Ian was laughing even as Shiloh was shoving his face away. "What?" he asked innocently. "It's a perfectly reasonable name, are you saying you don't like my name, Shyduck, because that would just be plain rude, I hope you know."

A part of him was still slightly tense, but the other part of Ian (the larger part, fortunately) was feeling pleased that things were feeling as comfortable as they had been three days prior. He worried irrationally (and stupidly) that doing anything he normally did - namely flirting, if he were being entirely honest with himself - would result in that awkward tension again, but this was new territory, and he didn't want to mess it up.

And he was going to attempt to keep it steady for as long as he could.

Ian gave Shiloh a mock outraged look. "If I told you then I'd just be giving you ammunition, Duckfoot," he said, and then promptly got a mouthful of his own shirt as the duckfoot in question threw his own shirt back at him. Pulling it down away from his face, Ian jabbed Shiloh in the side with one finger.

"Okay fine, so...I just have to do...more sweet talking then," he said, fighting to hide a smile at the terrible pun as he tossed the shirt back at him.

“Duckfoot! That’s even worse! You definitely owe me at least one nickname for that,” he groaned. He squirmed away from Ian’s finger poking at his side, grabbing the shirt lobbed back at him and rolling over. Shiloh scooted farther onto the bed, wiggling his feet at Ian.

“Do they look webbed to you?”

This was easy. At least, it was easier, definitely, the light banter that didn’t really accomplish anything except the kindling of an unspoken camaraderie. It was his own defense mechanism, but so far, he’d yet to hurt anyone with happiness. Ian seemed more at ease too, and Shiloh felt better. He hadn’t intended to cause Ian so much grief over what he’d said the other day, and admittedly it wasn’t very fair of him to ask the Mist hunter to own up to his feelings, when Shiloh wasn’t at all ready to face his own.

Pleasant chitchat was definitely easier.

He caught the shirt before it hit his face this time, giving Shiloh a look that clearly indicated he totally did not owe him a nickname for that. Still, Ian gave a small, resigned sigh, curling the shirt around his fingers.

"Okay, fine," he said. "There's just 'E' or sometimes my older sister would call me 'Izzie,' which I always found to be terribly unflattering most of the time."

He wrapped the shirt up and snapped it lightly at one of Shiloh's feet. "Yes, they're totally webbed, and so are your hands, which makes you a Duckfoot. Or Shyduck. Or Shybean. Or maybe Sunshy, since you're pretty damn cheerful and bright."

Ian shifted on the bed so that instead of sitting sideways on it with his legs dangling off, he was sitting fully on it, except his feet were up near the pillow, facing the opposite direction as Shiloh was. And it felt...comfortable, thankfully, and not awkward.

Awkward because he'd made it awkward. Ian pushed the thoughts from his head. The shirt he was wearing - namely Shiloh's, because he still hadn't made an effort to give it back, stretched a little as he leaned.

"So tell me, friend," said Ian, still toying with his own shirt. "What exactly do people do when they're friends? Hang out? Rob a bank? Create mayhem and chaos?"

“’E’, huh? Izzie… Naw, I think I still like Ian better. I guess you can keep your name, for now- hey!”

He yelped as the shirt caught his toes, then laughed, pulling his foot up and away from Ian. The other hunter made him groan again as he rattled off even more nicknames, and Shiloh’s foot didn’t stay away for long, and he playfully shoving Ian with it.

“Well, see how you like them now,” he smirked, nudging Ian until he ceased with the names. Then he let up, staring at him curiously as Ian posed his next question. It was so strange to him, to not know what friends did. It seemed second nature to Shiloh, being around other people.

“Robbing a bank is the first friendship initiation rite, didn’t you know? But there aren’t exactly any banks around so we’ll have to settle for hangouts and mayhem. Why, did you have anything in mind?”

"Yes, good," said Ian, in a very matter-of-fact tone of voice. "Ian is a good name in and of itself, and should stay as such because any and all nicknames involving it are awful. Besides, it's just as well," he added with a grin, catching ahold of Shiloh's ankle as the other pushed him, jabbing his foot before letting go.

He gave the other a somewhat embarrassed look when Shiloh stared at him, his cheeks flushing. "What?" Ian asked, a tad defensively, because he was still new at this, still awkward, and he felt rather stupid altogether - but then some of the tension in his shoulders eased a little.

"Okay, so we just need to find something to do that doesn't involve breaking and entering," said Ian, waving a hand.

There was a pause.

"Not...really," Ian mumbled, mostly to his feet, because he'd looked away from Shiloh now. "It's, um...well, I just don't know...what people do, really. I was the kinda guy that would go out, have a drink, maybe hit a club or two after bar hopping, but obviously we can't do that here."

“Friends can do that!” Shiloh exclaimed, grinning as he sat up. “But oh, yeah… That’s right.”

There was definitely a lack of extracurricular activities on the island that didn’t involve work, and Shiloh was entirely certain that alcohol wasn’t readily available. At least he hadn’t thought to bring any, and in terms of food and drink and all social activities related, he relied on the cafeteria. It wasn’t a promising place.

He held onto his feet, pulling his legs closer to himself while he thought. Shiloh came from a place where the only bars were the ones that had the sports channels on constant replay. Clubs were for the big city dwellers, and he curiously snuck a glance at Ian, wondering if that was where he’d grown up. Then he blew out a little sigh, because being the one who grew up in the middle of nowhere, he should be able to come up with at least a few ideas. But it was so hot, and farming or training wasn’t exactly what he thought of as a way to unwind with friends. And then again, it’s not like he’d done anything particularly interesting at home either.

They could go hang out in the lounge, he pondered, but that involved moving and then once they were there, the same problem presented itself.

“Friends can do anything,” he reasoned out, more to himself than anything else, but he answered Ian’s qualms as well. “There really doesn’t have to be special things, it’s just doing everyday stuff or anything really, with people you care about.”

He looked up at Ian, smiling. He felt a little childish with his answers, but he continued anyway.

“It’s like, well, I guess there isn’t a whole lot to do here, but if we had actually gotten to training together the other day, I guess friends would do that. Or if there was something mundane you wanted to do, but you were bored and wanted someone to do it with, you could ask a friend. Or anything! What did you do when you weren’t bar hopping?”

He gave Shiloh a wan smile. "Yes, well, there aren't exactly any good clubs around here," Ian said with a small laugh, shaking his head so that Naomi's earrings glinted briefly in his ears. "It's not like I can just get in my car and go out, there are boundaries and rules and duty shifts that involve a great deal of walking around..."

He picked at a stray thread in his jeans, drawing one leg up closer to him. "Well, one day," he said, pointing a finger at Shiloh. "I'll take you to a club and we can have a little fun. Once we figure out how to take vacations around here, that is. I heard tale that trainees can leave the island every once in a while, but it's pretty rare."

With people you care about.

Such a strange, foreign concept because there had only been one person in the world that Ian had held deeper feelings for, and that person no longer existed in this current world. He knew, somewhere in his head, that there were different levels of caring, but so far he had yet to get himself under control long enough to understand them.

"When I wasn't bar hopping..." Ian thought for a long moment.

"I like to read," he said finally. "Books are a constant thing, I read a lot, especially in college. But that's kind of...a solo activity," he added apologetically. "Not really something you can do together, unless you just want to sit in silence."

He tapped a finger against his leg. "One time my ex-boyfriend tried to get me to cook him dinner, but that was a disaster, since I have no idea how to cook; I've lived mostly off of fast food for the past few years."

Shiloh’s face lit up, going to a club would be fun. Lots of people and dancing, it would definitely be a nice break from the seemingly alternate reality that was Deus. The island was so different from home, and as Ian had pointed out, its boundaries were limiting.

Still in some ways, boundaries were entirely lifted. Ian spoke about reading, and then in the next sentence he made a comment about his ex-boyfriend as if it were nothing, like it was normal, typical, the sort of thing that happened everyday. The word caught in Shiloh’s ears, and he did his best to hide his wide-eyed expression, wriggling around to retrieve the manual he’d been trying to read earlier.

“I guess its good we have a cafeteria here then,” he said while searching. “Dorm rooms, cafeteria… Is it like being at college again?”

The book had fallen between the bed and the wall, and Shiloh, after taking a moment to compose himself, pulled it out with a grin, shoving it towards Ian.

“Here. It’s not solo if you read it to me,” he beamed. The manual, “Introduction to Laboratory Equipment’, was simple enough, but unlike Ian, Shiloh had never been much of a reader. It wasn’t that he couldn’t read. He just found it particularly difficult to sit still long enough to get any reading done. It wasn’t likely that having someone read it to him was going to make any difference, but at least it was something.

He had done it as sort of a test, really.

Shiloh had already proven himself to be the forgiving sort, for which Ian was grateful for, but he had also seemed the tolerant type as well. He hadn't gotten mad at Ian for kissing him, but instead for acting like an a** after doing it, which said something.

Ian had watched Shiloh's face carefully, deliberately keeping his own expression calm, idly twisting the bracelet around his wrist again.

"Basically," he said with a laugh. "Though admittedly the dorm food was marginally better."

He tilted his head, trying to see what Shiloh was reaching for, and then raised his eyebrows at the manual before furrowing them together, reaching out to pluck the thick text from his fingers.

"I'm pretty sure I could find you a better story than this," said Ian with a laugh, but he flipped through the manual with his eyes scanning the pages with vague interest.

"What is this for, anyway?"

It seemed like very quickly the tables had turned, and now Shiloh was the one finding Ian very curious.

“If you have something better, I’m all for it,” he said, watching Ian as he flipped through the pages. He was now thinking that there was an abundance of stories Ian could share with him, from a world that he’d never experienced except in the form of terse words and intentional ignorance. But curious though he was, it wasn’t exactly a subject easily broached, and as usual, Shiloh wasn’t sure he was ready to breach it. Ignorance was easy, denying himself was easy, and pretending to be happy was very easy. Exploring new things was easy too, as long as those things didn't poke beyond the scope of his happy façade. Dealing with everything else, easy. Figuring himself out, immeasurably difficult.

“That’s for work,” he added. “I didn’t go to college, and high school wasn’t exactly recent. There are a lot of basics I should brush up on… But I would rather learn by doing. I just picked it up because I thought it might be something to pass the time but considering it ended up behind the bed, I am sure you can guess how well that was going.”

To be quite honest, Ian was not usually the type of person who craved being the center of attention. He was the type to move subtly through the crowds, picking and choosing who to talk to and what to talk about - and how long to talk about it, since he got bored easily.

But fortunately for the both of them (and Ian was grateful), he had yet to be bored of Shiloh, and it was, in fact, quite the opposite.

Ian glanced up, giving him a slightly curious look. "Learning by experience is much more preferable to just reading about something," he said lightly, and smiled a little crookedly. "I've always found that hands-on is better than just standing by an observing, but at the same time I am, alas, extremely lazy, so motivation also plays a rather big factor."

He shook his head, his hair flopping about his face, and Ian pushed it aside distractedly, skimming the manual again.

"Well, I'm not sure I can help much with this," he said, and smiled at Shiloh. "But I'm sure I can come up with some fun stories on my own to tell you that are more interesting than - " He squinted at a random page in the manual. " - 'Examine Diagram A and then analyze the fixtures on Sub Clause B.'"

Shiloh nodded.

“Yeah, it’s always way easier when you can get your hands around something tangible. Theory is okay but practice is much better. More fun, too, right?”

While the heat had turned Shiloh into a lounging sloth, he typically wasn’t hard to motivate, always eager to dive head first into things. Well, most things. Being pushed face first into something was entirely different from diving into something. He couldn’t help but smile a little, even if it hadn’t ended particularly well, Ian certainly had already demonstrated his preference for a hands-on approach. Idly thinking about it, he subtly mirrored Ian and touched a hand to his own hair, still slightly crimped in places from leaving the braids in for so long.

Then Ian was speaking again, and Shiloh whined loudly at the sentence the Mist hunter read from the book, covering his ears with a laugh.

“Yes, please, anything but that!”

There was amusement in Ian's eyes, but he tried to tamp down on it, clearing his throat a little, though the smile on his face was a little less smirky than it had been a moment before, more gentle. He flipped a few more pages in the manual.

"If you do it right, practicing is the most fun," he said lightly, and then tossed the manual over his shoulder. It landed with a floppy sort of crash on the floor, where it lay half open beside the desk.

"Okay, fine," he said. "A story. Let's see..."

He thought for a long moment, and then said, "Okay, here's one. I have three older sisters and an older brother. I was always trying to catch up to them, play with them, but they would never let me. I remember this one time, while Nadia (that's my oldest sister) was taking a nap, I snuck into her room and drew smiley faces on all of her CDs because I thought it would make her listen to me instead of them."

Ian shook his head, laughing a little at the memory. "Nadia was so pissed, she went straight to our dad, who made me work to earn money to pay for new CDs. But Nadia was a little nicer after that, so maybe it worked, maybe it didn't."

Shiloh stared past Ian, watching the book land with a thud on the floor. He wondered if he should retrieve it, and set it on the desk, but thinking of the probability of him ever opening it again, the floor was probably as good a place as any. He nodded, and smiled broadly at Ian’s answer, not aware of any implications their conversation about practicing might have.

Instead, blissfully unaware, he settled in to listen to Ian’s story, watching the other hunter with interest. He tried to picture Ian as a little kid, and he laughed along with Ian at the thought of him doing something so silly. Shiloh wondered the Ian sitting in front of him now would do such a thing. The Mist hunter had been down on himself a lot, but there had been light-heartedness too, after all, not anyone just sat in the middle of a training field and braided another man’s hair. Shiloh smiled, and decided to make not to let Ian in possession of any permanent markers.

“I’m not sure about your reasoning, smiley faces, really?” he grinned. “But it seems like it worked, even if just a bit, eh? Siblings can be such pains.”

"Weeeellll," said Ian, rolling his eyes. "I had thought that making her CDs smile at her would make her happy and in turn make her more opening to play with him - which was sort of the outcome, except I spent the rest of the summer mowing the lawn, which I always hated."

He smiled at Shiloh, but it was slightly faded at the ends, as though the rest of the memories weren't as lighthearted as the first. "Yeah, well..." said Ian, a little quieter. He pulled at a thread on Shiloh's blanket, idly twisting it around his index finger. "Siblings will pain you, that's for damn certain."

He gave a cough, not wanting to the conversation to grow too serious, and flashed a smile back at the other. "What about you?" he asked. "Got any fun childhood stories you wanna throw out?"

Ian adopted a deadpan expression. "I can only keep you entertained for so long, you know, now it's your turn to entertain me, Shyduck."
