Ailin had just about touched every egg on this side of the clutch. Only the Languid egg remained before he could work his way to the other side. He approached the small egg with caution. Ailin had learned that the outward appearance of a shell did not always give lie to the the temperament of the dragon within. Gently he placed his palm on the small smokey egg and braced for a response.

He relaxed as the warm hello washed over him. A smile crossed his face as he knelt before the egg. A few moments could be spared for the passive seeming creature inside. Before too long though he felt the need to rise too his feet. He bade farewell to the hatchling within, wondering briefly if the regret he felt was his own.

Passing by the eggs he'd already touched Ailin paid the briefest respects to the Jitterbug egg, his hand gently grazing the large gold shell. He barely felt the wave of playfulness before he was already past and onto the next egg.

The Swelling egg was another he spent maybe a little too long with. It was gentle personalities like these that reminded him of why he'd felt the way he had after the last Hatching. Dragonriding wasn't just about Flights, or fighting Thread, or each other. There was the bond between dragon and rider, that rumored feeling of never being alone, or judged. Of having that one soul that beat in perfect rhythm with yours. It was definitely regret he felt when he left the side of the amber colored egg.

She was buzzing with energy and bravery after her encounter with the self-absorbed egg. Darsha took a moment to look around again, smoothing her hair and tugging at her tunic while she plotted her next move. The young candidate really had no idea how much impact this touching might end up having on her chances at Impressing... she knew that sometimes a dragon didn't find it's companion within the candidates. Sometimes they found Theirs within the stands. And sometimes... but Darsha quickly pushed the thought of any of these precious hatchlings going between out of her mind. It would not do for her to have any thoughts like that lurking around in the corners of her mind and scaring the vulnerable creatures.

With a shake of her head, Darsha straightened up and marched determinedly towards the Circles Within Circles egg. She took a moment to just stare at it in awe, the complex pattern on the shell was impressive. Darsha had never seen dragons eggs before this touching, but none of the other eggs had been marked so elaborately. She wondered who was inside, and ran her hand lightly over the shell in an attempt to find out. It didn't slam into her mind, but she could feel it there, searching. Darsha attempted to stand as still as possible and allow the presence to look around until it was content, though the sensation tickled a little and she couldn't help wrinkling up her nose and sneezing at the sensation. You should be more careful when steal pies from the kitchen. A little voice said, startling Darsha into breaking contact with the egg. How could it have known?

Elated and reeling a little bit, Darsha noticed that the Jitterbug egg was, for the moment, alone. She approached the golden egg reverently, laying her hand on it gently and felt a grin split her face as the little queen inside barraged her with questions. Darsha was careful to leave her mind open so the inquiring mind could poke about for the answers she was looking for. The slender young girl stood with the golden egg slightly longer then was strictly appropriate, but she eventually disentangled herself from the little queen and made her way to the next egg, still grinning. This whole touching thing was so much more fun than she had expected it to be!

Medura

Medura finally greeted the Jitterbug Egg bowing to the Queen and laying her gently on the shell. Her distrust was not too badly misplace as her mind was flooded with questions, but they weren't too unpleasant. However it certainly was surprising, but at least she had been polite. Removing her hand she gave the egg a small nod and maybe a slim little smile at it and her own scarred features in the reflection from the shell. Glancing at the other eggs she figured she had greeted the gold enough that maybe it was better to go give the poor neglected Crimson's clutch a greeting. Leaving through the little tunnel she made her way over to Hyweth's clutch. Bowing before the crimson she moved to touch the Shivering Egg smiling at the questions it had. It seemed all the hatchlings had questions. Well her name was Medura and she was from Benden and the sun was a bright glowing orb made of gas. She knew this. She was a starcrafter.

Hyweth had spotted Medura, already yellow eyes whirling furiously. They had a tinge of red to them. Oh, no, she was not at all pleased by the girl's fancy-work and bowing. None of these candidates present had any right to her eggs! Why were they here? Mine. I do not want them here. They had been having this argument since early that morning. J'len had attempted to sooth Hyweth's wrath with the assurance that the candidates would not be staying--that the faster they were able to interact with the eggs, they would leave.

Hyweth had not been at all appeased by this knowledge. There were too many people! Too many dragons! Hatteth! Why will mine not make these leave? Will yours? Have yours command them to leave! I do not want these candidates here. Surely if hers would not, Hatteth's would?

The crimson wrapped coiled her tail more tightly around her clutch, eyeing Medura warily.

Medura

Medura bowed again as the crimson circled her clutch backing away respectfully. "I wanted to pay my respects to you and your clutch beautiful Hyweth. I didn't think it was right that most of the other candidates have lingered at Sunneth's clutch. I apologize if I displeased you." Medura apologized eyeing the crimson warily, but held her bow deciding to wait until the crimson allowed her back near the eggs.

J'nes and Hatteth were sitting in the stands, where J'len and Hyweth could see him. They weren't allowed on the sands (a fact Hatteth had protested to his rider about), but they got as close as they were allowed and were watching the proceedings around Hyweth's clutch intently.

At Hyweth's question, Hatteth answered, They have to be here. The Candidates need to meet the eggs. The hatchlings inside will start to meet the Candidates so they can find Theirs more easily. Of course J'nes had had to explain this to Hatteth a couple times before he accepted it. These may not be his eggs, but they were his weyrmate's eggs, and he was just as concerned about them as she was. Well, at least almost as concerned. He wasn't trying to keep anyone away from them.

They will not hurt the eggs, he assured her. I am watching them, and so are you and ours. Between the four of us, we can see everything they do. We will be sure they are very careful.

Wen paused as he reached to touch The Slender Egg. They were missing a candidate. He gave the Slender egg a gentle stoke, just catching a glimpse of the self confidence before walking into the small tunnel to the other clutch. Where else would the brightly dress young woman be?

He did not bow to Hyweth, instead he kept his eyes on her as he walked towards Medura. "I don't think she is ready for us yet. Please, go to the other side," he requested calmly. The Crimson dragon's eyes were yellow and just a smidgen of red. They could wait till she was ready.

Already candidates were moving to the crimson's clutch and he was only halfway through Suunath's. Maybe he HAD spent too much time with the Languid and Swelling eggs. Ailin picked up the pace a little bit and went first to the Head First egg.

The movement within the egg had him on alert even as he was mentally assaulted by the dragonet inside. It didn't seem unfriendly but the jumbled emotions and words only managed to give him a sense of not wanting to be there. He moved on.

The bright blue Self Absorbed Egg was next. Ailin could almost agree that life wasn't rather bright at the moment. Not like it had been before. Maybe you will be the one to bring back life's glow. He thought at it before receiving a sharp reprimand for his dour outlook.

With raised eyebrows Ailin moved to a much smaller egg, placing his hands on the dark blue swirls of the Circles-within-Circles egg. This one felt similar to the brief brush of the gold he'd felt. Are you a little girl as well? He wondered. There was no direct answer though vague memories danced through his mind. Some of them things he hadn't thought of since leaving home...

Ahmenna composed herself and moved on from gold egg to the The Pacifist Egg, trying to move in some sort of order. Almost immediately, she felt a motherly feeling coming from the egg. It was as if the egg wanted to sit her down and wrap her up from the world. Giving a rare smile, 'Menna shook her head. "It's okay to keep an eye out but if you stay safe for too long, sometimes you miss out on great things." Stroking the egg, she continued. "I bet you have a kind heart though."

Were eggs supposed to be so different from each other so soon? Ahmenna didn't know. People were different but they took longer to show who they truly were and some of them never showed their true colors. Which was why it was so hard to trust outsiders. But if she Impressed it would have to be done. The 'Circles-Within-Circles' Egg was next in the hustle and bustle of moving about... How many eggs were left to touch? This shell reminded her of the midnight sky, so dark a blue it was almost impossible to see the markings on it. A quick touch and she jerked her hand back. It was like something had tickled her palm. And what was that weird feeling in her head? "How about we save that for later? I like my thoughts to be my own if you don't mind." Suddenly, she felt chastised, like this one did not approve of what it saw or what she said. Harrumphing, Ahmenna moved onward to the Play Nice Egg.

Finally, as she touched the egg, this one was she liked! This egg seemed polite and curious. A sense of how can I help you, almost like a young child in it's happiness at being included filtered through her. Ahmenna kept her hand on the shell a moment longer as she spoke to it softly. "Well now, how do you do? I am well, that you for your kindness. Don't worry, you will be out soon." Looking around, she wondered how Kharmeen was faring. Which way next?

````````````````````````
Kharmeen moved to The Slender Egg. It was much longer than the other eggs, or so it seemed to him and it was on it's side. He wondered if it liked being that way or if it just wouldn't stay up. It was very smooth and a very pretty shade of light blue. Laying his hand carefully on the shell, Kharmeen felt a great boost of confidence. So that was the way this fish swam! "Clever beast, are you? Know what you are about? That is good, then no one can walk over you and push you around. Stand your ground, little one. Stand your ground." From there, The Brown Egg was next. He saw Menna working her way on the other side of the nest and wondered if they would meet in the middle before heading to other nest. It seemed plain to some but to Kharmeen, it reminded him of the rich brown of good soil. His family might be Fishercraft but they appreciated the food from the farms.
Lightly touching the egg, the teen felt that this dragon was simply watching the world go by. A simple egg, a simple life. "It is good to be content with what you have but don't let the world pass you by. Sometimes, there are better tidbits out there." His mind felt kind of a blankness but not aggression so Kharmeen could only hope the little one understood him. A step towards The Languid Egg, the smallest one present. Why was it so far away? He knew better than to try to move the egg but as he touched the egg, he felt a keen sense of loneliness, like it wanted to be with the others. "Hello there, why so far away?" A sense of 'please stay' held him there for a moment and he stayed. "Don't worry, you hatch soon and be with yours. But maybe you can get your mother to move you closer." Happiness. It was nice here. "I want to stay but I must visit the others and not hold up the line." Did he have to leave? "Yes, I do. But I will see you soon. Take care."
And Kharmeen felt a little sad walking away.
Darsha's path took her to the Play Nice egg next. It greeted her nicely enough, but she could sense that it was withholding judgement on her, as if it couldn't make up it's mind whether or not she was a worthy sort of person. While the candidate tried not to take it personally - after all, not every egg had to fall in immediate love with her as much as she would adore it if that happened - Darsha didn't linger long there. She suppose she could have stood around caressing the egg and seeing if it would reach a decision, but something urged her onwards and she approached the Knockabout egg. She grinned at the egg's exuberant attitude and spent a moment enjoying it before another candidate came up and touched the bright green shell. In an instant the presence within the egg had shifted it's attention to people and places other than Darsha, so she moved on.
There were only two eggs left in Suunath's clutch. The Bright orangey yellow tones of the Swelling egg appealed to Darsha, and she felt herself being drawn into the egg's desire for the finer things. This was something the young girl could certainly relate to... she had always dreamed of living the high-life. Why else would she be here trying her hardest to Impress a dragon? She could appreciate the supportive and gentle swell that came from within the egg, it inexplicably made Darsha think of her mother, of all people. Reluctantly she left the Swelling egg and turned towards the Opportune Moment egg. She could sense it sizing her up, and she knew exactly what it would find in her: eager ambition with a healthy dose of mischief.
Very well, Hyweth relented at last, raising her gaze to look towards her mate. Know that I am displeased, Hatteth. If they hurt them, I will blame you. Tell yours that after this, he must come down and scrub me. I would like a wherry. Or two. Perhaps a herdbeast. She would blame him even if the candidates didn't hurt the eggs, naturally. She lifted her tail up and away from the eggs to give the candidates easier access, snorting at them.
But wait! That one hadn't shown her proper respect! The crimson made a show of flexing one wing, and then the other. Her gleaming hide, didn't they see how lovely she was? She flicked her tail at the boy to show her displeasure before she settled, watching the two closest candidates carefully.
"I think she's ready now," J'len muttered to the candidates, gesturing to the eggs. She glanced up at Hyweth and shook her head. "Silly, they're not here to hurt them. They're here to admire them."
PostPosted: Fri Nov 30, 2012 7:40 pm
Wen took in the flaring of the wings and caught his social mistake. "I'm sorry great lady," he said respectfully and bowed a little deeper to Crimson Hyweth then he had Gold Suunath in apology. He stayed in the vulnerable position a bit longer then he wished before rising. "I did not mean to be rude. I did not wish to pressure you into revealing your eggs for touching before you were ready. They are all rather gorgeous," he soothed, voice truthful and calm. "May I touch them?" He approached the clutch but kept a few yards away.
Ahmenna tried to figure out which way to go next. She moved towards the Swelling Egg just as Kharmeen did and they grinned at each other. She might be the elder by half a Turn but they were close as shipfish to each other. He was her brother. Reaching her hand out first, her good mood continued as a positive vibe flowed into her. This egg was happy with the finer things in life, watching from a distance. "I agree with you little one. Set back and observe the good times. Keep those memories for later. Nothing is better than a calm sea to soothe your nerves."
Giving her cousin a slight bow, she stepped towards the Self-Absorbed Egg and was shocked at such a difference in personalities. This egg wanted out now to participate in what was going on. No sitting by and letting life go on without it. "Haha, I bet you and your sibling snip at each other. How different you two are in the shell. Life is alive and vibrant but don't forget the little details too." Chuckling, she turned back to the Swelling Egg and shook her head. "I can't wait to see you two together." Seven eggs touched and five to go. How long did they have before being moved to Hyweth's clutch? Ahmenna hated being rushed and not doing things right. A rushed job was a flawed job. As she stepped towards the Knockabout Egg, it wobbled. Good grief! Were they supposed to move on their own? Blinking, Ahmenna reached out anyway and was surprised at how exuberant this egg was.. It was happy to see her and then... Shiny object. "Always going are you? I am happy to see you as well. What a bundle of energy you are... I hope someone can keep you steady."
Stepping away, she took a deep breath. Almost done here.
`````````````````````````````
Kharmeen stepped up to the Swelling Egg just as Ahmenna did. Letting her go first, he watched her reaction and response. Curious, he nodded as his cousin moved on and it was his turn to touch the egg. Why this egg was a calm as the dawn of day! Positive and almost like it was encouraging him, he ran his hand down the shell. "It is nice just to sit back and relax. No need to be busy all the time. A time for rest and a time for work. Just remember that." Hopefully, this little one could be a hard worker as well as appreciating the finer things in life.

Next, to The 'Circles-Within-Circles' Egg. This one was dark and deep in color. Kharmeen laid both hands on the shell only to feel it poking and prodding at him. Nosy little bit, it was! Still, if that was what it needed in order to find his rider, Khar' supposed he could stand his thoughts being trifled with... But not for too long. "Know what you are looking for? I don't have much in there." It felt like the egg snorted at him before trembling with energy again. Shrugging, he dropped his hands. "Alright, but I warned ya." The Pacifist Egg was right there so right there was where Kharmeen went. It almost felt like one of his many Aunts. Always looking out and trying to keep an eye on everyone.

"Would you scold be if I stepped out of line?" Khar chuckled. If there was one thing he learned, it was not to go against a woman on a rampage. "I bet you keep all the others in line. But it's okay to let them go and be with their riders." A light scolding, like he didn't know what he was talking about and just to let it handle things. "A good heart will get you far with others. Take care, love."

Two eggs remained, Ailin looked through the passage that separated the two clutches. How would this be handled during the hatching he wondered? Would the eggs be moved together (and would the mothers allow it?) Or would the candidates be separated, or shuffled between the two?

He stroked the spotted shell of the Pacifist egg. It was quiet, little sound or movement came from the egg, only a feeling of watchfulness. It seemed to feel it was in charge though it was only middling in size for the clutch. Maybe a small bronze? Ailin didn't mind either way, whatever was inside felt like they'd be considerate in their dealings with others.

Finally the last egg of Suunath's lay before him. The little dark green shell reminded him of the jungle undergrowth. The hatchling within was much more welcoming though. The offer of help was politely declined. What he needed he doubted the little one within could give.

With that Ailin took his leave of the gold's clutch and the crush of candidates still swarming it. He walked slowly through the passage, looking all around as he came into the smaller Sands that had become the crimson's temporary home. Seeing the angry state of the clutch mother Ailin bowed from behind the gathered candidates. Was she preventing their progress?

.................

From the Stands surrounding Hyweth's clutch a scritching noise could be heard. Cai sat in the empty expanse, charcoal stick flying through the last few pages of her journal. At Benden she'd only seen an atypical once in passing. Their crimson as far as she knew had never clutched... doubtful she would even be allowed to try. Cai had no idea what they weyr had planned to do with the crimson and rider. She could only hope that the Revolution had brought some good in giving the dragon pair a chance to find a more welcoming home.

Here at Trine however Cai intended to learn as much as she could from this rare event. Lessons and scrolls and theories were all fine but each paled in comparison of examining the real thing. She only regretted the opportunity to get up close and personal like the candidates. Not that she wanted to be a part of their number. No, she'd rather examine them on her own, un-rushed. She had no desire to put aside her studies and passion to play their games on the off chance of Impression. Her calling was healing.

No doubt, many would be pestered by the red headed healer afterwards for what they could remember of the eggs. Any notes on differences between them and the gold's clutch would be added to her already crowded journal.

Haeeeth rumbled at Hyweth's demands, but his eyes were blue-green, so it was not an unhappy sound. I will get you food, and mine will scrub you. After the candidates leave. And they need to see the eggs before they can leave. Still, he lowered his head a bit so he was that much closer to the people milling about on the sands.

J'nes watched the candidates approach. They were arriving more slowly than they did for the gold clutch, trickling in instead of coming all at once. Probably all for the best, to let Hyweth get used to the idea more gradually. Perhaps distracting her would be more effective. Hatteth, could you relay a message to Hyweth? One of the advantages of having a dragon; he could talk to her across the expanse of the sands without having to yell loud enough for everyone in the Hatching Grounds to hear. Ask what kinds of dragons does she think are in your eggs? I bet there will be a lot of atypicals in there. Crimson clutches usually do.
