"A gem? What is?" Ofelia stopped whatever indeed she was doing to look at the Lifer. "Ehh, never mind. Ah'll jus' do as ya say an' keep all that in mind since it'll totally help whenever someone is kickin' me down an' stuff." Yes, she was sounding sarcastic, and although Ofelia felt like Melvin meant well sometimes she felt like he was a school guidance leader. Someone who listened but really didn't give much of a s**t.
"Anyway what we're doin' is gettin' ready ta make chocolate from cocoa powder an' scratch an' what have ya. Ah was cuttin' up some butter which...can ya put it in the microwave fer me? We gotta mix it in wit' this cocoa powder an' if it's hard it's harder ta stir, yanno?" Ofelia was determined to make the chocolate while the cookie dough was still getting firm enough to be worked with and she thrust a bowl full of butter cubes at Melvin. "Put it in fer like fifteen seconds or sommin', an' while we're waitin' check the dough. It's probably not ready but never hurts ta look at it."
