Have you ever had just a goddamn awful day: filled with disappointment, melancholy, anger? Well, I bet you have, but, think about it, okay? Someone else could have it worse than you; you could be hungry, lonely, dying? A hobo, a young man contemplating suicide... or maybe, you could be his poor, young wife; a young wife of only twenty; a young wife with two mouths to feed, excluding herself and her husband--they just don't have enough. Ever. A young couple with twins? How would they live? The simple fact is: they don't.
The young man has given up on life. It is too much to bear. He has lost his sanity. He is not the same charming boy in high school, and he has realized that he will never be that boy again. What has become of his life? He regrets everyday; regrets his beautiful family: abuses his wife, neglects his children. He had to end it.
He stands on top of a cliff, a rocky shore beneath the unstable ground which he stands upon. The sea beckons him to enter within her. It wanted him to be a part of her family of sea creatures, of depths, of the virgin parts of her--parts where no man had touched, innocence still intact.
It called.
No! But so would his wife if she learned of his consequence! He couldn't die. Not now! He had children! He had a wife; a caring, loving wife. He couldn't die. Yet, the sea still called.
He craned his neck away from the cries of the waves. He turned his body and wiped away the morbid thoughts from his head. His family needed him!
"They need you not, my dear--but we do," a voice whispered close to his ear. The wind blew him towards the edge of the poor structure of earth. He had to muster strength to keep from falling. He planted his legs firmly on the ground. He shook his head. "Join us!" The voice caressed him within her disembodied bosom.
"No!" The young man let out a scream. It resonated from within him, it echoed on the expanse of land beyond the sea in the horizon. It came back to his ear, distorted, ugly, inhuman. It was then that he felt arms grab him. He searched frantically for the people who grasped him with such force, but could find none. He tried to pull himself away. It wasn't easy; however, he pulled himself free! Although, it was too late. The unstable earth crumbled beneath him. He reached for nothing, grasped nothing and regretted everything. "Carmen!" The young man screamed for his wife, as if she could hear him from such a distance. He was a goner.
That was the day her husband took a dive and never returned.
"Irma, Zayn! Stay close to the shore!" Carmen yelled after her children as they ran, giggling and squirming, towards the water. It has been a week since her husband left their small family. The young lady found out very quickly that her paycheck could not support their current lifestyle. She needed to work another job, leaving her twins to fend for themselves at home during the night, a difficult feat for a pair of four year olds. How are they going to survive?
"Mommy! I found treasure!" Zayn sprinted, as fast as his legs could carry him, towards his mother. Once he arrived, he showed her golden coins which he cupped in his hand. Was it real? Carmen could not believe her eyes. Irma followed her brother with strings of pearls around her neck. Where were these coming from?
"Baby, Sweetie, you need to put those back. They don't belong to us," The mother shook her head. As much as the temptation bit at her conscience, Carmen could not do such a thing. Someone must be looking for their missing things already.
"But The waves said it was ours," Irma pursed her lips. "I'll show you!" The little girl ran towards the spot where the amount of jewelry and gold and jewels was endless. There a small crevice lead to a cave with wood afloat, and more of the treasure. It was what Carmen imagined Captain Hook's booty would look like scattered everywhere. It was unbelievable.
But, there was an unsettling feeling in the pit of her stomach. The whole ordeal was unsettling. where were they? In all of her years visiting the beach, never had she seen this spot. Carmen was not familiar with the area. The cave was unsettling. It seemed to breath from within. It whistled an eerie tone when the wind passed through small cracks on the rock. It whispered to her. "Compensation for your husband," A giggle echoed on the walls.
"Irma, Zayn. Come to mommy," Carmen called to her children who seemed just as spooked as she was. They clutched her arms tightly, scared of the disembodied laugh. Was this a prank? Compensation? Where was her husband?
"Take as much as you want," The voice giggled once more. "They are all yours. Your husband was worried about your wellbeing."
"Where is he?!" Carmen yelled breathlessly. Was he safe? "We want to see him!"
"Really?" The voice said, quite surprised. "Do you want to join him?"
"Kids?" The young mother looked at her kids, but they simply shook their heads.
"The waves scare me," Zayn grasped his mother tighter. "Can we leave?" Irma added.
"No. You may not. It's too late." The voice whispered to all of them.
The water within the cave rose higher and higher, flooding the inside. The sea took three more victims.
You see, there is something about the sea which makes it yearn for more people to fill its vast loneliness. She is capable of so much love, but there is only so much humans can give her. She is always searching for more to join her in attempt to fill the void. Year after year, her grasp on the humans gets wider and wider-- she is gaining more water, more to reach all of her beloved humans. Soon enough, we'll all be calling her family. Soon enough, we'll join her.
This is our fate. This is our destiny. This is what we live for. We won't die within Mother Sea. She'll care for us. We are her children. We are her sweet, darling children. She will love us.

I mean I like some carnage here and there but nothing like "Heres a few characters who appear to be important and now I'll KILL THEM!"
Tragic stories are no fun to read so I guess it has to balance out one way or another... xD

March 2013 This months prompt (#3) is... Your characters are walking upon the beach one day when they discover all sorts of flotsam and jetsam that has washed ashore. In amongst things like sandals, chairs, clothing and toys, they find valuable items that have washed ashore too, such as gold and jewels. It looks as if a merchant or passenger ship has had a run in with pirates and come off the worse for wear! But there seems to have been something that’s destroyed the pirate ship too. Maybe it was a sea serpent or a Kraken. Whatever the case, your character/s find a very peculiar item that looks like perhaps an enchanted locket, or a ship in a bottle. What happens when they try to open it and release something or break a seal? Is there a genie inside? Does a whole ship pop materialize? Maybe there was even a mermaid nearby that the treasure belonged to. March 2013 WINNER " Oi wake up lad!!" An old man's voice shouts. The sound of the creaking ship mixed with the sounds of people shouting mixes into my ears. It was a simple voyage across the sea, then why was this happening? I awake in my small cabin and find that my wife has gone missing. Of course, she could be just releaving herself, being pregnant and all. Yet something in my heart deny's that fact. My brother was a pirate, a landlubber. Even though I quit swashbuckling and settled down he was still kind enough to take us, my wife and I that is, over to the other side of the world. The old man was one of the longest crew members on my brother's ship and from his worried expression something was happening. I ask what the matter was, but his response was shoving a hilt into my hand. " Ye ain't gonna believe this Lad..ye just ain't! Hurry! We ain't got much time, the ship's sinkin'!" he shouted bursting out of the room cutless in hand. Sinking? This ship was..sinking? My brother boasted of this ship being one of the sturdiest vassels in the sea! Worries for my wife fill me as I get dressed and gather what belongings I could. Another pirate passes by me in a hurry as I walk out. Asking what was happening, his pale white face mutters M-Monster. Monster? Please, there had to be some other explanation! Monster..obviously that pirate had a bit too much to drink, I think making my way to the deck of the ship. Yet, when I stepped out onto the deck, I begin to realize how right he was. Even I can't believe it. Pirates running for their lives, some jumping overboard. Large silver tentacles tightly wrapped around the ship. A kraken would be anyone's first thought. When I traced the source of the tentacles, a gasp escapes my lips. This was no monster..or kracken! It was...it was...my wife! A large swollen kracken woman slowly tears the ship apart, eating pirates or anything else that got in her way. Flames all around us, I just stare horrified at the large..pregnant monster, no woman, before us. I then spot a small necklace glowing around her neck. My heart stops, that was the same..no..it was the same necklace we got from that treasure chest my brother had pulled from the deeps of the ocean! I presented it to her as an early anniversary gift. Was that...was that the cause? I hadn't noticed, but she had more of an appetite after she had put it on. Sometimes she would amaze me at how much she could pack away, that tiny pregnant frame of hers..but now..now she wasn't so tiny. I bite my lip unsure what to do. Am I supposed to shoot her? The woman I love? The woman carrying my twins? My heart stops as our eyes meet and her hand reaches out towards me open palm ready to grab at me..I drop my gun. I can't do it, I can't kill her. I close my eyes and expect my fate. " Hurry up slow poke!" a young teen calls to her boyfriend. Running along the beach, her boyfriend wonders what she was to excited about. " Look a fresh flotsum! Maybe there's some pirate treasure left for us!" she giggles with glee now rummaging through seaweed and ship pieces. " H-Hey watch yourself! I don't want you getting any splinters!" he shouts finally catching up to her. " Oooooooooh! Preeeeettty!! Hey look what I found!" she smiles as a pretty necklace dangles from her hand. Placing it around her neck she giggles happy that it fits perfectly. " How do I look!?" she asks giving a twirl. " Uhh...like you're wearing a necklace." he responds flatly looking at the flotsum. " Anything else in there?" Pouting she frowns. " Oooh! You are so inconsiderate sometimes! No I didn't find anything else I guess this is what all there was. A treasure..it's so pretty and sparkly..I can't wait to show--" her stomach growls loudly stopping her. " Odd..I'm famished!" she mutters clutching her flat stomach. Crossing his arms he laughs. Of course she probably was, it was about lunchtime. " It's almost lunch, let's head to that nice seaside resturant for a nice meal." She smiles now clinging to his arm. " Good idea! I feel like I can eat a whoole whale!" she teases lightly. As the young couple walks off I bite my lip. Only I can see the necklace faintly glowing. I'm worried for them, yet my worries quickly vanish when a large finger softly touches my cheek. I look up to see my wife smiling warmly at me. " Honey..this is for the best. The necklace told me it was time for a new host." she cooes to me softly as I lean against her cheek. Sitting upon her shoulder we watch in a safe distance. My wife had attacked the ship because she wanted to save me. My brother was going to maroon me and steal her away..of course he was gone, gone with most of the crew. Probably digested now. I cringe at thinking that. Her large silver hand gently massages her belly. " They're kicking..I think they want their Daddy." she says shifting an open palm for me to step onto. Being lowered, just below her now large navel. I feel our much larger children kick at my tiny hands. She tells me there's more than two now, but given her size it's easy to believe. This is my life now, roaming the seas with a seamonster for a wife. I never thought this would ever happen to us, yet she oddly accepts it as well. Together we stop and watch the young couple melt off into the distant shore town. I bite my lip again..soon. Soon the necklace will claim another, that Kracken's Cursed necklace. I feel my wife's tentacles shift a bit signaling that it's time to move on. Her large lips blow a bubble that engulfs me, allowing me to breathe as we decend beneath the sea. I wonder where the ocean will take us? My wife's feeling hungry again, and is thinking of attacking a port town or some other ships. I tell her to make sure not to eat anything that would harm the babies and she chuckles happily. I think, I can get used to this life. We're diving deeper now, all the lights are fadeing from the surface. I close my eyes once more smiling gently as the soothing bubbles all around me lull me to sleep.

Lana took her daily walk on the beach. She didn’t have her walk yesterday or the day before due to a tropical storm in the area. She noticed the jewels, the scarves, the shiny gold and the other trinkets. She bent down and scooped some of everything in a bag she carried for that purpose. While she was gathering as many jewels, scarves, gold and trinkets, she spotted a golden locket studded with platinum and jewels in the most intricate elvish design that she ever saw. Lana reached as far as her 6 month belly would allow. Finally, she grabbed the locket and fell back next to her bag. “Oompf! If this is really pirate treasure, then why would they take this locket?” Lana finished filling her bag and put it over her shoulder, but the locket she clutched in her hand. She finished her walk and when she came back to the apartment where Jason, her husband, and she lived in, she dumped the contents of the bag on the kitchen table. “What do you have there, honey?” Her husband Jason appeared in the doorway. “I was taking a walk on the beach and I found some poor pirate’s treasure among what must have been the ship.” Lana said, as she sorted through what she brought home. Jason came up from behind and hugged her, wrapping his arms around her belly. “Why do we need treasure, when we have each other?” Jason said, as he gave the contents a cursory glance. “Well, we can use this for the baby.” Lana replied, still concentrating on sorting her gathered treasure. Jason shrugged and let go of his wife. “As soon as you are finished, let’s eat.” Lana nodded to show that she had heard him. Jason left the room, leaving Lana alone. She finished sorting and put what she wanted in the safe. Taking the locket, she went into her favorite place in the living room- the Lazy-Boy easy chair that rocked. She settled down and carefully opened the locket after tracing the design with her finger. She didn’t think that the locket was enchanted; it just looked like a regular locket. Once she opened it, a fairy flew out and sprinkled sparkly gold dust on her. “What are you doing, little fairy?” The fairy answered, her response sounded like the sound of wind chimes in a gentle breeze. Lana didn’t understand what the fairy was saying, thought it sounded a bit worried and frantic. Lana began to realize that she was starting to float through the air. “Whoa! What is this?” Her hand was taken by the fairy, and led through the window to the sky, where a star brightly shown, even though it was mid-day, and the sun was high overhead. Within a minute, Lana was let down, in a place she had never been before. The locket was around her neck, the clasp closed with a spell so it wouldn’t fall off while Lana was flying. Lana looked at her surroundings. She was on an island, a pretty large one too, by the looks of the town. Shock rippled through her senses. She was on the island where the necklace and the fairy came from! She watched wide-eyed as a band of pirated loaded their ship with the jewels, scarves, and other trinkets that she herself had collected that very day. Also going aboard were a group of elves, one older, and one younger. “Come on, Eralin! We’ll be late!” the younger elf pulled at the Eralin. Eralin smiled. “Cool down, Nabeline. They won’t leave for some time yet.” Nabeline settled down, but her eyes roved over the rest of the island. “Why do we have to leave, Eralin?” the younger elf questioned. “Because, Nabeline, that’s what mum and dad wanted for us. We have to abide by their wishes.” Eralin replied, putting his hand on her head. “Oh.” Nabeline was quiet for a moment, and then opened up her locket, the same one that Lana now wore. “I’m gonna catch a fairy in here!” She started to jump around, trying to catch the fairy. Eralin laughed, and caught the stubborn fairy. “Here you go, Nabeline. Here’s your fairy.” Eralin gently deposited the fairy in the locket and swiftly closed it. “Come now, they are getting ready to push off.” Eralin grabbed his sister and swiftly ran up the gangplank. Once they were on, the ship started to sail away. The fairy sprinkled more dust on Lana and took her over the ocean. The fairy pointed and Lana looked. The ship was being attacked by a monster. She couldn’t tell which monster though. Soon, the ship was wrecked, and the bodies of the crew and passengers were floating on the water. Lana brought her hand to her mouth, tears running down her face. The fairy brought her back to her apartment, and Lana sat there, crying. “Such a sad story behind this locket…” The fairy nodded, and gently hugged Lana. Lana got up. She turned to the fairy, her face coated with rivelts of tears. “I am carrying twins. I will name them after the two elves.” The fairy nodded and followed Lana out of the room. A few months later Lana gave birth, to a boy and a girl. She named the boy Eralin, and the girl Nabeline, after the two drowned elves. The fairy smiled when they came home. Jason was proud of his wife, and didn’t question her decision to name them such, after he heard the story.
