"Well that's loads better, then."
Brilliant. Not only were monsters real and bent on the destruction of people around them but there was also an entire army on the lose that could either make him evil if they were strong enough or would just try to kill him if they couldn't convert him. Convert or die. What a bloody concept, literally. Was there any upside to this seemingly thankless job? So far he had yet to see one. At least he knew people could find love in costume if this old guy could.
"At least you have a partner." he muttered, kicking the dust.
He didn't much feel like singing anymore.
"So what stops us from just not?" he asked, genuinely curious. "Why would anyone choose this? We could just choose not to power up and patrol, couldn't we?"
Not that he intended to just yet but if he needed to take a break while on assignment and risked, I dunno, exploding he wanted to know that up front. He could not afford to risk self detonating for something he didn't really ask for. The bloody toy had just appeared and all he did was touch the shiny thing. After that Vesuvius appeared and now he didn't really have a choice but to play along.
"And what about a personal life? We have our day jobs and our separate identities but how does that work? Can we tell our significant others or is there this oath I'm supposed to swear and keep everything a secret like Superman?"

"I suppose you could choose not to," Camelot said thoughtfully, as if he had never considered it. That was not the truth of the matter, of course. He had considered it before. More than considered it, really. There were always days when he thought it might be better for him, for his family, for his friends, if he just pretended his life was normal, and he was not some warrior knight in a hidden and magical war through space and time.
But that was not the easy answer it seemed, and he had never really even tried to live up to that kind of an ideal. It was impossible, and it was selfish. He wanted to keep his loved ones safe, but pretending he didn't see what was going on around him was not the answer.
He shook his head and sighed.
"Personally, I find it difficult to walk thorough the day, seeing what I can see now. Knowing why these strange events happen, and what the causes are. I wouldn't be able to live with myself, just looking away, when I've been given the ability to do something about it. But not everyone thinks that way, and it's okay to be unsure, and to pick your own path. But for myself..."
He imagined he didn't need to finish the sentence again.
"It's generally not a safe idea to tell anyone about who you are or what we do. It can put them in danger, make them targets. And sometimes, they just don't understand. So, yeah, basically, we're like those classic super heroes. The magic we use to power up protects our identities, even from people that know us, and it's safer to keep it that way."

"Getting better and better."
For Donovan it was a little bit easier to just pack up and leave. He was used to it, picking up and going from place to place for his job. And, to be honest, he'd been doing it for most of his adult life. That's why he really hadn't ever had a serious girlfriend in his life. That's why he was still couch surfing at twenty five years old. The idea of being to attached to anyone or anything just scared him. When you get attached to something you give it power over you and that power was just not something he was prepared to risk. Like, ever. So bring on the beer and the women!
"What I mean, though, is that I'm not going to explode or anything if I don't power up, right?"
He hadn't really lived in Destiny City long enough to really see a lot of the strange things that happened there, things he couldn't explain. Though in his brief tenure he had seen the Carnival incident and rogue wraiths. Thankfully he could still leave when he wanted to. He just couldn't risk being on assignment and then suddenly being a pirate in the middle of a shoot. His supervisors would not understand. Not at all.
"I'm safe, right?"

"Oh, no, you won't explode. You don't have to power up, there's no literal obligation to it. But ah. As I said, there might be a moral one... or maybe not," he didn't know the other man, after all. And while he could not simply stay powered down and pretend not to see the monster lurking in the dark, that was not something that everyone felt.
He'd always had a white knight complex, even when he was a civilian, before the concept of knights had even come into play. Let alone before he became one himself.
"You'll be fine, as far as that goes, don't worry." He nodded his head, having never heard of anyone that couldn't control their powering up. He smiled thinly and nodded his head, shrugging.
"It's up to you to decide what you want to do with the power you're given. I believe in defending those that cannot do it themselves. That is the path I've chosen for myself. Your path... lies ahead of you. If you do have any questions, or need any help, you can come find me at the library. It's where I patrol, and where I work."
