Cardinal swore out loud and aimed a hoof back at the little s***. The first time he missed the second time he was sure he heard a sharp little crack. He turned his head to see Sumac's head. the fool had placed his head before the foal could be struck.
Sumac's skull rang and he was certain that he was now bleeding. "Ca. Let go now." It was a harsh order but if she kept up then Cardinal would kill them both. He heard Cardinal laugh and threaten the girl anyway. He moved his body to shield her more. "Ca lay down." He used a wing to push her down so that he could cover her. Cardinal aimed a few more kicks at the pair but Sumac made sure he was in the bird Azrein's way.

Ca released the wing out of surprise more than anything else; the sudden force in Sumac's earthy voice startled her. She reluctantly allowed Sumac to protect her, ears flattened against her head. The filly curled up so that she was small and easier to shield, even though she still wanted to rip Cardinal apart feather-by-feather. Her father's fights never ended like this. Was she missing something? She huffed. She hated thinking about things like this; it was complicated and confusing. Why did Sumac stop her?

Cardinal finished ‘scolding’ Sumac and was annoyed the male had saved the little wench from his wrath. Still the blood running down Sumac’s coat helped to east the anger he felt. Leaving he figured he would corner Sumac later and continue his education. Clearly some things were lacking.
Sumac’s head was still exploding in throbs of pain when he finally risked opening his eyes and raising his head. It was a mistake he realized as pain shot up his neck and into the base of his skull. Still Cardinal left and Ca was breathing. That was a victory of sorts he supposed. Uncurling from the female stared at her for a moment. He had cuts along his body and his wings now sported spots of red from the blood in the feathers. “What were you thinking? He would have killed you. You are under my care, what would have happened if I hadn’t shielded you?” His voice didn’t sound as angry as he felt. Instead it just sounded tired.

Ca shook her head and snorted, ears flat against her head. She wouldn't have died. She would've made Cardinal regret ever meeting her. The hardness in her expression melted away, however, as she inspected her caretaker. The filly lightly licked one of his wounds, then spit out the blood and repeated in an attempt to clean the injury.

The stubborn little thing had no idea how strong Cardinal was. She was so small and so vulnerable. He figured she must understand as she stared to lick at his wounds. “Enough Ca.” Standing up he grunted as the other wounds Cardinal had given him protested. He felt a bit light headed but figured he would fine with time. “You are too little to fight an adult like Cardinal. Now I’m going to wash off. You should too.”

Ca sighed as she was told she was too little. She wasn't that little, was she? They were all just big... But the size difference was the missing piece of the mental puzzle. She had to get bigger before allowing herself to unleash her fury on Azrien like Cardinal. She nodded, sticking by Sumac's side as they returned to the water. It didn't take long to clean herself off--and it took even less time to fix her gaze on Sumac's wounds again. She looked around for a moment before trotting to the edge of the pond and clamping her jaws around the stem of a cattail there. The filly plucked it and dunked the fuzzy top into the water, stirring it around for a minute before pulling it back out. Ca went to her caretaker, lifting the cattail and gently running it across his neck. Sumac had been extremely wary of her touching him directly, but maybe this way she could help him get the blood off.

As he washed he wasn’t paying much attention to the little one so when something started to touch him he was about to scold her again. Finding himself facing a little cattail he chuckled. “Quick little thing.” She was learning and he was surprised. Few were brave enough to stay close to him, but this little one stayed and wanted to help. “Your father must be proud of raising someone with such a good heart.” He just let her help with the small wounds while he tended to the larger ones. “We need to find a safe spot for you.” The last thing he needed was to tell the girl’s father that he had let Cardinal get close not once but twice. Perhaps he could make a hiding place out of dried plants. That might do for a while. Still he’d have to gather quite a few. Maybe he could turn it into a game and have her help? That sounded like a good idea. He got out of the water again when he was clean.

Ca wiggled happily when he called her quick, and her entire being all but lit up at the comment about her father being proud. Her elation died down when Sumac mentioned finding a safe spot. She trotted out of the water after him, still carrying the cattail in her jaws. It was an easier and safer way to get his attention, after all.

He looked back to see her following him still holding that silly little cattail. He gave a small little huff and kept walking. As long as it kept her occupied. “Now Ca for your shelter. There’s no good spot to hide you so we’ll need to make one.” And a good one at that. “We need to break and bring bits of bushes together. The more the same kind the better. Can you help? Just keep me in sight while you are gathering them.”

Ca nodded, eyes wandering to their surroundings. A lot of the same type...She reluctantly set her cattail down on a bush so that she could help Sumac in breaking off bits of the bushes and bringing them together. The filly was surprisingly calm and content to do her task; she even started humming after a few minutes.

Keeping an eye on her, Sumac set about gathering branches off bushes. He started to pile them in a grassy area and indicated that Ca should do the same. His body hated him moving but he figured he would be able to rest as soon as Ca could hide. Grunting he listened to her hum while she worked. It wasn’t unpleasant. It was something he wasn’t used to.

Ca glanced up when the stallion, but then continued her work and humming. After a while, she snorted at him, getting between him and her hiding spot and making 'go' gestures. She could finish it. Sumac needed to lay down now.

He stood at her snorting near the pile confused for a while. She was shooing him away. He looked around and tried to go around work on another side but that didn’t work. “Fine fine. Finish yourself but I’ll be here to help if you get stuck.” He lay down on the spot.

Ca snuffed her satisfaction and went back to work. Once it was finished, she retrieved her cattail and disappeared inside. She tried to peer through the shelter at Sumac, but she couldn't. She sighed and rested her head on her front legs. This was boring. But at least this way Sumac wouldn't get in trouble because of her again... The filly closed her eyes, and after a while, sighed and slipped off to sleep.
Some time later, Punk trotted up to the injured stallion. "You look like you've been through hell. Did my ankle-biter bite off more than she could chew?" That was the most logical reason as to why Sumac was so injured.

Sumac felt a bit bad seeing the filly disappear inside of what could only be described as a cage. Giving into his pity he started to hum. His voice a deep and steady hum just as his hooves held a steady beat even if he didn’t know it himself. He only stopped when he saw Punk coming up. Clearing his throat he stood up. He gave Punk a half grin at the first comment. “Well I’d love to say yes just to be rid watching foals forever, but no. This trouble would have come if she had been there or not. She only made things a bit more complicated..” He shook his head. “You need to teach her not to try and move a mountain by herself. She’ll only break and that would be a shame since she has such a tender heart.”
