"Ah, good," Gabriel nodded, giving a little sigh. The illusion did not disappear, but he was reassured that it was not true. It wouldn't have been the first time he had accidentally harmed himself during a hallucination, and the pain didn't tend to set in until later. "Ah, no. Unfortunately, I can't blame the fumes, nor do I imagine a drink would help. I've been so far gone for so long, I've learned to assume it's all in my head. Thank you. I understand that I make most people uncomfortable."
Really, he generally disliked menfolk. They were violent and unpredictable. This one, though, he was... gentle. Not frightened. He almost seemed to... care? He was so large, too, and so strong! It had not been a personality trait he would have expected. Indeed, he almost felt a kindness toward this Nicholas.
"Do you often fashion toys for children? I wasn't aware upon my first visit, especially seeing so many ornate furnishings. I fear the carpenters who tend to pander to children are not... uh. necessarily the best quality."
Were Guardians equipped to gasp, Morai certainly would have. He had never really considered that there could be secret groves outside of those he was bound to wander... and what a grove this was! He gave a happy buck and did a little prance around Riven before nudging her with his side. He liked the look of the clovers over there, and he would like to share with her, if she would allow.

"Ah, I'm so sorry..." Nicholas frowned, continuing to worry as he worked. It would be terrible to deal with something like that, no matter what walk of life you came from. He returned his gaze to his work, simply listening to his friend. "It's no bother to me, don't worry." Nicholas was fairly well known as being a gentle giant in Oldcastle, to the point where many children and women would show up to bid him good morning, often looking forward to his cheery reply. "Yes, I get a lot of requests for toys, actually. Some months it's all that keeps me afloat. Not everyone is always in need of furniture, after all." He replied, smiling back at him for a second. "If there's anything you would like made, I'd be happy to. I know it can be difficult to find people." Riven relaxed a little more, watching him celebrate their arrival. Of course those clovers looked good, and she would gladly share! She wouldn't have brought him here otherwise, of course...

Gabriel held his hand up dismissively. He had not been asking for pity. It was simply a fact of life at this point.
"I dare say that you might be more busy in Palisade. There are more children, and there are more spoiled children. The nearest carpenter to the family home is of lesser quality and sometimes finds it necessary to deny orders. I'm glad to have found you, actually."
Morai released their contact and wandered to the clover, bending his neck at the outskirts to nibble tender leaves. His eyes were still on Riven. Was she not hungry? Well, he wasn't exactly hungry himself, but he could always make room for deer tea.

"If they have enough orders to deny new ones, that's surprising in and of itself. They probably charge a great deal more than they should, if I had to guess." He breathed, keeping his eyes on the sword as he continued to work on it, until he was satisfied. "There, just need to refinish it again..." He murmured, setting it down to go fetch the can. Riven followed him closely, waiting until he began to nibble to start herself, ever the shy lady. No no, she was fine, don't worry! But if Morai had any ideas, she certainly wouldn't object~.

"Ah, yes. Another reason I shopped around in Oldcastle," Gabriel nodded, "There's a man just down the road who charges nearly double what you do for a table half as intricate. I do hope you're not under-charging yourself. You really are quite good."
He watched the carpenter go and wondered if he might want to avert his eyes for the refinishing. Perhaps there would be no dark amber liquid if it didn't need staining, but it was always nice to not have a psychological breakdown amongst those who made you feel wholly normal.
Meanwhile, Morai tilted his eyes up and moved closer, giving Riven a little nuzzle and beginning to chew the clover just beside her. How dainty and ladylike! If she were a human, he'd bet Gabriel would want to have her, but hah, too bad! She was a deer! Not that she was his, of course. Not at all. Still, he'd like to keep up these visits.

“Oh him?” Nic seemed amused by his words, laughing a little more, “Yeah, he probably doesn’t take half as long as I do though. I’m not under-charging don’t worry. I make plenty enough to get by, but I don’t want to drive everyone away by charging too much, you know? As long as I get to do what I love doing, I’m fine with making enough to get by.” He really did have no need for riches. There was no wife to spoil, no children to watch out for, and frankly he wouldn’t mind if there never were. He continued to hum as he worked, quickly getting everything in place before working on lightly staining the wood again, keeping it brief and quick enough so that it seemed that it had always been that way. Just a touch of color, nothing too deep…. If she had been human she would have flushed at all of these comments! But she’d hope Morai would be human as well, so that they could continue to enjoy each other’s company, correct? Gabriel seemed nice enough though, but as long as he doesn’t turn on her chosen, she has no reason to not accept what mere affections he may offer to a deer….Unless Morai would rather do so? She eyes him curiously, nibbling daintily herself. She wants more of these visits….if he’d come to see her and have her!

Gabriel smiled softly and shook his head.
"I think it's ridiculous to expect quality product 'as quickly as possible', personally," he admitted, "Perhaps it's strange of me to prefer quality over speed. It wouldn't be the first quirk, nor the last... My grandmother, she always insisted upon the very best for her home, for her wardrobe. I've spent quite some time with her. It's possible she's rubbed away some of my Palisade anxiety."
The staining was happily without incident. A pale stain was nothing like biological fluid, and it was strange how drastically it changed the look of the wood. Carpentry was an interesting craft for certain, but one that so many took for granted.
Edgar was going to be very pleased.
Meanwhile, Morai gave Riven a little nudge in agreement. Yes, he'd certainly hope that he would be human if she were to be human, but the point was that if she had been the only one human, his Chosen would have-- oh, forget it. Yes, he would like to visit. He and his Chosen often came to see the old woman and the little boy in the estate on the edge of town. He would make it a point to come see her when they were around. As it was, he should have a few days. Perhaps she could show him what she did with her days?

"It all depends on what people want, though I want to make sure people get the best of what I can offer in a timely manner. It's no use making people wait for something I can get done in a month for three, and I'll make sure it's done well the first time." Nicholas shakes his head, chuckling. "I don't think it odd of you at all. It's good to have furniture that can last for generations to come, especially if it can be enjoyed." There was a certain warmth in his eyes as he worked, clearly holding such a passion for his work that could not be denied in the slightest. He loved his almost as much as spring flowers loved the sun, and every little stroke of the brush, every little action, showed it. Carefully he set the sword aside to dry for a few moments, preparing the varnish that would seal it from the cruel aspects of life. This needed to last, didn't it? Riven could barely restrain her shy glee at the assurance of her friend visiting, it meant something to her to have someone who would come see her again, instead of a fleeting acquaintance. She is most curious about his Chosen, if he'd mind Morai spending such time with her like this, simply taking in the sunlight and having adventures all to themselves. It's odd of her, she thinks. She often much prefers the night, to go out and be a savior to the destitute and forgotten, to give them some form of comfort....But she doesn't much mind the light if Morai is here with her.
