Reiko looked up at him and raised an eyebrow. "Yes. Going in chronological order, this would be the second time I thought, 'This is the happiest day of my life,' so it's the second happiest day." Her eyes twinkled. "The first was when I first met you, so get over here."

Brise laughed as he cuddled his mate, knowing he would never let her go, no matter what happened.

Reiko happily leaned into her beloved mate. She couldn't see anything besides a bright future ahead of them. She couldn't be happier.

Ruin eyed the two azrein below. A grin lit on his face as he erupted a fire that encircled the couple and drew them closer together.
Brise's eyes widened as he looked up, his tail switching nervously as he looked around at the fire-circle that was closing him and Reiko off from everything else.
Ruin grinned and waited for his moment/

Reiko froze, eyes flicking around at the flames. Oh no. This was not good. She had heard the stories of the stallion who created flames. Actually, she'd heard about a few different Azrien with that ability--and she couldn't say that any of them were good. "We have to go," she said quietly but urgently. This was bad. Very very bad.

Brise gave a quick nod. "Reiko.. Listen to what I say. I want you to run, don't look back. Just run. I will be right behind you, okay?" He asked, turning his back to her and looking up at the azrein on the ridge.
Ruin grinned sadistically as he made his way down the ridge.
"Go!" He cried out, her eyes narrowing in on the firey beast. He would fight, only long enough for his love to get away.

"But--" Reiko stopped her protest as she realized the dire time constraints. She couldn't argue; she'd have to hope that Brise was right. She gave him a nuzzle and whispered, "Be safe," before she turned and leapt over the flames. The moment her hooves met the ground again, she took off, getting as much distance between her and the enemy as she could. The faster she did, the faster Brise would follow. But the farther she ran, the heavier her heart became. It killed her, but she obeyed Brise's request and didn't look back.

Reiko finally let herself collapse, laying underneath a tree that was just starting to throw out the first of its leaves. As she rested, her eyes wearily surveyed her immediate surroundings. This place was much more alive than her southern home--or even the fields she and Brise had played in as foals. North. She must have traveled north. But how far? Central neutral lands, maybe? Or had she traveled to the northern edge of them? Would Brise be able to find her? She had to avert her thoughts to observation again. There was a stream nearby. Little patches of moss clung to the rocks in it. 'Moss... soak with water. Use to clean wounds and ease burns...' As her gaze moved to different sprouts, her mind reported their uses. Food, medicine, bed--without fail, her mind conjured up the stores of knowledge about everything she laid eyes on. The sounds of the stream were soothing. Feeling the lull of sleep, Reiko forced herself to give the horizon another scan. As she did so, she noticed how horribly her vision was blurring. Her mind was beginning to feel very cloudy... how long had she run?

Brise's heart lurched when Reiko left him. He felt the separation expand between them as she ran. But he would have to worry about her later. Now, his own survival mattered. She would survive. She would be okay.
Ruin walked through the flames, cackling like the little death fire he created. "Little brave boy..." Ruin mocked, his coal eyes capturing Brise's. "I know you, boy. I watched you and your siblings grow. Funny.. that you don't have horns... Then again... I always saw how strong your brother was.. Anyone could tell you would be the weaker as you four grew."
Brise gritted his teeth as he considered his options. He had heard of this beast. Ruin.. and he could kill Brise without Brise ever touching him. Run... His mind screamed. And run he did. But the flames encircling him were too high, and they licked at his body as he leaped. He landed with a dull thud and nearly toppled over as he screamed in pain.
The rest of his run he didn't remember.

Days later, Brise had finally managed to make it as far as his mate. He saw her form before the world blurred and he toppled, crashing onto the ground from exhaustion. His sides and belly were burned badly, and his hooves were in much pain from being in fire. But he had made it. He was alive. And so was Reiko.

Reiko blinked out of the light doze she'd fallen into, searching for the source of the thud she'd heard. Her heart froze as her eyes landed on her beloved's form. Then her mind kicked in. She stumbled to her feet, grabbing a mouthful of moss and soaking it with water before rushing to Brise's side. She gently dabbed the burns with it, trying to soothe the pain of his wounds. Most of the worry was lifted from her shoulders now that he was here, but she couldn't help fretting. Her poor Brise... When the moss ran out of water, she set it down and nuzzled her mate. "You never were good at dodging..." But he was alive. He'd probably have scars from the deeper burns, but he was alive.

Brise looked up at his mate, his eyes watery and woozy from the pain, but he saw her behind his clouded eyes. "I made it, didn't I? And its kinda hard to dodge something you can't see coming." he wheezed out, letting her nurse him as he lay on the ground. Oh what he wouldn't give to be back at Aila's just so the human woman could take care of him.

"Of course you did. Now you can rest." Reiko gave him a gentle, affectionate nudge. "Sleep, Brise. You've earned it." She picked up the moss again, going to the stream to soak it with water once more. Then she returned to her beloved's side and resumed her task. Considering the situation they'd escaped, the damage wasn't that bad, but it would take a bit of time to heal. Their adventuring would have to wait a while. When she went to the stream a third time to soak the moss, she sighed. She almost wished her siblings were with them. They were rambunctious, but they were reliable in an emergency. Where they were was still debatable. They definitely weren't in the south, but how north of that they were was questionable... especially since it was unfamiliar to her. The farthest north she'd been was the place she and Brise had played as foals. Well, she'd just have to take care of him the best she could. Once he was better, they could decide where to go and what to do.
