"Ooo, it's kinda scary, don't you think?" Stela asked Rishima, as she clung beside him, foot around one of his forelegs. "But I know nothing will happen to you! You're not gonna let some creepy murderer get you!" Stela's eyes all but sparkled as she looked up at him with her big smile.

Rishima looked down at her with his usual unreadable expression. The girl was good for his ego, and while not his ideal mate, for she was childish and at times overbearing, he had developed a protectiveness, if not fondness for her.

"Of course not. Although I must commend the skill of this assassin - not even the royal guards could detect them, and he killed the king. It stink of an inside job...." He said only to her.

"Ooo~ Stela stood there in wonder for a moment, before breaking out in to an even brighter grin; "You're so smart, Rishima, my love! tehehehe!"

Though Rishima did worry for his sons, and even a little for his slave daughters. Although he had been ashamed hat his own flesh and blood could not catch the eye of the Great Lion, there was still the fatherly part of his heart that sought to protect them.

User Image The young lioness frowned and batted at her brother with a paw. Stupid Afrim, always interrupting her thoughts! That wasn't at all what she'd meant by her cry. She just...hadn't meant to say it out loud. That was all.

"Shhhh!" she hushed him loudly as the big purple lion came near. Fuu, the Heiress Selene's mate, gave a small smile to the two of them, but she didn't know what it meant. Was he trying to make them feel better? It must be hard, given that the King was his father-in-law.

The moment passed as the grownup moved on.

Atz'mayiy bopped her brother on the shoulder. "Don't embarrass us in front of important people!" she chided him.

User Image The Midwife came over to Meshach, one of the Princes. He was younger than she, and the black lioness thought this might be the first time he had lost someone in the family. She herself hadn't been strongly touched by loss yet in her life, but she did remember how things had been the last time tragedy struck the pride.

"Are you doing all right?" Caritas asked quietly as she came near the purple lion. She did not use a title with him, considering not only the difference in their ages, but also the fact that they were both in the high class and her own position in the priesthood.

She didn't know too many of the royal family that well, but it seemed to her that the young male needed a friend of some kind at the moment.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
User Image The black lioness allowed herself to be pushed closer towards Selene by the crowd's movements. As she came near, she heard the tail end of a brown lion with wing markings' words to the Heiress. Tyfu's yellow eyes narrowed in interest as it seemed that the male was attempting to lay suspicion on a slave. She had missed hearing the name or description, but it was certainly a gem of information nonetheless.
Briefly the lioness considered asking Gypsfulvus outright about whomever he didn't like, but that would be far too obvious. Rather, the black female allowed her features to assume an expression of grave concern and simply stood nearby, ears wide open.
User Image The grey lion looked around in the crowd, eyes settling on a familiar coloration of white with touches of blue and yellow. He recognized the lioness easily as one of his father's sisters. Avahk hadn't spoken to her too much, but that was more because she seemed disinclined to seek out conversation. Still, there was something about being here, amongst the pride, that made him want to talk to someone, preferably someone who wouldn't hold too much against him for his father.
"Aunt Ithil?" he asked softly, approaching the older lioness. "Are you okay?" It wasn't the question the younger lion wanted to ask, but she seemed so quiet and remote, he thought he should say something more innocuous in order to make sure she actually was paying attention to the here and now.
Most interesting. She'd hung back just far enough to catch some of what was being said. After what seemed like a suitable time, the red lioness made her way forward. She swept a deep bow to Selene. "My deepest condolences Princess." Nkosazana moved back to her feet as Fuu made to walk among the gathering and she gave him a respectful nod of her head. "If there is anything I may do for you please let me know."
"As for the slaves," Nko paused thoughtfully, "I have not noticed anything usual. Not that it means a great deal." She bowed her head humbly again for a moment. The recent initiations she'd attended recently had gone well she'd thought. "I could keep my ears open and listen for anything strange among the slaves." She looked at Selene and those surrounding her.
Jiang fluttered his wings to maintain his balance while the lioness went into her bow. He ruffled his feathers when she came back up, then gave the princess a bow of his own. "We are most sorry to hear this news. I also offer my services in any way I can."
Meshach composed himself as a dark lioness stepped up and spoke to him. He gave her a wan smile and a bit of a nod. "As well as can be expected at the moment I fear. Thank you for inquiring Caritas. Did you know him well?" The purple male noted as Selene's mate, Fuu, went to walk among the others. A group had gathered around the lioness. Someone to talk to would help keep him focused until it was time to return to the dens.
The young male ducked as his sister expectantly swatted at him. Even if she'd hit him, he wouldn't have complained. Afrim blinked as he was hushed, then his eyes went round as Fuu walked by and nodded to them. So surprised, he almost forgot to dip his head respectfully for the lion had fully walked by.
"Atz! Did you see? He nodded at... ooof!" The juv took the hit full on the shoulder. Afrim ducked his head with a cough. "Sorry Atz'mayiy."
Fury tore at Horae's heart upon the announcement of the king's murder. As part of the guard, and just...everything confused her. Instead of letting her heart swell with sadness, she fueled it into hatred. She knew better than to do this, but it was hard to control herself at this moment.
She stood off to the side, her eyes scanning the gathered crowd with narrowed eyes. Her body language betrayed her thoughts, and surely no one would want to approach a guard who was on such a tight string. The smallest movement against her would certainly trigger an outburst.
Her eyes lingered on one of the slaves, one that her father had befriended soon after she had joined the pride. The lioness was ambitious, but knew that she would never rise above low class. Instead of aiming upwards, the lioness had been desperate to find someone to become her mate. So desperate, that any male who may have been interested was driven away by it.
She looked relatively calm...but that didn't really surprise Horae. Shallow was the best way she could describe the slave.
Akemi's own eyes were looking over the crowd, extremely interested in initial reactions of the announcement. It had some as a bit of a shock to her, but she allowed her emotions to smooth over the initial amazement. Her mind lingered to possible suspects, but none stuck out. Oh, she had suspicions, but nothing strong enough to bring it up to anyone.
With a bit of a sigh, she shrugged her shoulders as she thought about the possible future outcomes of this. Life was not going to settle in the Mwezi'Johari, not for a long while. If Shangyue was going to find a time to take advantage of this confusion and anguish, the sooner the better.
"The slaves are watched," she answered Gyps, not bothering to hide a frown, "It is why their dens are so close to ours." It was still a valid suggestion, to suspect the slaves. But what did they have to gain from killing a king like her father? He was as kind and fair as anybody could hope for, his eldest daughter was a slave--
Amalthea! She was the one to talk to, then, if they were wanted to ask about the slaves. They had not had time to gather her, Hecate, Atlas and Kallisto before making the announcement.
Her thought was interrupted by Nko's arrival. Her eyes went onto the guard and she stayed silent for a moment. Then she looked back to Gyps.
"I need you to see if you can find the slaves Amalthea and Unyezi," she said, adding on her uncle's name as an after thought. He had been king, he never really changed just because he became a slave, he almost certainly would have been keeping track of things going on there, "Bring them here, they might be able to help us."
She looked back at Nko.
"You typically meet new members, have you noticed anything odd? Do you think there is any reason to suspect any of them?"
Orion frowned at the attitude that came from Nina but ignored it when she offered no answer to his questions. Why would it be so hard to find his grandfather, he had to suspect that he'd be front and center- hadn't he been friends with the King? It was his brother-in-law, sure, but they were old friends.. was his grandfather in danger?
He shook off the thought, nobody would target a slave like that. Unyezi didn't exactly get a lot of public attention anymore. He must simply be staying out of the way.
"I guess I don't stand a chance of finding him in this crowd," he muttered, sitting down right where he was, defeated, "Do you guys have any idea what could have happened? This is just so sudden, and the king- you don't kill a king by chance or accident. That doesn't make any sense."
No. No, no, no, no, no. How could this be? Who would want to do such a thing?
Shesha shook her head sadly, feeling the burning prickly of tears threatening to break free. Around her came the cacophony of sounds. Anger. Fear. Shock. Horror. Her heart constricted tightly in her chest and for a moment she felt utterly lost. Thoth was gone. Their king!
What would her mother think?
Sniffling her tears into a front paw, she backed away from the growing crowds, growing suddenly claustrophobic. Surely no one in the pride could have done such a thing. Everyone here was so kind. They had come here for safety. But it seemed danger was ready to spring at them once again.
She backed up another step--
--right into her uncle.
User Image
"Careful there, Shesha." Charon murmured in his soft tones. His eyes were large and sad, his whiskers drooping. And without another word he sidled up next to her and stayed close, taking comfort from her presence.
They were close, even if their mothers were not.
Zalediti took a seat and let her head hang down low. At this point there -really- was nothing she wanted to add to the discussion. The lioness felt out of place and just wanted to go to her den.
Akahana kept her ears opened wide. She heard bits and tid bits of who people suspected and even something about the slaves being to blame. The typical chatter a pride might have after their prides king had been murdered. A blue lioness sitting on her own attracted her attention. She didn't seem to have much to do with anything going on currently much like Akahana. Akahana approached this lone lioness.
"So you wouldn't happen to be responsible for the murder now would you?"
Her tone was mock serious.
Zalediti frowned upwardly at the crimson faced lioness.
"I don't know who you are but nows not the time to joke about something like that."
Even though she'd not been close to the royal family in any way it seemd insensitive to joke about a murder. Specially with it so fresh and there was no list of suspects to boot.
"I wasn't really joking. I was asking a question. Man. Try to hold a conversation and get pegged for being insensitive. Names Akahana by the way."
Zalediti stayed quiet and did not offer her own name. She was quite peeved that this lioness would joke with her when there was such a serious matter at paw.
Akahana shrugged and took a seat beside the blue lioness despite a very distasteful look from Zalediti.
Chosimba sat and listened to many lions exchanges. The lion didn't have much of a thought on the subject other than he was pretty sure that who ever done it must be in the crowd as well probably. It could have been anyone. Literally.
Astrid weaved through the crowd with gods-given grace, seeking his father's council. Through out his life the young lion had much tried to both meet his father's high standards, and be his own person. He had no doubt been father's favored son for those attempts.
"Father," He greeted Rishima, "What do you make of this situation?"
Rishima looked at his son and delivered a more in-depth answer than he had given to Stela. He knew his son was smart enough to understand, where as the lioness....well, her devotion was perhaps what kept him with her.
"Ah, I see what you mean. I'll take your advise - neutrality to the core, lest something is of our benefit, but also with nothing to lose." Astrid was not nearly as analytical as his father, though Rishima's cynicism perhaps helped his analytic abilities, where as Astrid's eyes were not clouded, or his heart as cold. Yes, he'd be depending greatly upon his father in the coming days...
Then the oblivious Stela chimed in with a giggle, "Oh, you're both so smart! But of course, I'd expect nothing else from the child of my sweet Rishima!"
The father and son shared a look that seemed to say 'the ********....' as silence fell over the three.
He was getting aggitated. There was too much sitting around for Najisi's liking, and he soon rose, pawing the ground as if to make it more comfortable. He let out another yawn, then began to walk again, heading for one of the other slaves. He soon found himself sitting down next to Akemi, not even smiling at her. "Quite an eventful night, isn't it?" He glanced around, keeping track of where the lions watching him were.
"Hm..." The brown lion sat down, brow furrowing. He then glanced at the heiress, eyebrows rising back up. "Yes, ma'am." He rose onto his paws, starting into the crowd. Amalthea and Unyezi... He was sure he could find them. At least... Unyezi. He'd gotten descriptions from a couple lions before about the former king who'd stepped down to be with his love. It actually pleased him a bit, that a lion would be willing to sacrifice anything, even his crown and kingdom, just to be with the lioness he was in love with. Amalthea would be harder to find... There were multiple lions bearing similar or the same names in the pride... And to make matters more complicated, these lions often happened to be the same GENDER while sharing a name! So there were at least two lions named this and two lionesses named that...
He began to look more earnestly for the blue-legged white lion, determined to help find the culprit.
She shook her head. "The best I can guess is that Unyezi is with his relatives.. Comforting them." She pointed toward the royal dens. "He may be in there, mourning with everybody else." She flopped down again, rolling onto her back. "I'm not sure what the pride'll do... The throne'll probably pass on down to Selene, though." She rubbed her paws on her face, trying to get the sleep out. "Uuuugh, it's too EARLY..." Clearly, Nina was NOT a morning lion.
He looked at Nina for a moment, before shoving her. "You're such a sleeping sack, Nina." Kin stood up, stretching. "Whelp, you two can chat here... I'M going to go check out what others are saying." As he began to walk, he spied Tyfu, eyes lighting up a bt. She'd joined the pride, as he recalled... If he was recalling RIGHT, anyway. There were so many lions between all the classes, he couldn't remember sometimes who had joined and who had been born in. The slave Akemi certainly looked like SHE could have been born in, with her own cloud markings. In fact, if she were a class higher... He'd have considered being her mate. While being a guard seemed to run in the blood, Kin had only wanted to hunt. It was an enjoyful activity, after all.
He went up to the black lioness, sitting next to her. "So, you hear anything new...? Perhaps why the heiress' mate is heading for that new slave over there..."
User Image "Nyeusi," the older lioness said firmly. "That is for the Guards to figure out and protect the pride from. As you are not a Guard, I strongly suggest that if you have no information regarding the murderer to offer, that you stay out of their way."
Honestly, sometimes Halili didn't know what to do with this daughter! She'd tried to raise her children to be humble and diligent, but sometimes she thought that they liked to disobey simply because they had been born with some blessing while she had none. She'd been pleased to have children born better than her own self, but the attitude was beginning to grate now that they were adolescents.
Well, it would have grated even were they still cubs, but they hadn't really developed it, Nyeusi in particular, until lately.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

User Image The younger female made a face at the ground, avoiding her mother's gaze. Sheesh! She was just expressing her curiosity! Nothing more! From the way her mom was talking, you'd think Nyeusi was the killer! Which was absolutely and utterly ridiculous.

You'd think a parent would have more faith in their child!

Well, maybe it was a mom thing. Or a slave thing. She didn't really know, but even though her mom was usually very cheerful, the things she said could be very depressing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
User Image The black lioness shook her head. Normally she might give a half smile, but she didn't want to disturb the Prince or worse, make him think that she didn't share his grief.
"No, I'm afraid that the King was never someone that I engaged in idle conversation," she admitted. It would have been...somewhat awkward, to say the least. Oh sure, she'd spoken to him, but never casually. "But my sister, Stellaluna, would have been much more likely to have known him well." Not to mention that Stellaluna was the Shaman and so it was her job to have a close working relationship with the King and Queen...whereas Caritas' duties were much more focused on the lionesses of the pride, particularly those who were or had recently been pregnant.
Which was another reason why she didn't know Meshach very well. He was not, had not been, and would never be pregnant.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

User Image "Of course I saw it!" the juvenile hissed back at her brother. How could she possibly have missed it? She'd have had to be blind to do that!

"And you'd better be sorry," Atz'mayiy retorted to Afrim. Really, brothers were so annoying. She didn't know why she bothered putting up with him! Well, okay, maybe she did. Mom and Dad wouldn't be happy if she didn't, and they'd probably spank her and send her to bed without dinner and make her miss important things like this gathering.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
User Image Tyfu sized up the male who approached her with a casual air. He wasn't a bad looking lion, though clearly a bit full of himself form the way he walked and spoke. Still, this wasn't the time or the place to be forcing someone away, and it could be informative to encourage him for the moment.
The black lioness guessed him to be born into the pride, since he bore markings similar to many others she had seen. She didn't know how everyone was or wasn't related yet, nor did she care in most cases, but it was hard not to notice prevailing themes of appearance.
"I'm afraid I didn't hear why," she replied quietly. "But there was a lion pestering the Heiress, apparently being suspicious of that slave. Probably just a personal issue, from what I can tell." It did seem to her that the brown complainer could be the type who simply took a dislike to people and clung to that hatred with a tenacity that couldn't be rivaled. Considering that she herself didn't know who had done the deed, she was more inclined to see what happened before making judgements.
Fuu was determined not to confront anybody outright in this initial crowd, he had no evidence and no way to deal with the potential backlash of openly accusing someone of such a horrible deed. He got himself within earshot and looked out over the crowd before finally just sitting down. Najisi had gone over to talk to another slave, which was both suspicious and predictable so it didn't get them anywhere. Everybody was speculating and nobody had any answers.
He had no idea what to do in this situation.
"I can't imagine," he mumbled when Nina suggested Unyezi was off to the royal dens, "You know how the nobles feel about him, I can't imagine he'd be there."
Orion didn't have any idea how active Unyezi still was in the pride, he did far more than was publicly known.. but even if he didn't know that, what he did know was it would be very out of character to call him in this kind of situation. There were priests the royals could call upon, the slaves best option was Unyezi- at least in the opinion of his grandson.
"I don't know about that either," he said doubtfully, looking across the crowd to where Selene sat when Nina suggested she might take over, "Unless Queen Khathelela is too overwhelmed by the loss, she is technically the ruler."
Then again, she had not been able to address her pride now, sending Selene in her place. Maybe Nina was right.
Green Ever After
Taini was normally right in these kind of situations and at the moment this proved to be the case once again. Her ears perked as she heard others moving, not only that but she felt like there were others staring at her and she couldn't help but to feel a little panicked. What if they were blamed? She came here because it was the only place for her to be safe. Her mother, her sisters and herself turned to here to find shelter and now this happens? And she might be blamed for it!? You could probably feel the stress radiating off the lioness. She paused for a few seconds her tail flicking around behind her and she was about to speak before her friend beat her to it.
"Why are you always so uptight? Come on everything will be fine." Zani's voice had lowered some, she was hoping to comfort her friend some. She didn't want Taini to get more uncomfortable. Even if she was excited, yet still sad, she didn't want her friend to feel upset or uncomfortable. But yet at this point it was probably too late.
The voice of another made both of the lioness's ears perk. Taini turned nervously. She couldn't bring herself to say anything, the normally quiet lioness has a little overwhelmed. Her partner though wasn't so much. Nazani knew that Taini probably wouldn't say anything to the stranger so she spoke instead. "Yes very sad indeed." Her ears lowered a little at the idea. Although excited for the possibilities Any time anyone got killed it was a sad day. Taini waited and was about to speak until something else caught her eye.
she could see her sister in the distance and she could see that she was upset. Excuse me." And with that she was off moving toward her sibling, and her Uncle.
Shesha, you okay?"
She asked quietly.
Nko had to keep her toes from curling as the princess addressed her. Just like old times. Well almost. They weren't dealing with a royal death back then. For a moment she remembered the last royal she knew that had passed away, Alcmene. Properly in the frame of mind now the red lioness gave serious thought to Selene's question.
"Your Highness, I have not noted any violent reactions lately among the newly iniciated slaves. They all have come out of it calmly in the ones I attended. At this time, I would have to say no. There is not concrete evidence from the new slaves." She gave it a bit more thought. "I was not specifically watching for signs of betrayal. Only that a new slave did not harm themself or the nurse. If it has been my lapse that caused this then I accept full responsibilty."
Oooo that hurt! Nko lowered her eyes to stare at Selene's toes. What if she had missed some vital clue? The Queen or Princess would demote her for sure! None of the royals would ever want to talk to her again. She devotedly hoped it wouldn't come to that.
"Pardon my question Princess Selene," she cleared her throat a moment. "Would it be considered unusual for a slave to have been in that particular area should he or she have been seen?" A delicate subject considering all what had happened.
Jiang also gave it due consideration. He could find nothing to add to the lioness' report on the new slaves. None had been unduely violent. Nko's question brought him back to the present and sent his mind down another track. Where had the king been found? How easy or hard was it for a slave to get there? He felt the red lioness had posed some good thoughts. It would be so easy to lay the blame where it was easiest.
"Ah. It is a sad thing that you will never get the chance to know him." Meshach rumbled softly. There was so many things they'd never get to do now. "Thank you. Perhaps I will find some time to speak with her about him. You would be more than welcome to join us if you've free time." He gave the lioness a wan smile. Remembering could be just as hard as trying to forget. He, however, did not want to forget his father.
"How are things going for you? Do you think this will cause any problems among the expecting lionesses?" He politely turned the conversation toward something she'd be familiar with. If she needed to talk about this, he was more than willing to lend an ear for her as she'd done for him.
"I knew that. Didn't mean to say you wouldn't have Atz'mayiy. Sorry." Afrim gave his sister a calming purr. He glanced around at all the adults around. "What do you think we should do now?" The young male almost whispered. The adults appeared to be breaking into groups and talking. While he didn't want to be left out, he also didn't want to be kicked out.
Stellaluna had stayed in her grief for long enough and decided that she had to go show support for her fellow followers of the great one. Her face was solemn and expressionless as she walked slowly to where the announcement had been made. About the time she appeared; the news had been shared and the pride was all arguing among themselves. Stella felt a great amount of worry and confusion overwelming her; as she realized that no body knew why this had happened.
She felt very powerless to find the culprit. She didn't know a single soul to suspect of such a thing. She walked past many, not speaking to any of them; looking for her family. She spotted her sister Onalim and her mother and father and went to their side.
She was also trying to face the fact that the two leaders of the pride; whom she had spent many a days and nights with; would no longer be smiling ever again.
User Image
Mawu was distressed. Family had been killed tonight. Despite her position as a slave; she was content with her place in the pride. The black lioness looked dazed and confused as she sat beside her mate and her children. How could this have happened? She wasn't really listening to the conversations around her. She was more concentrative of her own inner dialog. She couldn't believe someone could have done this. Her ears flicked subconsciously at the accusations of slaves doing such a thing.
But why would they? Why should they be upset and angry at their positions? They had been chosen to be where they were by the great one above. She looked upwards for a moment, before cowering closer to her mate Uli. About the time Stellaluna approached and took her place near her family; Mawu brought her close to her.
"Stellaluna..."
"..mother... father... sister." Stella replied softly.
User Image
Onalim looked absolutely freaked out by all this. Murder? Here?! She couldn't help but cling to her younger siblings and to her family and to her friends and feel desperately afraid of everything. How could their happy home be invaded by a stranger! It had to have been a stranger. A nasty rogue who had snuck in and taken lives and left. They would never find the culprit; she felt. She had watery green eyes and occasionally released a sob of despair.
When her sister Stellaluna came and spoke to them and sought comfort; Onalim went to her and embraced her. "I'm sorry Stella." She said softly.
Selene did not look at Nko as she gave her opinion on the most recently joined slaves- but she did look over suddenly when the guard attempted to take responsibility for not noticing, visibly startled.
"We don't yet know what happened, don't blame yourself," she said, "Slaves do not typically wander far, nothing out of the ordinary was noticed tonight. And the- this incident- it took place well within the borders."
And still they had no way to figure it out. No suspicious activity, nobody acting strange, nothing at all to give them any leads. The guards who found the king certainly felt some guilt, it was on their normal patrol route and they didn't see or hear anything out of the ordinary. By all accounts, it was a very typical night in the Mwezi'Johari.. until you looked at the results.
"Our best hope is that someone saw something, anything," she murmured to Nko, looking back over the crowd. It wasn't likely that they would get any answers tonight.
Fuu was slowly coming to the same conclusion as his mate. They ought to be vigilant but nothing immediately stood out. The golden slave seemed to behave normally, the crowd seemed determined to speculate but they were primarily unfounded or broad generalizations. He looked around the crowd once more, noting that the shaman was making an appearance, and then he got up to his feet again to go rejoin Selene at the front.
What a horrible night.
Orion was shaken from his wandering thoughts when his sister and mother appeared. His eyes stayed on them for a long moment but ultimately he decided not to go bother them. His father wasn't there with them and he didn't know what to tell any of them. With a defeated sigh (and without a goodbye to Nina), he got up and dragged his feet back over to where his mate and daughter stood chatting.
"I couldn't find him, there is a lot of nothing going on right now," he muttered, leaning against Halili.
