spanishnerd99 Hmm...they're probably rascist scum. Don't sweat it. Like he said, interviewers always seem to ask the wrong people. If they asked me about Canada, I could tell them all the provinces and capitals. wink Pff, I couldn't. I don't know s**t about Canada! xd But I'm at least observant enough to know that Canada has provinces, not states, and that all of those things mentioned above (national igloo, "O Canada" being about how Canada can't do anything without help from the US, "hullabaloo" being considered racist in Canada, etc.) are obviously not true. Well, except the buffalo hunting thing. For all I know, that could be true. confused

Eccentric Iconoclast No we don't. mrgreen xD Possibly, American culture isn't as interesting to a lot of people because they either ARE American or hate America (or a combination of the two). Born American, and I do have some hate in store for your current president.. Move away! Now! Before we're emenies too! xd Mivi How many states are there in this American? I've asked a lot of people and the answers are all from 48 to 52... There are 50, but there's also those little leeches like Puerto Rico that are technically a part of them, get all the benefits, but do not pay taxes or vote, which means they aren't states. I love circulatory logic. rolleyes

cooch Hello. I'm one of the handful of people who like the United States and isn't an idiot. surprised Crazy, I know. I'm one of those! biggrin The US really is a great country, people just tend to focus on the bad stuff, or they pretend to hate the country they live in because it's the cool thing to do.

I'm an American. I don't love my country, but I don't hate it either. Much as we all like to b***h and moan about the government, most other countries aren't any better.

lili of the lamplight I'm an American. I don't love my country, but I don't hate it either. Much as we all like to b***h and moan about the government, most other countries aren't any better. I'd say most of Western Europe is better. And New Zealand. And possibly Australia. On the issue of interviews with stupid Americans - Producers, and editors have a goal in mind when they make the final version of a show. Doubtless, the interviewers went out and spoke to heaps of people, a lot of people who wouldn't have been stupid at all. But the editors don't want smart people, they want silly people, because it's the aim and goal of their show. As if people are really that stupid in America, they just like the pick the bad ones to stand out more. And oh, that survery about how most people can remember at least 4 Simpsons characters and not 4 Commandments? I'm surprised most people couldn't remember even more Simpsons characters. EDIT: Oh em jee. I just watched that Google Video clip that was linked before (dial-up, ouch). How many other countries do people think Australia is? o-0 Australia =/= Iran Australia =/= North Korea Australia =/= France I MEAN COME ON! Not to mention that guy with the board of the world map was Australian. I'm surprised he was able to keep from laughing.

Dave Oh God, is it that clip from some European TV show where they went around asking Americans on the street which country they think we should invade next? 'Cause I'm almost certain that isn't fake. sad We're not all blithering idiots, I swear! Just about half of us. sweatdrop EDIT: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1598174198017667001&pl=trueThis is what I'm referring to. I am constantly amazed by how mind-numbingly stupid some of us are. If I could, I'd lol at this.

I might get them out of order, but I know the commandments, I also know the rights outlined in the first ten amendments to the Constitution, and several other things that come in sets of ten. I can probably rattle off dozens of 'Simpsons' characters though.

I didn't say you were an idiot. =o I remember next to nothing about our constitution, but that's probably because ours was written up all hunky dory, with no war needed to set it in stone, which without, makes for a very uninteresting read.

I would like to note that it's really hard to say that a country/region is better than another scream
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA They didn't want the capita(o?)l to have federal AND state rights and powers, so they said, "OK, this place is NOT a state. It is a DISTRICT and the center of our gov't." Then the politicians moved in and it got kinda bigger... But it is NOT a state, nor is it a PART of one. If it were, it would have state rights... and that defeats the purpose of letting the states be somewhat separate from the federal government.
52.. I think that may be a bit of a joke... razz
There are 50 united States, total. There are 48 Continental united States. There are 2 "extracontinental" united States. There are a bunch of territories, including Guam and Puerto Rico (which voted NOT to join as a state, again, because there IS such a thing as Puerto Rican pride... so no, they aren't "leeches"... evil ).
Sometimes people refer to Puerto Rico, Mexico, or Canada as the "Fifty-first state". That may be why you get "52", either that or people think that there are 50 continental plus Alaska and Hawaii. I think it's probably the "we should have Canada and Mexico anyway, hur hur hur" sentiment.
I don't hate my country. I have a lot of great rights, opportunities, etc. that I wouldn't have without it. Our government can do some dumb s**t, it's true, but that's something you'll notice about governments. Not only are they run by humans (fallible), but they're run by POLITICIANS (extra fallible). Therefore, they're subject to problems. I'm kind of glad I live in a country where I, if I choose, have a say in the government. And no, that isn't BS. It's the truth. I can go to the local elections--something many people don't do, even though they can--and vote on public issues. And I'm old enough to do that now. Which pwns cool . There are so many people who b***h about Bush (who I don't like either), but DIDN'T VOTE. I couldn't vote. But they COULD. They had the right and surrendered it, so they truly have no right to b***h when the guy they don't like wins. Had all these people who gave up on ANYONE else winning voted, there's a chance--since it was rather close--that the electors would have followed the public (like they should anyway) and voted someone else into office. (though I didn't like Kerry either... confused Bah, at least Bush can't run for my first election cool )
