The dishes sorted and the blanket folded, Ami set the cooler under a tree, one that was large enough to recognize from far away. The only real threat they had was if another hunter came and stole it, but Ami couldn't see why anyone would want to steal a cooler. Unless it was Madeline. She shot a paranoid glance over her shoulder. It would be just like the girl to stalk her down like this.

That was stupid though. She kicked off her shoes near the cooler, then returned to Lex's side, gesturing to the sandy shore. "I think Marcus will be more a mess than Cass, honestly. He's a real drama queen." It was a joke, but with a seed of truth in it. She really did worry for the man.

"Hmmm well you asked the last one, so I get this one, right?" A hand went to her chin as they walked, silence breaking the conversation for a moment as Ami thought up a good question. She opened her mouth and then immediately snapped it shut, shaking her head. No, that hadn't been a good question. Hmmm.

Suddenly she lit up. "Other than Mumford," she said quickly, looking down at his shirt, then back to him with a knowing smile, "What kind of music do you listen to?" It was a seemingly stupid question, but you really could tell a lot about a person by their music tastes.

"Oh, well you took my only good answer."Lex smiled, hands dropped at his sides as he kept an easy pace, keeping his strides nice and slow so as to not leave Ami behind. A hand went to his neck, rubbing it as he thought of the music he liked to listen to.

Well...time to be open, he supposed. "Well, I enjoy genres like Mumford, but I mainly listen to pop and, um, metal music." You could almost taste the hesitation coming from Lex at that tidbit. He knew screaming men with beards and double bass drums weren't for everyone, and it definitely didn't come off as smooth. He'd stay away from it though, if he could. "I saw Imagine Dragons when they were just starting out - I think I went to highschool with one of the guys, actually." Meaning he had no clue, and he probably saw him only in passing. Still a cool fact, however.

"I'm just going to assume you're a Mumford fan too, and by association Old Crow and the like. Have you ever been to a concert?"

Ami tried to hide how widely she was smiling at the idea of Lex at a metal concert. Did he scream along with the music or something? "You .... like metal? You. Metal." And then Ami's heart grew 3 sizes that day.

A laugh- a real laugh holy jesus ********- escaped her mouth and she slapped a hand over her mouth, turning her head to keep Lex from seeing her laugh. She didn't want to embarrass or antagonize him, the image was just too funny. Suave, gentlemanly Lex with a bunch of metalheads.

She bit her lip and held her sides. "I went to concerts most weekends. No metal ones though." There might have been a stray giggle at the end of that sentence.

Lex coughed, looking the other way with a light pink dusting his face. He wasn't usually embarrassed, but something about his date laughing at him just unnerved him. He could honestly understand why she was laughing - he didn't seem like the metal type at all. He liked what he liked though.

"I'm not much into the scene, just the music. The only metal concert I've been to ended with a bottle of beer being poured on my head - I prefer the MP3 files now."

The same pink, though much redder, painted Ami's face as she realized it was actually a bit rude to laugh at him for his tastes. "That sounds dreadful. The worst I can say is a mosh pit. Ah- no I suppose my height was always a hindrance at concerts too."

Her feet squished against the sand as they walked down the shoreline. She skipped over a step here and there to avoid little rocks, tiny sticks, the occasional discarded runic bandage. It definitely wasn't as pretty as the Carribbean, but the Deus Ex shores were a fine substitute. Maybe she just liked the idea of being on a date at all.

"So if you weren't busy going to metal concerts, what did you do?"

Lex didn't mind the small rocks and sticks that he stepped on, but made sure to avoid the used bandages. What were bandages even doing on the shore line? Did people spare here? That would just be silly, the beach was further than the training fields.

His look of embarrassment faded at the next question, lips curling into a light smile. "Well, I slept through the mornings most days; it's just what happens when your work schedule is from ten at night to five in the morning. More often than not I would spend the day in the non touristy part of the city with some...acquaintances. We would go to a bar, watch rugby if it was on. Sometimes I would just walk around, or read the paper at a cafe. Exciting, I know." He chuckled at the end, shaking his head. He'd been quite the night owl when he led a normal life, but not the way Ami was.

"What about you, besides reading?"

Ami thought such a schedule was too hectic. If she had her choice, she would've been up at a lofty hour, somewhere before noon but after sunrise, and then early to sleep. Her sleep schedule had essentially had a train rammed into it when she came to Deus Ex. Now it was an erratic pulse, sometimes sleeping during the day, sometimes (rarely) at night. Some days she didn't sleep at all.

"Mmm, most exciting. I don't know if I can stand up to that," she said with a warm smile. "I was in between studying and working at a small coffee shop. One you'd read your paper at." Lex got a capricious look and she continued. "Mostly concerts, sometimes visiting bars-" A pause. Lex wouldn't care about underage drinking, would he? "Photography with- friends. Lots of pictures- I remember that most I think. Parties and get togethers for pretty much anything we could think of. I liked anywhere warm and sunny, considering winters were tundras of white."

She smiled up at Lex and insisted, "If I'm a turtle now it's because of what happened to me after that. I was quite the socialite!"

Ami received a warm smile for her little joke, and he waved off the underage drinking thing. Everyone did it, and he was fine with it. Business was business, after all, and so long as the bars made their money everything was fine.

A fond smile overtook his warm one, beaming at Ami. It was good to know she hadn't always been a turtle, but had at one point been a butterfly. "Maybe I should stop calling you a turtle, then..." He mused, smile twitching into a smirk. "Though, I don't think you'd enjoy being called a cocoon either." No, she would hate it even more than turtle. "Why not just...Ami."

"I'd grown so fond of turtle, too," she said sarcastically. A hand went out to the slide and ended up smacking into Lex's arm. "Oh- sorry." Another sought after giggle.

Ami took a breath and looked out at the ocean. "So you're a metalhead that spends his free time reading the paper at cafes and went to school with Imagine Dragons." A Pause. "And you like hummus." It was an important fact.

It wasn't the whole story though. "Anything else I should know? Maybe a deep dark secret or a murder or two?"

Lex looked off to the side, rubbing his neck at her summary of him. Yeah, that definitely didn't sound suave or gentlemanly at all, but... well, that's what happened when he didn't stay aloof, he supposed. Vulnerability was a very, very odd feeling.

"Oh, well my dad works for the mafia."

Ami blinked a few times. "Really?"

This was Deus Ex. She'd been a man a few days ago. Anything could happen.

"No." Lex chuckled, shaking his head.

Ami put a hand over her face. "You'd think with all the time I spend with Madeline I would've seen that coming." She peeked through her fingers to see Lex walking beside her, laughing and joking along with her. She was actually ... enjoying this. Quite a bit more than she thought she would.

A risky move forward, she took a few extra steps to catch up with him, sliding one of her hands into his. If she was going to enjoy this, she figured she might as well throw worry to the wind and put her all into it. She looked away, apparently fascinated with the ocean. Hopefully she'd done that smoothly enough that he wouldn't think it odd or out of place.

"You have to admit mafia is a smaller pill to swallow than magical monster hunter with sidekick sentient weapon." She blinked, realizing she'd forgotten Junpei in her excitement. Oh no, she was never going to hear the end of it when she got home. "Is Regal bothered by all this?" she said, in reference to their little escape from work.

A bit of shock, but mostly happiness made their way into Lex's facial features at Ami's gesture. He stroked his own thumb across her small hand, showing his acceptance of it. Hand holding...how long had he simply just held hands with a girl? Not since high school, really. It was nice, a simple warmth that spread from their hands to his heart.

...God, he was so full of cheese that he belonged on a board with some fruits and crackers. Imagine if he actually said the things that ran through his head on a day to day basis.

"Point taken." He chuckled, flicking his gaze to the ocean. It really was nice, even if he'd been looking forward to the Caribbean. "Oh, Squawker? I left him in my room - he would have just been a nuisance." His smile went away a little bit at the mention of the haughty Gryphon. He was so sick of being called Whelp. "Is it nice to have Junpei back?"

Ami frowned, actually somewhat disappointed that Regal hadn't come with. From Lex's short descriptions, he seemed a great deal of fun. At least, fun to Ami as Lex said nothing but bad things. To be honest it amused her how someone could be paired up with a weapon that so sourly suited their disposition.

Then again, she wasn't in much better standing with hers. "No. Yes and no. He's ... The benefits he brings are a welcome change- I like going to sleep without bruises and cuts every day. His commentary leaves little to be desired though. I have it in my mind that he was taken from Halloween at a very young age."

She sighed, leaning somewhat into Lex's arm as though he was an old friend. "He's going to eat me alive for not taking him on our little field trip. Does Regal much care for goofing off like you do?"
