CHAPTER THIRTEEN – Varric

“So, why did you become a bard?”

You set down the tankard of ale you’d been drinking while keeping Varric company during the late night. When Hawke and his party left, it only left the dwarf and Isabela to talk to. Not that you minded, both were fascinating and wonderful people. But this question had taken a seemingly normal night spent between you and Varric and turned it on its head. The tankard clanked against the wooden table as you set it down.

“Why do you want to know?”

Varric tapped two fingers to his chin, seemingly in thought, but you knew he had planned this conversation well in advanced. ‘Tis was his nature.

“As background information,” he answered finally, “for when I tell the story of the voice that enchanted a thousand men.”

“And women.”

“If you so desire.”

You sighed, and began to drain down your ale. You were reluctant to tell him.

“You know,” Varric began after your silence. “I’ve heard that bard is another word for spy in Orlais.”

You nearly choked on your drink laughing. “Me? A?” You laughed some more. The thought was just too funny. “I wouldn’t know the hilt of a sword from the blade.” Nevertheless, you reached across the table and patted his hand. “Now excuse me, my dear, I’d like to keep my job.”

Later that night, you plucked the notes to your final song, a lullaby for the late evening. As its notes resounded through the minds and hearts of those listening, you packed up your belongings and headed to Varric’s room.

“Ah, Songbird,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “Ready to go, I see?”

You leaned against the doorway, looking at the ground. “My grandfather taught me how to play.” Varric cracked a smile in victory but you ignored him, mustering memories that were not yours, but as present as your own.

“He had been a traveling minstrel all his life. Maker’s breath, the stories he told, the adventures he’d seen. Fantastical tales. He once told me of a woman, with the eyes of a dragon and words that burned with every breath. She flew across the land, leaving nothing but the mystery of who she was in her wake. But my favorite story he told me was how he met my grandmother, how he presented a song praising her and she scoffed at him! She was a noblewoman. She had courts full of poets and minstrels to pen verses in her name, but she never could get the one song he sang to her out of her mind.

They eloped and saw the world together, from the cold stonework of the Frostback Mountains to the running forests of the Dalish, from Orlais to the Free Marches. It wasn’t until years later that a letter caught up to them. Her father welcomed them home.”

“Just like that?” Varric asked.

“Just like that,” you smiled.

“They were officially married,” you continued, “and had three beautiful baby girls that grew up and married into separate houses. My grandmother died giving birth to her youngest, Esmerelda, but she grew up to be my grandfather’s favorite. Like the rest of her sisters, she grew up to marry a nobleman and live life within the confines of her estate. My grandfather visited her often, but practically lived with them once I was born.”

“Must have been a good life,” Varric said, and you nodded. “So why would you leave it?”

“Why did you come to the surface?” You asked. “For as long as I can remember, he would tell me stories, about women who could fly across the land, and men who ran its lengths, and as I got older, the stories made me sad. I wanted to run. I wanted to fly.

There came a day when I knew all of my grandfather’s stories by heart, and when that day came, I realized there were no more chains. The cage was gone. So I ran and I flew.”

“It couldn’t have been easy, Songbird.”

“By no means,” you shook your head, smiling sadly. “My parents withdrew their support, revoked my family name, disowned me entirely. But my grandfather gave me his lute, and I knew that if it had carried him through all these years, it would carry me as well…” You sighed, lovingly caressing the lute to your chest. “Even today, it continues to be a symbol of hope…”

There was a brief silence between you two as the story settled into its place in your memories. Then you spoke up.

“What about you? What of your story?”

“Oh no, we’re not going to start that.” He stood up and walked to you. “Go to bed, Songbird.” He took your hand and kissed it. “You’ve had a long night.”

You smiled gratefully before turning away from him and leaving for the night.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN – Secret

“Delivery for the Hanged Man’s bard?”

You turned from the fruit stand in Lowtown’s market to face the young man. He was holding something behind his back.

“Yes, that’s me,” you began cautiously. You hadn’t been expecting anything.

“A courier, messere, at your service.” And out from behind his back he pulled out a huge bouquet of roses. Blue, purple, pink, red, a whole beautiful color scheme of flowers overcame your vision, smothering you as you took it from him.

“Oh, thank you! But, who—?”

“Ah!” he smirked. “Can’t tell you that, miss. It’s from a secret admirer.”

You furrowed your brows. “Secret admirer?”

He grinned as you opened your mouth to ask him to elaborate, but slinked off before you could. You shut your mouth as he disappeared.

“A secret admirer, huh?” You studied the flowers fondly. Not only was the color scheme romantic and sensitive, but the aroma emanating from the blooms lifted your spirits with its sweetness. As you shifted its weight in your arms, you noticed a note tied to the bundle.

”I tried to find a flower that could compare to your beauty. These roses will have to do.”

You smiled and sighed pleasantly, however your expressions turned dark as a bell chimed in the distance. The clock tower.

“s**t! Fenris!”

You ran as fast as your legs could carry you, bouquet bouncing as you hurried your way home.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN – Fenris

You showed up at your house, bouquet in hand, to find Fenris leaning against the door, head down, brooding.

“s**t, I am sooo sorry, Fenris! I was just at the market then I couldn’t decide if I wanted to buy fruit, here hold these so I can get my keys, because you know how expensive fruit is and—”

“Were you seeing someone?” He asked suddenly.

“What?” You asked, confused.

Fenris shook the flowers a bit, some of the petals falling to the ground as he raised his eyebrows expectantly.

“What? No, no! A courier came by. Gave them to me.” You unlocked the door and showed him inside. “From a secret admirer, he said.” Crossing the floor between the two of you, you caressed the petals affectionately, breathing in their aroma. “Aren’t they beautiful?”

He didn’t take his eyes off you as you leaned towards the gift in his hands. “I—wouldn’t know. Are you a florist?”

“No, Fenris! I meant just by looking at them.”

The broody elf took a moment or two just to stare at the bouquet. His gaze was so concentrated, you feared for the flowers safety and almost took them from him. Finally, he shrugged.

“I swear, you are about romantic as a bean,” you sighed.

“I didn’t realize romance was something you wanted in this partnership,” he said, smirking at you from over the bouquet.

You could feel your cheeks grow hot. “I never said—oh, never mind.” You snatched the flowers from him. “Let’s just start with the lesson, shall we? You know where the parchment is, right? I’m going to get a vase for these. Or an old tankard, or something…”

“T—tev,” Fenris swallowed hard in concentration. “Ine-tere.”

“Tevinter,” you corrected him, placing a hand on his back as you looked to him. “Where you come from.”

“Tevinter,” he repeated, staring at the word on the page.

“Right! How does it feel?” You asked, moving your hand to the back of his chair. “Does it look like home?”

“Tevinter’s not my home,” Fenris spat quickly, then seemingly realizing how rude his statement came out, he continued. “But it is strange, seeing the word that means so many things. Almost as if each letter represents an aspect of my stay there.”

At that moment, an idea came to you, and hastily, you pulled out a new piece of parchment, straightening out the edges before dipping your quill in the ink well. Quickly, you wrote TEVINTER vertically down the page. You paused before pointing to the first letter.

“What does the ‘T’ stand for?” you asked. Fenris quirked an eyebrow, slow to catch on.

“What do you mean?”

“You said each letter has a meaning. Well, what does the ‘T’ mean?”

“Tyranny,” he said quickly, as if nothing could be more obvious. You spelled the word on the page and Fenris looked at you oddly. “A ‘y’?”

“Languages are weird,” you explained. “Don’t get me started on Elvish.” You pointed to the next letter.

“Endless.”

“Vanity.”

“Immobile.”

On it went, word after word, until finally, you reached the last two.

“Endless.”

“Running.”

You set down your quill, looking at the list. Life bustled by outside, people walking past your home, talking, unaware of any lives but their own. Unaware of the immense trust that had passed between you two as you completed this small activity. You took his hand in yours, tracing its lyrium markings with your fingertips.

“Running?”

His hand twitched against yours, but he didn’t retract from your touch.

“Yes, and so long as Danarius lives, I always will be.”
