"Hm." She chuckled. "I suppose priorities are important."

Another sigh, each one was a happy sigh. It didn't matter if Jake was terrible at massages, Sherry wasn't likely to notice. It's not like she had people rubbing her shoulders all the time or anything. She was thoroughly loving it.

"Mm. Okay. How...um...how goes everything with Chester?" She knew this might not be the most pleasant of topics either, but it was important.

Her question made him pause, and he looked away, guilt welling up inside him. How long had it been since that mission? How long was he going to make Chester wait? Mark even said so himself, if he prolonged it any more... would he even be able to bring Chester back?

His hands left Sherry's shoulders and he pulled out the daggers tucked in his sash.
Two weeks... that was the condition. How long had it been since then? Surely time was almost up, and he knew he wouldn't be so lucky to be given another chance after this which he didn't deserve.

Even now, the death lead's words rang clearly in his head:

"At the end of the two weeks you will return my weapons and anything else that does not belong to you. If you cannot prove yourself as a Hunter, if you cannot figure how, then you do not deserve to call yourself one. Remain as you are and die as you are. The price for borrowing is your public execution, which I may reconsider if you get your ******** s**t together."

Jake shivered, not wanting to know what he had meant by "public execution", but knowing Caelius...

---------------------

"It isn't defeat until everything has been taken from you, and if you own nothing to begin with, the boundary between your life and your death has absolutely no ******** significance."

--------------------

Another memory surfaced, slightly more distant but still just as vivid, and he winced at it, remembering the pain he felt, the wounds almost fresh in his head, throbbing, and he could almost feel the sand seeping into them, causing him even more excruciating pain.

Had he truly lost everything yet? What did he even start out with? Memories of his past were bleak, at least what he remembered, so surely it wasn't something he would have wanted to hold onto. And though he wouldn't have wanted to admit it during his time here, but Chester had been his closest friend; his only friend, and now he was gone too. Was that everything?

... no. There was something else. Someone else. Chester wasn't gone. Not entirely, but he had someone else who mattered just as much, and he turned to look at her now, thankful for her constant encouragement and support. Even when he had been less than helpful, even going so far as to threatening her, she hadn't given up, and stayed by his side even now. No, he hadn't lost everything. He could still fight. He could still LIVE. In its own twisted way, he supposed Caelius was trying to tell him he hadn't lost everything yet. Perhaps he was even trying to tell him not to give up so easily. Or perhaps, this was just wishful thinking on his part.

With a sigh, he pushed himself up, looking down at the daggers in his hands.
Two weeks...
With the tournament and everything that had happened lately, time seemed to pass by so fast, and he knew time was running out. He couldn't afford to waste time anymore.

"Sherry..."
He tucked the daggers back into his sash and looked at her.
"I'm sorry to ask this right after your finished that battle tournament, but could you spar with me one last time?"

GrnGriff

His silence told her as much as any spoken answer would have. Her head bowed slightly as he let go of her, and she suppressed a sigh when she heard the clink! of daggers. So things weren't going well. Or at least not as well as Jake would have hoped. Sherry knew he could be hard on himself, and she rather hoped--

Hearing him shift, she turned to watch him as he rose. If she had to describe the look on his face, she might have used melancholy, or something similar. Or maybe that was just the silence.

She smiled at him, nodding as she got to her feet. "Of course." She slipped her arms around him for a hug filled with supportive feelings. "Anytime for you. As long as it's never the last time."

Because I can.

The motion had caught him off guard, and he blinked, looking down at her, but then he let out a soft chuckle and wrapped his arms around her too.
"You know, I don't deserve you. You or Chester. I don't know what you two see in me, but... thank you."

Armagnac was still VERY adamant about this fact.

Sherry just smiled and hugged him harder. She would let him know, one day, just how Armagnac felt, but not today. Not while the weapon and he still agreed so much.

"You deserve more than you think you do. I can't speak for Chester, but I know I see someone who is more wonderful than he thinks he is." She grinned. "But I could just be biased, what with the loving you and all. And you give the best hugs." She emphasized this by hugging even tighter.

Jake let out an "oof" as Sherry squeezed tighter, but it was still comforting she felt that way, and he flushed slightly when he felt her pressed against him even more.

"I, um..."
He cleared his throat, looking embarrassed.
"Do you... want to head to the training grounds now?"

"I suppose we should," she mused, stepping back. One glance at his face and she had to suppress a giggle. He was usually adorable when embarrassed, and she reckoned her compliment had been a bit unexpected. Sherry didn't even think to blame it on the hug.

Taking his hand in hers, she stepped away, intending to lead the way. "Come on. Loser gets a back rub."

"Loser? Isn't it supposed to be wi-?"
He chuckled.
"You're just looking for more reasons to touch me aren't you?"

Sherry stopped in her tracks and whirled around, slipping her arms around Jake's back again. "So what if I am?" She grinned at him. "Not that I need a reason." Leaning on Jake was one of her favorite things to do, and though she'd never admit it out loud, she had certainly wasted no time doing it.

"Though we could switch it around to being winner gets the prize. I wouldn't mind you touching me. I just figured the loser ends up a bit more sore, and if you haven't figured it out by now I like--" Sherry decided it was a fine time to start talking and start kissing.

Armagnac wondered if they'd ever get to the training grounds.

Apparently never.

It had been meant as a joke, but he would never deny her what she wanted. Especially if it meant he got something out of it too, which he usually did.

After what seemed like an eternity, he finally pulled away, already missing the feeling of her lips against his.

"We should... probably get to the training grounds before it gets dark."
And before he changed his mind.

One day Jake would learn that jokes like that led to things like this... Sherry was often too trusting or distracted to fully appreciate some jokes. She was sometimes sad she missed out on such things. Sometimes. Now was not one of those times.

Armagnac was nothing short of exasperated.

Sherry smiled. It would take a lot to wipe that smile off her face, ok. "We should," she agreed, stepping away and taking hold of his hand again. "We can continue discussing back rubs later." That was clearly what they'd been doing, yes.
