Ami's face twisted up at the idea of "leaf juice." No. No ******** you Lex, tea was a drink for the gods. She could at least attest to the tea here being crap; she bought her own stores when out and about on her day off, and then just hoarded it all in her room. She was at least thankful that she no longer had to return to the cafeteria for hot water; her dear friend Tori had fixed that right up.
It wasn't that she disliked coffee, tea was just the better of the two.
A frown at his posture, and a silent prayer for that poor chair. It must've gone through such abuse. The way he was sitting was just so barbaric. A gentleman would've sat down, legs crossed.
She didn't comment though, merely cocked an eyebrow skeptically. Judging him.
"You look stupid," she said bluntly, exactly what he was thinking. "Why would I care what you read?" A snide glance, followed by, "And yes, I do." Fact, not opinion.

"One; I'm too tall for this chair. When I sit in it normally, my knees hit the table with every movement." He remained where he was, smiling. "Two, because you're my superior, not to mention the knower of all there is to know, so I thought you'd like the opportunity to chastise me for reading basic books." Still smiling, and sipping coffee. "And three, I actually don't care."
Lex usually wasn't this frank with women. In fact, he was never this frank with women.
Then again, you weren't this kind of frank with women when you wanted to get them under the sheets. Lex didn't want to get Ami under the sheets. A little voice told him that she probably had dead fish syndrome anyway.

<< I swear to Jack that wasn't me. Gryphons are noble beasts, whelp, we don't think such vile thoughts. >>
"So, in short, I was just trying to keep up conversation. But you probably have more people to scowl at; so I'll get to my mundane reading of my mundane books drinking my mundane coffee." Another sip of the mentioned brown sludge. "Thanks for being an amazing person."
He put his nose in a book on the human anatomy, and ignored her presence.

There we go. There was the blow up. The hurt ego, the bruised pride. The average human reaction. Okay, so Lex wasn't different. Still a man with shallow interpretations, still a person picking her apart for a reaction.
A hurt look crossed her face, but it was sealed up by a stony expression in a matter of seconds. Contrary to popular belief, though she liked being alone, though she disliked company in general, it still hurt when people got up in her face.
Even more so without Junpei to assure her she was okay.
"You should be proud of your so-sought-after skill, that's the most I've said to anyone in weeks. In fact, I'll contact Dr. H right now. Please give Lex a promotion, he's clearly the most skilled hunter in all of Deus Ex Machina for making the b***h talk," she said coldly. It really was the most she'd talked. Ami kept to herself, kept to her books. Lex's conversation had simply caught her off guard. Perhaps she'd even enjoyed it? "You're welcome." With an annoyed flip of her braid, she turned to walk over the door. A sincere frown crossed her face though. She'd had hopes for that one.

Lex tried to ignore the traces of actual hurt emotions in his acquaintance's voice, and succeeded for all of three minutes. Then they sunk in. He'd gotten her to talk more than anyone else in weeks. She'd actually opened up a little.
And then he flushed it all down the toilet. Like an idiot.
<< Congratulations whelp, I didn't even have to call you stupid this time. >>
Lex put the pen on the coffee table, and made a scowl at it before leaving the room to chase after Ami.
It wasn't hard, catching up to her. He made longer strides, and had actually paced himself at a light jog.
"Ami, wait..."

Ami was upset, not stupid. There was no need to be dramatic. "Yes?" she said, stopping where she was and slightly pivoting her body to face him. She wasn't the type to simply run away and cry.
She never did things without explanation.
Her face was all wrong for it though. A placid nothingness of white canvas on her face. There should've been something there. Anger maybe. Hurt. Emotions. With Ami, there was just nothing. There'd been nothing for a long time.
"You've got about five seconds, jethro."

Jethro. Why in the hell was she calling him Jethro?
Anyway, bigger and better things. Like making an even bigger idiot of himself so that he'd actually have some kind of friend on this island. Whew, okay Lex, don't blow it.
<< You really don't know how to interact with women when not being suave, do you? >>
< Shut. Your. Trap. >
"I'm sorry I snapped back there. I'd blame culture shock, or missing my dead beat mother, but there's really no excuse." A sigh, and a genuine smile. "I really think you'd be a good person to know, and not just because you know a lot." He was being honest with her, grey eyes focused on her face's profile.
"I don't think genuinely bad people would come to an organization that's dedicated to giving humanity a fighting chance. A genuinely bad person would just stick around with the shades, let them feed off them." A sigh. "I don't think you're a bad person Ami, and I'm sorry I treated you that way back there."
He stopped, looked down at the floor, and rubbed his neck.
"And I'm sorry that was melodramatic and cheesy."

Apologies were nice and all, but she really wished it just hadn't happened in the first place. It was always this way after all. Someone said something, then realized that- oh hey- their words have an impact. So apologies came forth, often ones they didn't mean.
Yet Lex's was oddly sincere. She wasn't often told she was a genuinely good person. To be honest, she didn't think she was a good person most of the time. Easily disposable. That was the life of a hunter. She'd never thought herself having merit for simply being here. Then again, her purpose wasn't as valiant as Lex made it out to be. She was on this island because she'd run away from a bad thing.
"I'm used to it," she said dully, eyes on the ground. People talked after all. She knew what others thought. "If you think I hadn't figured out that I'm prickly, I must look denser than I imagined."
She sighed and added, "People don't often try me a second time, so I suppose brownie points for that." She rolled her hand as she talked, a flippant, vague way of saying she accepted his apology. If he could even figure that out.
"Is this the part where I say, 'Oh Lex, you came for me~'" Never not mocking his flirtatious tendencies.

There's these moments that happen in a person's life when they feel like the biggest butt hole on the planet. This was one of those moments for Lex, as he watched Ami say she was used to being snapped at, and knowing she was hard to get along with.
Then she started mocking him again. He wanted to roll his eyes, walk away, shove his hands in his pockets, maybe even tell her off again - but he wouldn't. Not after he's just apologized and embarrassed himself.
He bit his lip, and said "Well, most people are more selfish with their grace than they're willing to admit. Sure, we really don't deserve more than once chance, if that, but why not offer it?"
It makes you the better person, anyway. He thought, grin staying on his face.
"And no, this is the part where you say 'I accept your apology, now get back to work.'" His grin turned to a smirk and into a genuine smile as he held out his hand. "Good talking to you again."

Ami slipped her small hand into Lex's, giving it a dainty shake before returning her hand to her pocket. A snide smirk crossed her face and she said, "I accept your apology, now get back to work."
She turned for a final time to go "get to work" herself, but calmly added, "Norse won't learn itself after all."
In her own weird way, Ami-senpai had noticed you Lex.
