He tilted his head.
Reminded her of him? Connection?
He looked down at the necklace that hung around his own neck, wondering if it was because of this. Was this a gift from her? But if it was, wouldn't she say so? Why a cross though? Was it because of his name?

The questions were pushed aside when she answered him, and he smiled.
"Is that all? I'm sure there's more that you like other than jewelry."

Sherry was looking at him, trying to figure out what he might be thinking. She was glad he was here and talking with her, but it was a little strange, a little painful, though her hopes kept rising. She just had to have patience. It wasn't his fault, was it? He just didn't remember.

His smile caused her to smile back, a little more relaxed. She thought for a second. "I...suppose there is. ...When it comes to food, I like waffles with strawberry jam. And I liked whipped cream." The island had crap for food right now so she shouldn't think about that. "I think the night sky is pretty, and I like cute fluffy animals. Um. I like helping people, which is why I spend time in the infirmary." It was always a little hard to think about such things when on the spot. Not to mention, she couldn't tell him that she liked him this time. Not now. So she smiled at him. "Does that answer your question? Kind of?"

Though he tried, he felt as if his presence was hurting her more than helping her, and it made him sad that it had ended up this way. Would it have been better if she ended up forgetting him instead? Would he still be trying to win her affection back if she had? He couldn't help but feel that perhaps... she really was better off without him. It hurt her enough that he was trying to remember, and despite his efforts, nothing was ringing a bell.

"Perhaps when portals are up, we could go out for waffles. And I suppose we can probably watch the night sky from here, considering the sky's been cleared."
He realized what he suggested sounded as if... he was asking her out on a date, and flustered, embarrassed he was suggesting such a thing. Even now, just being here seemed to hurt her. Who was he to make it worse by spending more time with her, especially when his feelings weren't what they were before?

"Ah, I mean... you can go with a friend, I'm not suggesting that we..."
He really needed to learn when to stop talking.
"...Sorry. I can leave if I'm making you uncomfortable."

Sherry blinked at him in surprise. Jake suggesting they go somewhere? That was a bit of a new one, though to be fair he seemed rather confused with this whole memory loss thing happening anyway. But even Jake with his emotional guards down had only suggested anything like a date once, maybe twice. And this... her heart fluttered even though she told it not to.

She looked to the floor when he flustered. "Oh, no, of course not, I get it." He was being nice, being friendly. He'd never suggest anything like a date, especially when he didn't even know who she was. Heck, he was probably here out of pity for her; she knew she'd been pretty pitiful the day before.

"No, you don't have to leave," she said, shaking her head. "It's fine, really." She wanted him to stay, but that wasn't fair to ask of him. "Unless you're uncomfortable?"

Something about the way she said it made his heart ache, and he turned his head, staring at the floor. He was trying. He really was. But something told him that no matter what he did, he'd never be who he was before, never be the one that she had liked, the one she had fallen in love with. In her eyes, he was probably damaged goods, and she was only polite about it. But of course. How could she have feelings for him, when he clearly wasn't who he was anymore, when he couldn't even remember all the good and bad times they shared?

It hurt him, hurt him that he'd never be good enough, and he drew his knees to his chest.
"You don't have to pretend. I know it's hurting you, and I... perhaps it's just easier we forget about all this. If you forget about... me."

He didn't respond right away, and Sherry looked to Jake as he started to curl up.

For a few moments she just sat there, staring at him. Not because she couldn't find words, it was a matter of what ones to say first. "Of course it hurts," she began, her voice quiet. "It hurts a lot to be forgotten about. My boyfriend forgot about me. We weren't together long, but we'd known each other a while, and he straight up forgot about me. That hurts, deep down inside. When I think about it, if feels like there's a hole in my chest, a great big empty space that tells me I wasn't good enough to be remembered, that I didn't mean that much. And yeah, that hurts."

She swallowed, clearing the sob out of her throat even as the tears fell. "Maybe it is easier to forget. You can forget if you want. I don't want you to be here if it's out of some obligation or out of pity. But I'm not going to forget you, Jake." Her words were laced with anger and another sob was swallowed. "I don't care if I cry myself to sleep every night for the rest of my life, I'm not forgetting you. Forgetting is easy, but you mean a whole lot more to me than that."

She sighed, the anger that had crept into her voice faded a little. "I'm not pretending. It hurts, but it's not your fault. I didn't want to burden you with it. You see, I really want to get waffles with you sometime, I just know that as I am right now, I'd treat it like a date. And that's not fair to you."

Wait, she had a boyfriend? Why didn't she tell him about this? Was this why... oh.

He opened his mouth, about to tell her that wasn't the case, but then she continued and... who's to say that wasn't the case? He didn't remember the reason WHY he forgot her, but he did, but he still hoped he wasn't that shallow, that the reason he forgot her wasn't because she wasn't good enough. If anything, it made more sense he was forgetting her because HE wasn't good enough. Even after all this, even though it was clearly his fault for forgetting her, and perhaps something he might have been able to control, he still went ahead and forgot about her. She deserved to be mad, angry. And, well, he was a little surprised she hadn't shot him down, refuse to have anything to do with him.

Her words stung, and he winced slightly at them. Of course she was angry. She had every right to be. She didn't want him here out of obligation or pity, he knew that, and though he was here out of... well, a bit of both, actually, he truly did want to try and get to know her again. Something that was, on his part, entirely selfish, and would undoubtedly cause her pain.

But then she continued, and her words made his heart ache, for her, and it only solidified his assumption. There was no way he forgot her because she wasn't good enough. If anything, she was too good for him. She deserved better, so much better, and here he was, time and time again causing her trouble. When would he learn?

"But that's the thing. It IS my fault. Or was. Regardless, I was the one that caused this, and the least I could do is share your burden. Let your pain be mine. It's not fair that you have to go through this alone. If anything, I wish..."

His voice lowered, gaze cast downward.

"I wish I was the one forgotten about instead. I can't help but feel you'd be better off if you forgot about me. I seem to cause you nothing but trouble, and I'm still doing that now."

He sighed, a shaky breath escaping his lips. He wanted to comfort her, to tell her it would be alright, to wake up from this nightmare and have his memories back, but no matter how hard he tried, every piece of memory he recalled, she wasn't in it. It was as if someone took his memories, and carefully snipped Sherry out of each and every one of them; still leaving the rest of it completely intact. It was so strange to recall everything she told him, but... without her in it.

His voice was even quieter now, not daring to look at her face, afraid of what he would find.

"And perhaps, I... I did want it to sound like a date. I know it sounds weird since to me, it's like I've literally just meant you the day before, and, well... I suppose it's different for you, since we have known each other for a long time, but I'm not lying when I say I like you. At least, as a friend if not more."

She leveled her gaze at him. She wouldn't wish the way she felt on anyone. Being forgotten about was on of the worst feelings she'd known, and it hurt so much worse when someone you loved looked at you and didn't even know who you were, your whole existence forgotten. "Why would you say that? It hurts a lot to be forgotten, but I still have my memories. I'd rather miss you than not know you." She shook her head. "And I wouldn't want you to feel the way I do. The hollow I feel in here," she placed her hand on her chest, "is cold and dark, and it hurts, and I don't want that for you." The tears that fell were not just for her. She could see the pain on his face, hear it in his voice. It broke the pieces of her shattered heart even more.

She watched him. There were still too many words, too many feelings. It all hurt, every bit of it. Even the parts that shouldn't. If he'd looked at her, he would have seen silent tears. "I want another chance with you, I really do. But only if that's what you want. I don't want to cause you any trouble."

Why was she doing this? Why was she being so nice? If anything, he deserved at LEAST that much, if not more. It was his fault for making her go through this, for making her feel this way, so why...

"Sherry. Stop."
He knew he shouldn't, but he still did. He took her hands, pulling her towards him until she was close enough for him to wrap his arms around as he buried his face into her shoulder. "Please, stop. No more. Stop trying to hide it. Just let it go. Let me know how you REALLY feel, and not how you think I want you to feel. If you really did love me, then you'd be honest with me. I don't care if you think I'm going to push you away. I WON'T. I just... let me help you. I know this is all my fault, but... I want to fix this. I really do."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 13, 2013 6:28 am

She stopped and looked at him, her expression sad and questioning. She kept expecting him to leave or belittle her or both, since that seemed to be his usual reaction to emotion. It was true that he hadn't done that yet and he didn't act like he was going to, but she kept expecting it. She didn't let herself hope for what she wanted because she knew that wouldn't happen. He'd have to remember her for that.

What he did caught her off guard. Not that she'd fight it. Her eyes closed as he pulled her in, as he begged her to be honest. Jake would feel her arms wrap around him as best they could, her fingers clutching at the cloth of his top. She tried not to sob. "I don't know how I really feel," she whispered. "When I'm not numb it hurts. When I'm numb I wonder why you forgot me, and when it hurts I wonder how you could. I'm angry sometimes. At myself and at you. Mostly I'm sad." Her body shook with a light sob and she squeezed him a little tighter. Clinging to someone was so much better than clinging to a pillow, and when it was someone you trusted and cared about... Sherry sniffed. "And I hate myself for letting you know how I felt and letting you see me cry because it hurts you."

She clung a little tighter yet. "I don't know if it can be fixed. I feel broken and confused and lost and empty and alone, and I don't know what to do about it."

This was... all his fault. Even though he tried, even though he did his best to mend things, in the end.... he was still hurting her.

He only patted her back, wishing he could tell her what she wanted to hear, but he couldn't. Even holding her like this was more intimate than he had planned. He knew what she wanted, but didn't know if he'd be able to give it to her. It was too soon. Or was it? He acknowledged he had some feelings for her, perhaps, but... he sighed, lifting his hand to run his fingers through her hair, hoping the motion would soothe her rather than starter her.

"It hurts me more seeing you try to hold it in. It hurts that I'm the one who caused you all this pain, and even now... I don't know what I'm supposed to do."
His heart fell when he heard her words, and his arms dropped as his head hung over her shoulder, closing his eyes as he heard the soft "clink" of their necklaces touching.

-------------------

It wasn't an item to signify the beginning of their relationship, but their last.
He begged her to come back, pleaded, but she only shook her head, and turned away.
The necklace in his hand, he tried to go after her, but she only grew farther and farther.
In the end, the only thing he had to remember her by was this.

-------------------

He opened his eyes slowly, exhaling.
"Perhaps... it's better if we end this."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 13, 2013 7:21 pm

She shivered when his fingers touched her hair, though the motion could easily be mistaken for a sob. The stiffness that followed it couldn't. Nor could the action that followed his words.

Sherry shoved him away from her, looking at him for a moment before turning and wiping at her face. "There's nothing to end, Jake. We'd have to start something in order to end it." Whatever they'd had before was already done, and this right now was just a jumble of tears.

One hand wiped tears onto her shorts, and she wished she'd been wearing her coat and scarf. Sherry felt too exposed like this, and she didn't like it. "You don't need to punish yourself for something you don't remember doing. You have no obligation to me, and I don't want to cause you pain."

She took his hand in hers and squeezed it. There was no fake smile on her face this time. Just a sad look.

At first, he had mistaken it for a sob, but when she stiffened and pushed him away, he realized he was wrong. No, she wasn't sad. She was upset. Disgusted. How could he do something like that when he barely knew her?
... Right. Of course. There was nothing to end. He had ended it himself, hadn't he? When he forgot her, whatever happened between them had already come to an end.

Though her words were probably meant to reassure him, they only cut deep, letting him know what was done, was done. He had already let her go, so of course he didn't have any obligations. He knew she was probably saying it so he wouldn't feel like he'd have to stay by her side, but to him, it was as if she was telling him she didn't belong to him anymore, that she didn't want him anymore. Well, it wasn't like... she really, belonged to him before, but, to have her push him away like that...

He didn't even look at her as she took his hand, didn't even see the pain in her eyes. What's done, was done. He was only wasting his time here, and she had made it clear, hadn't she? She didn't want him here anymore. It was over.

"I..." He swallowed, trying to get rid of the lump in his throat. "I'm sorry." He pulled his hand away, rubbing it as he slowly got up.
"I hope... you'll find someone that'll make you happy again. I'm sorry."

With that, he turned to leave.

The way he sat made her heart ache, and she sat in silence as he took his hand back. The tears started to form again as he rose. His words open the hole in her chest right back up, and she felt cold.

Armagnac rumbled in her head.

Sherry closed her eyes. She should let him leave. It was clearly what he wanted. He'd pushed at her and forgotten her; he'd never wanted her. So she should let him leave, she shouldn't let him see her cry anymore.

The dragon in her brain was louder this time.

Sherry got to her own feet, on hand reaching out to grab Jake's shirt. "You can't leave."

Stay. Go. Don't Stay. Don't Go.
At this point, he was completely lost and confused, and had no idea what he was supposed to do, or what she WANTED him to do.

When she tugged on his shirt, asking him not to leave, he only grit his teeth, clenching his fist. He stopped, but didn't bother turning around.
"Give me one good reason why."
