"Look at me. Look at me, Jerry, and tell me you believe me."

He eased his look up to her face, his eyes trembling with the effort of not blinking. If he blinked, he'd start weeping and it would all be over. "I believe you," he whispered.
It was something. He needed to stand down. For Sasha's good. For his own sanity.

She wasn't sure if she believed him or not.
"I hope you find yourself, Jerry. I hope you do, because I really believe it's the only way you can be happy. Or, at the very least, content."

He nodded, inhaling deeply through his nose before letting it out through his mouth. Jerry place. "I should probably go," He whispered.

Sasha opened her mouth as if something teetered on the tip of her tongue, as if she had something that she wanted to say - but she closed her lips, pressing them tightly together. All she did was nod before clearing her throat, attention moving to the papers that were splayed in front of her.

He didn't move, though, brows furrowed, eyes now locked on her ahead of him. Suddenly, his hand reached forward to gently take her's, and before she could protest he carefully placed it against his lips. It wasn't a kiss, his eyes closed as he simply took in the feeling of her knuckles against his sensitive lips.

Her first instinct was to pull away from him. Sasha immediately tensed, especially when he pressed his lips to her skin. She refrained, instead allowing the contact for a brief, brief moment before gently trying to pull away.
If he didn't let go, things might get ugly - everything about her posture made that very, very clear.

He did let go, deflating in his chair. If he had gotten to the horseman island sooner, would things have been different? If he had caved and just done what she had wanted back after the last mission, would things have been different? How long had she and Wash....
It was an endless cycle of thoughts that went no where. He was alone. And there was nothing he could do about it.

He shifted, expecting some sort of reaction, anything, but nothing came. It was probably a good thing.
He scratched at his scarred cheek, glancing away, "Do.... do you want coffee or... or tea or anything?"

Sasha's expression was inscrutable. She crossed her arms over her chest and watched him for a long moment before clearing her throat again.
There was a part of her that wanted to say yes - not because she wanted the tea, but because she wanted to keep him close, keep him hopeful and curious about her motivations.
There was another, more forceful and demanding part of her that made her pause and recognize that doing something like that might hurt Wash - and hurting Wash was the last thing she wanted to do.
"No. No, thank you, Jerry. I'm just going to finish what I'm doing here before grabbing a bite to eat."

"Oh," He mumbled, shifting in his seat again. "Okay." Another deep breath and he slowly got the hint that they were done. He stood, gently pushing his chair back in as he did so. "Look... I'm. I'm sorry. About me." He managed finally, eyes trembling across the piles of books. "I um. Do want to... to be friends. At least."

Sasha nodded, chewing on her lip before lifting her eyes to meet his.
"I'd like that."

His mouth trembled into a weak smile as their eyes met, but immediately dropped down again in the universal sign of shattered confidence. He wanted to ask her what she was researching, just relax and spend time, and... talk.
But somehow he felt he was already on thin ice.
This talk had been.... good. Could have gone worse. The only way it would have gone better in his mind would be if she had thrown it all to the side and put her arms around him and-
That aint going to happen, bud. I'm sorry to say. Chick just aint into your sniveling a**.
She had Wash now. He was more stable, more confident, kinder, selfless... everything he wished he could be but wasn't. She deserved him. Deserved better than Jerry Collins.
"I'll um. See you later, then?"

It was so hard not to shoosh him away. So, so, so very hard. Instead, she gave him a toothy, brilliant smile.
Way too toothy, way too brilliant, way too smiley.
"Of course. It's a small island."
