“Nah, I am fairly certain.” Hel replied with a nod, and then took another sip of her cider.
“Nooooooo Gramps!” Hel wailed, and leaned, flopping against the Famine Sage in exasperation. “I could die any day! I need to live every day like it is my last! Fast and furious ~ Being a Trick or Treater…there is no telling what I will get myself into in the future…” Hel trailed off thoughtfully, and pouted when Sal pat her head like a small child…but her body immediately relaxed and she leaned into the feeling of his fingers petting through the back of her hair.
“Ya!” She exclaimed, but right after didn’t seem so sure. “…I mean…ya…I am pretty certain?” Oh…well…now that she was thinking about it…wait, no. No, she didn’t need to think about it. “I mean…when you part from someone, it is not like you will never see them again…and besides, he wants to be a Ferryman.” That was pretty self explanatory, right?

Sal rolled his eyes as the little one threw yet another tiny tantrum. This time though, she threw it against him, and so after his little eye roll he looked down at her, listening to her wild claims about dying any day and thus needing to seize it. Well, she wasn't wrong. The Sage could hardly fault the little Valkyrie for wanting to make use out of her time, since there was no real guarantee she would have it in spades. As she went on to flip flop between her knowledge of her Companion's feelings, Sal found himself chuckling almost sadly over his cider.
"I always find you young ones so fascinating." He started, practically coo'ing over his words; he really did find them fascinating. In an adorable, tolerating sort of way; watching youth take and make their own paths was always fun, even if he didn't quite agree with them. "You are all quite sure of yourselves! In one breath I'm told one could die any day, and in another I hear the certainty that one will always see someone again. It's a little contradictory, isn't it?" Now that he knew was false...in a technical sense. Sure they came back in memories - he had his own after all, and they had come to haunt him once or twice since his arrival - but it wasn't the same. It wasn't them, it was just a figment. The part of someone that only lived in memories long since made.
"If there is one lesson I could part on your youthful, energetic mind...it would be this: It's true that you may die any day, but so could your friends, family and loved ones." He held up his index finger matter of factly, and then gestured his whole hand to the staircase nearby as if to prove a point. "And there is nothing more depressing than words left unsaid."

Hel opened her mouth once more to whine and pout about how patronizing Sal was being, but oddly enough, she was listening as he spoke, and that simple observation had Hel frozen. Suddenly it was like someone had shed light on an area that was previously cast in darkness. That feeling of ‘AH HA’ and ‘OH, so that’s what that means’, or ‘I see and understand now’. She had been focused entirely on herself, but he was right. Someone could happen to those she cared about too. They weren’t always going to be around like she assumed, and if something could happen to her, Trick or Treater or not, something could happen to someone else too.
If something happened right now…would she regret the things she was thinking, but were left unsaid? Yes. Yes, she would.
Hel’s hand flopped onto her lap, and her mouth, which had previously been left hanging open, snapped shut. She stared off into the distance for a long moment before she suddenly snapped back to attention, ruffling the back of her hair. “…Ya. You are correct.” She murmured softly.

Sal just smiled a knowing smile. He understood that realization; sadly, he didn't have someone else to tell it to him. It was always something he knew deep down, but like the ghoul he had patronized for it he always believed that there would be another tomorrow, and another, and another...every day until eternity. The truth he never wanted to acknowledge was all too real now, and if he could help one person not share his fate, that would make it a good day.
"I bet you bones you have many unsaid things to get out." Hey, he liked sucker bets as much as the next person! "With that being said, you have once more surprised me, little filly." He chuckled, taking a small sip of his cider. "With your personality and all the stomping around you've done already, I half expected you to high tail it out of here."

Hel groaned, flopping back onto the couch and rubbing her hands on her face. “Do not say that, Grandpa! You are old and growing fragile! You need all the bones you can keep!” What she did do though, more true to her fashion, was roll off the back of the couch and landed on the ground with a thud. She then leapt over said couch and back to where her winter clothes were.
“Hey…ya! I was really close to just bookin’ it but…first thing is first, Old Man…I need to make sure you make it home! After that, then I will be ah…high tailin it…”

"Oh, but I have plenty to spare." He insisted innocently, his fingers drifting to a long strong of various little bones; a lovely gift from his pretty little blue bird, many years ago. A moment of concern flashed across his features as she hit the ground, but it quickly recovered; oh yes, it was on purpose, it happened all the time. Such a troublesome child.
"No no, I will get home on my own. You go say what you need to." Sal set his cider down and stood, straightening and adjusting various robes. Mostly he drew them closer around himself, wrapping himself up in the comforting layers.

“Mmm, just like your wisdom, ya?” She snorted softly, but then pulled on her quilted tunic and then her outer tunic. “No, no, I will walk you home.” The ghoul insisted stubbornly. “Come on, Gramps.”
She pouted, placing her hands on her hips. “Do not make me regret not walking you home.” She grinned a bit then.
