"Yeah, I mean, their asses wouldn't even be here if it weren't for us. So any thoughts they're having is on account of our good graces," Harrison said. "If a few guys shopping is too shocking for their dainty ******** eyes to handle, they can suck it up. Like Jordan said. What are they gonna do about it?"
Harrison's evaluation was clearly along the lines of common people.
"We're in the middle of nowhere, Wisconsin."

Rep didn't relax, never seeing people again or being more dangerous than them didn't make their judgements any less valid in his eyes. He wanted people to look at him and think how dangerous he was, respect and fear him. He couldn't stand the idea of them looking at him and thinking he was gay, thinking they knew him.
He met Jordan's gaze and it was impossible to hide the inner conflict.
"I know", to all the things they'd said to him. " But.." But it didn't calm him down. "I'm just." He was interrupting everything. "I don't want to hold things up like.. I just need a minute?"

Jordan rested his hand lightly on Harrison's back as they returned to the mattress section. "He'll be okay in a few," he said, and hoped that he was right.

"He would have liked the soft one," Harrison said mournfully, the wide range of mattresses seeming more like a chore. He sank into the next one down the line, but didn't roll around, looking at the ceiling in gloomy contemplation.
"I mean. We're only going to be here a couple of hours, at most, but we're going to be using the mattress. I don't want to get home with something that everybody's not comfortable in. I mean like. I read about all that s**t for nursing. Back support, and he gets injured all the time, and I'm sure Tracey's got preferences..."

Jordan flopped onto the mattress next to Harrison. "I think he just needs a few minutes to get from being freaked out back to being pissed at the whole world." He paused. "I like this one. Ferros says it's too soft, but I seem to recall him saying something about sleeping in a pile of scrap metal, so his opinion doesn't count."

He could feel Jordan move beside him, a light, muffled trigger from the mattress.
He paused.
He was still looking at the ceiling. He hadn't been paying attention to the mattress at all. But now that he was...
The top was soft, and easy to sink into, but after a point there was some resistance.
He tested it reluctantly. One press with his shoulders. Then a second. It was pleasantly springy.
He pronounced with weighty, abandoned significance, "....I like it too."

With a bit of distance Rep felt like the world came back into focus. On his own people could only judge his frankly horrific sweater and ragged looking clothes - which he was used to. He browsed through the rows of frankly identical looking duvets, not sure what a tog rating was or why he should care about it in the least. It was just an excuse to get away, he didn't really find it all that interesting, nothing really was when he was on his own.

He wanted to look at the beds, but beds were so personal. Part of that secure little world he wanted to keep locked up, thinking about it here, with eyes all over the place made him want to break down. It was one thing to relax in privacy, here it was agony. Friends didn't go mattress shopping together, only one sort of person did.

"Ferros sleeps. He does it when I'm on pod or fishtank duty sometimes. Takes a nice nap, and I have to stay alert." Jordan sat up on the mattress, bounced slightly to test it. "Seems like it could take some abuse," he said, the smile evident in his voice.

"The tag on this one says it's got reinforced steel. Huh, let's see ... " Jordan slid off the mattress and wandered down the aisle, checking the display tags. " ... Holy s**t, they do have some, come check this out." ((Note to peanut gallery: I googled. This is a real thing.))

Harrison lifted the tag to read this time, and snorted.
"Haha, holy s**t. I can't believe this. What do normal folks need titanium for?" As he read the further promises, Whatever you do in bed, Sealy supports it, his expressions softened, and he tapped the tag with his thumb, wiling time.
He dropped the tag, and announced, "It's been a minute," then turned on one purposeful heel towards the accessory aisles.
