Melvin wasn't about to spend all this time fighting with teenagers. They were going to get killed if they didn't talk to each other. How this mess happened would be left to their reports. Getting out to make those reports was the most important thing at the moment, and he had to rely on these two to make it. "Fine. Whatever. Let's just kill these things before they swarm us."
Moving on.
When Ofelia called out, Melvin reached back and pulled out the daggers. It was his first time using them, and he hoped they worked well. "Got it. Be prepared to use that charge." He took the handles and threw them into the ground. They gripped and a barrier rose between him and Ofelia, shimmering before them.
"Go!"

Seeing as Melvin had set up the runic daggers to defend him and Ofelia, it meant Jake didn't have to do it, which meant he could finally ATTACK.
Chester was ignored as Jake grinned, hungering to let the blade taste fear.
The enemy vanished before he could attack, and he grunted as something lashed at him, making him stumble.

As soon as the barrier daggers hit the ground Ofelia was off, nearly kicking Jake to the back with an angry hiss. His actions were needed, he should have stuck to defending instead of being useless, and the runes along both sets of her weapon started to glow a burning red.
It only took a moment for her to unless it all, practically cracking the cement in the process, and although it made the hallucinations easier for a moment or two they were still there. Ofelia wasn't coping well but she wasn't about to panic either. Backlash came and got her even with the barrier, it stung but her shield held, and she jumped back to prepare herself for another round.
"Jake, if yer not gonna attack it then don't." Her words were a pointless gesture. "Stick wit' defendin' fer now, we'll use ya when our shields are down."

Melvin stopped his aiming to look at Ofelia. "Woah. We're a team here. Jake, if you are charged up or want to attack, just shout. I can defend you." He looked back at Ofelia. "I can defend between the both of you. It's fine." He said, not wanting to keep someone who had the power or the charge from going full force. Personally, Melvin wasn't that much of a fighter and preferred defending. It was what he usually did, and he didn't want any fights to break up now just because Jake had missed. If they were relying on that, Melvin was going to be shoved in the back as well. He could shoot, he just wasn't always a straight shot.
He turned to Ofelia. "We're a team, remember?" He tried to get through to her. She was a Sun and packed the power, but saying someone to just not attack came off as sounded as if he was being scolded for trying.
"Just tell me when you want to switch. I can defend you, Ofelia." He just wanted to keep this damn ship from sinking.
During his, the barrier broke and Melvin rose his gun to fire, watching as one of the shapes jumped back out of range. Damn!

Jake only glared at Ofelia, tempting to tell her to not hog the action before an annoyed Chester cut him off.
Jake growled, but despite Chester's nagging, he knew the weapon was right.
"Whatever, just defend your royal highness here, since apparently she's the only one who can get in an attack." he muttered to Melvin, clearly displeased with the fact he was stuck on defending duty like some, some Moon.

Jake was defending her still long after the barrier snapped, apparently he knew where he stood, and as Ofelia felt Rue slip more and more into her brain and into her bloodstream (figuratively) her concern over them and just the concern over hitting the target came into play.
A creature hopped out at her from the mist, she destroyed it, and a hiss of unhappiness at the entire attack not being defended against made her shield shudder. She wasn't at half-way down, she was certainly doing better than the two trainees she brought along, and Ofelia looked at Melvin as he made a remark about being able to defend her as well. "Ah'd rather ya looked after one 'nother - Ah'm a Sun, we're made ta take hits an' keep goin'."
Of course looking at them was so weird with the gas in her system, everything was a lot more. . . .surreal that it should have been. Her nerves were fraying at their edges.

Melvin didn't bother going through with that remark as he too aimed and fired. "Sun or not, you can still get hurt. At least tell us if you need any help." He would watch Jake too in case he saw his weapons glow enough to suggest a charge. None of those should be wasted just because someone said they should only defend.
Feeling a little light headed, he turned in time to shot out at a crawling figure that was trying to move in low to the ground. The creature saw him point his gun and jumped back into the mass of faceless bodies before he could hit it.

Watching Melvin attack was almost as painful as defending Ofelia, though, there was some reassurance that at least he wasn't the only one sucking.
"Seriously. Don't even bother attacking. It's kinda sad watching you fail."
At this rate, if he kept it up, they would be likely short a member, not that he was complaining, but even just him defending Ofie, it wasn't enough. He could only fend off the creature for so long, and he kinda wanted to just get this over with and LEAVE.

Jake's protection wasn't as strong as it was before, probably because he was running his mouth to Melvin in some sort of pissing contest (Ofelia was tuning them out) but it was safe to say her attacks were also not hitting as much. Her shield dropped below half-strength, Melvin looked like he was barely on his last legs, and the teen smacked down another approaching creature before she decided what to do. She could attack still, even without someone defending her, but the others were getting torn apart.
And they didn't want to listen to her tell them not to attack, just defend because heaven forbid anything pass her first mistake make it to air. Melvin was a stubborn jackass and Jake was a stupid kid. She'd picked a perfect team, but at least she'd try and get them home.
"Melvin, can ya keep fightin'? Heal yerself up if ya got anythin', an' switch wit' Jake fer defense until ya either catch a charge or yer breath is back. Jake, try an' prove me wrong by attack an' hittin' that thing. If yer shield drops be'low half let me know an' we'll swap out again." It sounded stupid, they wouldn't listen to her in the slightest, but she had to try. "Ah'm still good ta go fer damage but Ah'm under wit' mah shield an' one strike away wit' mah chrage." She flexed her knuckles inside Rue, trying to think. "If anyone a'side'a me's got boosters fer yer weapons, use 'em."

Melvin glanced back at Jake, close to turning his gun on the teenager. "Fine. You do better." He told him, deciding he'd switch out.
He was feeling miserable, and he didn't need to be told twice about healing up. "I got it." he told Ofelia, already opening his medic tin and pulling out a bandage. Just as he was pressing the bandage on, a creature leapt out and swiped, effectively knocking his hand away and sending the bandage to drop on the ground.
He simply stared at it, thinking that his luck couldn't get any better right now.

This whole team was just full of fail. It'd be a miracle of they made it back alive.
Seeing that his defense was starting to lack (seriously, he wasn't cut out to be a moon) and he had a full charge, he attempted another attack, only to end up missing. This just wasn't his day.

When it looked like they were going to continue to listen to her Ofelia sort of felt relieved? It wasn't good that Melvin had his bandages slapped away, the guy looked rough and she felt around in her pocket. She had a set she could give him or Jake, depending on who would need it the most in the end, but feeling around also let her know she had a runic torch still to use.
The torch was activated, flaring up, and the teen nodded to the others. They were going to make it, even if Jake and Melvin had less than stellar accuracy.

We could try what you're looking into.
Still leaves us doing defense.
Sighing, he moved positions beside Ofelia, not saying a word. This wasn't due to her order, but out of necessity because of his low shield. "Well, you said you wanted to be a leader."

The two of them being reduced to defending some stupid redhead.

Ofelia wasn't even thinking of rolling her eyes or doing anything of that sort to either guy and their comments. She knew she was a shitty leader - Suns followed orders, not gave them - but at least they were...both protecting her. That was great and all but atfer her second charge all she could do was basic damage.
"Thanks." She said sheepishly as her blades connected with a faceless form. The torch was helping, the guys were doing great. She might have sucked but at least they were okay for now. "We're charged, get ready."
