The familiar indignation flooded his chest, but his mind started to worry. A tense moment, and he defensively said, a little sharp, "what do you mean?"

She didn’t reply to that, merely smiled her enigmatic half-smile.
”Tell me more about the shop,” she suddenly said, ”will your father get to cook his chickens, you think? That chicken-tender of yours sounds quite formidable to break down.”

His eyes searched for understanding in hers, but found none and so began to speak again, following her instruction in hopes that it would please her. " The chicken thing is complex - they look like they'd be good to eat but they're all named at the moment. We can't arbitrarily say which chicken is more deserving of slaughter, after all..." *******

And the next night, as soon as he could, Best was up like a shot. He sped to the familiar clearing, steps beating heavily against the well-trodden path. She was not there. He called, he sought, he covered the perimeter with a lot of rustling and a lot of noise. Hair tangled with branches and leaves, he finally gave up and sat in the middle of the glade, now more alien than ever, feeling the aching hollow in his heart until the sun rose. *******

His eyes were wide open, staring straight into the moon up above. He didn't care to be asleep, nor to be awake, but since he couldn't sleep he didn't have much of a choice. The swamp was quiet spare the usual frog noises, and the silence was overbearing. It kept him alone with his thoughts far too easily.
It was the first night in a while that he remained in his sleeping spot. It was likely he would return to that habit. Best didn't know whether to be indignant or miserable by now, and he considered giving up and just taking both.

When the silence became too heavy to hang, a soft voice drifted over from the left of him, ”Not going to see her tonight?”

There was an unusual dearth of retort in the face of the brusque command. After a pause, the voice resumed, ”Sorry it didn’t work out.”
