Harrison listened to the description of B0nez thoughtfully. He was used to the shield, being staticky just- was how things were. He listened to the description of the heal too.
"System Maintenance. Or a System Check. That's what he calls it. It's like, giving him all this information at once- like if something's in there that's not supposed to be, he'll find it. And the shock cleans it out."
He chewed on some kind of rubbery gristle.
"Then there's the other one, he calls that a Power Surge. We get this Street Fighter ball going, and launch it."

"Tracey healing is different I guess, I mean not that I've ever used it much when I'm able to concentrate on what I'm doing. It's like this sort of. Cold dark feeling that.." he trailed off trying to think about it. "Well like, pain is hot. Like Hot and stingy and aching. In my head it kind of looks like fire I guess. Sort of. Tracey's healing feels like a sort of cold blanket to wrap around that warm and fix it. I guess that's maybe the sort of thing you could feel."
For a long time he'd imagined weapons would feel approximately the same for everyone, but the more time went on, the more he realised they varied broadly in many ways. It was strange to think that he might be the only one who knew what it was like to have Tracey in his thoughts, that flitting sharp predatory edge that seemed to bleed over into his own movements more and more, that feeling of cruel darkness that seemed to run in his veins in times of trial. B0nez had felt different, precise but in a different way, cold but also in a different way. It was food for thought.
"There isn't any real names for what he does. I mean there's only two things I can do with a full charge, heal someone or the other thing, the big problematic attack. "
He pushed his mostly empty plate away from himself. "If it had a name it'd probably be "problems" because that's all it ******** causes."

"I didn't know you had a heal," Harrison said, curious. "Guess it makes sense though. Tracey being an angel and all."
Harrison laughed at Rep's name for his charge.
"That's for ******** sure," His eyes lit up, "You should have seen it from the outside. When the fog turned Bix into that monster, and you tore into him. Nobody could look at anything else. The whole battlefield just- stopped. It was like everybody was holding their breath."
He swallowed his pizza.
"There was just this like, explosion of fear-" Harrison balled his hands, "Bpwcooooh," then splayed the fingers in a slow motion, grinning through them at Rep.
"Just be nice if you could do it without sending yourself through 8 feet of dirt."

Rep nodded. "Aye. I just, don't like, use it much." he didn't mention it was primarily because of Melvin's initial adverse reaction to the ability and all the fear of further rejection that came with that. He didn't like the idea of giving someone essentially what was a shard of his soul only for them to throw it ungratefully back in his face. It was a vulnerability he wasn't keen on presenting to anyone unless it was life or death.
He did listen with rapt attention however to the description of his attack during the haunted house, an attack that he could in retrospect barely even remember. "I just remember like, knowing I had to attack him, having a charge and then just a blank. There's this weird feeling where it's like. I lose Tracey, but I don't. He's still there. Scary too though. Because there's that moment where there's like a choice, do I do this and surrender control, run the risk of coming to my senses with someone bleeding out on the ground, or do I resist and barely hit or miss altogether. Sounds like an easy choice. After Rin though, it isn't."
"I guess its finding some kind of middle ground that will make all the difference. If it's even possible."
There was a shift in his thoughts as Tracey stirred again.
"He's charged again by the feel of it."

Harrison polished off the pizza.
B0nez had been ready a while. He hadn't taken too much damage. They'd stopped by the quartermaster to get Harrison's bandaid tin recharged while they ate.
"It's why you hit so hard, though," Harrison said. "Still, okay, this is what B0nez said about it, and this is why I'm not too worried. Everything comes down to numbers, right? Early you had that hit for, what, 10% of my shield. If I hadn't blocked. And these guys you're sparring with, they don't block. They take the hit and then they hit back. So their shield's down 30%, and you clobber them with this attack you and Tracey have..."
Harrison was ticking off the math on his fingers.
"It's percentages. And B0nez has got his eye on it. We're trainees still, and I sure as hell wouldn't be playing chicken with Allan, but- like I said. It's because B0nez and I know you. ...I mean. As percentages go I'd like to say I was 100% sure this was a good idea," Harrison smiled wryly, "But I'm not as dumb as I look. Especially where my personal safety's concerned. And the long term is we both got to know our business, back to front. So. I'm ready for it. If you don't let go, we won't know, and that'll hurt us more out in the field than it will here, on home base."
Harrison stood. He turned in his tray. He got his bandaid tin. And when they got back out on the field, he summoned B0nez.

Rep agreed, if there was one thing he could never hope to match Harrison in, it was straightforward logic. Risks or no risks they needed to know the extent of the charge in case it was ever turned against them, in places where there might not be any sort of controlled environment to test it out.
He was less nervy as they stepped back out onto the training field. He had to relax and let go for the attack, or it would set both of them in danger later. It made it easier with justification. Besides, Harrison was a damn good moon, he could handle it.
The first swing was controlled but not as restrained as they had been before. Tracey thrummed with the first bite of fear, apparently he had a bit of a taste for it. He wasn't sure if he should have been annoyed about that or if it somehow made sense.

The clash of weapons was welcome this time, now-familiar spike of cool, dark electricity buzzing through his muscles and flickering for a moment in the half-mechanical socket of B0nez's skull.
The pressure from the axe left him almost cheerful.
"I've been thinking. Maybe our vacation days get stored up. Like, all this leave we've been missing, we can get a week off."

The swirl of static was empowering, no longer as anxious to swing as he had been.
The miss this time was entirely down to thoughts of vacation days, something that it felt like forever since they last had. Tracey connected with the ground with a thunk, but he didn't seem too bothered by the ineffectual attack, instead snorting.
"Doubt it. If anything we'll lose all our ******** leave days because of Dakota and his whole gang."

"Yeah. Maybe." Harrison seemed slightly uncomfortable at the mention of that whole series of events, "...Why do you think he singled those two guys out? Out of everybody. You think it was random?"

"With Caelius? Who knows. Maybe they pissed him off other ways. Though I dunno didn't the blonde guy like, attack him during the fight?" his memory wasn't great, and the battle had been hectic, but he could have sworn there had been someone had tried to attack Caelius rather than their opponent.
This time the hit connected, with another satisfying thrum of familiar power. It made him shiver. It was one thing grabbing what little smidgens of fear you could from someone during a battle, it was another when your opponent stood and let you swing point blank.
"Nearly." he said.

"I remember that. I think you're right. That's why his arm was bandaged. And his weapon was already a tablet," Harrison was okay with that.
He just didn't want to be singled out for the Sahara lottery.
The next hit knocked him back, but he kept his feet this time. Another rush. It made his head cottony.
"Yeah," he acknowledged with a grunt. He felt the build.
He stepped forward.
"Public execution would have been better than that. He left their weapons to the horsemen too."

It was surprisingly difficult to work up real malice when Harrison was discussing things that had been playing on his mind since the meeting, a whole lot of what ifs and potential substitutions of individuals who had been sent into the desert in disgrace.
Again Tracey hit nothing but the ground.
"Yeah.. Yeah. It would be." it was hard to think with the thrill of the charge mingling with the anxious dread of the idea of it being Harrison in the place of Caelius' victims. The result was a distracting sort of nausea.
"We could make it. Maybe. I mean if we ******** up like that. We won't."

"Anyone else and I'd say bullshit," Harrison said, not able to help a short laugh, and putting B0nez up again, "Guess I could manage living off snakes and cactus. I've eaten worse. They shoulda asked Caelius for some bugspray."

He was lining up a nice controlled swing. Accurate but not too hard.
Then Harrison had to go and mention snakes. The resulting swing was the axe wielding equivalent of panicked sweeping invisible serpents off him. It probably hurt more than he meant.
Tracey's glow said charged, Rep's flailing him around said he hadn't noticed.

Harrison laughed more, backing up and rifling through for his bandaid tin. "Alright, woah, easy,"
He put the fresh bandage on his wrist.
"And of course you can ******** eat them. They're not all poison. Everything past the head's meat. You can't tell me with all the tanning you do you never considered a pair of snakeskin boots."
