"Time. Seems to be the fixer of all the problems here. The point where anyone thinks you are worth keeping around and don't die." He was deeply troubled by this, and simply stared out at the murky shapes in the water, cleaning a moment. He would have killed to be in a little sub like this as a kid, underwater, watching fish all day. Now he was just deeply disturbed that a giant whale could come in and MAYBE some alarms might go off in time.

"What's the most messed up thing you've seen?" He said, turning his head as a random thought popped his head. "Anything interesting?" In a delightful sorta way. If he saw Moby d**k, then who was to say there were some fun stories?

"That's pretty much how it works," Jordan agreed. "Once you demonstrate you're more than a warm body to throw into battle, then things start getting more interesting."

He paused in his cleaning of the consoles to consider the question. "Down here, or in general?" he asked. "Down here, I think the best thing I've seen is a pair of kraken chasing a sea serpent. They were way off in the distance, so I didn't have a great view, and I spent most of the time taking readings and monitoring them to make sure they weren't going to decide that the sub looked like an interesting thing to investigate, but it was interesting to watch."

"Certainly not your average day at the aquarium. That would be rather entertaining to see." Seeing as there would be glass and weapons between him, giving a sense of security.

"I suppose things like Shadows seem less threatening when you can see them like this." He hoped. "At least you can see more detail now. Not just black blobs.." That made noises and dragged themselves through attics and side-streets.

"It's usually pretty boring down here, but every once in a while, you get something like that." Jordan was actually a little surprised at how many dirt and fingerprints the consoles had acquired; it annoyed him now that he'd noticed, and irritated him all the more that he'd keep noticing now that it had actually been brought to his attention. Thanks, Melvin.

Ferros snickered.

Oh, shut up. "Sometimes," he temporized. "Sometimes seeing the detail is pretty awful. But it's pretty comforting and encouraging to know that you're not defenseless any longer." He stroked Ferros's ring with a silent wisp of gratitude.

Melvin saw this all the time, everywhere. You were getting off lightly, Jordan.

Finishing up on the window, he collecting his trash and noticed the bin that Jordan left. It was nice to see someone who got the fact he was cleaning and offered assistance. Throwing the trash away, he set the bin down next to Jordan to throw his own trash away, and then went over to a small bookshelf that was also cluttered, setting about to dust and rearranging the books as he went. He also saw a broom, and was tempted to start that as well.

"I suppose, but when they are dark, your imagination runs with you." It had since he was a child.

"I don't know, I was rather useless during the last two battles. I suppose it's true about not lasting too long around here when you have a terrible aim like mine. I can only hope that whatever I meet next is the size of a barn and doesn't notice me while I try to shoot it."

Not my fault.

Yeah. Yeah. Whatever.

"Yeah, I get that," Jordan agreed; he did, too. The things that lurked just out of sight had been horrifying in part because they were unknown. He tossed his paper towel into the bin and started on the keyboards. If Melvin didn't like things to be dirty ... well, if was probably better that Jordan was handling this part of the job.

"You'll get better," he assured Melvin. "Ferros wasn't a large as he is now when we first bonded, but he's never been that small; still, we were embarrassingly bad at combat for the first few months." He grinned. "In battle? Moon Division is your best friend."

Melvin took a few books and set them in another shelf. "I've been hearing a lot about moon. Seems some of the Suns claim theirs. I guess it is really smart to keep a few as your best friends seeing as they stand right in the front lines. Don't know if I'm that comfortable having someone else take all my hits for me when I can't return the favor as well as everyone else." He didn't want someone to die and all he could do was barely hit his targets. It wasn't exactly a fair trade, and the guilt would probably kill him if it happened.

"Do you keep close to a few Moon members?"

"Some of us do work with a specific person most often, but you can't always count on having your favorite partner on any given mission," Jordan said. "Better to be flexible. And it's not so much someone taking hits for you as - hm, blocking or deflecting. It's not like someone defending you is being a meat shield. More like knocking the monster's claws off course away from your head. And you're Life division; in combat, when you're not attacking, you're likely going to be acting as a medic, and that's every bit as important as direct assault on the enemy."

"I guess you could say I'm pretty close to one Moon," he laughed. "But on missions and in training I work with whoever's around."

Melvin had to give a chuckle at that. "Me - a medic? That's a scary thought." He'd have to pity whoever he got to take care of and heal. "I suppose they'll cover that in some form of wacky and strange training they have over at Lie." Maybe another family game like Jenga, but with healing. Operation?

He glanced at his watch a moment. Their shift was almost over.

"Thanks by the way, for telling me all about this. A lot of people like showing by trying to throw their weapon at my head. Teaching by Example or by trying to give me a heart attack." Jordan was, if anything, one of the few sane people on the island.

"Runic bandaids," Jordan said cheerfully. "You don't have to have any special training for that."

He nodded. "You're welcome. I'm always willing to help out - all else aside, I figure that the sooner the newly awakened know the basics around here, the better. It helps everyone's safety and sanity." Then he grinned. "Also always up for a spar, but I have this feeling you won't be taking me up on that."

Ferros snickered.

Prolixity

He finished sorting out the book shelf by the time his phone started to beep. Their shift was over. Turning the alarm off, he went over to toss the paper towel he was using and to press his hands on the base of his back to get out any knots.

"Not true. I've been sparring a lot. I'm just going to train a bit before you use me as a nail for that massive hammer of yours, but I can hit you up online when I feel I am up for being trampled." It was true. Each spar so far resulted in him face down on the dirt or so out of breath he nearly had a pass out. He had yet to win a single one.

"Seems our shift is done here."

"Excellent. I'm actually training with runic weapons for close combat right now, so you'll have a better chance," Jordan said cheerfully. "Ferros isn't terribly pleased about it, but he recognizes grudgingly that there's likely to be situations where I simply won't have enough space to summon him, so I get to learn a new skill set. Text me when you feel like sparring."

He glanced at his own phone, surprised. "Time flies when you're having fun?" he said dryly.

"I guess there are downsides to having massive weapons." It made having a small gun a bit more bearable if he knew there were downsides.

Stepping towards the portal, he gave a genuine smile. "Yeah. It was fun." Melvin had a weird idea of what fun was, and cleaning was part of it. "See ya later." He said with a wave, and stepped through the portal.
