Melvin jerked around when he felt another shoulder touch him, nearly hitting Rin with the back of his gun before he stopped. Good. Good. They had their backs covered, they could keep tabs on each other, and they had eyes out in all directions. They could do this. They wouldn't die. Deus certainly seemed a lot better now after he had been trying to leave it.
He could see the rides moving all around them, the fog swirling with shapes as if an entire army was waiting to form.
When he saw something move in the fog, he shot out, but the fog swirled and lashed out with a large tail before it vanished once again.

With a defence, Rep's hesitance melted away, replaced simply by a steady confidence, even unable to believe what his eyes and body told him, able to assure himself that Melvin and Rin were there, close by and anything he hit wasn't them.
Even with that assurance, it was difficult to meet he wide hollow eyes of the thing as it slithered out of the fog, all twisting pained shapes and intangibility. This time it's claws were deflected, at least a portion of them, and the beating his shield took was lesser.
He lashed out in a sweeping arc with Tracey.

Rin struggled to keep Byr aloft as she carefully slid him around to gently touch the side of his blade to Rep's side. His runes began to flicker wildly before a green glowing mist emanated from the runes to swirl along Rep's shield and repair it. (Not just a defense but a heal as well, he must have felt magical.)
Now you should be the one focusing. Gah, you're starting to get too heavy.
She felt Byr essentially suck in his gut but the damage had already been done. She lowered him to the ground to softly catch her breath. Her arm burned and shook with effort. She passed Rep a quick apologetic look.

He felt winded, gasping for air both due to the smog and his own weak endurance. Despite the training, he felt worn to the bone, easily brushed aside, and he wiped his brow before he aimed again, swallowing hard as he tried to calm himself.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Rin's weapon glow in a fashion he once saw Rep do, and he could only guess that she was giving Rep a boost much like he once done when they were first sparring. It was a skill he felt he should learn.
As they moved, he caught someone standing in the dark. A woman, standing, eyes blinding white, with green creatures crawling over her body. His blood ran cold, his core shaken, before he aimed wildly and shoot.
The woman vanished, but not before throwing a long, slender centipede his way. He jerked back, bumping into both hunters a moment before he balanced himself, looking to make sure she was gone before turning to say he was sorry.
It's all in my head. It's all in my head. It still felt real though.

He really was tripping he realised, the familiar heart racing feeling as a drug kicked in, colours bleeding, details sharp, the smell of the chemical singing in his sinuses.
Rin's heal was a lift to his shield, leaving a lingering impression of cool earth and the rich scent of berries. For just an instant it was like he could breathe, and though the oppressive wall of chemicals collapsed back in on him, the moment was a shining beacon, with teamwork they could do this.
Melvin was caught in combat with the thing, but always it seemed to leave the others and return to him, focus on him - he wasn't sure if it was his own perceptions that skewed it that way. All that mattered was that when it did, it drew into sharp focus, each time in more and more clarity. It wasn't just the fog that had his heart racing as the creature turned to him once again, tall, thin and humanoid, skin stretched and drawn across narrow features, long dark hair plastered across its pallid skull. Fingers long and bony, skeletal and accusing.
It was getting familiar.
Maybe they couldn't do this.
He felt sick and Tracey felt heavy, too heavy to swing.
The claws bit into his shield and he let them.

"You can do this!" Rin cried out as she hauled Byr up again to try and swing at the creature that stood before them. She too missed and found herself winded. Still. The creature backed up. It gave what Rin saw as breathing room even as it sent a tendril that cracked across Rin's shoulder painfully.
She lowered Byr again.

Melvin felt worn, hands shaking as he looked to the pair. He couldn't even tell if they were winding or if they were just being worn down slowly till they would soon be swallowed whole. As Rin went to work with Rep, he saw she kept lowering her axe. Now with only one arm, the weight for her must have been terrible and a strain on her shoulders.
Reaching into his pocket, he took out a medical pouch he decided to keep his bandages in ever since he started watching Harrison out on the training fields together. Pulling one out, he moved to her, stopping when he knew he couldn't place one on her arm. The stump was to him. "Rin, hold for a sec."
He didn't want to startle her, raising her sleeve up to place a bandage. It was then that she was attacked, and the movement made him panic and just before the bandage could really take hold, it fell off and vanished in the fog around their feet. Reaching down, he felt for it, but knew it wouldn't be any good.
Damn. Double damn. He was totally worthless!!

He didn't feel like he could do this. Everything always seemed to go wrong when he didn't need it to. He was afraid, his hands slippery on the handle of the massive axe, unable to tear his eyes off of the tall looming apparitions. Monsters, strong enough to show up this side of halloween, strong enough to kill things.
Even if he closed his eyes he could see the likeness.
His heart was racing.
Had to be all in his head, had to be.
He was a Sun.
close.> That familiar stable shift of feathers in his thoughts, that sweet, too sweet voice, talons bared. Power that responded as he reached out in his mind, curled around his thoughts, steadying him. It was just a monster, just another target that they needed to bring down. People trusted him.
can do this.>
Narrowing his eyes, he lashed out at the thing, felt the axe connect and saw the peripheral glow as Tracey's runes lit up brilliantly in the fog, bleeding off onto the air as he steadied him.
"I'm charged."

Rin still offered Melvin a quick grateful look before steeling herself again. Rep finally connecting with the horror before them. His words echoed a concept she was only distantly aware of at first before it clued in that... oh... s**t. He needed cover and a lot of it.
She drew Byr up again with the last of her strength and braced for attack. The Ax's blade turned broad in front of Rep like a double-bladed shield. The eyes on the skull in the center wildly flared green.

Melvin noticed the glow, saw it gleam in the fog, and then Rep told them what was going on. His attack. Had he used it since he hurt Rin? Would he use it now? Despite the damage it could do, they were all by his side and the void of fog was before them. If it meant damage at their enemies, that charge was like a glorious gift. It could be what they needed.
"Got it." Melvin said, moving to the other side of Rep and holding out his gun, using his own shield just as Rin had and waiting. It was up to Rep now. The Lifers, the two of them, had his back.

Just a monster. Just a ******** monster ******** with his mind.
Everything about him tensed, that sensation of having talons bleeding over with more vividness than it ever had. It was like going mad, but this time it felt good, this time it felt right. Tracey and him were in sync, this was their job. He shot them glances and nods, making sure they were where he thought they were, curt nods of thanks for their cover.
It tried to attack but was cut off by the two hunters by his side.
He wouldn't let either of them get hurt. Especially not Rin after what he'd done. Never again.
The runes flared again as he turned his gaze on the creature, the obstacle in their way, they dripped like blood to the untended and cracked paving but faded before they touched.
Time stopped for him.
He moved.
The distance from where he stood to the damn abomination was covered at a run unhampered by the massive axe held out to his side like a parody of a wing. He leapt up, higher than a human should ever have been able to, with the several meters clearance he had vanishing up into the fog. It would be looking up, if it had eyes, he thought trying to gauge where he'd come down. With the sheer size of Tracey. It didn't matter.
Dives like these were Tracey's speciality in life, and some remnant of the old instincts lingered. He felt rather than saw the creature, knew where it would be Momentum ran out and gravity pulled him down. He brought the axe over, slicing through the air with a sound like singing. He couldn't see the ground. It didn't matter.
He dropped like a stone, with the full weight of the axe burying itself in what was tangible of the creature, sending it crashing to the ground, the thunk was both heard and felt. The collision was like being hit by a steam train for Rep, his shield eating the backlash the way it always did, shoulders singing with pain as his bones were rattled. It ******** hurt, it always hurt. But it had connected, that was all that ******** mattered. And the scream of pain from the thing wasn't human, it wasn't her, it had never been her.
He had been scared, he was scared no longer, this creature like all of them could die.
It was irrelevant and pitiful. It didn't matter.

Rin felt Byr deflect the oncoming attack just in time to watch Rep run and then leap up. A gesture that once filled her with terror and resulted in near-death for her... viewed from this side. It was exciting and she could feel her heart dance giddily in her chest. Distantly aware that the slight hint of green flickering alongside the bright red was her and Melvin. They did that. They helped create this perfect unstoppable force of destruction. Red tore into blackness, sent it reeling and pitiful. She was no longer afraid. They were stronger. Much much stronger together than any of it.
She turned Byr in her hand and attempted to charge in again, flying on that high Rep created. Unfortunately, a sharp pain dragged the woman back to reality and she completely missed in her efforts. Byr's weight slamming down into the soft wet ground.
Try as she might, fighting directly just wasn't in Rin. Not anymore. She turned Byr up to lean on him like a crutch. Uncertainty in her eyes as she looked back to her comrades and their conditions.
Everyone was still standing. That's what counted.

Melvin watched Rep rushed out, straight into the fog, and he had a moment of worry that he'd vanish and be lost in some fog realm. That was not a mission report he wanted to fill out, and he waited before he saw the ginger rise up to unspeakable heights that made him wonder if there was a trampoline hidden in the fog before he slammed back down, the noise booming around them and swirling the fog around them. There might be a few more cracks in the pavement then there had been before.
With Rin at his side, he watched her as she tried to swing, but he could see the strain on her.
Melvin, I'm charged. Please.
He noticed his gun glowing, but felt himself shying from it, instead moving over to Rin to defend her until Rep came back to their group. "You okay?" It probably wasn't the best thing to say when he felt tired and his own weapon was pleading to him, begging for release.

"I will be." was his curt reply to Melvin as he fished out his runic bandages and slapped it the same place on his arm where he was so used to being bandaged normally. The effect was instant, Tracey seizing hold of the heal with gusto and using it to its maximum effect.
He must have learned at least something off of Harrison.
Hefting Tracey again, his shoulders weren't quite as sore as when he landed, he could go another round or two, or at least cover someone else who could.

Rin moved closer as soon as Rep seemed to settle for a moment. The tendrils already moving back to recuperate. She set Byr down to rest, freeing her hand so she could fish in her pocket. She pulled out her own tin and popped it open with her thumb. She then reached inside to catch a bandage with her teeth, clipping the tin shut and putting it away. She then used her fingers to peel the backing off and retrieve the results and slap the whole thing on Rep's arm, just above the one he'd placed there.
"Defend Melvin So he can attack one more time before he and I have you covered again, okay? We need to keep you winding as long as possible and that requires everyone to have your back," Rin gently pat where both plasters had been placed one last time. There was a certain sort of clarity. Fleeting but there. She felt safe, like they could handle this as a team. It would be okay.
They were still not out of the fire yet and the tendrils seemed to be lurching forth again.
