You know why there's so many smooth jazz players, right? Commercially, that's the genre that does best now.
: ( There are so many great players that sold out to do elevator music. Eric Marienthal is an amazing sax player. His tone is so fierce and distinctive too. Only problem is he's mostly smooth jazz.

The_Winter_Wolf Ash Rail I like fusion. Idk why so many of my friends dislike it. Many people hate fusion because it "breaks away" from traditional ideas of music. That's why people hate it. They probably don't like jazz-funk or jazz-rock because it gears away from "jazz" and instead goes towards "funk" "RnB" or "Rock". I agree with Sorrow, fusion-jazz is one of the primary influences of rock (in general). I was speaking of metal, not rock.

i h8 it when people don't even LISTEN to the genre before dissing it. jazz is like....the BEST THING EVER ANYWAY!!! i like most genres('cept country and rap crap) so i hate it when people don't even listen to it first. yeah, i have this problem often, people either: A: look at me like i'm crazy B: say that my music tastes stink C:ask me WHY i like jazz or D: laugh well, whatever other people say, jazz and swing is still the best thing known to mankind, and there's nothing they could ever say to change my mind! ^^^

My combo just had a performance for our high school's Spring Fest. Our pianist and guitarist insisted on playing Chameleon, because they kept saying how people will think it's bad a**. I've never even looked at it! I don't even have the book they were reading from. They also insisted on playing Windows, when they know how uncomfortable I am with that one. And our last song was Seven Steps to Heaven, which I honestly don't think any of us are capable of actually soloing well to. It was awful, I pretty much just had to play as fast as I could without thinking, or else any mistakes I made would stick out.
: ( I can't believe they would insist on playing songs we most likely would have a hard time with, just because they thought that the other kids would like them.

King Of Ninjas I was at Judo training on the weekend, and this kid and I were talking about music. He is into all the hardcore death metal type stuff which is not really my thing. When I said I liked jazz, he looked at me like he was an idiot. I asked him what he had heard and he said he refused to listen to any of it 'cause "its all crappy boobidoo bullshit". Before I decide a genre is crap, I LISTEN TO IT! How can someone form an opinion without knowing anything!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! Discuss: Stupidity and people with insanely closed minds because its human nature to judge things. it happens all the time and there going to be plenty of ppl who hate jazz with out trying it. i'm sure there plenty of music you don't like and haven't really listen too. so stop being a hypocrite

As I said, I'll listen to music before I insult it. I tell someone I don't think I'll like that kind of music, but I'll listen to it to see if they can prove me wrong. Often I was right, and I didn't like the music, but there are occasions when I've been wrong and I'm free to admit that.

I'm ashamed. Have any of you been lectured by Keith Jerritt or Chick Corea, the one about Genre's?
Dont piss on Death Metal; there's very few of you who could match some very fast, pretty technical licks of their's.
Now I prefure what's been labeled as Punk and Jazz.... and they seem way off, but i can imagine John Coltrane jamming with Black Flag. Hey a good example of the fusion of the two is The Stooge's Second Album (cant remember it's name right now... Fun House?) that has a saxamaphonist, who's solo stuff is very safisticated.

All I can say is that it´s their loss. If you won´t even try to listen to a genre, you shouldn´t make fun of it. But hey, that´s his ignorant opinion and he´s entitled to it. My brother also loves death metal and black metal, but one thing I do appreciate is that he sometimes comes to my jazz concerts. He sometimes even says "Good job" afterwards. But guess what? He hates jazz, as well as salsa, funk, soul, hip hop, tango, and lots of other music that I like. I don´t like death metal but I gave it a try. He doesn´t like jazz but he gave it a try. That´s the way it should be. You don´t have to like something, but you can at least show the respect to try it out.

Hm...it's random refrence time!
My friend hated Phantom of the Opera, just because I talked about it a little too much. Any time I mentioned it, she'd like, die. (Not literally, people)
Then when she came over to my house, we all watched it because we couldn't decide on a movie.
Now she thinks it's OK, but still dislikes the best Phantom of all.
But I digress. That person you were talking about doesn't know what they're missing.
My favourite jazz song is Birdland.
