued to the road and slightly wider than normal as she attempted to watch everything around her. Just because she was used to driving this speed didn't make it any less dangerous, as her dad used to say. Mind you, he'd had a huge smirking grin on his face when he pointed it out.
"You don't have any idea what set her off?"
"To using the Stone? She told me it was so she could take care of her critters properly." The wrinkle of Anwahs' nose showed how much she thought of that idea. "How she can care for them without actually being able to care is beyond me, though she probably thinks it's a sight better than leaving them to fend for themselves." Her grip tightened again, reflexively, as things flashed past the window. "I don't know what started the nightmares this time around. When it comes to things that hurt her, she's got this notion that telling someone else is only going to hurt them, too."
Trio considered that for a moment before grinning faintly. "I don't care what she is, she can't out-stubborn me. I was raised by the two most stubborn men you've ever met. I learned a few things along the way." Yes - going this fast was definitely cutting down on the time it would take. "If it comes to it, I'll just set her up in the Menagerie again... or move into her house for a while. I trust there's enough room should I need to do that?"
"Oh, plenty." And if there wasn't, Anwahs could certainly force that pair of Juu to share. Especially that Miz. The word "again" caught her attention, though, and she raised an aqua-green eyebrow past matching wing-swept bangs. "'Again'? You've had to set her up before?"
Trio nodded, glancing over at Anwahs in surprise. "Her house burned down. Some of the pixas came to me in concern at the thought of living at ZDT's house, so I gathered up Tera's companions and kept them over here for a while, until she got back. She stayed with me for a bit while her house was being rebuilt," she added, with a sad smile. "When she headed back home... we just kinda lost touch again. I figured she was getting settled in."
Burned down? That would explain why it had been reconstructed. Even as she made a mental note to quiz Tera about specifics later, like who, how, and why, Anwahs nodded. "Probably getting distracted by dragging more critters in, is more like it." Chuckling at her granddaughter's habit of adopting near all she came into contact with, she added, "She even brought home this old stringless lute. Right before the nightmares started."
"Stringless lute?" Trio blinked, finding herself smiling in bemusement. "Sounds a bit like Annora's harp... where'd she get it?"
"Not sure, really." Funny how often it came up that there was something she didn't know. Then again, most of the time she didn't ask questions, just went with the flow. "All I know is that it's supposed to attract a fae creature, but it hasn't yet."
Anwahs refrained from grumbling in frustration over that last bit.
"Attract a fae... I wonder if she's had any dealings with Jaden...," Trio said thoughtfully, an odd little half-smile on her face. "Annora - my daughter that you saw before, streaking? Her parents left her to me when they were attracted by a stringless harp. I wonder if Tera's due something of the same..."
A brilliant grin lit Anwahs' face, almost lending her the air of a demented pixie. "I sure hope so! You can't care for a baby without emotions, and even Teralin knows *that*." The grin dimmed a fraction, and Anwahs glanced off through the window at the blurs of color that were who-knew-what streaking by. "I haven't had any luck attracting anything with it, though. Been leaving milk and everything."
Trio blinked, peering at Anwahs curiously. "You... or Tera?" she asked, frowning. "I thought the lute was hers."
And there it was: Proof that a person could be a little *too* quick on the draw. Trying not to squirm in the passenger seat, Anwahs admitted, "She never got a chance to leave it out, so when she did this thing with the Stone, I started doing it for her." From Trio's reaction, she had to wonder if maybe Rith had been right. At least, in the Tera needing to do it herself part.
"Ahhh," Trio nodded, thoughtful. "I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I mean, Annora's harp had no problem attracting a fae - I barely had it a few days before I found Annora in the grass instead. Maybe the fae are concerned that because you're doing all the work, it means that Tera won't care for the child. Though why they wouldn't just leave the child to YOU... hmmm," she trailed off, thoughtful. In the end, her response was succinct and very much part of her Maxwell heritage. "One more thing to kick her a** about, right?"
"Damn straight." Anwahs nodded vigorously. That *must* be it. It made complete and total sense. "I hadn't been able to find anything in the library about the subject, other than a headache."
Trio chuckled softly at that. "I ought to get Shiki to help you. She's incredible at research..." She glanced over. "I'll talk to her when we get back, okay? She's been busy with her new home." Finally, they were approaching Tera's house. Trio slowed as she made the final turn onto another country road that would take them the last leg, and reached out one hand, resting it on Anwahs' arm. "Don't worry, okay? Between the two of us, Tera's going to be just fine."
That would be Anwahs' invitation at all times henceforth to hug, grab, and otherwise touch Trio. There was a part of her that wondered why in all of Gaia had Tera kept this gem of a girl a secret? Probably because she didn't want Anwahs creeping her out. Her own hand released the armrest, which was safer to do now that they were slowing down, and laid itself over Trio's. "I'm not worried, dear. Haven't been since I saw the cut of your jib."
Blink. "The cut of my WHAT?" Trio asked, laughing a little at the expression. She squeezed Anwahs' arm companionably, then returned her hand to the wheel, speeding up once more.
"Jib." She grinned, debating whether or not to explain the phrase. Deciding to go with the not, Anwahs went back to gripping the armrest. Speed was picking up again, and they were almost there.
Not good enough for Trio. "What the heck is a jib?" she asked, as she turned down the drive to Tera's house.
"Some sort of man thing, I think." Anwahs watched as they approached the gates that would lead them into the yard; not being a driver herself, Tera didn't actually have a set path or anything, but the grass was always highly resiliant to anything that tried to tear it up. "The phrase means something like, sort of person you are."
"Ah, okay," Trio nodded, her car slowing and pulling to a stop near the gate. She cast a grin over at Anwahs, then got out. "So... where am I likely to find my dear friend, that I may kick her butt?" she asked, eyes sparkling in amusement for a moment before she grew serious. "And should I go alone, or are you coming?"
As she hopped out of the vehicle as well, Anwahs considered the question. As nice as it would be to hide out somewhere while all this went down, she couldn't very well leave Trio on her own. Especially if it *did* come to the point where they needed to pin the other woman down and steal the Stone away. "She's probably still in the library, though anyone in the House could tell us where she's at if she's not." With a decisive nod, she added, "And I'll come with. You can always toss me out if you think you girls need a bit of alone time at some point." With that, she started heading up the walk.
The yard was oddly quiet, with very few movements other than the occassional stir of grass. It was almost as if the ones who lived here were walking on eggshells, going about their lives with held breaths. At least, that was the sensation one got upon walking into the yard.
Trio shuddered, not liking the sensation in the slightest. "We'll get this fixed, don't worry," she murmured, reaching out to squeeze Anwahs' hand before marching up to the door and waiting for Anwahs to let her in.
Without any ceremony, Anwahs opened the door and strode inside, tossing off a casual "I'm home" to the hand basin mounted to the wall just inside the foyer. Or perhaps it was to the marble-carved face relief that made up the splashguard, but she was past it too quickly to really tell. She didn't even stop to peek into the living room on the right, as she usually did, instead turning down the hall to the left and heading straight for the door at the end to the right. This door was closed, but rather than bursting it open as she had the front door, Anwahs paused and knocked. Not exactly a polite, quiet knock, but a knock nonetheless.
The answer was gradual, just loud enough to be heard through the hardwood door. "Who is it?" It sounded like Tera, but hoarser of voice, heavier of accent, and with none of the good humour that usually graced it.
Trio swallowed, following Anwahs with growing worry. The worry only deepened at the hoarse voice, and she glanced at the powerful woman beside her before reaching out to lay a hand on the knob. There was the normal way of doing things... and sometimes, there was the Trio way of doing things. And right now, the Trio way demanded a more immediate, less chancy approach.
"Me and a friend. We're coming in, so I hope you're decent." Anwahs added enough humour to her words to make up for all that the situation lacked, and nodded to Trio, since she already had her hand on the door.
The only reply from inside was a close of a book.
Trio opened the door, not quite sure what she might find in the room, but steeling herself to be ready for it. "Tera?" she asked, as she stepped through the doorway, a ghost of a smile trembling on her lips.
Anwahs followed after Trio silently, waiting to see what would happen.
Tera had just been in the act of standing from the chair she had been sitting in, the desk in front of her littered with various papers and books. She didn't pause this motion when Trio spoke, merely finished and turned towards the other woman, a smile gracing her face. It was an expert smile, and those who didn't know Tera might have been fooled, but anyone else would be struck with how doll-like it was, too perfect, the eyes above shining from the daylight in the windows rather than the life within. "Ah, Trio. I should 'ave known to expect ye at some point, 'aving left ye in th' lurch again, aii?"
Trio''s smile faded into nothing, her hands folding over her chest as she regarded her friend. "You can cut the act, Tera," she informed the other woman, before her arms dropped and she began to move forward. "I understand you''re being stupid."
With that, Tera's face became smooth, impassive. It betrayed no emotion, for in truth, there was not emotion to be betrayed. "Ye've been speaking with Anwahs, then." She didn't even glance in Anwahs' direction, her slim shoulders lifting and falling in the most general of shrugs. "Brought ye 'ere to talk some sense into me."
It was like talking to a robot, and Trio found herself shuddering. "Or kick, if you won't listen to talking," she told her friend, reaching out to catch Tera's arms. "This isn't going to help anything, dammit!"
"Ye're wrong." Stated as if it were a common fact, Tera made no move to keep Trio from grabbing her. Green eyes looked into blue, showing no sign of registering how much Trio was going through at the moment. "Ye've not been here ta see..." There, she trailed off, one hand lifting briefly to touch at something beneath her shirt, resting on her sternum. A thin rawhide cord snaked its way around Tera's neck, disappearing under her collar, and was most likely attached to whatever it was that was under there.
"You're right, I haven't," Trio said, her eyes searching Tera's face for even the faintest HINT of emotion. "But I could've been, if you'd called. And I still can be. You KNOW me, Tera - I may get caught up in life, but I'll never just abandon you. I can help. I really can," she said, tears glittering on her lashes before she blinked them back.
Her fingers drummed briefly against the object, before stopping their motion. "My troubles be not yers, Trio." If the tears had any effect, it was buried deep somewhere inside, smothered by an unseen force. There was a part of her that tried to remember what it had felt like, before, to look on this woman as friend, but memories of more recent emotions kept such recollections hazy. No, better this.
Quietly, Anwahs closed the door to the library, so as to keep anyone from passing by and happening to overhear anything that might be said next.
"Bullshit," Trio said, voice tight. "If my friends are hurting, then I'm hurting." Her gaze flicked down to the object beneath Tera's shirt, then back up to Tera herself. "What are you hiding from? What's so scary that you can't ask for help from me?"
"Emotions. Such fickle things, no?" It may have been an answer, or it may have been an attempt to change the conversation, though her tone of voice didn't change in the slightest. "So little can control them."
"Who'd WANT to control them?" Trio asked back, stepping closer still. "Where's the fun in that? Where's the LIFE in that?" She paused a moment, then added, "How can you possibly care for everyone here like they should be if you can't care for anything at all?"
Tera didn't make a move to retreat, as the sensation of one's personal space being invaded was based, of course, in emotion. Besides, she knew Trio was no threat to her. "There are those here who be providing them with emotional comfort. I see to their well-being. Physical needs. Goods an' shelter."
There was a snort from Anwahs' direction, indicating, as usual, how much she thought of her granddaughter's rationale.
"How long are you going to lie to yourself, Tera?" Trio asked, her focus completely on the woman before her. "I didn't think you were that type of person."
"There be a lot of things ye don't know about me, Trio." Tera actually began to turn away now, back towards the desk, one hand reaching for the work she'd left there. "This was me fer many a year. Time enough to go back to me roots."
Oh no. Not even. "There's a lot of things you haven't told me," Trio returned, hand flashing out toward the Stone. If she couldn't reason with automaton-Tera, she'd damned well cope with the emotional wreck the girl must be, and help her that way.
She knew people who could be awake and alert twenty-four, seven, after all.
Quick reflexes honed by years of training caused Tera to reach up quickly, blocking Trio's grab and nearly backing up over the desk entirely. Her eyes narrowed in focus, the assumption that Trio was not a threat quickly changing.
It was in that moment that Anwahs saw her opportunity. While Tera could fend off one pair of grabbing hands, she couldn't fend off two, not without hurting someone. And as cold as Tera's heart might be right now, she knew her granddaughter's mind would never allow her to hurt those she called family. Darting forward, and using her slight size to maneuver up beside the struggling women, Anwahs reached in and grabbed a handful of Tera's shirt, that hidden object balled up within it. There was the briefest of triumphant squeals from Anwahs, just before she blipped away, taking Stone and shirt with her.
The move stunned Trio, and she held still for a moment, nearly pinning Tera against the desk as she waited. Her voice, coming before her mind even told her she would speak, was thin and scared. "Tera...?"
At first there seemed to be little difference, save for the goose-pimpling of flesh now exposed to the air, that which was not covered by the rather prim and functional brasierre she'd been wearing underneath the now-absent shirt. Her hand came up and covered a strange star-shaped scar on her chest, almost unconciously, though it could have been more for the fact that the Stone had been laying just there a moment ago. The delicate framework of the Stone's spell continued to hold, long enough for Tera to look down at herself.
Then everything came crashing down, and in the brief second before they rolled up into her head, Tera's eyes showed a world of pain.

--------------------------
Trio stared a moment more, then reached out, curling her arms around her friend and drawing Tera close. "Talk to me," she pleaded softly, her eyes squeezed shut as she clung to the hope that she could somehow help her friend.
Drowning. That was the only coherent thought in her mind, everything else a tangled whirl of darkness and past haunts. Eyes closing and knees buckling enough where she found herself collapsing against Trio, Tera attempted to speak and managed to moan out a single word. "Sorry..."
Cursing her inability to actually DO anything, Trio lowered them slowly to the floor, curling up with Tera against her. "Tell me what's going on, Tera. Let me HELP," she pleaded, wishing with all her might that she could just find a way to link with the girl, even just to see the pain the way her uncle sometimes could.
Trio's voice barely filtered through to Tera, a month's worth of pent in emotions going on at once in her head. There was a part of her that wanted to curl closer, cling, sob, but couldn't get her limbs to react, couldn't let go of the pent in feelings, give them vent. Even as she whimpered, her body took on the limp characteristics of a ragdoll.
Seeming to realize that talking wasn't doing anything, Trio gathered her as close as possible, one foot stretching out to drag over a rather convenient blanket from nearby. She caught the corner, seeming to rock Tera as she fished for it a few times before finally snagging it and dragging it to her. And without letting go of Tera, she awkwardly worked the blanket, wrapping Tera's upper half in it as she might a child, so that at least when the woman came out of it enough, she wasn't curled half-naked in Trio's arms.
By the time warmth began to sink in, both from being bundled and from being held, the swirl in her head began to taper off some, though it left every inch of her mind raw and exposed. It was now that the voices began, mocking her weakness, belittling her strength, making it in general difficult to believe that she was really here, that Trio was really here, that there might be hope now.
At a snail's pace, Tera curled inwards, her forehead finding a resting place in the crook between Trio's neck and shoulder.
Trio breathed a sigh of relief at the tiny change, her eyes closing as she began to speak softly, bending her head so that her lips were right at Tera''s ear. "I''m here, sweetie. I''m here." The words were repeated over and over, sometimes sprinkled with assurances that she would help, that things would get better.
Despair trickled in, and Tera whimpered. Immediately the voices jumped upon that noise, sneering and mocking. Did she really think she was worth a damn, they said, did she expect to be any good to anyone, ever? Her fingers found the front of Trio's shirt, almost clutching, and she whimpered again, the two syllables that made up her friend's name.
Trio couldn't know about the voices, but her tone changed. She drew back a little, mindful of volume, and said firmly, "I'm your friend, Tera. I love you, and I'm NOT going to let you stay hurt like this. Trust me, sweetie. I'm here." Those words, interspersed with quieter pleas for Tera to listen to her and reminders that she was there, were repeated in turn. With luck, repetition would break through this mess...
Gradually, gradually, Tera opened her eyes, squinting about at the room they were in. This wouldn't do, wouldn't do at all. The library was too easy for others to walk into, and even now, Tera couldn't let any of her brood see her like this. Her face sent in lines of anguish, but Trio could see that she was struggling to gain some sort of control over it, the struggle rapidly tiring her out. Finally, she managed to whisper, "My room... Need to go..."
"Can you walk?" Trio asked gently, not arguing with her. This needed some privacy.
Her limbs slowly tested themselves, disentangling from the bundle that had been formed when both she and Trio had landed on the floor. Slowly, Tera nodded, one of her hands freeing itself from Trio's shirt in order to hold the blanket more firmly around upper half.
Trio rose as well, offering Tera help up. When they were eye-to-eye again, Trio offered a worried smile. "You're not getting rid of me, you know..."
Even though she wobbled a bit, Tera managed to remain on her feet, and she attempted to return Trio's smile. The best she could manage was an expression that seemed a little less pained. "Wouldn' dream of it..." Her voice was low, hoarse, the same sort of choky texture that one got when swallowing down the urge to cry. It was easier for the two of them to see eye-to-eye, as Tera couldn't bring herself to stand up straight.
"As long as we're clear on that," Trio said, hesitating a few before nodding to herself. She'd have to call Az and get him to bring Annora over - something told her that they'd be staying here for a few days. "You look like hell, sweetie," she noted, toying with her next thought for a few moments before going for it. "And something in you will help, okay? Let's make a stop at the kitchen and see if there's anything for you."
Something about that suggestion nagged at Tera, and before she agreed, she considered it first. Kitchen... kitchen... Rith. And gods knew who else would be in there with him. She shook her head rather forcefully; the last thing wanted was to be seen by anyone else. For now, it was enough that she was putting one foot in front of the other, treading a path that seemed to stretch a thousand steps ahead of her.
Dammit. "Later then," Trio said, her tone assuring Tera that eventually, she would not take no for an answer. She took Tera's arm, helping to support the woman as they made their slow way to Tera's bedroom.
Whether it was fortunate or not that they ran into no one the hall or on the stairwell depended on who you asked, really. To Tera, it was a godsend, though the vague recollection of Anwahs making off with the Stone kept her from actually thanking the gods for it. The thought of her bed, and covers that one could nest and hide in, kept Tera moving, eyes on her feet as if she were afraid of stumbling or tripping over something.
Trio followed, cursing their luck that none of Tera's household disturbed them. Perhaps seeing the concern and caring in even one other pair of eyes could help things, but they'd never know. Ultimately, though, they made it to the room, Trio waiting nervously for the door to close before she began to fight this again.
Trusting that Trio would get the door closed, Tera made a beeline for the bed, wanting nothing more at the moment than to collapse on it, disappear from view. That might required getting the covers untucked from what appeared to be a very crisp, military-like bed making, but enough squirming, wiggling, and maneuvering would get that done. Eventually. She mumbled something that might have been a thank you.
"Tera," Trio said, making sure the door was firmly in place before moving toward her and catching her up again. "No more hiding. Not from me, at least..."
She pulled the blanket closer around herself, not quite meeting Trio's gaze. "I'm just... tired." And she was. Fighting and struggling with the bleakness that threatened to completely engulf her being had drained Tera of most of her energy. Even the voices were quieting down, softer murmurs that still wouldn't let up.
"No you're not," Trio returned, sitting on the bed in front of Tera. "You're depressed. You need help, sweetie. Hiding will only make it worse." She hesitated, then leaned in, pressing a light kiss to Tera's forehead. "I'm here. You're going to be okay."
Her eyes flutter closed, lashes dampening as Tera tried not to start crying. "'Twill pass." That was the only hope she had now, that it would pass quickly, since without the Stone she had no other choice. She'd never really put any stock in the psychobabble techniques that Anwahs had suggested she try.
Trio's answer to Tera was as succinct as some of her answers to Anwahs, and just as foul. "Bullshit," she muttered, gathering Tera to her. "It won't pass until you work through it. And you won't work through it by bottling it all up within you and waiting for it to explode in your face again. Tera... do you trust me?" she prodded, lifting Tera's face until their eyes met again.
Tera was afraid to answer that, and her eyes clearly said so. Despite this, she nodded, unwilling or unable to give voice to the fact that yes, she did trust Trio.
Trio swallowed at the fear, humbled by the way Tera seemed to feel about it. But she shifted until she was settled against the headboard, tucking Tera close to her. "Tell me what's eating at you, sweetie. What's scaring you this much?"
Now that was too much. Just thinking about it, trying to bring words to sensations and thoughts, caused a shudder to pass over Tera's body. "No." The word was a moan, her eyes closing again, though she didn't pull away. "I can't." Voice breaking on the last syllable, Tera had to swallow a sob.
"Yes, you can," Trio said gently, wishing Schuldig were here to somehow facilitate this, wishing she had some skill that might let her better understand Tera's fear. "You're strong, sweetie, and you can do this."
Tera shook her head again. Strong? Mayhaps when it came to things that involved physical means, but not this. Never this. "Please," she whispered, pleading. "Not now."
"Then when, Tera?" Trio said, her voice gentle but implacable. "You have to talk to heal."
"Mmm..." A noncommittal sound, as Tera had no idea as to when. Right now, it was enough that Trio was here. Couldn't Trio see that? Though normally taller than Trio, she curled easily into the other woman's embrace, like a small child.
"I'm not going to leave you like this forever," Trio warned gently, pressing another kiss to Tera's forehead, as she often did to Annora. "You have to deal with it." But she leaned back then, resting her head against the wall and hugging Tera a little closer.
Feeling that the battle had been won, at least for now, Tera relaxed a bit, waiting for sleep to overtake her fatigued body. As these things were wont to happen, however, before she could begin to drift off, a gentle knock came from the door.
"Miss Tera?" Rith inquired from outside. "Your meal is growing cold."
Tera stiffened, knowing that Trio wouldn't turn him away. Especially not if he had food.
Trio's eyes popped open, a grateful smile on her face as she watched the door for a moment before calling out, "Come in, Senterith!" Her arms tightened around Tera, as though afraid the woman might bolt.
There was a moment's pause, as if the Juu outside were trying to place Trio's voice, before the doorhandle, one of those lever-type ones that made it easy for those without opposable thumbs to operate, lowered and the door swung open. To his credit, Rith registered little surprise as he entered the room, a tray balanced neatly on one hand, the other swinging the door back closed.
Tera turned her head into Trio's shoulder, burying her face against the other woman's neck. Already the scent of vegetable soup was wafting over, and her stomach lurched at the smell.
When he realized that this wasn't simply a pair of friends enjoying a moment alone, Rith sighed to himself. Then he set his shoulders, smiled gently, and finished the walk to the bed. "Your favorite, dear. Just the way I know you enjoy it." The tray was lowered a bit, so that Trio could see the bowl of soup, small biscuits lightly buttered, a tall glass of orange juice, and a few sprigs of lavender in a tiny bud vase.
Trio smiled warmly at Rith, nodding to the tray. "Az will like you. Did you cook as well as deliver?" she asked, beckoning him closer. It could do Tera no harm to see how her companions cared about her. Dropping her head, she murmured against Tera's ear, "It's okay, sweetie... it's just Senterith..."
"Most assuredly, Miss Trio." Bowing his head in greeting to her as he spoke, Rith sat down on the edge of the bed nearest to Tera, then lay the tray down beside him. While he didn't know if this new developement would be better than the state she had been in before, when she had spent most of her time locked away in her room, Rith had a feeling that it had to be somewhat higher on the list than whatever had possessed her these last few weeks.
"Not hungry," Tera muttered against Trio's neck.
Though not as quick of hearing as Miz, Rith didn't miss that. Laying a gentle hand on Tera's shoulder, he squeezed reassuringly. "Just a touch of soup. A bit of biscuit."
"Eat, sweetie. Your body needs it, even if your mind doesn't want to admit it." Trio reached out to the tray, snagging a biscuit and worming it carefully between them until it lingered just under Tera's nose. "You were willing to use that stone for them, right...? You should be willing to eat for them too, if not for yourself."
If there was any one way to guarantee she'd eat, it was that. Tera opened her mouth just enough to lean forward and take the smallest of bites from the biscuit, then chewed slowly, even though the buttery baked good practically melted upon contact with her tongue.
Rith smiled in relief, seeing Tera's jaw moving beneath the fall of her hair that shielded her face from his view. He patted his pockets down, before finally finding what he needed on his left and coming out with a paper-wrapped straw. Though they were usually used for those who had trouble holding glasses, Rith figured it would help Trio get some fluids into Tera, so he neatly unwrapped it and tucked it into the glass.
Trio looked up at Rith, her eyes sparkling for a moment as she mouthed 'Thank you.' And then her attention was back on Tera, slowly coaxing the girl to eat more. "That's right, dearheart. Doesn't it smell delicious?"
To her consternation, right about then her own stomach rumbled sharply, reminding her that she'd never touched the coffee cake Az made. She blushed deeply, ducking her head on the pretense of nuzzling with Tera as she waited to see if Rith would make some comment.
To his credit, Rith seemed not to have noticed the noises Trio's abdomen was emitting. After he had examined the tray for a moment, he made a tiny face to himself, then patted Tera's side. "I'll be back in just a moment, sweets. I've left something in the kitchen."
Tera barely noticed as he stood, concentrating instead on nibbling at the biscuit. While it was rather moist, there came a point where her mouth ended up terribly dry, and it became a little difficult to swallow. At that point Tera stopped eating, coughing lightly.
Trio smiled, setting the biscuit aside and snagging the orange juice. She adjusted her hand to hold the straw steady, then shifted against Tera, cradling her as she offered the glass. "Drink. It'll help."
Once the straw was placed to her lips, Tera sipped just as slowly at the juice as she had nibbled at the biscuit. There was a moment when she stopped drinking, giving her stomach a chance to settle, shivering lightly. The juice, fresh squeezed, was still rather cold, and it numbed as it went down.
"I want you to sit up now," Trio directed, carefully easing herself out from under Tera and guiding the woman to sit against the headboard. "The soup will make you feel a lot better."
Sitting up meant exposing herself, but Tera clung to the blanket and did so dutifully. When she was finally braced against the headboard, she looked over at the soup dejectedly. For them, Tera told herself, eyeing the bowl but making no motion to go for it.
Trio reached for the bowl and spoon, picking it up and settling near Tera to spoonfeed her. "I thought I'd call Az tonight and see if he could bring Annora over. I don't want to leave her alone so long, even if there are tons of others who'll take care of her," she explained. "And I'm told there's plenty of room for me here, if I wanted to stay over a little while. What do you think?"
Fortunately for Trio, that question came up just as Tera was accepting a mouthful of soup, which kept her from announcing what would have been her immediate answer of "No", lest she spew veggies all over her friend. The slow chewing she subjected her food to gave her enough of a chance to become curious instead, and when she had finally swallowed, Tera instead asked, "Annora?"
Trio smiled, her eyes softening with love at the question. "My daughter... well, sort of. She was entrusted to my care after Jaden gave me this stringless harp. I've been hoping to introduce her to you for a while now. I think you'll like her." She offered another spoonful as she talked. "According to Jaden, the fey world is dying. They need to be raised by humans... or something close, anyway... to properly adjust to the world as it is now. I know of a few: Keelan, Etain, Dulci... and they're all just beautiful." She glanced away, looking thoughtful. "You know me - have to take in half of Gaia, hmm?"
That brought to mind the lute Tera had come into possession of, all those months ago. Suddenly she was filled with guilt, remembering how she had bundled it up and shoved it into a closet at the beginning of her dark phase, where it most certainly was *not* attracting a fey creature from the dying world. What little appetite Tera had before that was gone, and the food in her mouth tasted bitter. Instead of opening her mouth again after she had swallowed, Tera nodded, acknowledging Trio's "take in half of Gaia" remark.
Fortunately, Rith chose that moment to return, quietly opening the door and slipping in with a second tray, laid out much the same as the first had been, though the servings were a touch larger and it had all been joined by a bowl of ripe blueberries.
Trio blinked, then smiled up at Rith. "Thank you," she murmured, her cheeks flushed but happily so. "I'll eat once Tera's done," she added. "I'm going to call Az later, to bring over my daughter, Annora. I trust that's not a problem?"
"That sounds perfectly fine, Miss Trio." Rith returned Trio's smile, setting the tray on the bed beside the first. Then, pointing at the berries, he looked at Tera and said, "These are fresh picked, sweets. Blare found a bush in the woods out back, and he and the others thought you might like them."
Tera mumbled something that sounded like a thank you, eyeing the bowl of large, plump blueberries. If the pards had found them, she knew they would be free of any possible human contaminants.
"I thought," Trio said, once Rith had left again, "that after I called Az, we could go take some milk out for the fey... set it next to that lute I understand you have." Her tone was gentle but firm - she wouldn't be taking no for an answer here. Anyone who knew her even remotely could tell that. "And... well, I'd hate to put anyone out of their bed, so I figured I could just bunk with you tonight."
*That* left Tera's head in a whirl. How had Trio found out about the lute? Milk for the fey? Bunking? Her emerald eyes blinked, confused enough that it cut through the depression for the moment. With that tone of voice coming from her friend, Tera knew there wasn't anything she could do to stop any of that from happening, but that didn't mean she had to immediately jump onboard the idea. Her fingers, seeking something to play with, found themselves plucking up one of the berries and rolling it from one fingertip to the next.
"Do you happen to have a pond around? Or a pool?" Trio continued, as though she expected no resistance anyway.
While it seemed an odd question, Tera's life was filled with odd questions, and it gave her something to focus on other than the lute and potential roommate. "Aii. Pond. Creek." The corners of her eyes tightened a bit as she tried to think harder, remembering... "Fountain. In th' back."
"Perfect. Annora will have a place to play tomorrow, then. She lives for water, I swear." Trio snuck a blueberry out of the bowl, then pushed it lightly against Tera's lips. "EAT, sweetie. Or I will."
Exactly how that was a threat Tera wasn't sure, but she obliged anyway, opening her mouth enough to purse her lips and suck the blueberry in. After a few slow chews, Tera mumbled, "You should." Should what was the question, wasn't it?
"Should what?" Trio echoed Tera's thoughts, leaning forward a little as she reached for the bowl of blueberries. Picking up the whole thing, she set it carefully in Tera's lap, urging her to continue silently.
Eyeing the bowl for a moment, Tera plucked a blueberrie up with the hand not already toying with one. The barest ghost of a smile appeared as she lifted the berry to Trio's mouth. "Should eat."
That sounded more like the Tera knew than anything else she'd said all day. Trio relaxed minutely, quirking an answering smile before accepting the blueberry. "Yes, ma," she teased, though the berry's sweetness reminded her that she really did have a full tray of food waiting for her. "If you do."
Tera nodded, accepting the terms. It was a common game, actually, that Anwahs had tried to use regularly, but had hardly ever worked, since Tera knew the other woman really fed off chaotic energies, with normal food being a random perk. Since Trio had no such alternate means to nourish herself, Tera knew she had to play nice, and reached somewhat reluctantly for the bowl of soup on the first tray. With that, she began eating in fits and starts, pausing frequently to wait for her turmoil-ridden stomach to relax and accept what it was being given.
Trio reached for her own bowl, pacing herself to match Tera's and keep the other woman's head start. Not finishing her own food meant Tera had to continue, after all. She wasn't going to give her friend that 'out' so easily. In between slow bites, she talked, quietly sharing general thoughts with her friend. "I'll get Dal to pack a bag for Annora and I. He knows where everything is better than Az. And Az will probably send some cookies for you." That brought a smile to Trio's lips that wasn't forced. "He likes you, y'know."
"He does?" Surprise, and a hearty chunk of garlic in that last bite, made her voice a bit of a croak, but Tera could be understood easily enough. At this moment in time she simply couldn't think of a thing about herself that Az would like. Other than it being Az, and him liking most.
Trio made lie of that thought with her next musings. "Yep, he does. So does Dal, actually, and he doesn't like much of ANYONE outside of my household..." A slow smile as she finished her own soup, content. The food had been incredibly good - she'd have to head down to tell Rith that later. Reaching for the bowls, she stacked them all on one tray, taking the pretty flowers and putting them on Tera's bedside table before arranging the dishes to be carried down easily.
"I want you to get a shirt on while I take these back to the kitchen and get some milk, and then we're both going to head out to check on your lute." Again that determined tone, her eyes glittering as she lifted her head to watch Tera. "Unless you'd prefer what you're wearing now, because not getting a shirt won't stop me from dragging you along," she warned, to forestall that possible conclusion.
At the mention of a shirt, Tera reflexively clutched at the blanket that was still wrapped around her shoulders. Really, she didn't think she was feeling half as bad as she had before the Stone, but that could be easily attributed to the fact that she'd also not had a nightmare since before the Stone. Best to do as much of what Trio asked while she was able, really, so Tera agreed, nodding her head.
Still, Tera waited for her friend to leave the room before she made an effort to get up off the bed and head over to her dresser.
Trio took the tray down to the kitchen, navigating slowly as she tried to find her way in the huge house. Reaching the kitchen after a few wrong turns, she paused in the doorway and spoke. Her voice was much quieter and more uncertain than when she'd been with Tera. "I've brought the dishes back. Is there a phone I can use, please?"
Rith looked up from his position at the sink, then laid down the peeler and potato he had been peeling upon a veritable mountain of already-peeled potatoes. He was wiping his hands off on a dishtowel even as he replied, and heading over towards a silverish box mounted on the wall near the back door. "Certainly, Miss Trio. If you will be so kind as to lay the dishes beside the sink, I can take care of them later."
Without pause, Rith reached out and knocked lightly on the box, which opened to reveal a sort of medicine cabinet, stocked with a wide variety of bottles and jars. What he was looking for, however, was hidden away in the back, and he finally came up with a rather interesting looking cellphone: One of Moorgaine's old T-Tone models. Turning back, Rith held it out to Trio. "There you are. We hardly ever use it around here."
Trio smiled, accepting the phone after she'd set down the dishes. "The food was wonderful," she offered, relaxing a little at his friendliness. "I'm sorry I made more work for you..." She turned her attention to the phone, dialling her home number and waiting for the phone to ring several times. It always did, as various family fought for the rights to grab it.
Returning the smile, Rith waved a hand, banishing all worries of extra work. "With the amount I serve to those who already live here, an extra mouth or two is no trouble at all." He certainly didn't have Az's habit of blushing, that was for certain. As he saw her start to focuse more on the phone, Rith nodded to himself, then moved back to the sink.
The phone call was short. It was Dalreidan who answered, not Aziraphale, and that meant any questions of how Tera was and what was going on were kept to himself. He'd see when he brought Annora and Sankouri to her, they were both keenly aware of that. Once she was done on the phone, having asked Dal to pack a few days' worth of clothing for herself and Annora, and to bring the two over, she turned to Rith, handing the phone back.
"I don't suppose you also have some milk? I thought I'd walk Tera out and she could leave some with her lute," she said bluntly, not knowing if Rith was aware of the situation but not really caring, either.
"You'll be wanting the whole milk, then." Rith nodded with a smile. "I can have it waiting here for you both once you are ready to step out. This door is the closest to where Anwahs has placed the instrument." His long-fingered hand indicated the back door, which was one of those two-piece styles, and currently had the upper portion open.
And then, as if it had just occurred to him, Rith asked, "Are there any special dietary needs I should be aware of?"
Trio nodded, taking the opportunity to peer out the top of the dutch door before looking back at Rith. "Dietary needs for Annora?" she asked, blinking curiously. It never occurred to her that it could be a concern for herself.
"Yes. And anyone else who might be joining us for a meal." Rith caught up an unpeeled potato, then began making short work of it. "I already plan for strict carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores, with additions for vegetarians of various makes." He shook the last four potatoes out of their burlap bag.
The yard, lush green and over half the length of the average playing field, spread away from backdoor and rolled upwards slightly, broken by a meandering creek which slipped in from a rocky outcropping on the left and ended in a rippling pond towards the right. A terrific waterfountain stood to the left of the yard about midway, three tiers that caused water to cascade down as if it were rain, falling gently into a basin that was near three feet across, but only a couple of inches deep if that. Bushes of various types lined the banks of the creek on both sides, with gaps here and there that exposed either open water or neat stepping stones.
On the other side of the creek was a standing of trees, several different varieties and in varying states of closeness, getting tighter and darker the further you got from the completely glass greenhouse that stood beside the pond. The far end of the standing ended in a grove, the circle of grass and mossy stones within unable to be seen by any that stood outside of it.
If one squinted just so, they could make out what appeared to be a blanket lying on the ground near the bushes in a near-straight line from the door, an object lying on the blanket, and some creature lurking under the bush, as if guarding the object from wayward visitors.
"Well, Annora's still getting used to solids, but Aziraphale will pack food for her. And Sankouri eats what most Zurui do. Given Tera's little pack, I figured that he wouldn't be too much of a problem. If he is... well, he can catch his own food, too. And he's smart enough not to eat anyone in the household itself." The words were offered sheepishly, before she turned to head to the door. "I'm going to go get Tera, before she thinks she's getting off the hook. Um... Senterith?" she trailed off, then started again. "I'm going to be trying to get her more involved with all of you again... as part of her healing. Anyone who'd be inclined to help in particular that you can think of... pass the word along?"
Rith had nodded his way through Trio's commentary on her group's dietary needs, filing it all away. He had finished peeling the potatoes by now, and switched to rinsing, using a low flow of water both to conserve the resource and to be able to still hear Trio. "I certainly shall pass it on. Most had become uncomfortable around her in her most recent state, so they shall be overjoyed to hear her nearer to normal."
"I can understand that," Trio nodded. "She creeped me out." She flashed Rith a smile, then disappeared out of the room, heading for Tera's room once more. She didn't hesitate to enter, knocking briefly only out of politeness and not waiting for an answer before she headed within. "Tera?"
When Trio had initially left, Tera had remained on the bed, staring at her dresser as if it stood hundreds of feet away, as opposed to four. Realizing that if she didn't get up soon, Trio would catch her mid-change, and the last thing she wanted was for the other woman to get another look at her scars and perhaps as questions about them, Tera had slid off the bed and moved to the dresser, relatively quick at opening a drawer and retrieving an oversized hooded sweatshirt. It had once belonged to Ben, and Tera had found herself still smelling him on it, before she finally shrugged off the blanket and pulled it over her head.
Then, when Trio hadn't returned by then, Tera had found herself leaning against the dresser, thinking. In order to set milk with the lute, she'd have to get the lute out; she didn't know yet that Anwahs had already done that. Which was why, when she had stepped over to the open closet and reached up for the bundle she had left in there, she had found herself grasping empty air. Her heart had stopped, eyes frozen on the space where she *knew* she had put the lute, when one of those hated voices had chimed in. Maybe it's been taken away from you. You've been such a horrible caretaker, after all...
And this was why, when Trio came into the room, Tera was sitting on the floor of the closet, arms wrapped around her legs and pulling them up to her chest, her face buried against her knees.
Trio stared for a moment, then drew a deep breath, moving to curl around Tera. She didn't know this latest cause for Tera's breakdown, but assumed that it must be just one more little breakdown in a string she'd have to deal with. "C'mon, sweetie... we still have milk to leave out. Then you can meet Annora, and we'll rest," she said gently, folding her arms around Tera and guiding her slowly upwards.
How could she tell Trio that the lute was gone? And what would she think once she had been told? Still trembling a bit, Tera let herself be drawn up, leaning on Trio. Finally, knowing that it was inevitable, since the next question would be where the lute was, Tera whispered, "It's gone. The lute... Gone."
Trio blinked, peering oddly at Tera before shaking her head. "No it's not, sweetie. I saw it right before I came to get you. It's out back where it's always been," she said, then pressed a kiss to Tera's forehead again. "And Senterith said he'd have milk ready for us."
"Out back?" Confused now, Tera glanced up again at where she knew she had left the lute. Of course, it made about as much sense for the lute to have ended up out back as it did for someone to have come and taken it away because Tera was being a horrible caretaker, but that didn't stop her from being confused. Still, she'd have to see it for herself in order to be sure.
With that in mind, she nodded to Trio slightly. "Okay."
Trio beamed, nodding to Tera. "That's my girl," she murmured, encouragement in the words as she guided Tera slowly toward the door. "I called Dal. He'll bring Annora and Sankouri by once they're packed."
Tera followed along, the urge to pull the hood of her sweatshirt up over her head very strong. She resisted that temptation, for the moment, listening to Trio go on about who was coming. When they reached the hall, a small cluster of Pixas were there at the top of the stairs, waiting eagerly for them both.
"Miss Trio, and Miss Tera," Pot began, trotting to the head of the pack and bobbing politely. "May we go with you to see the lute? The team's been ever so curious, but the new Zurui won't let us get close enough to see."
Trio laughed, glancing at Tera. "Well, I think it wouldn't hurt anything!" she noted firmly, kneeling to offer them a ride on her shoulders.
With that invitation, they all scampered onboard, though two or three of them made the leap from Trio's shoulder to Tera's, once Trio had stood up again. At least one of these was Bean, as her sweet little voice could be heard chatting away to Tera, going on about how much the team was looking forward to this, and how games hadn't been the same without Tera cheering on in the audience, and how, oh, there was a new pup, and he was just dying to meet her! Tera remained quiet through this speech, glancing every now and again at those who had stayed on Trio's shoulder. She didn't look terribly put out, and was careful not to jostle her Pixas. With this load, Tera found herself having to stand up straight, and not being able to hunch her head down nor pull up the hood, for fear of knocking one of the Terriers off.
Trio noted the posture change and beamed inwardly, nodding to herself as she reached out to catch one of Tera's hands with her own and squeeze gently. "We'll be picking up milk in the kitchen," she explained calmly, as though her nerves weren't shot by waiting to see if Tera accepted or rejected every new change. "And then we'll head out the back door."
Tera nodded at that, even as her mind ran ahead to who else they might run into. Rith, yes. Rainku, obviously, if he were guarding the lute. But who else between here and there? It wasn't a meal time, but that didn't necessarily mean the kitchen would be empty. The idea of running into so many folks made her stomach churn sickeningly.
"And I'll be beside you the whole way," Trio added, voice gentle. "I know you'll be just fine," she said, her fingers lacing with Tera's.
Tera's fingers curled around Trio's, though her eyes remained on the stairs as they neared the bottom, worried that she might trip over her own feet. So far, no other creatures came across their paths.
They made it down the stairs and to the kitchen safely, Trio breathing a tiny sigh of relief when they got that far and Tera was still beside her. "Senterith? Could we get that milk now, please?" she asked, at the doorway.
Rith, who had heard them coming down the stairs, was already prepared. An old-fashioned glass bottle of milk stood on the counter beside him, and he was reaching up into the cabinet to get a bowl down. "I think it might be best to use a new bowl today; the one that is out there should probably be washed." With that, Rith picked the milk up off the counter and easily strode across the kitchen, presenting the bottle, which was breakable, to Trio, and the bowl, which was not, to Tera.
Blinking, Tera reluctantly accepted the bowl.
Trio grinned at that, nodding. "We'll bring that one back in, don't worry," she offered, planning to make Tera go the last few feet alone. "It's right out there," she added to her friend, pointing through the door. "Can you see it?"
Tera looked out the door, squinting against the bright sunlight. The yard seemed to stretch for miles, with acres of blue sky above it. She shivered a bit, holding the bowl close to her chest, nodding that she could see it. Of course, she couldn't really, but there was obviously something on the other side of the yard, near the bushes. There didn't seem much indication on Tera's part that she was going to start walking any time soon.
Trio grinned, curling an arm around Tera's waist and starting to walk. "I'm thinking when I'm over tonight, we ought to pop some popcorn - Dal said he'd include some - and have ourselves a regular girl's night." She waggled her eyebrows at Tera, a move that was nothing if not amusing.
The wiggling eyebrows certainly caused the Pixateam to laugh. Tera had just taken a deep breath as they began heading out, but between the guffawing of the Terriers and the movement of Trio's expression, she managed a strained smile. On one level, she *was* amused; on so many others, the gaping maw of the outside world set Tera's nerves on edge.
Exhaling, Tera mumbled what sounded like a prayer beneath her breath, and curved her own arm around Trio for support. One step at a time...
"I don't suppose you ever had a slumber party before?" Trio pressed, hoping to engage Tera in conversation, to take the woman's mind off of what they were doing. If she did it without thinking, she might begin to really SEE what she was capable of again.
She had to think about that one, because the answer didn't come immediately to mind. Why it didn't was a question in of itself, and Tera concentrated, the process evident on her face. Finally it came to her: While she and Trio had once planned a slumber party of sorts, other activities had distracted them both. Odd, how history was repeating itself, in a way. "Nay, ne'er."
"Well, you're going to tonight. We'll raid the fridge for snacks," she noted, making a mental note to apologise to Rith after, "and tell stories and everything." Pipedreams, that one - what she'd probably do is try to convince Tera to tell her more about what was going on - but she couldn't resist imagining. "By the time we're going to bed, we'll both be absolutely exhausted to the point of the gigglies."
"All right." Tera couldn't keep the skepticism from her voice. Already exhausted, she could no more imagine giggling than she could imagine sprouting wings and flying away at this very moment. Both had been possible at one point in time, but seemed like monumental feats from this stage.
Trio stopped then, noticing they'd gotten about halfway. "Why don't you go ahead. I wanna look around a little," she suggested, holding out the milk bottle to her friend as though she had every confidence in the world that Tera was just fine.
It was almost dejectedly that Tera took the bottle, having somehow come to the conclusion that the best thing to do right now would be to get this whole thing over with. In a way, going on without Trio was a good idea, since she could leave the milk and the 'Team with the lute, then head back to the House. After all, there was plenty in the yard for Trio to look at.
"Here goes," Tera murmured, as she took the first of the remaining steps towards the lute.
Trio stepped back, making no move to go exploring. It wasn't entirely a lie - she DID want to look around some, but ensuring that Tera was okay took priority. She'd dropped her smiling mask the moment the woman moved forward, beyond her. But seeing that movement did leave a faint, lingering smile on her lips nonetheless.
It took a while, but Tera did finally reach the blanket, kneeling down on the edge of it. At first, it looked like she was in a hurry to finish, setting down the bowl she carried and filling it with the milk more rapidly than anything else she had done today, save perhaps keeping Trio from making her grab for the Stone. It wasn't until she made a grab for the older bowl that she finally paused, stilled, seemed to actually take a moment there with the lute.
Whatever it was Tera was doing was blocked from Trio's view by Tera's body, but it didn't seem to be detrimental to either Tera or the lute. A burgundy Zurui emerged from the bushes over the blanket and stood beside Tera, then laid his muzzle on her shoulder in order to allow the Pixapups there to climb aboard. Once they were secure, he moved away from Tera, leaving her alone with the lute, and headed towards Trio.
"Pleasant day for an outing," he remarked wryly, once he was within earshot of Tera's friend.
"Might be," Trio nodded, her eyes on Tera even as she nodded her head in greeting. "If the results are good."
Not bothering to introduce himself, the Zurui sat down beside Trio, also watching Tera. "She's outside. And looking a sight better than she did earlier." Several of his tails flicked randomly, mostly due to the fact that the younger Pixapups had decided to disappear within them. "I'd say the results are good so far."
As if she could sense them talking about her, Tera flicked a gaze back in their direction, before returning to whatever she was doing with the lute.
"I don't know what dragged her down so far, but I'm not gonna leave her there," Trio nodded, reaching out a hand to the top of the Zurui's head. She pet him absently, so used to having a Zurui nearby that the motion was habit. "I'm glad someone told me."
Though he puffed up a bit over being patted like a common dog, the Zurui didn't make an untoward comment over it. With a quick shake of his tail, which sent Pixapups tumbling, giggling, into the grass, he stood again. Almost at the same time, though no where near as quickly, Tera did as well, swaying slightly before she turned and started heading back towards Trio.
"Changing of the guards," the Zurui quipped, then headed back to his post.
Trio chuckled softly, watching him for a brief moment before turning her attention to Tera. If it hadn't been obvious to the woman before that Trio's statement was a fairly transparent untruth, it certainly was now. Trio's smile was back, but she made no move forward, instead letting Tera come to her.
He flickered his tails over Tera's legs as he passed her, but if the two exchanged words, Trio couldn't tell. Tera continued to walk towards Trio, head slightly down so as to watch her feet as she moved them, arms wrapped around her chest as if she were a bit cold. Finally coming up to Trio, she lifted her head, eyes weary. "Done looking?"
"That depends on you," Trio said gently, reaching out to let her hands settle on Tera's upper arms. "Are you done out here for now?"
Nodding, Tera hunched her shoulders in closer. As much as she wanted to pull her hood up now, she knew Trio wouldn't let her. As she stepped in closer to her friend, Tera asked quietly, "When are the others going to be arriving?"
"Should be soon," Trio nodded, very aware of how long it had taken them to get this far. One hand lifted, cupping Tera's cheek gently. "How come?" Getting her hopes up, she added, "Wanna stay out here a while and enjoy the air?"
"If I can nap." Apparently retreating to the bedroom would be out of the question, so the next best thing would be to curl up on one of the patio chairs. Between the food in her belly, the mental fatigue, and this warm sunshine, Tera was quite surprised that she hadn't conked out already.
"In the shade. The last thing we need is for you to become a lobster," Trio said firmly, highly pleased that Tera wasn't insisting on retreating to her bedroom. "C'mon. Let's get you set up so that you can enjoy some fresh air." Tugging her friend in for a swift hug, Trio turned toward the patio, looking around for the chair and shade necessary.
The patio proved to contain several chairs and lounges of all shapes and sizes, even a few that appeared to be made for two. Or two dozen, depending on the size of the inhabitor of the chair in question. There was a single loungechair with an odd attachment in the back, which seemed like it could hold one of the umbrellas currently resting against the side of the House.
Leaning against Trio, Tera just waited to be pushed in a general direction.
Trio guided Tera to the chair with the attachment, letting her rest there while Trio got the umbrella itself set up. Hesitating a moment, Trio finally dragged a second chair over, sitting down beside Tera and watching her thoughtfully. "Better?"
"Mmm." Tera settled a moment on the chair before curling up on one side, tucking her long legs up near her stomach. She at least curled facing Trio, and gave her friend a tiny momentary smile. Then, as if remembering, she reached into the pocket on the front of her sweatshirt and came out with the dirty bowl that Rith had mentioned.
"I'll take it in, then be back. You rest for now, sweetie," Trio said, reaching out gentle fingers to brush Tera's cheek. "I'll stay nearby. Promise."
There was another tiny smile, and a whispered, "I know." Deep inside, she did know, and that managed to dispell a bit of the darkness that was threatening to eat her soul. Eyes fluttering shut, Tera let sleep take her, a good deep slumber that would be free of any past haunts. After all, that's what night was for.
