"Selfishness is a given, yeah," she replied with a shrug, shifting her position so she could wrap her arms around her legs, and leaning forward a little to rest her chin on her knees. "Gotta horde all your money so you can buy more stuff for you - why would you give it away to poor people? That sort of thing. They don't actually care that much because it's not affecting them, that's not happening where they live. And you know what? Even if it was, they'd probably be more likely to pack up and leave than try to help out. They're too good to be in less than absolutely perfectly fancy conditions." There was a time when she thought on quite similar lines, and would have considered such a course of action completely natural and actually the preferred option. It was funny how much and how quickly things could change.

Mention of enormous beds made her flop her face into her knees with a groan. "Uuuugh nobody needs a bed that big, but holy s**t they are the most comfortable beds to sleep on ever." That probably was actually not the best thing to say, she figured, but oh well. Too late now. Damn did she miss her enormous bed... "It's all just selfishness, is what it is." But hot damn did she miss her bed. None of the beds she'd been in since then hadn't even been remotely close to being maybe half as comfortable as that one.

"Man if you can go to sleep and stay asleep and wake up and not be in pain nine days out of ten, what more could you possibly ask for in a bed," Nate said, flopping backwards into the entangled mass of fabric that covered the car's backseat. He thrust his arms into the air above him and waved them lightly, "Hell, here's my bed! It's not so uncomfortable I wanna kill myself, and that is really all that matters."

With a dismissive sigh, his arms fell to his sides. "I don't care if people live their lives how they wanna live 'em. I care when they act like ********' hypocrites about it. I care when they say they care so much and then do practically nothing to back it up. 'Cause I'm sick of idiots who can only be assed to care until it isn't convenient anymore, or until doesn't make them look good anymore. ********' hypocrites."

She could've agreed, but given how much she missed her bed, she decided not to. Hell, at least her current bed was better than the last one she'd had in their tiny apartment. The brunette was about to say something but was caught a little off-guard by his admission of his car being his bed, and she frowned briefly at the interior. That didn't look even remotely comfortable - at least, not to her. "You don't sleep at home?" Wait, he still had a home, didn't he? s**t, hopefully he did, because otherwise she was about to feel really awkward.

With a light hum, she shifted once more to kneel instead, because now this was kind of an awkward angle to be in, just staring at his knees. "It kind of sounds a little like you've had to deal with people like that before, yourself," she hazarded, tilting her head a little as she focused on him instead of the interior of his car. "Maybe even a lot."

"Sometimes," he responded, moving to fold his arms behind his head. "If I have a night shift and a morning shift I don't really wanna waste my sleeping time driving to and from Ambergris, though."

He hummed lightly, in neither an affirmative nor a negative tone. "Just enough that it pisses me off," he said. "You remember my sister, Ellia? Did I tell you the story with all that?"

"Ah, yeah," she agreed, her gaze shifting down to Anastasia again. "I'm guessing that's a pretty shitty commute." She'd never been, so she had no idea how long it'd take to drive between the two.

Mention of his sister brought her attention back to him, and she raised her eyebrows a little. "I do," the brunette affirmed, "but I don't think you did, no." Or not really, anyway - he might have mentioned something about it, but she couldn't exactly remember at this point.

"Mm." He spent a moment in silence. "Short version, typical parents all 'we'll always love and support you,' suddenly redacted when sister induces a drug-related coma. Parents be like 'what hospital bills? What sister? We only have one child and he damn well better never get himself into trouble with drugs.'"

Oh, no, wait, she vaguely remembered something like this. "I think you mentioned the shitty parents thing, but not how shitty they were," she replied, her eyes focused downward again as she sighed again. "That's really ********' awful." Awful all around - sister in a coma was awful, parents trying to disown said sister was awful, and them leaving Nate to pick up the bills was awful. The whole thing left a really bad taste in her mouth.

A hand raised enough to point at Sera in confirmation before flopping back, "Sure is. Pretty sure they know it, pretty sure they even hate it, but they sure as hell ain't changin'. People like that never do."

"Well, sometimes they do," she said, watching the hand fall back down. "Usually not unless something forces them to, though, in my experience - of which I now have plenty. I'm not even saying that to brag, either, because all of it was shitty and I wish most of it never happened, but wishing that doesn't do anybody any good," the girl said with a shrug. After everything that'd happened to her in the past year, she felt pretty justified in saying such a thing.

She frowned lightly, leaning up to rest her elbow on his knee and her chin on her palm as she pondered on his situation and everything he'd said. He was her friend, of that she was certain, and she wanted to help - though her capacity to do so was, with her limited resources, extremely small. "Hey, I got an idea," she said suddenly, lifting her chin from her hand, though her elbow remained on his knee for the time being. "Instead of sleeping in your car at night, you can come crash at my place once in a while if you want. Not in my bed though," she made sure to add, pointing a finger at him for emphasis. Or, at least, pointed to where he would be if he were sitting up.

"Well the threat of their eldest child dying didn't seem to do anything, so." He lifted his arms to imitate the motions of a shrug, unwilling to sit up for the endeavor.

He replied in a long, thoughtful hum and several moments of ensuing silence. "Dunno," he said at length. "Wouldn't that be like super awkward for your family? Random dude crashing on the couch."

"Mm." Yeah, no, it didn't sound like his parents would change at all at this point. Oh well; some people changed, and others never would.

"Well," she began with a shrug, moving her hand to inspect her fingernails and trying to not care as much she actually did, "nowadays 'family' is just me and my mother, and she's out a lot at work, but she won't mind." Nevermind the fact that the brunette hadn't even stopped to think of asking her mother. "I mean if you don't want to sleep on the couch, you could always sleep on the floor in my room instead. It isn't too bad if you have enough blankets, and we've got a s**t ton of those."

"Ooh, livin' the high life." He wiggled his fingers in a jocular gesture. "Maybe. Half of why I'm bustin' my a** in two different jobs is so I can pick up an apartment around Camph and ditch my ride - and then I could have a bed that I'm permitted to sleep in." A wry grin, likely unseen due to the angle, spread in his features. "But I don't know when that'll pan out, so I'll think about it."

"Hey, those are seriously high quality blankets and s**t," she countered, a smile on her face and amusement in her voice as she poked his knee again. They were, too; it was harder to sell blankets than things like furniture or paintings, or at least that's what she'd figured when her parents had moved out of their old home and took lots of the blankets and sheets but little else. Who knew, maybe her mother had just really wanted to keep those blankets. "And you can't sleep in my bed if I'm sleeping in my bed," the brunette pointed out. "And I would offer to help you out, but," she trailed off with a shrug, remembering the various times he'd caught her slipping money into his pockets at the club. Granted that hadn't happened in a few months at least, but still.

"So you're saying I should 'borrow,'" he crooked his fingers to imitate quotes, "some blankets sometime? And hey - you'd be surprised how many people can fit in a bed." He waved a hand dismissively. "I'll get there eventually. Or give up and take up work in Ambergris instead. 'Cause Arceus knows there's so many jobs there."

"If by 'borrow' you mean 'borrow and bring back later' then sure, otherwise mother would probably have a heart attack otherwise," she said with a slight shake of her head. The comment about how many people could fit in a bed didn't really mean much until she applied it to the thought of Nate spending the night at her apartment sometime, so she pointedly refrained from commenting on that particular topic and instead attempted to ignore the sudden blush in her cheeks. Instead, she shook her head a bit and added, "It doesn't sound like there's many places to get jobs there, no."
