Big Mac was perhaps a little too dazed and distracted to have noticed the shadow swoop by the doorway, but the sounds around them were as clear as water.

He blinked for a very brief second as she seemed to run away again. He didn't blame her either, if he could stand up and bolt in, he totally would. Oh, standing! Right!

He grimaced as he rolled forward, swatting away the ants and biting back cries as pain shot through his leg each time. His hand then landed on something that temporarily diverted his attention. A spear head? He looked at the ground beside him to find more, including the helmets and staves. But... where were the Pae they belonged to? Panic rang through him and - with a stave and spear head in hand, he attempted to scramble to his feet.

Then she returned. His hero! Or... heroine in this case. He allowed her to quickly bandage him up - he'd fix it up properly later - and then forced himself onto his hooves. He nearly toppled, but quickly used the stave for support.

Rarity's words softly echoed into his thoughts. Dying here? "Eeehy-Yup!" he agreed. He didn't want to die here either! Even though they were stranded, for the most part, he would definitely feel a hell of a lot safer inside the cave where he'd be forced to fight off any impending doom one by one.

He hobbled, though quickly, only halfway ignoring the pain as he moved. Once at the entrance, he ushered her in and hobbled in after her. He then propped himself up beside the entrance, far enough away to not get immediately grabbed but close enough to clobber whatever may come through that door after them with the staff he'd picked up.

After Rarity was ushered into the cave, she bit her lip and held her breath for a moment, listening to the sounds outside. The swooping shadows casting eerie figures on the canvas draped across the entrance.

Making up her mind that Big Mac could not do everything by himself, she let out a deep breath, clutching the knife in her hand and inching closer to stand next to the injured red stallion. "Never fear.. I'll show them not to mess with a lady!!" she exclaimed.. before gulping. She hoped it wouldn't come to that. Maybe they'd have taken the hint and buggered off.

Still, she remained as poised as she could bring herself, still slightly using the injured Big Mac as a semi buffer, pointing and trusting her knife in the air at every shadow or sound that continued to usher forth.

Minutes dragged by but it seemed as if whatever was outside their cave was planning on staying outside. With a pained grunt, he slid down the rock face until his rump hit the cold floor. He grimaced a bit and shook his head, thankful that his pack was a mere arm-length away.

He snatched up his pack and rummaged through it until he found his first aid kit. He worked quickly, biting back the pain and whatnot as he unwrapped it, lathered on the salve and wrapped it in a bandage. His jaw began to hurt as he continued to clench his teeth tightly through it all, but he made it. All the while, he kept a watchful eye on the door, staff at the ready in case the canvas flaps would shift to suggest an intruder...

He withdrew his blanket from the pack and returned the rest of the contents in it quickly before tossing it in the general location of his ankle and (with some effort and another pained expression) lifted his injured leg up on it in attempts to keep it elevated.

After a moment or two, he regained himself and gently placed a hand on Rarity's wrist. "Go and get some rest, Miss Rarity. I'll keep watch tonight." he offered in a surprisingly calm tone. He then rested his head back on the wall of the cave, eyes turned towards the opening and readied a grip on the staff within his lap.

Things seemed to be calming down, but she was still on high alert. She gripped the dagger in her hand and flailed it one last time at the entrance before deciding all was good. She put her hands on her hips in a sassy manner and nodded her head with equal sass. "That should show them!" she said defiantly, though inwardly she let out a huge sigh of relief.

She slid down the wall next to Big Mac, setting down the knife and gently looking over his ankle. "You poor dear. You should be the one to rest, I'll keep watch for a change." she smiled and fussed over his bandages, making sure his foot was still alright and quite attached. She then picked up the knife and held it carefully in her hands, inspecting it. She had never really held one of these before.... the sensation was quite overwhelming to say the least.

Another sigh escaped her lips. "You are not going anywhere alone from now on, do you hear me Mister?!" she scolded him, giving him a rather serious frown... which she could only keep for so long before her features softened into worry and exhaustion. She gently reached over and brushed a bit of his frazzled mane from his eyes, feeling his forehead for any signs of a temperature.

The last thing they needed was him getting sick and a serious infection.

Big Mac smiled softly.

"That's mighty generous of yah, Miss Rarity," he started, but then couldn't find much of an argue to retaliate with without making himself look like a complete a**. But perhaps...?

"I think I'll take first watch anyhow. I seem to have hit my head a bit in the fall. Gotta make sure I don't end up with a concussion?"

He wasn't lying entirely... Now that the majority of the excitement had dissipated, he felt a gentle throbbing in the back of his head. Not exactly the best of sensations, but far more welcoming than the gash in his calf.

This only made Rarity frown more. "What on apples farm were you thinking then Big Macintosh!" she scolded him more, peering at him with stern eyes.

"Leaving a lady all alone in a strange cave. I could have died!" she paused and then gasped. "Or worse! I could have broke a nail...." she said and immediately looked down at her nails to make sure this wasn't the case. When she found all was well on the manicure front, she let out a breath of relief.

"That's not to mention your now hurt. There are crazy things out there only Celestia knows what.... and I highly doubt even she does at this point. " she ranted on, feeling finally over the edge and irritated about just what all was happening to them. "Why when I see those fairies again... oh when I see them again... why I'll... I'll... " she paused, her features twisting into a scowl, her mouth wise as if she was about to let out another ungodly scream....

.....

..... and then....

She got up, ran over, picked up a blanket, spread it nicely down on the ground of the cave and ......

His face skewed into a somewhat confused shape. What was he thinking?

However, a part of him understood her frustration and worry. He sighed and shook his head, not really wanting to start any sort of argument. So for the moment, he remained quiet. His features fell a bit, visually, as he didn't particular do well with scolding. He was the good apple in the family. Pun also intended, of course.

And there were a few things he wanted to express to them Fairies too, if he ever got the chance! Though, honestly, he really didn't much care for meeting them again if he could help it. Once he got his hooves back on the farm he built back up, he had all intentions of staying there. No more trips unless it was absolutely necessary...

His ears perked as Rarity got up and moved, continuing her tangent with a bit of a tantrum. He wanted to express the same sentiments - though his tantrums often looked like he was plowing a vacant field over and over again with a stern look on his face - but at the moment was a little prohibited due to the current circumstances.

He sighed, waiting for her flailing to cease just a bit before he opened his mouth to speak.

"I was out to make sure there was nothin' dangerous going on around us." he started, turning his head towards the doorway again. "It got darker than I had thought it would quicker than I had anticipated and I guess I tripped on a root or somethin'. But I had a clear view of the cave the entire time, Miss Rarity. Nothin' would have gotten yeh on my watch..."

She was far beyond promises tonight, though they still meant something to her. Him getting hurt was the last straw and she was far beyond done with this jungle as far as she was concerned. He didn't need to get himself hurt anymore on her account.

Rolling over after she had gotten everything off her chest that she wanted, she sat up, scooped up the blanket and wandered back over to Big Mac. Shaking the blanket out to get dust off it, she then spread it over the rest of him and sat back down. "I just want to go home now.... Not even Equestria anymore... to the tree. I want to go back to the tree."

She sighed, bringing her knees up, draping her arms over her knees and resting her head in her palms. "I do wonder what Sweetie Belle and the others are doing right now....." she questioned aloud, hoping they were all quite safe in the tree. She then half laughed. "Next time I ask you to come on an adventure with me, tell me no and lock me in my room!" she teased, looking sideways at him with a sly smile.

He found himself blinking a bit as she gave him her blanket. Didn't she need it?

He listened to her a moment, his thoughts going back to Applebloom. He wondered if she was ok. If she managed to stay near to the Fairies and not get separated. He frowned a bit and nodded idly towards Rarity's desire to go home. He wanted to go home too. Make sure everyone and everything was ok.

He then half grinned at her demand, to which he nodded in full agreement to. "Eeehy-Yup!" he responded in affirmation. There was no need to tell him twice. All he'd have to do is remind her of this whole ordeal and she'd lock herself in for sure.

He sighed with a bit of a chuckle at that thought. Rarity was such an odd mare. But one he was more than happy to know. He turned his head, seeing his own blanket beside him. Grabbing it up, he shook it out and draped it over her, wrapping her shoulders in it so she wouldn't be left without any sort of warmth for the night. He then wrapped his arm about her shoulders and pulled her in for a gentle hug.

"Get some rest now, Miss Rarity..." he offered again. This time in a whisper while rubbing her shoulder a bit.

When he covered her up and suggested rest, she felt a yawn coming on, one she couldn't resist. She hadn't wanted to sleep, not with the possibilities of creatures still prowling around the cave but she was so darn exhausted. Sleep didn't come easy out here.... and even if just a tiny bit, she felt quite comfortable just then.

Yawning her dainty yawn, she leaned into the hug and let her head fall on his shoulders, her eyes fluttering close. "Sounds... like a good plan.... just don't.. get any ideas..." she half smirked, letting lose another tiny yawn before snuggling into the blankets.

He smiled a bit at that. While the stallion in him probably would have at another time and place, he had too much on his mind tonight to even consider such lewd acts. Not that he would dare try them in the long run.

He sighed again and rested his head back, eyes falling to the doorway again as he kept vigil. The night drug on and the sounds outside were... to say the least, rather unsettling. But Big Mac managed to remain awake through the night.

At some point in the night their fire died, diminishing the last little bits of heat they could hold in the cave. Where they were stayed warm though, with the pair of them huddled together and under blankets, they kept warm enough to not shiver in the night.

It wasn't until the morning birds began to sing outside their cave did Big Mac chance dozing off. His ears remained on high alert though, any sound that was even slightly concerning made his ears pivot about in his mane.

Rarity awoke the next morning feeling somewhat more glorious than she had before. She yawned and stretched, careful not to wake Big Mac who seemed to be resting at her side. She smiled and slid the blanket over his legs and got up, heading cautiously over towards the exit.

Pulling back the canvas, she peered out for any signs of shadows or creatures before taking a step back. She held her breath, casting a quick glance at Big Mac to make sure he was still asleep before she burst out of the cave exit, arms and legs flailing about in the air in some sort of pony karate.

"EEYYYEYEYEYEAAAAH!" she exclaimed for good measure, taking a few more random jabs at the air and near by trees before deciding she had scared everything off with her lady like wonder and placed her hands on her hips with a proud nod of her head. "Serves them right!" she smiled boldly and clapped / wiped her hands against one another as if to say she was done with them.

Grrrrrlllrglrlgrllrlgrlglrgrlrlllrglrlgrlgrlgrlgrlgrlllllrrllrrrrrrrr

Her stomach growled. Flushed, she clamped her hands over her abdomen and sighed. They were going to need to find some real food soon.... they had eaten the last of their fruit, she was fairly certain. Where was that darn river when a gal needed one? Or rescue for that matter....

His ears pivoted to her movements yet his eyes remained closed. His body seemed to soak in the sleep he so desperately needed, yet allowed him to stay away of the things going on around him in the process.

Warmth soon greeted his legs and he smiled faintly at the sensation. His leg had ached and throbbed throughout the night, making it easier for him to remain awake as long as he had.

However, rest didn't last long as Rarity seemed to yell out something as she charged out of their cave. Did she see someone lurking about or something?!

He sprang up rather quickly, the adrenaline that suddenly sped through his system making it mildly possibly until he collapsed backwards against the rock wall. 'Curse my leg...' he inwardly shouted at himself then quickly hobbled himself to the doorway and flung open the canvas. His eyes flashed back and forth at the clearing before him only to settle upon Rarity as she dusted her hands off in triumph.

Relieved, he slumped in the opening, putting all his weight on his good leg and on his shoulder as he leaned into the rocky shelter. The arm holding the staff dropped limp at his side (though still held the staff).

"For the love of Saplings..." he half muttered in place of cursing. He was against saying such things himself, so colorful tidbits like he just said were what he preferred.

Rarity spun around as soon as Big Mac came out, looking quite embarrassed. "Bic Mac! Why.... what are you doing up?" she flushed and half laughed. "I was... eh... ehehehe... ah... keeping creatures at bay... so you could rest." she fidgeted.

Rubbing the back of her head, her stomach grumbled again, loudly, which made her flush anymore. "Eeehhhhrrrr..... I think we may need to find some food." she said, at risk of stating the obvious. But could he even walk? Or were they stuck here till someone came and found them? Or maybe she could go find some food and bring it back to him while he rested... maybe he'd have strength to continue to the river after he ate and rested?

It seemed highly unlikely... but what else could they do? Sitting ducks didn't sound like too pleasant of an option...

"Would you like me to try to find us some fruits? There has to be a berry bush or something around here..."

Big Mac was silent for a moment and ran a hand through his mane in thought. Using the staff he held for support, he limped his way out into the small clearing to look around. There weren't any bushes in the immediate area, and as much as he hated to say it, he couldn't travel well in this condition. If they managed to make it to the lake by tonight it'd take them another three days or more to make it back to the tree at the rate he was hobbling. And he sure as hell would never ask Rarity to consider pulling him. She was no work horse...

He looked down to his hooves. Beneath where he stood was where he had fallen the night before. The spears and things looked far more ominous in the daylight than they had last night. He felt a soft shudder of dread fill through him. Something bad had happened here. That was for sure. And he didn't like how it looked. However... this could help them a bit with some sort of a defense system if he could work it up.

"There's a couple of Bananas left in my pack." he started as he grunted in the efforts of leaning down to pick up a shield. "Eat half of one then go get more firewood. Lots of it. We're going to have to make a fire and keep it going if anyone is to find us and soon." He made a mental note to eat the other half later before too long.

He looked down at the shield in his hands, clearly in deep thought.
