12345The trap had been a good one. Mekt hadn't even realized it was a trap until Raven sprung it around him, and by then, naturally, it had been too late to do anything about the matter. That was the glory of living with this caretaker-mother-- she seemed to be skilled at manipulating her children into wanting to do what she needed them to do, whether they originally believed it to be a good idea or not.

12345...it wasn't fair.

12345When Raven had come in proposing the idea of schooling outside the home, Mekt had vehemently opposed the idea. Leave the house to go associate with other children of the same approximate physical age in the quest for further knowledge which the other side would most certainly abstain from? Absolutely ludicrous. It was out of the question. School involved leaving behind his experiments and projects. School meant socializing with those who wouldn't understand his vision, his beliefs.

12345And yet somehow Raven had made it seem so appealing he'd agreed before he knew what he was saying.

12345...was the woman supernatural, or just insane?

12345Perhaps it was a touch of both. Had she been anyone but Mekt's caretaker, he would've been sorely tempted to do some tests on her to discover the answer. He would've been plotting how he could possibly run experiments on her without her knowledge, finding out the best way to lure her down to the lab...

12345...but as she was his caretaker, Mekt could think no such thought. Instead, he found himself staring at his wardrobe, wondering what in Heaven's name he was supposed to wear to a place like school. Of all the evils in the world Raven could've chosen to subject him to, she had to chose the one that required selling his soul and getting into normal clothes.

12345Oh well. It could be worse, right? At least she wasn't making him attend an overabundance of school. Just enough that he could get a well-rounded education, more than he'd want on his own. While Mekt had a thirst for knowledge, it apparently wasn't as balanced as Raven would like, given the way she seemed to harp on the fact that he wasn't getting out enough, and maybe he should meet some other children and such.

12345It was nice, being worried about. However, at the same time, it was more than a little inconvenient. Mekt wanted nothing more than to spend the bulk of his time working on his projects, furthering his knowledge of the systematic changes that beings underwent, and avoid the ghost Hera seemed to believe posed a threat to him in an amorous fashion. Instead, he now found himself faced with the proposition of classes during the day, homework at night, and a large number of social interactions in between all of this.

12345At least it didn't start for more than another month. Raven wasn't shoving him into school immediately; she was waiting for the new term to begin before pushing any of her children into such an academic setting. She simply had begun the paperwork to get them enrolled in school now, since she had to forge some records for both Mekt and Hera in order to pretend they'd had some formal schooling before this point. Mekt didn't quite see the point, as they were both capable individuals, but Raven insisted this was the way things were done.

12345...for some reason, Mekt had the sneaking suspicion 'mother' wasn't always right.

12345But he'd go to school, for her sake, and for the sake of getting out of the house... and keeping an eye on his little sisters-- because even if Hera had saved him twice now, she was still younger than him. It was important that he do his utmost to take care of them in a new environment, especially one which would carry such a high price to pay on all of them in both time and sanity. Mekt had heard a great deal about school and the damage it could cause. There were volumes about the psychiatric damage people sustained at schools. And how dangerous they were.

12345...but Raven wouldn't send them into a completely dangerous and hopeless environment. She cared too much. She was too soft hearted. Which meant there had to be some ray of light, something good about this 'school' thing, more than what Mekt knew and worried over.

12345He just had to figure out what it was before it was too late.

12345"All right, everyone! We're going on a trip!

12345Four pairs of eyes turned to stare at Raven's absolutely insane statement.

12345"...what...?" Raven blinked, glancing around between the four kids who each were giving her a look of disbelief. "...you don't want to go on a trip, children?"

12345"...does it mean that much to you?" Rekka spoke first of the children. Glancing at the rest of his siblings nervously, the little JRocker sighed. "I mean, it's not that big of a deal..."

12345"Does this trip involve copious amounts of sunlight?" Mekt put in, eyes never leaving Raven.

12345"Some, not too much," Raven admitted, "so no. Not copious amounts..."

12345"Does this trip involve copious amounts of 'bonding time'?" Mekt asked.

12345"Hey, it's not like I'm torturing you guys!" Raven protested. "Maybe--"

12345"I think we should go." Hera glanced at her 'brother', silencing any further questions he might have. "It could be fun. And even if it's not, it apparently means something to Mom, so we should go."

12345"Renjyo thinks so too~ heart Renjyo thinks we should go with Mommy and have lots of fun with everyone together!" the little girl piped up, bouncing over to give Raven a tight hug.

12345Well, it was settled then. The five of them got in Raven's car-- with some pushing and protesting about who got to sit where-- the final result being that Mekt, being the oldest, got to sit up front with Raven, while the other three piled into the back.

12345They drove for what seemed, to some of the kids, like hours. In fact, it was only half an hour or so, until they got to the park. It was nearing sunset-- it had taken that long to actually get everyone ready to go, since Mekt demanded he be allowed to wear his trenchcoat, even though it was getting hot out, Renjyo wanted to wear her hair with the red ribbon instead of the blue, Rekka had stolen one of Renjyo's dresses... and Hera... actually, Hera hadn't had any clothing problems. She'd been lounging outside by the car since the decision had been made to leave.

12345The multitude of cars already parked made for an interesting attempt to get a space with Renjyo calling out every time she spotted one and Raven attempting to get there. It didn't take long before they finally connected and a space opened that Raven could easily pull into. Running out of time, Raven scooped up Renjyo and Rekka, motioning for the pair of older children to follow on foot as she locked the car and checked for the wand in her purse. Damn. Things happened too fast.

12345--and there! Just as the family got to the beach and spread out blankets to sit on, the fireworks show started to the sound of a band beginning to play. Glorious fire-flowers danced in the sky over hundreds of families on the beach, all listening to the patriotic tunes being brought to full flourish. The glowing sky seemed to shimmer with the energy of fire and absolute gorgeous wonder. Raven's wand was glowing, but that wasn't an issue, right? Right. Of course...

12345They were all a family, and they were all together. That was what it was about.

12345The show had been beautiful, Mekt would give his caretaker that much. It had been astounding to watch the absolutely horrifically expensive show-- several million dollars had gone into the glorious sky. The way the compounds of different elements reacted when exposed to the catalyst of fire and heat-- the inventors of fireworks, the Chinese, had been geniuses.

12345And yet somehow, the night had felt somewhat... off.

12345Maybe it had been Raven's other child she'd brought along for the first time. That boy... Rekka, she'd introduced him as. He wasn't like the rest of them, meeker-- more interested in singing and strumming that little guitar of his than anything else. He carried within him the same fear of loneliness and inadequacy that had haunted Mekt for so long after his earlier caretakers had abandoned him.

12345Mekt wasn't sure he liked the boy. It wasn't the dress, it wasn't the music... just that this little lolita didn't seem to fit. In fact, he seemed to be more than a little... off. Almost as if he remained in his own little world, even further away from the rest of them than Renjyo-- which was saying something, given the little girl's tendency to focus on the oddest qualities. But that wasn't the issue. He carried within him... a frustration-- and the way he clung to his little kitten was nothing less than completely and utterly obsessive. He seemed almost bi-polar in his wants and decisions--

12345Ah well. Stranger events had happened.

12345Raven wanted them to bond as a family, Mekt understood that. It was her natural inclination to want to make things right for her children, make things... better. And yet somehow, he found himself doubting that things would go well without further investigation on his part.

12345He got along well enough with Hera now. It helped that she'd saved him twice now. Renjyo got along with everyone and didn't get along with anyone at the same time. This boy... somehow felt as if-- ah well. That was past.

12345Now came the issue of the present. The ghosts were still missing, but the stories Mekt had heard last night about 'Independence' and 'Freedom' and such gave him newfound hope that perhaps this wasn't such a bad thing at all. He could learn to be on his own again-- and if worst came to worst, he had his real, live siblings now. So things couldn't go too badly. In fact, things might go rather well. After all, it was... nice. To have siblings.

12345In a manner of speaking.

12345Slipping down to his lab, Mekt glanced around, straining his senses for any hint of Jem that might be lying in wait for him. Nothing appeared out of the ordinary, but one couldn't be too careful... murmuring a warding spell under his breath, Mekt moved into the main area, wishing he had some better idea of protection. Supernatural powers didn't always work as well on supernatural beings. Sometimes the best thing for supernatural beings was some sort of natural protection. However, that theory didn't work so well when ghosts were involved.

12345Thus, all that remained was this supernatural--

12345"Mekt-love doesn' wan' me here~?"

12345...she was here. "Not particularly, no. It seems to me that you cause more problems than you solve," Mekt murmured, doing his best to remain calm in the face of possible danger. Well, not danger so much as... whatever this strange creature wanted from him. Mekt didn't know what it was, simply that she made him uncomfortable. He just had to hope that she couldn't tell.

12345"An' how would ya know, little boy? Ya won' even talk ta me."

12345"I don't need to speak with you in order to understand that you're not particularly a positive force."

12345"Sure of that, aren'cha? Bu' that's not the point, love-- there are more dangerous beasties about than me, ya know. Ya should be more concerned 'bout them, don'cha think, pet?"

12345More dangerous, probably. More annoying, probably not. "I'd appreciate if you left now."

12345"Ya think ya can stop me with silly little spells, pet?" Jem laughed, staying just out of the ward's range. "Jus' wait-- I'll come to ya when ya don' expect it, and then ya won' be able to protest too much," she smiled, her featureless face promising she'd do what she claimed.

12345"I think you're a bit overconfident," Mekt shrugged as he tried to focus on his work. "You seem to be assuming I won't be prepared for whatever you throw at me."

12345"Ya won' be," Jem laughed. "Ya think ya know everythin' 'cause ya have the smarts, but ya don' know 'bout the world, love. I know much more than ya do 'bout the way this is goin' ta work out. So don' go gettin' too complacent, pet-- this game's only jus' beginning." Jem slipped away again, into the shadows of the lab-- hopefully out of the lab, but Mekt wasn't holding his breath on that one.

12345Game? What game was she talking about? This wasn't a game, this was life. A life of being harassed, but still a life. How strange. Maybe she didn't understand that because she was deceased. At any rate, it didn't matter what she claimed to know or believed she knew-- she was a deceased creature who was kept here by sheer force of will and need. Thus, there was no reason to give her thoughts on the matter any sort of merit. There were much better things to do.

12345Like focus on keeping her out of his lab next time, rather than just protecting himself.

12345They just kept coming, didn't they?

12345Mekt didn't mind females. Most of the time. He had to not mind them. But did there have to be so many of them? All living in the same house? When it had just been Raven and him, it had been fine. It had even been fine when it had been Winter, Raven, and him. Hera acted less like a traditional girl than Mekt did, so her appearance hadn't changed the balance much. Renjyo had thrown everything askew by simply being young, eager, and absolutely... well... herself. Rekka hadn't helped matters, as he acted like a quieter, meeker version of Renjyo half the time-- not that Renjyo was ever quiet or meek. And now there was... her.

12345She was sweet. She was...

12345...Mekt found words failed him when he attempted to describe her. She was... radiant. Beautiful. But it was more than that, she was... compelling. Magnetic. Stunning. More than... it wasn't anything Mekt had felt before, and it wasn't subtle, and it wasn't analytical, and it wasn't...

12345What was it? He could understand so much of what it wasn't, but for some reason, this girl, this new member of the household baffled him to no end. He'd combed through the books of supernatural phenomena to try to come up with an answer for the reason he felt as he did, but he'd sadly come up empty handed after long hours of research. This meant, of course, it was either something new, or it was a completely natural phenomenon.

12345However, if it was a natural phenomenon, there would be an explanation somewhere in Mekt's past research, right? Of course. But there wasn't. There was nothing. And that was beginning to grate horribly on Mekt's nerves. There had to be an explanation-- there always was. It just had to be hidden under layers and layers of... what? Layers of subtleties for an unsubtle emotion? Was it an emotion? If so, was that why it hadn't appeared in his research?

12345This was giving him a headache. That girl... his new 'sibling', of sorts... 'Kiku'. That was her name, as delicately spoken by all the ladies of the household. Kiku, Japanese for chrysanthemum, chrysanthemum, the flower of truth. Perhaps that was it-- Mekt had been searching for Truth, and the girl who bore the name of Truth came walking in the door in stunning glory. She appeared to be such a breath of...

12345He was beginning to sound like a blithering idiot. 'Stunning glory'? Where had that come from?

12345Kiku obviously carried some sort of witchlike quality about her. There could be no other explanation. Something was happening and she was at the root of it, something strange, different, and altogether quite bewildering. This strange, strange girl with her spidersilk dress and her moonlight eyes-- she captivated him and confused him-- and at least the first sensation was unfamiliar.

12345He had to calm down, ponder this out. There had to be something... something logical, something which could explain the strange sensations which overcame him when he was around her. He needed to...

12345"Looks like Mekt's got a little problem," Vare crooned as he and the other two ghosts slipped into the lab, ignoring the ward since it hadn't been placed against them. "Missed us so bad you went out and found sisters, hm?"

12345...startling, but not surprising. "I didn't go out and find them, Raven did, as you well know, I'm sure, Vare," Mekt smiled slightly in spite of himself. "But it's good to have you all home."

12345Focus on them, focus on what wasn't really there-- ignore the nagging sensation of what is...

...again, they just KEPT COMING.

The girls hadn't been bad. In fact, they'd been kind of nice, the three of them. They each had their own charm about them, Hera with her willingness to do whatever she pleased or felt necessary, Renjyo with her childlike wonder and enthusiasm, Kiku with her beauty and phenomenal skills of observation. They each brought something good to the Nest.

...but this one?

This wasn't a gentle girl, this wasn't a little girl-child, this wasn't a dedicated seeker of necessity. This... this... how loathe Mekt was to call him 'brother'!... this person was... well, he was who he was.

He was a pompous, arrogant, mean-spirited...

...it wasn't kind to think such thoughts. Mekt knew he should just calm down and breathe, let it pass. This was just a moment. This was just something that tested his resolve, that sought to make him feel trapped, powerless, and viciously inadequate.

...it was working.

Nasir was older, stronger, more powerful, more charismatic than Mekt. It wasn't envy or jealousy-- it was a sheer feeling of inferiority that was quickly overcoming Mekt. Even if Mekt knew that he'd always been quiet and out of the ordinary, he'd been the only male in the house, and that had given him some measure of peace. Now there was another who embodied so much of what was MALE, and...

This wasn't the way it was supposed to go. He was supposed to be able to stay as he was, simply work on the experiments, but now... now there was Nasir. Nasir who represented everything that was--

Why was Mekt so fixated on his brother? There was something wrong with this, the way he looked at Nasir and something curdled his blood. He shouldn't feel such loathing for his brother. They were brothers, siblings, wards of the same caretaker. It wasn't right that they have enmity towards one another.

But Nasir was just so INFURIATING...

...:: 8.2.06 ::...

The lab was quiet, silent and serene. The moon wafted into the sky, dimly visible through the small basement window, lazy and foreboding, a harbinger of bad fortune. All around Mekt, the air shivered-- calm in its dark promise. This world was Mekt's, entirely his. This fall Raven would force the boy into school, a new world where there would be others who would disapprove of the boy on both moral and personal grounds-- but no matter what happened, this world would be his, his sanctuary. He'd called it his zion when he'd first arrived, and a true haven it had proven to be. There had been the minor incidents-- but what home was without them?

"Pretty night, ain't it, Mekt-love?"

Back again, the creature-- there were wards, but somehow she'd managed to enter into his world again. A creature who carried with her the scent of some indeterminable malice. "...why are you back here? You're not wanted."

"Butcha haven't kept me out, have ya?"

He hadn't let her in purposefully, but such protests would, of course, be futile. Nothing would change this creature's mind-- such had been proven in previous encounters with the strange ghost. The fact remained that the ghost drifted into his lab, looking him up and down with hollow eyes. "What do you want now?"

"What I've always want'd, Mekt-dear-- you."

Where did that sound come from? That harsh pounding that Mekt could hear-- a heart. His heart. Beating faster and faster, adrenaline coursing through his veins. She wanted him. How? What? It made no sense. Or perhaps it did and Mekt simply didn't want to acknowledge the possibility of sense being made by a creature so vile. "Get out."

"Only if ya come with me, love~"

Go with her? That would imply some form of consent to whatever this creature had planned, would mean sacrificing what he knew to be right and good and true. This ghost could mean nothing good, and thus, Mekt knew he shouldn't go with her. However, if he didn't go with her, she would simply continue to harass him, fight him-- attempt to gain whatever it was she sought for him. It meant... nothing. Everything. "Not now. There are things I need to do."

"Then I'll need a promise from ya, love-- if ya want me gone, ya hafta promise to come with me sometime."

A bargain. Fair trade. This for that, tit for tat. Not a fair one, certainly, as Mekt had to sacrifice either by agreeing or disagreeing and the ghost won either way. However, he didn't have any choice, did he? Of course not. To discover more about the ghost he had to talk to her, get to know her-- over come his bizarre phobia of her. And in order to do that, he would have to give up some of his freedoms. "Fine. In a while."

"Is that a promise, darlin'?"

"It is." A deal with the devil, but a promise was a promise and a promise could not be broken, at least by those who honored what a promise was and could be and might have been long ago and could be again. "Now get out."

She laughed and faded into the shadows again, leaving Mekt alone to ponder.

What had he done? He'd sworn an oath to go with this ghost at some as of yet unspecified later date, to do whatever she wished-- anything he couldn't stop, that was. A foolish move to be sure. A foolish, dangerous move, brought on by sheer desperation and damnable curiosity. And yet, Mekt could feel no regret for what he'd done. He'd done what he believed to be necessary-- that was that. Nothing more.

If only he didn't feel so uneasy about it. If only he could look at where she'd last been seen and not feel the adrenaline pump through his veins at a frightening speed. If only he could let it go and focus on his experiments. How could he stop what was to come? Did he want to? There were arguments that he must want whatever undefinable, unimaginable thing was to occur, as he'd agreed to the task, but at the same time...

Only time would tell.

...:: 9.1.06 ::...

Now that he’d finally gotten around to agreeing to go with Jem at some point, Mekt found himself caught in the uncomfortable in-between time of waiting. Just waiting, looking for some sort of sign as to what he was supposed to do. She’d disappeared from his life after procuring that promise-- perhaps that was all she’d ever wanted, something to hold over someone living. That would make sense. Books often held that ghosts were malicious creatures who desired some sort of hold over the living in an attempt to make themselves feel worthwhile and existent, even though they were, in fact, deceased.

Ah well. Either way, the fact remained that things happened and Mekt found himself in the center of them. Unfortunately, of course, he knew that he was lost in this mess, this strange situation where he was no longer part of the whole or the half. He needed to find... something. Something concrete which wouldn’t be detracted by the fact that he was doing nothing to change what was happening around him.

Perhaps things needed to be sorted out in his mind, Perhaps he could understand this better if he stepped back, if he was taken by surprise and didn’t have to think any longer about this. The other ghosts had disappeared, really-- thus leaving him with only Jem as his connection to the strange world beyond the grave. What this led to was a distinction, a misunderstanding of what had happened, what would happen, and what might happen.

How confusing that these things would surface, that he wouldn’t be able to understand the subtleties any longer. He’d once been good at this sort of puzzle-- then as he’d grown he’d lost track how to negotiate his way around the mirrors, the reflections of the different faces existing in various points of his life.

Mekt needed a confidante now. He knew it, and he could feel the need rising in the air. After all, some secrets shouldn’t be kept-- they didn’t deserve to be kept. These things rose up without realization, and Mekt knew he had to speak out. But to who? Therein lay the real question.

The obvious answer was Raven. But Mekt knew his mother was... distracted as of late. Something lay heavily on her mind and kept her from her usual observance. Even Corbin didn’t seem to be able to drag her from her fog, which was more than just a little strange. Winter hadn’t been by in ages, Arch wasn’t someone that anyone really seemed to want to talk to (and she’d been surprisingly absent as well), and as for the rest of the crowd who lived at the Nest... well, there lay another problem. Hera would get extremely motherly, Nasir was an idiot, Kiku wasn’t someone Mekt could speak to about matters like these, and Renjyo was nothing more than a child. While Raven’s wand now had something floating from it, that didn’t seem any more promising, and Raven’s rock was still just that-- a rock. No one talked to rocks, really, lest they appear insane.

Mekt had never felt so alone in this house before, not since first coming there. It was an unsettling feeling, and he wished it would vanish. Something had to happen... and soon.

.3.25.07.

Hands running across his body woke him from his deep slumber, Mekt's eyes shooting open in a mixture of terror and confusion. He didn't understand-- what was happening…? There was a strange tenseness in his abdomen, a feeling he wasn't used to, something stirring in his loins... everything was so hot, all at once. What was going on? This was wintertime, there shouldn't be any sort of overabundance of heat, even in Raven's home. It didn't make any logical sen…

The boy couldn't think straight, couldn't focus as his body seemed to get hotter and hotter-- where had his clothes gone? His normal white night clothes were gone, and he appeared to be lying naked in bed, clothed in nothing but the white cotton sheets, the down comforter thrown onto the floor. What was happening to him? He hadn't been doing anything which would've caused memory loss…

A sudden jolt of wet heat along his groin caused the boy to moan, red eyes widening at the sensation. What the--

"Well, pretty boy?" Jem purred up at him, considering him for a brief moment before returning to her ministrations on him.

The boy couldn't think to ask what she was doing, how she managed to touch him when she was a ghost, what the hell was going on... he couldn't think at all. He couldn't...

"You promised," she laughed before continuing.

And then the world went white and Mekt couldn't think, couldn't even make a sound.

It was a few hours before he woke again, feeling sticky and hot. What happened to him? He hadn't... there had been... Jem. What had she done to him? It wasn't something he was used to, this feeling of... he needed to shower. Needed to think. Needed to research what might be happening to him. Might've happened to him.

Cold water cascading over his body cleared his mind somewhat. It had either been a dream or it had been Jem doing something strange and inexplicable. Mekt almost hoped it was a dream, except for the fact that it meant there was something vastly wrong with his psyche.

Then again, perhaps it would be comforting to know there was something he could do to fix it. Either way, he needed to think. Think long, think hard…

Slipping through the house, Nasir's eyes darted about. He felt a wariness within him, as if he'd been watched over the past few nights. It unnerved him, made him feel as though something called to him, whispered his name and set out to strike him down. Perhaps it was his mind, nothing more, but it kept him home tonight instead of wandering out to the clubs as he usually did after such a long day.

In all honesty, the wariness made him act more like a predator, padding silently through the house to check on each of his siblings he actually cared about, glancing in on them. After all, it was important to know they were safe when things moved in the house so darkly, so quietly, so fiercely terribly. Nasir didn't want anything to happen to most of them.

First, Renjyo. His little sister, his baby was growing up, sleeping sweetly underneath her covers, her lips still barely tinged with a hint of rouge that she'd missed wiping off before retiring for the night. Sweet little child, experimenting with everything and nothing at the same time. She learned so much and yet did so little at the same time. Could Nasir stand watching her change over and over again? Of course he could. People changed. It was the way the world worked. Even his beloved sister--

"...you're up late."

Such a quiet voice behind him could only belong to one of his brothers. Shutting Renjyo's door gently and turning, Nasir's eyes narrowed at Mekt, the only one of the siblings who really dared openly challenge Nasir's dominance in this place. "As are you."

Considering his elder brother for a long moment, Mekt took in Nasir's state of dishevelment, the fact that he was here, not out on the town the way he usually would be at this hour of the night. "You're awake because you can feel them too," he sighed finally, looking very tired for a moment. "I was wondering if you'd be able to feel them. Her at least-- she's been watching you for a while."

'Them'. 'Her'. 'She'. What the hell was his brother talking about? "What the--"

"Shh. You don't want to wake Renjyo up, do you?" Mekt cautioned, motioning for Nasir to follow him into the library-- strange that Raven had soundproofed such a place, given the volatile tempers in the house, but it made it useful for the moment. Once inside the sprawling room, the pale boy gave his older brother a slight smile. "You've felt eyes on you recently, like someone's watching you. Given your alpha male tendencies, this makes you feel more upset, makes you feel like you might be in danger, which makes you cautious."

How did Mekt know all of this? Somehow, Nasir didn't think he'd like the answer.

"...she won't be bothering you anymore," Mekt sighed after a moment. "Not after tomorrow, if everything goes well."

...Mekt was making a fool out of him. "What the hell are you talking about?" Nasir asked, barely resisting the urge to slam his brother against one of the walls. Was Mekt completely out of his mind?

"Nothing much. Just... hang in there one more night," Mekt shrugged. "She'll leave you alone."

Somehow, Nasir didn't like the sound of that either.

*Frozen: When a pet is forced to remain in it's current stage indefinitely due to an owner's failure to comply with contractual obligations made and understood prior to the purchase of the pet. Additionally, the journal is locked and ownership is still retained despite the frozen state.
