Melvin smiled as Rep sputtered, just confirming his own suspicions. "Well, if you were wondering, this island isn't exactly under any sort of government. I'm sure anyone could get married to anyone they want to. It's not like we work under any sort of laws. That is unless you wanted to do it off island, and then you'd have to just get someone willing to do the ceremony or do vows on your own. One of my aunts did that."
He watched Rep to see if he was dead serious about it. "We're dead anyways. Documentation and laws don't matter in the end for hunters."

Rep was somewhat bemused as his rant against marriage seemed to get completely ignored. "I don't care if the island is under any kind of laws or not, I'm not like, even considering it! I just said I wasn't interested!" Why did Melvin never listen to his actual words? It wasn't fair when people ignored the words and read into meaning instead and as far as he was concerned it shouldn't be allowed.
"It's not something that has even like ever come up. And its not going to." Not everyone shared his grand exaggerated opinions of the entire procedure, not everyone thought the same way he did. He ran a hand through his hair and scowled. "Neither of the guys are interested, it's just a stupid pointless ceremony and what's the point as hunters anyway? People just die. And like it would make a difference in the end dying alongside your boyfriend or something more than that." Except even as he said it he figured it would make a difference, it would make a difference in perceptions and that was what it was all about in the end. Permanence versus a stupid fling.
Why the ******** was he even discussing this with Melvin?
"It's just dumb okay?"

Melvin raised his hands. "Okay. Okay. I was just saying." He dropped his hands before taking off his goggles to clean them. Rep seemed like he wanted to, but it seemed like a boyfriends not wanting to thing. Titles made a difference though, but would did you expect with a group of 3 guys dating that they wouldn't want to marry. Most gay couples he noticed in college only lasted a week.
"I have to check to see if my sample didn't explode. Are you going to be okay?"

"Aye. I'll be fine. I always am." he grunted, looking away in the direction of the beach. "I'm going to go for a swim. It usually helps."
He sighed irritably as if gratitude was a tremendous effort. "Thanks." and without giving it time to get awkward, he turned and stalked off in the direction of the beach.

Melvin watched him go.

"Goddammit, Saliva." He huffed, turning and walking back to the labs.
