Tuck rolled his eyes so hard they almost fell out of his damn head.

"Look. The more practice I get, the easier it'll come to me. I ain't gonna fail you again, Stormy. Evan's right," he hated to admit it, "an' we both seen some bad stuff. Ugly things. We're used to it."

His voice threatened to crack. He wasn't sure he'd ever get used to the sight of the things he'd seen, his brothers ripped in half, torn limb from limb, the ugly putrescence of death.

Tuck's voice softened.

"But darlin', if it makes you feel better, you an' me got a date every day out there on that trainin' field. I'll let you beat the crap outta me, practice my defendin', work on my charge."

Tuck smiled at Stormy, dimples bracketing his mouth.

"Deal?"

This contest they were waging was silly and she was about to say as such, but their promises were enough to deter her. She needed more silly in her life anyway. "You didn't fail me before," she pointed out to them, her chest tightening at the memories. "You were still doing your jobs. That was just . . . bad luck, I guess. But I'm going to go try for promotion soon, so maybe I won't be as bad to watch out for if it works out."

< < You will not fail because I will not allow it. You cannot hunt if you are being coddled. > >

She did preen a bit at being called "darlin'", though, and clasped her hands before her while adopting a bashful look. "Date, huh? Thane is a bit big, so if you get hurt I'm sorry ahead of time . . . But I can switch between you and Evan and then we can do threesome stuff!" She wiggled enthusiastically. "I can do offense and defense and stuff like a good Mist and adapt to you both!"

Pause. "...Is our shift done yet? I wanna do it nowwwww."

Evan knew what the difference between bad luck and failure looked like. Bad luck was getting caught out in a sudden storm without an umbrella, or being one number off from a winning lottery ticket; failure was being entrusted with something--a confidence, a responsibility, a life--and coming up short. Stormy could tell him until she was blue in the face that he hadn't failed her, and he would let her keep on believing it if it made her happy, but he knew better. "A little thing like you? You're no trouble at all. We just need to keep getting better at what we do. We'll get there."

Evan fought hard to keep from laughing at Stormy's suggestions. "Oh, Tuck's a big boy, I'm sure he can handle it," he couldn't help saying, trying to keep some semblance of seriousness on his face with minimal success.

Awkward word choices aside, they were ideally suited to train together. Besides, Evan wanted to keep an eye on Stormy for the simple reason that she seemed to need an eye kept on her, just so she wouldn't get into all that trouble she seemed to think she attracted. He didn't think she was mentally incapable--you probably couldn't be dumb and also have lived as long as Stormy had--but God only knew what would happen if they had to go up against some deceptively cuddly puppy-shaped monster, or something. She was still a little kid in so many ways, a point that was only emphasized when she started whining impatiently. "I don't know about done, but I'm for anything that gets us out of pod duty."

Tuck had to cover the smile that came to his face with a broad hand, swiping his fingers down his jaw in an attempt to keep from laughing - because laughter would only bring questions, and he wasn't sure if he could keep a straight face while explaining to Stormy why he found the phrase 'do threesome stuff' so amusing.

"Yeah, Evan's right. I can handle it. Besides, even if I can't, it ain't like you gonna keep going just to hurt me." He shrugged his broad shoulders.

"I'm ready to get on outta here if you guys are. I don't think anyone's wakin' up, an' I hate spendin' more time in here than I gotta."

"You're both big," she remarked as a matter of factly, though most things did when she was only a few inches above five feet. Stormy did not comment, however, on whether or not someone would get hurt, because maybe if she didn't say anything, nothing could happen. Just the shield taking the hit. No tempting Fate with silence.

"C'mon then~" She tapped her journal with her pen and gave the pair a small smile--something more monumental than usual for her--before leading them out. Pod people could watch themselves a bit, right?

Outside it was more cloudy than usual, and summer was starting to creep in. Stormy shed her coat as they headed to the field, tossing it and her possessions to the side. "So!" She turned on a heel and clapped her hands. "How should we do this? I guess Herc and I can fight it out again while Tuck just defends whoever?" If their fight was anything like the first time she went with Evan, it wouldn't last long at all.

Evan grinned as he got up and obediently followed Stormy out of the pod room. He felt a little guilty for leaving the pod people alone, but given a choice, he would always favor training. Bonding was important, too, as well as learning how to work within your team. This was almost familiar to Evan in ways he didn't really want to think about. It was enough that they were going to help each other get better, stronger, more capable.

He unwound his scarf and removed his jacket, draping both garments over a relatively whole training dummy. Gir materialized in his hand with little more than a thought, and he looked from Stormy, to Tuck, and back again before shaking his head. "You need to learn how to defend, too," he said to Stormy. Hell, Evan was of the opinion that Stormy should only ever defend or, if possible, just stay off the battlefield altogether. "You can defend Tuck from me, and then he can defend me from you. Rinse and repeat 'til we've got it down."

Tuck ambled after the other two, Herryk summoned immediately upon his arrival on the training field.

He followed after Evan, his own scarf and jacket tossed carelessly over a training dummy. Twirling Herryk in his hand, Tuck went to stand across from Evan.

"We ain't goin' down to broken shields, now. Ain't gonna take no chances."
